A poset model of a topological space X is a poset P such that the subspace Max(P) of the Scott space ΣP is homeomorphic to X, where Max(P) is the set of all maximal points of P. Every T1 space has a (bounded complete algebraic) poset model. It was, however, not known whether every T1 space has a directed complete poset model and whether every sober T1 space has a directed complete poset model whose Scott topology is sober. In this paper we give a positive answer to each of these two problems. For each T1 space X, we shall construct a directed complete poset E that is a model of X, and prove that X is sober if and only if the Scott space Σ E is sober. One useful by-product is a method for constructing more directed complete posets whose Scott topology is not sober.

We provide a new and concise proof of the existence of suprema in the Cuntz semigroup using the open projection picture of the Cuntz semigroup initiated in [12]. Our argument is based on the observation that the supremum of a countable set of open projections in the bidual of a C*-algebra A is again open and corresponds to the generated hereditary C*-subalgebra of A.

We study the four-genus of linear combinations of torus knots: g4(aT(p, q) #-bT(p′, q′)). Fixing positive p, q, p′, and q′, our focus is on the behavior of the four-genus as a function of positive a and b. Three types of examples are presented: in the first, for all a and b the four-genus is completely determined by the Tristram–Levine signature function; for the second, the recently defined Upsilon function of Ozsváth–Stipsicz–Szabó determines the four-genus for all a and b; for the third, a surprising interplay between signatures and Upsilon appears.

Inside any proper hyperbolic geodesic space X we construct a rooted topological ${\mathbb R}$-tree T that reflects the geometry of X in the following sense. All rays in T are quasi-geodesic in X. Every geodesic ray in X lies eventually close to a ray of T. The embedding of T in X extends continuously to their boundaries in a finite-to-one way, the number of boundary points of T mapping to a given boundary point of X being bounded if the (Assouad) dimension of the boundary of X is finite.

Let Γ be a crystallographic group of dimension n, i.e. a discrete, cocompact subgroup of Isom(ℝn) = O(n) ⋉ ℝn. For any n ⩾ 2, we construct a crystallographic group with a trivial center and trivial outer automorphism group.

Let K be a number field or a function field of characteristic 0, let φ ∈ K(z) with deg(φ) ⩾ 2, and let α ∈ ℙ1(K). Let S be a finite set of places of K containing all the archimedean ones and the primes where φ has bad reduction. After excluding all the natural counterexamples, we define a subset A(φ, α) of ℤ⩾0 × ℤ>0 and show that for all but finitely many (m, n) ∈ A(φ, α) there is a prime 𝔭 ∉ S such that ord𝔭(φm+n(α)−φm(α)) = 1 and α has portrait (m, n) under the action of φ modulo 𝔭. This latter condition implies ord𝔭(φu+v(α)−φu(α)) ⩽ 0 for (u, v) ∈ ℤ⩾0 × ℤ>0 satisfying u < m or v < n. Our proof assumes a conjecture of Vojta for ℙ1 × ℙ1 in the number field case and is unconditional in the function field case thanks to a deep theorem of Yamanoi. This paper extends earlier work of Ingram–Silverman, Faber–Granville and the authors.

A multi-crossing (or n-crossing) is a singular point in a projection of a knot or link at which n strands cross so that each strand bisects the crossing. We generalise the classic result of Kauffman, Murasugi and Thistlethwaite relating the span of the bracket polynomial to the double-crossing number of a link, span〈K〉 ⩽ 4c2, to the n-crossing number. We find the following lower bound on the n-crossing number in terms of the span of the bracket polynomial for any n ⩾ 3:

We unconditionally determine $I_{\mathbb Q}(d)$, the set of possible prime degrees of cyclic K-isogenies of elliptic curves with ${\mathbb Q}$-rational j-invariants and without complex multiplication over number fields K of degree ≤ d, for d ≤ 7, and give an upper bound for $I_{\mathbb Q}(d)$ for d > 7. Assuming Serre's uniformity conjecture, we determine $I_{\mathbb Q}(d)$ exactly for all positive integers d.

We prove that every piecewise linear manifold of dimension up to four on which a finite group acts by piecewise linear homeomorphisms admits a compatible smooth structure with respect to which the group acts smoothly.

We use twisted Alexander polynomials to show that certain algebraically slice 2-bridge knots are not topologically slice, even though all prime power Casson–Gordon signatures vanish. We also provide some computations indicating the efficacy of Casson–Gordon signatures in obstructing the smooth sliceness of 2-bridge knots.
