An enigmatic microproblematicum, Tuxekanella Riding and Soja (1993), has been identified in the shallow water carbonate succession of the Late Silurian Skala formation (Podolia, Ukraine). the newly found specimens suggest most probably the algal nature of this enigmatic microfossil. Tuxekanella is known only from two extremely distant regions at the moment: the Alexander terrane in Alaska and Podolia. the possibility of their paleobiogeographical link is discussed in the context of paleotectonic models, assuming the peri-Gondwanan origin of the Alexander Terrane.

Two life positions of fossil naticid opercula are recognized in Pliocene deposits of Hokkaido, northern Japan. In one position, the operculum seals the aperture. In the other position, the operculum is pressed against the shell base adjacent to the aperture. The death position of the head-foot mass can be reconstructed from the two opercular positions, which coincide, respectively, to naticids that died with the head-foot mass retracted into the shell, and those that died with it entirely extended from the shell.

The genus Cribrella Lipina, 1989, with type species Cribrella mstaensis Lipina, was described from the Lower Carboniferous (middle Visean) of the southern Urals, and placed in the family Lituotubellidae (Lipina, 1989, p. 40, PL II, figs. 1–4). As the generic name is preoccupied by Cribrella Agassiz, 1835, an echinoderm, Cribrella Schmid, 1892, a sponge, Cribrella Cossman, 1906, a bryozoan, and Cribrella Gawor-Biedowa, 1987, a foraminifer, the new name Cribroaperturata is herein proposed for Cribrella Lipina. The type species of the genus thus becomes Cribroaperturata mstaensis (Lipina).

This short paper is prepared to help potential authors prepare manuscripts in the correct format for submission to the Journal. Correct preparation greatly speeds the editorial process and makes for less revision by the author.

The abstract should be relatively short, concise, and informative, giving pertinent details of the research and conclusions reached. All new taxa should be itemized within it. The siphonophrentidae is a family of Devonian rugose corals that are known mostly from eastern North America, a part of the Eastern Americas biogeographical Realm (EAR) during the Devonian. Breviphrentis Stumm, 1949, has been considered a siphonophrentid by most previous authors and, in a recent monograph (Oliver, 1993), I described three EAR species as Breviphrentis and referred others to the genus.

Rare specimens of eldonioids recovered from the lower Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 4) Emu Bay Shale (EBS) Konservat-Lagerstätte represent the first record of the group for the Cambrian of East Gondwana. The disc-shaped body of the EBS taxon bears fine concentric corrugations on the dorsal surface and, ventrally, a series of internal lobes that have primary and secondary bifurcations, as well as a coiled sac. It appears to be most similar to Rotadiscus and Pararotadiscus of the Cambrian Chengjiang and Kaili biotas of South China, respectively. While the structure of the internal lobes would indicate that this occurrence in the EBS represents a new taxon within the Rotadiscidae, lack of detail regarding the precise number of internal lobes and the condition of the circumoral tentacles warrants a more conservative approach in leaving the genus and species under open nomenclature. The EBS specimens also host trace fossils, including the remains of a burrow, which are generally lacking in the body-fossil-bearing layers of the Konservat-Lagerstätte interval. These traces appear to have been made by small organisms and are similar to traces associated with the discs of Pararotadiscus guizhouensis Zhao and Zhu, 1994 from the Kaili Biota. The available taphonomic, paleoenvironmental, and ichnological evidence indicates that the EBS eldonioids are most likely vagrants that were transported or settled into the ‘preservational trap’ and subsequently exposed on the substrate for a brief period before burial, thereby allowing organisms to exploit their carcasses for nutrients or other purposes.

Trilobites from the upper Guzhangian of the southern Argentine Precordillera, preliminarily described by Carlos Rusconi in the 1950s, are revised herein. The specimens studied were collected from an allochthonous limestone block of La Cruz Olistoliths at 200 m northwest of Estancia San Isidro locality (San Isidro area, Mendoza). Taxa comprise Kormagnostus seclusus (Walcott, 1884), Cedaria prolifica Walcott, 1924, C. puelchana Rusconi, 1954, Tricrepicephalus texanus (Shumard, 1861), Meteoraspis metra (Walcott, 1890), Coosia conicephala (Rusconi, 1954) new combination, Coosella texana? Resser, 1942, Nasocephalus cf. N. nasutus Wilson, 1954, and Olenoides proa (Rusconi, 1954) new combination. The North American genera Meteoraspis Resser, 1935 and Nasocephalus Wilson, 1954 are reported confidently from South America for the first time. This assemblage is representative of the Cedaria prolifica Zone, which correlates with the lower Crepicephalus Zone of the traditional North American genus-based zonation. Most of the genera and species identified were previously described exclusively from Canada, the United States, and northwestern Mexico, a fact that provides new support to an allochthonous Laurentian origin of the Argentine Precordillera.

Bryozoans are abundant and diverse in the upper part of the Chainman Shale (Mississippian; Osagean, Meramecian-Chesterian) and in the upper Chesterian part of the overlying Ely Limestone (Mississippian-Pennsylvanian) in the Confusion Range of western Utah. The bryozoan assemblage includes 15 genera and 18 species; 12 species are new and 6 are in open nomenclature. The new species are the trepostomes Callocladia jensensis, Stenopora confusionensis, Stenoporella mineriensis, Tabulipora atacta, T. ricta, T. sarcinula, T. stragula, the cryptostomes Ascopora macellata, Rhabdomeson artum, Streblotrypa angulatum, Strebloplax pertusa, and the cystoporate Cystodictya astrepta. Species in open nomenclature are the trepostome Anisotrypa sp., the cryptostomes Saffordotaxis sp., Archimedes sp., Fenestella sp., Penniretepora sp. A, and Polypora sp. Callocladia and Strebloplax are known only from Chesterian strata in North America; Strebloplax is known only from the conterminous United States. The stratigraphic range of Stenoporella, also known only from the United States, is extended into rocks of supposed Pennsylvanian age. Stenoporella mineriensis, the only species in this bryozoan assemblage known to occur outside Utah, is also found in the Ely Limestone (Pennsylvanian) of Nevada.

Tabulipora is the dominant genus in the Chesterian rocks of this region; T. sarcinula and T. ricta are the most abundant taxa. The shallowing of the marine environment and the establishment of carbonate deposition during late Chainman time permitted widespread development and dispersal of the bryozoan faunas in western Utah.

The Mississippian was a time of widespread diversification of pelmatozoan echinoderms in the United States. The crinoids and blastoids were diverse and abundant in a variety of geologic settings. Most of the Osagean occurrences of blastoids are associated with platform carbonates such as the Burlington Limestone. These blastoids lived in association with a crinoid community dominated by camerate crinoids. Blastoids also lived in coeval Osagean deltaic environments such as the Borden Delta but were less diverse and abundant.

Early Devonian (Pragian-Emsian) rocks in the Xainza region of central Xizang (Tibet) yield a shallow-marine, carbonate-platform fauna of corals, brachiopods, dacryoconarids, nautiloids and conodonts, among which Tibetatrypa n. gen. is locally a prominent constituent. The fauna broadly resembles that of western Europe, the Altai-Sayan region, the Urals and western Qinlin province of China, but differs from the South China faunas. Tibetatrypa, related to the Silurian genus Nalivkinia, is the youngest and largest member of the subfamily Clintonellinae, and is the first Devonian brachiopod described from Tibet.

Webster (1991) is to be congratulated for clarifying the validity of the various contributions made to the literature of fossil echinoderms by V. J. Gupta. However, in correcting the paleogeographic database, an error has crept in which itself needs amending.

Jurassic–Cretaceous ammonites are particularly robust fossil tools in global stratigraphy and correlation. The successive evolution and extinction of these cephalopod mollusks was so rapid that many ammonite zones are no more than one million years in duration. A well-preserved ammonite specimen from the Fortissimo-1 core, Browse Basin, NW Australia is assignable to the widespread latest Jurassic dimorphic berriaselline genus, Blanfordiceras Cossmann, recorded previously from the Spiti area, Nepal, Tibet, Madagascar, Papua-New Guinea, Antarctica, and southern South America. This is the first report of ammonites of this age in the Australian region. The evolute shell of an estimated 90-100 mm diameter (when extrapolated) and pronounced ornamentation of variably bifurcating, curvilinear and flexuous ribs, intercalated with simple, non-bifurcating ribs, is consistent with Blanfordiceras wallichi (Gray, 1832), which has traditionally been restricted to the uppermost Tithonian Stage, ca. 146.5-145.5 Ma, but may well have survived into the earliest part of the Berriasian. The first recorded occurrence of this ammonite in Australia fills an anomalous absence in the paleobiogeographic distribution of Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary ammonites in the Indo-SW Pacific Subrealm with important implications for the calibration of offshore rocks and wells in Australia.

Rousseau h. flower (1913-1988) collected and published widely in paleontology during a career that spanned more than 50 years. Although Rousseau did significant paleontological work while employed elsewhere, the major part of his career was spent at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources (NMBM&MR), a career that included a decade of work after his formal retirement (Wolberg, 1988). During his life, Rousseau built a very large fossil collection based upon his own field work., materials other scientists referred to him for study, material sent to him by serious amateurs, and collections Rousseau borrowed from other institutions and was unable to return before his death. The NMBM&MR is attempting to find and return all borrowed material. Similarly, we intend to transfer much described fossil material to major repositories with appropriate facilities for their maintenance in order to make the fossils available to as many interested students as possible. The guidelines for the transfer of this material were set by Rousseau before his death.

The Cambrian (Jiangshanian, Sunwaptan) Honey Creek Formation in the Wichita Mountains region of Oklahoma yielded a new fauna dominated by Monocheilus Resser, 1937 (senior synonym of Stigmacephalus Resser, 1937) in association with Ptychaspis Hall, 1863. It occupies the same stratigraphic position as similar faunas in the Upper Mississippi Valley and Alberta, lying a little above an interval characterized by species of Taenicephalus Ulrich and Resser in Walcott, 1924 and Orygmaspis Resser, 1937. Revision of Ptychaspis bullasa Lochman and Hu, 1959 from type material from Idaho and sclerites attributed to the species from Texas reveals a plexus of pseudocryptic species that share tuberculate sculpture on the cranidium. New species are Monocheilus reginae, Monocheilus richardi, Ptychaspis occulta, and Ptychaspis matuszaki.

Uintasoricines are diminutive plesiadapiforms that are found in the latest Paleocene through middle Eocene, predominantly in North America. They are not a diverse group but individual species may be locally abundant and they are a persistent element of the plesiadapiform radiation in North America surviving over a span of approximately 16 million years. Recent field work in southern Wyoming at South Pass has led to the discovery of a new genus and species of uintasoricine. The new form is smaller in tooth dimensions compared to other known uintasoricines, being slightly smaller than Uintasorex montezumicus from California. Both the newly described taxon and U. montezumicus are among the smallest plesiadapiforms yet known with body weights estimated to be 20 to 25 g. The sediments of the Cathedral Bluffs Tongue of the Wasatch Formation at South Pass contain a unique upland fauna—the presence of a distinctive uintasoricine in this assemblage adds further evidence to support the notion that this upland environment was a biodiversity hotspot during the latest early Eocene.
