A new representation for the characteristic function of the multivariate strictly geo-stable distribution is presented. The representation is appealing from a parametric viewpoint: its parameters have an intuitive probabilistic interpretation; and it is particularly useful for estimating the parameters of the geo-stable distribution.

This study is motivated by problems of molecular sequence comparison for multiple marker arrays with correlated distributions. In this paper, the model assumes two (or more) kinds of markers, say Markers A and B, distributed along the DNA sequence. The two primary conditions of interest are (i) many of Marker B (say ≥ m) occur, and (ii) few of Marker B (say ≤ l) occur. We title these the conditional r-scan models, and inquire on the extent to which Marker A clusters or is over-dispersed in regions satisfying condition (i) or (ii). Limiting distributions for the extremal r-scan statistics from the A array satisfying conditions (i) and (ii) are derived by extending the Chen-Stein Poisson approximation method.

We show that the solution of a quasi-renewal equation with an exponential distribution of the renewals converges at infinity and we compute explicitly the limit, hence generalizing the classical renewal theorem. We apply this result to a stochastic model of DNA replication introduced by Cowan and Chiu (1994).

We consider an investment model which generalizes a number of models that have been studied in the literature. The model involves entry and exit decisions as well as decisions relating to production scheduling. We then address the problem of its valuation from the standpoint of the dynamic programming approach. Our analysis results in a closed form analytic solution that can take qualitatively different forms depending on parameter values.

Miyazawa and Taylor (1997) introduced a class of assemble-transfer batch service queueing networks which do not have tractable stationary distribution. However by assuming a certain additional arrival process at each node when it is empty, they obtain a geometric product-form stationary distribution which is a stochastic upper bound for the stationary distribution of the original network. In this paper we develop a stochastic lower bound for the original network by introducing an additional departure process at each node which tends to remove all the customers present in it. This model in combination with the aforementioned upper bound model gives a better sense for the properties of the original network.

We use embedding techniques to analyse the error of approximation of an optimal stopping problem along Brownian paths when Brownian motion is approximated by a random walk.

We define a class of anticipative flows on Poisson space and compute its Radon-Nikodym derivative. This result is applied to statistical testing in an anticipative queueing problem.

Technology developed in a predecessor paper (Chen and Seneta (1996)) is applied to provide, in a unified manner, a sharpening of bivariate Bonferroni-type bounds on P(v1≥r, v2≥u) obtained by Galambos and Lee (1992; upper bound) and Chen and Seneta (1986; lower bound).

In this note, we derive an inequality for the renewal process. Then, using this inequality, together with an identity in terms of the renewal process for the tails of random sums, we prove that a class of random sums is always new worse than used (NWU). Thus, the well-known NWU property of geometric sums is extended to the class of random sums. This class is illustrated by some examples, including geometric sums, mixed geometric sums, certain mixed Poisson distributions and certain negative binomial sums.

We argue the importance both of developing simple sufficient conditions for the stability of general multiclass queueing networks and also of assessing such conditions under a range of assumptions on the weight of the traffic flowing between service stations. To achieve the former, we review a peak-rate stability condition and extend its range of application and for the latter, we introduce a generalisation of the Lu–Kumar network on which the stability condition may be tested for a range of traffic configurations. The peak-rate condition is close to exact when the between-station traffic is light, but degrades as this traffic increases.

We consider a network traffic model consisting of an infinite number of sources linked to a server. Sources initiate transmissions to the server at Poisson time points. The duration of each transmission has a heavy-tailed distribution. We show that suitable scalings of the traffic process converge to a totally skewed stable Lévy motion in Skorohod space, equipped with the Skorohod M1 topology. This allows us to prove a heavy-traffic theorem for a single-server fluid model.

It is common practice to approximate the cell loss probability (CLP) of cells entering a finite buffer by the overflow probability (OVFL) of a corresponding infinite buffer queue, since the CLP is typically harder to estimate. We obtain exact asymptotic results for CLP and OVFL for time-slotted queues where block arrivals in different time slots are i.i.d. and one cell is served per time slot. In this case the ratio of CLP to OVFL is asymptotically (1-ρ)/ρ, where ρ is the use or, equivalently, the mean arrival rate per time slot. Analogous asymptotic results are obtained for continuous time M/G/1 queues. In this case the ratio of CLP to OVFL is asymptotically 1-ρ.

We study a one-dimensional supercritical branching random walk in a non-i.i.d. random environment, which considers both the branching mechanism and the step transition. This random environment is constructed using a recurrent Markov chain on a finite or countable state space. Criteria of (strong) recurrence and transience are presented for this model.

In a recent paper [4] it was shown that, for an absorbing Markov chain where absorption is not guaranteed, the state probabilities at time t conditional on non-absorption by t generally depend on t. Conditions were derived under which there can be no initial distribution such that the conditional state probabilities are stationary. The purpose of this note is to show that these conditions can be relaxed completely: we prove, once and for all, that there are no circumstances under which a quasistationary distribution can admit a stationary conditional interpretation.

In this paper we consider an irreducible random walk in Z+ defined by X(m+1) = max(0, X(m) + A(m+1)) with E{A} < 0 and for an s ≥ 0 where a+ = max(0,a). Let π be the stationary distribution of X. We show that one can find probability distributions πn supported by {0,n} such that ||πn - π||1 ≤ Cn-s, where the constant C is computable in terms of the moments of A, and also that ||πn - π||1 = o(n-s). Moreover, this upper bound reveals exact for s ≥ 1, in the sense that, for any positive ε, we can find a random walk fulfilling the above assumptions and for which the relation ||πn - π||1 = o(n-s-ε) does not hold. This result is used to derive the exact convergence rate of the time stationary distribution of an M/GI/1/n queueing system to the time stationary distribution of the corresponding M/GI/1 queueing system when n tends to infinity.

We analyze the smoothing effect of superposing homogeneous sources in a network. We consider a tandem queueing network representing the nodes that customers generated by these sources pass through. The servers in the tandem queues have different time varying service rates. In between the tandem queues there are propagation delays. We show that for arbitrary arrival and service processes which are mutually independent, the sum of unfinished works in the tandem queues is monotone in the number of homogeneous sources in the increasing convex order sense, provided the total intensity of the foreground traffic is constant. The results hold for both fluid and discrete traffic models.

Consider a janken game (scissors-paper-rock game) started by n players such that (1) the first round is played by n players, (2) the losers of each round (if any) retire from the rest of the game, and (3) the game ends when only one player (winner) is left. Let Wn be the number of rounds played through the game. Among other things, it is proved that (2/3)nWn is asymptotically (as n → ∞) distributed according to the exponential distribution with mean ⅓, provided that each player chooses one of the three strategies (scissors, paper, rock) with equal probability and independently from other players in any round.

This short note shows that the Lundberg exponential upper bound in the ruin problem of non-life insurance with compound Poisson claims is also valid for the Poisson shot noise delayed-claims model, and that the optimal exponent depends only on the distribution of the total claim per accident, not on the time it takes to honour the claim. This result holds under Cramer's condition.

The use of bias optimality to distinguish among gain optimal policies was recently studied by Haviv and Puterman [1] and extended in Lewis et al. [2]. In [1], upon arrival to an M/M/1 queue, customers offer the gatekeeper a reward R. If accepted, the gatekeeper immediately receives the reward, but is charged a holding cost, c(s), depending on the number of customers in the system. The gatekeeper, whose objective is to ‘maximize’ rewards, must decide whether to admit the customer. If the customer is accepted, the customer joins the queue and awaits service. Haviv and Puterman [1] showed there can be only two Markovian, stationary, deterministic gain optimal policies and that only the policy which uses the larger control limit is bias optimal. This showed the usefulness of bias optimality to distinguish between gain optimal policies. In the same paper, they conjectured that if the gatekeeper receives the reward upon completion of a job instead of upon entry, the bias optimal policy will be the lower control limit. This note confirms that conjecture.

New bounds are found for the reliability of consecutive-k-out-of-n:F systems with equal component failure probabilities. The expressions involved are simple, thus allowing a direct use in the derivation of theoretical properties.

These bounds can also be employed in numerical computations when the value of n or k is so large that the exact calculation of the reliability is not achievable. Comparisons show that the approximation errors exhibited by these new formulas are lower than those of other widely used bounds.
