Fibreoptic endoscopy has only recently become used as a diagnostic tool for the E.N.T. surgeon but it has not been widely used in the investigation of pharyngeal disease. During a two-year period at Warwick Hospital 53 patients have undergone flexible fibreoptic endoscopy using a gastroscope, with visualization of the pharynx. larynx and upper G.I. tract as far as the duodenum. This report describes the technique employed, details the endoscopic findings in 53 patients, and discusses the indications for the technique and the advantages that it holds for the E.N.T. surgeon in the diagnosis and management of pharyngeal disease.

Primary Ewing's sarcoma of the ethmoid bone has not been previously described. This case presented as a mass at the nasal bridge and posed diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. The clinical, radiological, macroscopic and microscopic features are described. The treatment by the combined therapies of cranio-facial resection, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are discussed.

In spite of the increasing use of more efficient medical therapy, different types of otogenic intracranial complications continue to occur.

A 20-year-old man developed a malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the right maxilla 19 years after irradiation for bilateral retinoblastoma.

The incidence of second tumours in patients who survived bilateral retinoblastoma treated with radiation was 8.5 per cent. Malignant fibrous histiocytomas which arise in a site of prior radiation are fatal. The present case is presumed to have the autosomal dominant retinoblastoma gene, not associated with deletion of the q 14 band of chromosome 13. The patient succumbed to the second tumour.
