We describe a 2-dimensional analogue of track categories, called two-track categories, and show that it can be used to model categories enriched in 2-type mapping spaces. We also define a Baues-Wirsching type cohomology theory for track categories, and explain how it can be used to classify two-track extensions of a track category by a module over .

In [TV], Bertrand Toën and Michel Vaquié define a scheme theory for a closed monoidal category (,⊗, 1) One of the key ingredients of this theory is the definition of a Zariski topology on the category of commutative monoidal objects in . The purpose of this article is to prove that under some hypotheses, Zariski open subobjects of affine schemes can be classified almost as in the usual case of rings (ℤ-mod,⊗,ℤ). The main result states that for any commutative monoidal object A in , the locale of Zariski open subobjects of the affine scheme Spec(A) is associated to a topological space whose points are prime ideals of A and whose open subsets are defined by the same formula as in rings. As a consequence, we can compare the notions of scheme over in [D] and in [TV].

For any Lie groupoid we construct an analytic index morphism taking values in a modified K-theory group which involves the convolution algebra of compactly supported smooth functions over the groupoid. The construction is performed by using the deformation algebra of smooth functions over the tangent groupoid constructed in [CR06]. This allows us in particular to prove a more primitive version of the Connes-Skandalis longitudinal index theorem for foliations, that is, an index theorem taking values in a group which pairs with cyclic cocycles. As another application, for D a -PDO elliptic operator with associated index ind we prove that the pairing

with τ a bounded continuous cyclic cocycle, only depends on the principal symbol class [σ(D)]∈K0. The result is completely general for étale groupoids. We discuss some potential applications to the Novikov conjecture.

In [7], a notion of noncommutative tangent space is associated with a conical pseudomanifold and Poincaré duality in K-theory is proved between this space and the pseudomanifold. The present paper continues this line of work. We show that an appropriate presentation of the notion of symbol on a manifold generalizes right away to conical pseudomanifolds and that it enables us to interpret Poincaré duality in the singular setting as a noncommutative symbol map.

We complete the calculation of the twisted cyclic homology of the quantised coordinate ring = ℂq [SL(2)] of SL(2) that we began in [14]. In particular, a nontrivial cyclic 3-cocycle is constructed which also has a nontrivial class in Hochschild cohomology and thus should be viewed as a noncommutative geometry analogue of a volume form.

Let X be a locally compact metrizable space. We show that the Paschke dual construction, which associates to a representation of C0(X) its commutant modulo locally compact operators, can be sheafified. We use this observation to simplify several constructions in analytic K-homology.

The new intersection theorem states that, over a Noetherian local ring R, for any non-exact complex concentrated in degrees n,…,0 in the category P(length) of bounded complexes of finitely generated projective modules with finite-length homology, we must have n ≥ d = dim R.

One of the results in this paper is that the Grothendieck group of P(length) in fact is generated by complexes concentrated in the minimal number of degrees: if Pd(length) denotes the full subcategory of P(length) consisting of complexes concentrated in degrees d,…0, the inclusion Pd(length) → P(length) induces an isomorphism of Grothendieck groups. When R is Cohen–Macaulay, the Grothendieck groups of Pd(length) and P(length) are naturally isomorphic to the Grothendieck group of the category M(length) of finitely generated modules of finite length and finite projective dimension. This and a family of similar results are established in this paper.

B. Schuster [19] proved that the mod 2 Morava K-theory K(s)*(BG) is evenly generated for all groups G of order 32. For the four groups G of order 32 with the numbers 38, 39, 40 and 41 in the Hall-Senior list [11], the ring K(2)*(BG) has been shown to be generated as a K(2)*-module by transferred Euler classes. In this paper, we show this for arbitrary s and compute the ring structure of K(s)*(BG). Namely, we show that K(s)*(BG) is the quotient of a polynomial ring in 6 variables over K(s)*(pt) by an ideal for which we list explicit generators.

Let p be a prime and F a field of characteristic different from p. Suppose all p-primary roots of unity are contained in F. Let α ∈ pBr(F) which has a cyclic splitting field. We prove that γi(α) = 0 for all i ≥ 2, where γi : pBr(F) → K2i(F)/pK2i(F) are the divided power operations of degree p. We also show that if char F ≠ 2, √−1 ∈ F*. D ∈2 Br(F), indD = 8 and a ∈ F* such that ind DF(√a) = 4, then γ3(D) = {a,s}γ2(D) for some s ∈ F*. Consequently, we prove that if D, considered as a division algebra, has a subfield of degree 4 of certain type, then γ3(D) = 0. At the end of the paper we pose a few open questions.

Gross and Hopkins have proved that in chromatic stable homotopy, Spanier-Whitehead duality nearly coincides with Brown-Comenetz duality. We give a conceptual interpretation of this phenomenon in terms of a Gorenstein condition [8] for maps of ring spectra.

We derive a power series formula for the p-adic regulator on the higher dimensional algebraic K-groups of number fields. This formula is designed to be well suited to computer calculations and to reduction modulo powers of p.

We study self-duality of Grothendieck's blended extensions in the context of a tannakian category. The set of equivalence classes of symmetric, resp. antisymmetric, blended extensions is naturally endowed with a torsor structure, which enables us to compute the unipotent radical of the associated monodromy groups in various situations.

We prove twisted homological stability with polynomial coefficients for automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups of any given class. These groups interpolate between two extremes for which homological stability was known before, the general linear groups over the integers and the automorphism groups of free groups. The proof presented here uses a general result that applies to arbitrary extensions of groups, and that has other applications as well.

In the context of 2-summable Fredholm modules, we prove that the Connes-Karoubi multiplicative character coincides with Brown's determinant invariant on algebraic K-theory.

Let U be a connected noetherian scheme of finite étale cohomological dimension in which every finite set of points is contained in an affine open subscheme. Suppose that α is a class in H2(Uét,ℂm)tors. For each positive integer m, the K-theory of α-twisted sheaves is used to identify obstructions to α being representable by an Azumaya algebra of rank m2. The étale index of α, denoted eti(α), is the least positive integer such that all the obstructions vanish. Let per(α) be the order of α in H2(Uét,ℂm)tors. Methods from stable homotopy theory give an upper bound on the étale index that depends on the period of α and the étale cohomological dimension of U; this bound is expressed in terms of the exponents of the stable homotopy groups of spheres and the exponents of the stable homotopy groups of B(ℤ/(per(α))). As a corollary, if U is the spectrum of a field of finite cohomological dimension d, then , where [] is the integer part of , whenever per(α) is divided neither by the characteristic of k nor by any primes that are small relative to d.

We introduce a Milnor type K-group associated to commutative algebraic groups over a perfect field. It is an additive variant of Somekawa's K-group. We show that the K-group associated to the additive group and q multiplicative groups of a field is isomorphic to the space of absolute Kähler differentials of degree q of the field, thus giving us a geometric interpretation of the space of absolute Kähler differentials. We also show that the K-group associated to the additive group and Jacobian variety of a curve is isomorphic to the homology group of a certain complex.

Let p be an odd prime and L/F a p-extension of number fields with Galois group G. The aim of this paper is to provide answers to a question of Kahn concerning lower bounds for the order of the kernel and cokernel of the functorial map K2F → K2LG. To this end, we first determine a norm index formula for generalized Tate kernels and then express our lower bounds in terms of the ramification in L/F.

We study Quillen's model category structure for homotopy of simplicial objects in the context of Janelidze, Márki and Tholen's semi-abelian categories. This model structure exists as soon as is regular Mal'tsev and has enough regular projectives; then the fibrations are the Kan fibrations of S. When, moreover, is semi-abelian, weak equivalences and homology isomorphisms coincide.

We discuss the analytic aspects of the geometric model for K-homology with coefficients in ℤ/kℤ constructed in [12]. In particular, using results of Rosenberg and Schochet, we construct a map from this geometric model to its analytic counterpart. Moreover, we show that this map is an isomorphism in the case of a finite CW-complex. The relationship between this map and the Freed-Melrose index theorem is also discussed. Many of these results are analogous to those of Baum and Douglas in the case of spinc manifolds, geometric K-homology, and Atiyah-Singer index theorem.

We show that the functor from curved differential graded algebras to differential graded categories, defined by the second author, sends Cartesian diagrams to homotopy Cartesian diagrams, under certain reasonable hypotheses. This is an extension to the arena of dg-categories of a construction of projective modules due to Milnor. As an example, we show that the functor satisfies descent for certain partitions of a complex manifold.
