The old problem of erosion by temperate glaciers is reviewed. We restrict ourselves to a monolithologic erosion of hard beds where chemical weathering is almost negligible. Rock fracture, either subglacial or otherwise, may have occurred during a previous cold episode, allowing long-lasting quarrying by the temperate glacier, but, once all the loosened material had been dragged away, grooving becomes the main erosional process. The theory of locally stress-controlled temperatures leads to the idea that very small particles found in the bottom ice cannot reach the bed. Therefore, abrasion and polishing come from rock chips due to grooving or sand grains freed by suglacial chemical weathering. In the steady regime, clasts that are able to groove come from the surrounding rock walls. Most of them do not enter the bergschrund, but are embedded in a bottom layer, which melts progressively over several kilometres. After being in contact with the bed over some distance, they are sufficiently blunted to become unable to groove. This distance. λ, increases with the boulder size, and the largest ones are not yet worn out at the glacier terminus. The mechanics of grooving is roughly modelled to estimate, for any stone size, the grooved volume per unit time and the grooving distance λ. From these estimations, and the size distribution, the erosion rate without quarrying as a function of the distance from the head wall, is calculated. It goes through a maximum when all the debris-laden bottom layer has just melted, and thus an overdeepening might form in a steady way. However, two unknown parameters enter the theory the probability ∏ for a stone able to groove which is in contact with the bed to groove and the ratio k of the volume of grooved rock before the stone is worn out to the volume of the stone. Experiments that may allow us to determine them are indicated below.

We develop theoretically a description of a possible subglacial drainage mechanism for glaciers and ice sheets moving over saturated, deformable till. The model is based on the plausible assumption that flow of water in a thin film at the ice-till interface is unstable to the formation of a channelized drainage system, and is restricted to the case in which meltwater cannot escape through the till to an underlying aquifer. In describing the physics of such channelized drainage, we have generalized and extended Röthlisberger’s model of channels cut into basal ice to include “canals” cut into the till, paying particular attention to the role of sediment properties and the mechanics of sediment transport. We show that sediment-floored Röthlisberger (R) channels can exist for high effective pressures, and wide, shallow, ice-roofed canals cut into the till for low effective pressures. Canals should form a distributed, non-arborescent system, unlike R channels. For steep slopes typical of alpine glaciers, both drainage systems can exist, but with the water pressure lower in the R channels than in the canals; the canal drainage should therefore be unstable in the presence of channels. For small slopes typical of ice sheets, only canals can exist and we therefore predict that, if channelized meltwater flow occurs under ice sheets moving over deformable till, it takes the form of shallow, distributed canals at low effective pressure, similar to that measured at Ice Stream B in West Antarctica. Geologic evidence derived from land forms and deposits left by the Pleistocene ice sheets in North America and Europe is also consistent with predictions of the model.

For 3 months in 1978, the 14.6 GHz Seasat-A scatterometer (SASS) measured the normalized microwave-radar back-scatter coefficient of the Earth’s surface for the purpose of estimating near-surface vector winds over the ocean. SASS also made back-scatter measurements over land and ice regions; however, the application of this data has been limited due to the low (50 km) resolution of the measurements. Using a new technique for generating 6 km enhanced-resolution SASS images of the radar back-scatter characteristics, we present a study of the 1978 condition of the Greenland ice sheet. We derive a time-series of back-scatter images spanning the period July–September 1978. These images show the extent of summer ablation along the ice-sheet periphery. Using the data and models relating firn structure and condition to radar back-scatter characteristics, we delineate and map the seasonal extent of zones which appear to correspond to dry-snow, percolation, wet-snow, and ablation facies, over virtually the entire ice sheet. The results provide a base line with which to compare current (ERS-1) and future Greenland radar maps of snow-and ice-surface conditions.

TV-video observations of four boreholes in Storglaciären, Sweden, revealed that 1.3% of the observed ice column was composed of englacial voids. The form of the voids is presented by photographs from the video. It is suggested that they are openings into englacial channels and cavities which were intersected during drilling. The observations further showed that about 11% of the ice column consisted of air-bubble-poor blue-ice inclusions. The observations show a relation between the blue-ice inclusions and the voids, which indicates that the origin and development of these features are coupled to each other. It is suggested that crevasses in the accumulation area are an important factor in this process.

Crack propagation in saline ice (a model sea ice) is investigated in this study in an attempt to understand the processes of crack growth at one loading rate and two temperatures. As has been previously observed in cold sea ice and warm or cold fresh-water ice, crack growth occurs in initiation/arrest increments. The energetic stability criteria of crack growth are examined in saline ice and crack growth is characterized in terms of the fracture-resistance parameter KR . This paper offers the development of a new fracture geometry capable of sustained stable crack growth and the presentation of fracture-resistance curves for saline ice at −25° and −15 C. The important findings of this paper are that: (i) in warm saline ice, extensive local crack-tip damage is accompanied by a limited amount of slow, stable crack extension; (n) fracture in cold saline ice is characterized by locally negative KR behavior; and (iii) fracture in cold or warm saline ice is characterized by globally positive KR curve behavior.

The first field experiment in the 5 year seasonal Sea Ice Monitoring Site (SIMS) program was conducted in Resolute Passage, Canadian Eastern Arctic, between 15 May and 8 June 1990. This period signals the early melt season of sea ice in that region. A standard array of ice and snow measurements was collected on a daily basis from first-year and multi-year ice to monitor temporal evolution. Measurements included ice salinity, ice temperature and ice-surface roughness, snow salinity, snow temperature, snow density and snow depth. The complex dielectric constant of sea ice was computed from these measurements. Rapid desalination of first-year ice was noticed in the surface layer. Towards the end of the experiment period, salinities of the snow-hoar layer were higher than those of the ice-surface layer. Variation in air temperature is replicated by ice-surface temperature but not by the salinity or dielectric properties. No temporal variation in permittivity and dielectric loss was observed for first-year ice, but a slight increase in both parameters was observed for multi-year ice. As a result, a slight decrease in the microwave-penetration depth was observed for multi-year ice. Physical properties of ice and snow were compared against results obtained from other experiments conducted in different ice-formation regions in the late winter and in the early melt season.

The extent and duration of surface melting on the Antarctic ice shelves and margins of the Antarctic ice sheet are derived from satellite passive-microwave data for 1978–87. The occurrence of surface melting in daily maps of Tb is indicated by a marked increase in microwave brightness temperature (Tb), which is caused by moisture in the near-surface firn. Tb increases of more than 30 deg above the annual-mean Tb are chosen to indicate melting. Most Antarctic surface melting occurs during December and January. The observed melting is correlated with regional air temperatures, but some melt patterns also appear to be related to katabatic-wind effects. The correlations suggest that the surface melting in Antarctica increases about 3.5 × 106 d km2 per degree of summer temperature increase. The surface-melt index (duration times area of melting) calculated for Antarctica is 24 × 106 d km2, averaged over nine summers. The observed inter-annual and regional variability is large. Surface melting was most extensive during the 1982/83 summer (36 × 106 d km2) and least extensive during the 1985/86 summer (15 × 106d km2). The data indicate a decline in surface melting over the 9 years, but meaningful inferences regarding trends in surface melting are precluded by the large inter-annual variability.

The limitations of current and immediate future single-frequency, single-polarization, space-borne SARs for winter sea-ice mapping are quantitatively examined, and improvements are suggested by combining frequencies and polarizations. Ice-type maps are generated using multi-channel, air-borne SAR observations of winter sea ice in the Beaufort Sea to identify six ice conditions: (1) multi-year sea ice; (2) compressed first-year ice; (3) first-year rubble and ridges; (4) first-year rough ice; (5) first-year smooth ice; and (6) first-year thin ice. At a single polarization, C- (λ = 5.6 cm) and L- (λ = 24 cm) band frequencies yield a classification accuracy of 67 and 71%, because C-band confuses multi-year ice and compressed, rough, thick first-year ice surrounding multi-year ice floes, and L-band confuses multi-year ice and deformed first-year ice. Combining C- and L-band improves classification accuracy by 20%. Adding a second polarization at one frequency only improves classification accuracy by 10–14% and separates thin ice and calm open water. Under similar winter-ice conditions, ERS-1 (Cvv) and Radarsat (CHH) would overestimate the multi-year ice fraction by 15% but correctly map the spatial variability of ice thickness; J-ERS-1 (LHH) would perform poorly;and J-ERS-1 combined with ERS-1 or Radarsat would yield reliable estimates of the old, thick, first-year and thin-ice fractions, and of the spatial distribution of ridges. With two polarizations, future single-frequency space-borne SARs could improve our current capability to discriminate thinner ice types.

A surge of West Fork Glacier, a temperate glacier in the Susitna Basin of the Alaska Range, began soon after the end of the 1987 melt season and terminated on 6 July 1988. Reconnaissance measurements of balance, elevation and speed had been made from 1981 to 1983. Daily measurements of surface speed at two points 9 km apart and of the characteristics of the stream draining the glacier were begun during the surge and continued through the following year. The maximum displacement of the ice during the surge was about 4 km; the maximum change in surface elevation was about 120 m. Between the time of the start of detailed observations on 12 February 1988 and the onset of a complex termination phase during the last month of the surge, the speed was almost constant, and the water discharge was totally free of turbidity, indicating that no basal water was escaping from the glacier. During the termination phase, sharp changes in speed occurred, almost simultaneously at the two observation sites; each deceleration event was accompanied by high sediment concentration and high water discharge. This behavior is similar to that observed on Variegated Glacier during its 1982-83 surge. The mechanism of triggering (related to surface water input and the disruption of the internal drainage system) and the cause of the fast motion were probably the same for both surges, even though there are substantial differences in size and mass-balance characteristics.

An examination of both experiments and computer models of polycrystalline ice undergoing a simple shear suggests that there is good agreement. The model has correctly reproduced the deformational and microstructural features caused by glide on (0001) in the ice aggregates. This success is particularly prominent for those ice grains with a lattice orientation suitable for hard or easy glide or kinking, and where there is a sub-horizontal с axis and a larger grain-size. A limitation may be that the model cannot explicitly simulate recrystallization and grain-boundary migration, which are two other important processes operating jointly with glide in experimentally deformed ice. However, through the use of the models, it is possible to show how kinematic factors can control the processes of recrystallization. The localization of recrystallization in the polycrystalline ice aggregate is determined by the stress and strain variations between neighbouring grains.

In parts of the core area of the Fennoscandian ice sheet relict periglacial surfaces occur. The boundary between periglacial and glacial landscapes is often sharp and erosional, with fluting truncating patterned ground. The periglacial surfaces are older than the last ice sheet and are interpreted to represent patches of continuous frozen-bed conditions. A specific land-form assemblage occurs at the edges of such patches. On the basis of three type localities along the eastern rim of the Scandinavian mountains, four thermal boundary land forms, characteristic of the frozen-patch environment, are defined. Stoss-side moraines and transverse till scarps, not previously described, are interpreted to have formed in detachment zones where soil frozen to the glacier overlies thawed soil. The detachment zones are located where subglacial warming raises the phase-change surface (water/ice) until it intersects the soil layer up-and down-glacier from residual frozen-bed patches. The up-glacier ends of frozen-bed patches are located on topographic highs, but down-glacier the location of lateral sliding boundaries is occasionally independent of topography. The identification of relict surfaces and thermal boundary forms can improve paleo-ice-sheet models by providing estimates of the extent of frozen-bed conditions.

Firn-density variations have been studied in the lower accumulation area of the Greenland ice sheet (1440-1620 m a.s.l.) near Pâkitsoq, West Greenland. The main control on density in the near-surface firn layer (of 5-10 m thickness) is the formation of ice layers by the refreezing of meltwater that reaches depths of 2-4 m below the surface. The density variations are described by the ratio of annual surface melt M to the annual accumulation C. The ratio M/C is about 0.6 at the run-off limit (at about 1400 m a.s.l. in the study area) where refreezing of meltwater transforms snow into impermeable ice. The mean density of near-surface firn decreases with elevation, reflecting a decrease in melt with elevation. There is a surprising decrease in firn density at depths of more than about 4 m below the 1991 summer surface, which reflects lower melt rates and/or higher accumulation in the early 1980s and late 1970s when this firn was passing through the surface layer. The formation of such low-density firn may have partially contributed to the 1978-85 thickening of the ice sheet observed by satellite-radar altimetry. Near-surface firn density is therefore very sensitive to climate change and might be an attractive target for climate monitoring.

Results of a detailed topographic survey of Ghiacciaio del Calderone, Italy, the southernmost in Europe, are described and compared with those of surveys made in earlier years. Recession and thinning, much affected by micro-climate, have been the predominant state of health during the 20th century. Between 1916 and 1990, volume is estimated to have been reduced by about 90% and area by about 68%.

Shallow cores to about 17 m depth were recovered at nine sites distributed on a 150 km × 150 km survey grid centered Summit in central Greenland. Measurements of the stable oxygen-isotope ratio and the gross β activity as a function of depth enable annual summer horizons to be identified and dated. From these data, average accumulation rates were computed with an uncertainty of about 5–8%. The contours of constant accumulation rate in the region suggest a primary moisture flux from the southwest of the grid. Similarly, contours of the average oxygen-isotope ratio are consistent with the progressive isotopic depletion of a precipitating air mass moving from the southwest, and automatic weather-station data indicate that the moisture flux tends to be largest from the southwest quadrant. The annual variation in the total accumulation over the grid shows no persistent trend over the interval 1964–87 common to all cores.

The brittle failure of saline columnar ice was investigated under biaxial compression at and −10° and −40°C over the range 0 ≤ RA < 1 where RA is the ratio of the intermediate to major principal compressive stress. The major principal stress and the intermediate (confining) stress were orthogonal to the columnar axes (type-A confinement); both stresses and the c-axes of the grains were co-planar. The results confirm earlier work by Hausier (1981) and Timco and Frederking (1983, 1986) on saline ice and follow similar behavior to fresh-water columnar ice found by Smith and Schulson (1993) and Frederking (1977). Failure stress and failure mode are sensitive to the confinement and two regimes of behavior are found: the failure stress first rapidly increases with RA in the range 0 ≤ RA < RT and then tends to decrease for RA > Rt. The transition stress ratio, Rt changes from ≈0.2 at −10°C to ≈0.1 at −40°C. The failure mode changes from axial splitting to shear faulting in the loading plane for 0 < RA < Rt. Above Rt failure changes to a combined mode of splitting across the columns and shear faulting out of the loading plane. The failure-stress envelope is of a truncated Coulomb-type. Damage studies show wing cracks and local fragmentation of grains involving the brine pockets. The results are explained in terms of Coulombic sliding and Hertzian crack mechanics.

c-axis fabrics of the GISP2 ice core from central Greenland have been measured rapidly and accurately in the field, using both compressional and shear waves generated by an inexpensive, commercially available, “idiot-proof” device. Compressional-wave data were collected at 10 m intervals for the upper 2250 m of the ice sheet and show progressive clustering of c axes toward the vertical with increasing depth but no large steps at climatic boundaries in the core. The degree of clustering measured by ultrasound agrees closely with that measured using traditional optical techniques but the ultrasound technique is easier and faster than optical methods. A slight asymmetry in the c-axis clustering is revealed by the shear-wave data and increases with increasing depth, indicating that deformation is not symmetric about the vertical at the site.

Statistical analyses and model experiments suggest that the sea-ice cover is predictable weeks to months in advance. As such, it is one of the most highly predictable components of the climate system. The thermodynamic mechanisms by which this predictability can be realized are examined. It is found that the predictability is dependent on the differential growth/decay of sea ice as a function of thickness. In winter or year-round, for thin ice, the growth/decay rates are a strong function of thickness, which gives a relatively short period of predictability, though still long compared to the atmosphere. In summer, or year-round for thick ice, growth/decay rates are only weak functions of thickness and the period of predictability is comparatively long.

Distance measurements using an automated electronic distance-measurement system in the north cirque of Storglaciären, Sweden, during the summer of 1989, revealed a diurnal variation in glacier speed. Amplitude and timing of the diurnal cycle correlate well with the timing and intensity of the diurnal temperature cycle, indicating that speed responds to variations in daily melt with a lag of approximately 4 h. One 2 d period of non-diurnal velocity variations corresponded with a large rainfall event. Finite-element modeling suggests that these velocity variations must be closely related to water inputs in the cirque rather than to longitudinal coupling with lower parts of the glacier.

The decay of a lake-ice cover in the Canadian High Arctic was studied for 2 years. Melt at the upper surface accounted for 75% of the decrease in ice thickness, while 25% occurred at the ice–water interface. An energy-balance model, incorporating density reduction due to internal ice melt, was used to simulate the decay of the ice cover. The overall performance of the model was satisfactory despite periods when computed results differed from the observed ice decay. Energy-balance calculations indicated that the absorption of shortwave radiation within the ice provided 52% of the melt energy while 33 and 15% came from the surface-energy balance and heat flux from the water.

The shear strength of deforming till beneath Storglaciären, Sweden, was continuously measured with a new instrument, a “dragometer”. A cylinder with conical ends, roughened with till from the glacier bed, was dragged through the till, and the force on the cylinder was recorded. Consistent with studies of cone penetration in soils, it was assumed that the till behaves as a Coulomb plastic material. This allows the residual strength of the till to be calculated from the measured force. Results from laboratory experiments confirm the validity of the analytical procedure.

The average residual strength of the till was ∼55 kPa. A source of error is the potential generation of pore pressure in excess of hydrostatic ahead of the cylinder, which could significantly weaken the till. Calculations indicate that excess pore pressure did not develop during the experiment, but could develop during similar experiments beneath rapidly sliding glaciers with less permeable basal till layers.
