Kinetic studies of Ca metabolism, using 45CaCl32, were carried out on two mature red deer stags during the period of maximum rate of Ca deposition in the antlers. They were offered green-feed oats to provide energy for maintenance; the diet provided approximately 42mg Ca/kg W per day.

Ca appeared to be irreversibly lost from the circulation into the antlers and could be treated for kinetic purposes in the same way as loss of Ca from the body in milk. The size of the rapidly exchangeable Ca pool in the body, excluding the antlers, was 0·21 g/kg W, similar to estimates for lactating cattle. Rates of Ca deposition in the antlers of the two stags, calculated from the model of Ca metabolism, were 58·4 and 38·6 mg Ca/kg W per day. Net endogenous loss was 6–7 mg Ca/kg W per day, much lower than estimates available for other ruminant species. Only 25–40% of Ca requirement or 11–24 mg Ca/kg W per day was derived from the diet, suggesting that the availability of Ca in greenfeed oats is much lower than current estimates for forages. Bones removed on completion of the experiment showed evidence of considerable skeletal demineralization.

In other stags subjected to stable Ca balances at the same stage of antler growth, while consuming ryegrass-white clover forage, 60–80% of Ca requirement was derived from the diet, with calculated rates of true absorption of 32–46 mg Ca/kg W per day. These rates of Ca absorption are low compared with values observed in other ruminants at times of high Ca demand such as during lactation.

Drought is the main factor limiting the productivity of crops in Mediterranean areas. The introduction of physiological traits into crops that improve their tolerance to drought is necessary if yields under these conditions are to be efficiently improved. The effect of drought on different gas exchange variables, i.e. net photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf chlorophyll concentration (Chl), and the relationship of these variables with yield were studied in 12 barley genotypes grown under irrigated and terminal drought conditions. The variable most sensitive to water deficit was gs (mean reduction 43% with respect to control conditions), followed by A (mean reduction 34%). The mean reduction of yield by terminal drought was 27%. A significant correlation was seen between these physiological traits and yield. The effect of water deficit on A, gs and Chl was smaller in the breeding lines than in the traditional varieties assayed, in agreement with the results found for yield. These results suggest a potential indirect selection of physiological characteristics in these breeding lines that allow greater tolerance to drought. The response of the different genotypes examined was not homogeneous across all the variables analysed. This variability is important in programmes aiming to obtain drought-tolerant genotypes via the optimization of traits such as those above.

Observations were made in 1994 and 1995 in Hertfordshire of the flowering phenology and attractiveness to beneficial insects of two commercial mixtures of flowering plants intended for set-aside land. These were the Tübingen Mixture from Germany and Ascot Linde SN from the Netherlands. The mixtures were visited by 14 species of Hymenoptera, 14 species of syrphid Diptera and six species of Lepidoptera. Although the mixtures contained 12 and five plant species respectively, Phacelia tanacetifolia was the dominant species to establish, flower and attract insects in both mixtures. The other plants contributed little to flower density or insect diversity. These mixtures are therefore not suitable for UK needs using the present proportions of plant species.

It has been previously shown in this laboratory that feeding a model condensed tannin, quebracho tannin, reduces the small intestinal nematode burden in sheep and rats. The aim of the current programme was to determine whether this occurs through direct toxicity against the parasites. Both in vivo and in vitro studies were conducted. The first study compared the effect of dietary quebracho tannin (40 g/kg) on the establishment of the parasitic nematodes Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and Trichinella spiralis in the rat small intestine. The burden of N. brasiliensis, which, although closely associated with the mucosa, actually dwells within the small intestinal lumen, was significantly reduced (P<0·001) by dietary quebracho tannin. In contrast, T. spiralis, which penetrates into the small intestinal mucosa, was unaffected (>0·05) by the dietary inclusion of quebracho tannin. The second study involved monitoring the survival of adult N. brasiliensis and T. spiralis when incubated in vitro in varying concentrations of quebracho tannin in Hanks’ balanced salt solution. The survival of N. brasiliensis was compromised at concentrations as low as 0·01% (w/v) quebracho tannin but improved with the addition of 0·1% (w/v) polyethylene glycol, which binds to, and inactivates, tannin. T. spiralis was similarly affected, but much more rapidly. These results suggest that dietary quebracho tannin may reduce nematode worm burdens through a toxic effect that requires direct contact between parasite and tannin. This raises the possibility that feeding locally available plant material containing condensed tannins may be an alternative method for controlling parasite infections, especially in areas such as the tropics and subtropics.

Seasonal patterns of antioxidative enzymes and proteins and their relations to cold-hardiness of nine olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars (Ascolona, Domat, Gemlik, Hojoblanca, Lecquest, Manzanilla, Meski, Samanli and Uslu) are documented in the current study. Fully expanded, uniformly sized leaves from 2-year-old shoots of the cultivars were collected from 20-year-old trees in cold-acclimated (CA, in January) and non-acclimated (NA, in July) stages. Leaf samples were exposed to low temperature at 4, −5, −10 and −20°C for 12 h to determine their cold-hardiness (LT50; assessed by electrolyte leakage). Cold-acclimation produced an increase in freezing tolerance of all cultivars (by lowering LT50). Domat and Lecquest were found to have the highest cold-hardiness among the nine cultivars investigated. Ascolona, Gemlik, Hojoblanca had moderate cold-hardiness, while Samanli, Meski, Uslu and Manzanilla were more sensitive. Activities of catalase (CAT: EC 1·11·1·6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX: EC 1·11·1·11) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase significantly varied depending on the cold-acclimation stage and the cold-hardiness level of the cultivars. Activities of the three antioxidative enzymes and total soluble proteins (TSP) were higher in the CA stage than in the NA stage. Although no accumulation of major polypeptides, except a 23 kDa protein, was detected either in CA samples or NA samples by SDS-PAGE, anti-dehydrin immunoblots revealed that the 43 and 23 kDa polypeptides were detectable during cold-acclimation of olive cultivars. Accumulation of both 43 and 23 kDa dehydrin was significantly higher in the CA stage than in the NA stage in all cultivars. Accumulation of 43 kDa dehydrin was correlated with cold-hardiness of the cultivars, while 23 kDa dehydrin was considered as cultivar-dependent since its accumulation was not parallel to LT50 values of the cultivars. Indeed, the tissues of cvs Domat, Lecquest, Ascolona, Hojoblanca and Gemlik were found to enhance the structural stability of cellular membranes in the CA stage by increasing both the activity of such enzymes as CAT, APX and NADPH oxidase to activate the antioxidative systems and the expression of 43 kDa dehydrins.

As with any measurement procedure, the performance of a subjective classification procedure must be evaluated. Observers have to be trained and their performance has to be assessed, preferably on a regular basis, to guarantee sufficient consistency and accuracy of classification results. The current paper is a study of observer performance where observers were asked to classify the gait of cows from video recordings. Gait was classified in nine ordered categories (ranging from 1=normal gait to 9=severely abnormal gait) and also as a continuous fraction by putting a mark on a paper strip (the left end corresponding to 0=normal gait and the right end to 1=severely abnormal gait). The use of statistical models and methodology for analysis of these visual scores is demonstrated and discussed. Observers were assessed by comparing their classification results with the results of an expert. Models and methodology take proper account of typical features of the data, i.e. the fact that data are discrete scores or continuous scores with an upper and lower bound, the variance heterogeneity and non-linearity of model terms that arises from this, and the dependence between repeated classifications of videos of the same cow. Results of the analyses are summarized in simple tables and plots. These are useful tools to indicate possible flaws in judgement of an observer, that may be corrected by further training. When a high standard is developed, which usually takes the form of the opinion of one or more experts, this methodology can be applied prior to any experiment where responses are ordered subjective scores.

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv Mercia) was grown at Rothamsted over three seasons (1992/94/95) with plant-available soil P (Olsen-P) ranging from very deficient to superoptimal (1–52 mg P/kg; ADAS soil P Index 0–4). Critical Olsen-P for 95% maximum grain yield changed little between years and averaged 9 mg P/kg. Total-P and inorganic-P (Pi) were measured in whole shoots several times between late tillering and anthesis to see if Pi was a better indicator than total-P of the adequacy of P supply for maximum grain yield. Inorganic-P accumulated in shoot tissue water with increasing Olsen-P to a maximum concentration of c. 15 mM. Inorganic-P was a better indicator of crop P status as there was less variation in critical values between seasons and with crop growth stage. Expressing Pi concentrations on a tissue water basis (Piw) reduced the effect of differences in soil water supply and also offers the prospect of in situ testing. Over the three seasons, critical shoot Piw for 95% maximum grain yield averaged 4.7 mM (range 4·3–5·8 mM) during stem elongation.

1. In a series of experiments with cannulated lambs the amounts of 2, 6-diaminopimelic acid (DAPA) and a-amino nitrogen passing daily through the abomasum, terminal ileum and rectum were measured. While there was a very significant net absorption of α-amino nitrogen between the abomasum and terminal ileum, there was no net absorption of DAPA between these points. Indeed, there was a tendency for more DAPA to leave the terminal ileum than entered the abomasum, though this was only significant at the 10% level. In all cases significantly less DAPA passed out of the rectum than passed through the terminal ileum, indicating extensive degradation of this amino acid in the hind-gut, probably as a result of microbial activity.

2. In adult sheep given control rations no DAPA could be detected in the blood, even when 643 ml plasma were analysed. These sheep usually excreted less than 5 mg DAPA daily in the urine.

3. When synthetic DAPA was introduced into the peritoneum, blood, abomasum, rumen or caecum of cannulated adult sheep in physiological amounts, approximately 80, 83, 53, 5 and 0 % of the administered dose was recovered in the urine. Furthermore, when introduced into the abomasum, DAPA could be measured in plasma from the anterior mesenteric and jugular veins.

4. It was concluded that in the normal sheep the DAPA-containing fraction of the bacterial cell-wall material synthesized in the rumen is not digested in the small intestine. In the caecum and colon, however, this fraction is extensively degraded by hindgut bacteria.

1. Measurements of the temperatures of the extremities, rectal temperatures, respiratory rates and heart rates have been made in calves during exposure at environmental temperatures within the range – 5·0° –45·0° C.

2. Large variations in the skin temperatures of the extremities were recorded between environmental temperatures of –5·0° and 25·0° C. At environmental temperatures above 25·0° C. the extremity temperatures and the skin temperatures of the trunk were similar.

3. Feeding and localized infra-red irradiation of part of the trunk of the animals resulted in marked increases in the skin temperatures of the unheated extremities.

4. Evidence was obtained that the variations in the skin temperatures of the extremities were brought about by changes of blood flow to these parts.

5. Respiratory rates varied also with the environmental temperature at which the animals were exposed. When the animals were exposed to localized infra-red irradiation of the trunk the increase in respiratory rate was significantly greater when the extremities were initially warm than when they were cool.

6. In addition to spontaneous fluctuations in the skin temperatures of the ears at environmental temperatures of 10·0°–25·0° C, periodic increases in the skin temperatures of the ears were observed in all the calves at an environmental temperature of – 5·0° C. The increase in the skin temperatures of the ears persisted throughout the 7 hr. exposure to an environmental temperature of – 5·0° C.

7. It was concluded that, in a temperate climate, variations in the skin temperatures of the extremities of the ox have a thermoregulatory function.

1. An investigation has been carried out on the food value of beef from steers and heifers. A very varied group was used, selected as being representative of the beef animals slaughtered in England in war time. The animals were from five breeds; ages varied from 1 to over 4 years, live weights from 6½ to 14 cwt. and dressing-out percentages from 50 to 62.

2. The chemical composition of the beef varied widely. The fat from the edible meat, expressed as a percentage of the live weight, varied from 4·6 to 21·6 %, the protein from 6·1 to 7·4%, and the water from 22·8 to 27·4%. The ratio of fat to protein in the edible meat varied from 0·7: 1 to 3·4: 1.

There have been a number of reports on the frozen storage of ram semen, and artificial insemination with frozen semen has been performed on an experimental basis in several countries. Intensive laboratory studies led to considerable progress regarding the freezing and thawing procedures (Salamon & Visser, 1972; Colas, 1975). However, fertility following insemination tends to be considerably lower than for fresh or chilled semen (Maxwell et al. 1980).

Ninety-six Friesian cows were used to determine the effects of pattern of allocation of a fixed amount of concentrates on milk yield during the treatment and residual periods (weeks 1–20 and 21–44 respectively) and on the whole lactation. Thirty-two were in their second and the remainder in their third or later lactation. Second-lactation cows were used to form separate blocks.

Four treatments were imposed for the first 20 weeks of lactation; these were Graded (G), Woodman (W), High Fixed (HF), and Low Fixed (LF). The first three treatments involved the same total amount of concentrate but fed in different daily amounts. Treatment W received Woodman's standard (Evans, 1960) amounts of feed according to a predetermined lactation curve derived from earlier experience in the herd; treatment G reallocated the same allowance by feeding more than W in weeks 1–12 and less during weeks 13–20; the HF treatment was a fixed daily amount of 6·4 kg, in total also equal to W total. LF was a fixed daily amount of 4·0 kg/day. The maintenance allowance was the same for all cows within a block and based on hay, dried sugar-beet pulp and barley meal. During weeks 21–44 all cows within a block received the same treatment; either grazing or self-fed silage and supplementary concentrates according to the time of year.

There were significant differences in milk yield during the treatment period resulting from plane of feeding (W, G and HF greater than LF; P < 0·001) but no significant differences arising from the pattern of feeding. In the residual period (weeks 21–44) there was no significant difference between the yields of second-lactation treatment groups. Thus for the whole lactation the yields of treatments G, W and HF were significantly greater than LF. However, for the older cows there were differences in the residual period and treatment groups G and LF gave significantly more milk than group W (P < 0·001 and P < 0·05 respectively). Over the whole lactation treatment group G gave significantly more milk than LF (P < 0·001), W (P < 0·01) and HF (P < 0·05). Furthermore, the increase in total lactation yield of G compared with W was 4·5 times the increase observed in weeks 1–20.

Cows of both age groups on treatment HF, unlike those on treatments W and G, never achieved a distinct peak yield but their mean weekly rate of decline was significantly less.

Live-weight changes varied between treatments and between age groups and were significantly correlated with milk yield in weeks 1–20.

There were no significant effects of treatments on milk composition in either age group at any stage of the lactation. The minimum value for solids-not-fat content for the cows on the LF treatment was unacceptably low.

It is suggested that for cows of moderate yield potential fed to Woodman's standards (Evans, 1960) the actual pattern of feeding a predetermined amount of concentrates has little effect on the yield or quality of milk. For cows of high potential a redistribution of concentrates to allow earlier more generous feeding will increase milk yield.

The rate of decline of milk yield is a characteristic of both cow potential and pattern of feeding and an adoption of a standard 2½% a week should be viewed with caution.

The effects of several detillering treatments on dry-matter production and grain yield in barley were investigated in a series of pot experiments using two water regimes. When ample water was provided, even quite severe reductions in the number of tillers only slightly reduced grain yield in spite of large effects on total shoot dry weight. When all the plants were grown with the same amount of water, however, the plants with few tillers tended to have greater grain yield, higher water use efficiency (in terms of grain yield) and higher harvest index than the plants permitted to tiller freely. This effect was probably related to the greater transpiration rates from the freely tillering plants which led to their suffering a greater degree of water stress than the plants with few tillers. This led to the freely tillering plants having a greater proportion of sterile ears and a lower harvest index. Water stress apparently had no effect on the grain yield of the main shoot or first tiller. It is concluded that genotypes which produce few large tillers having a high rate of survival should be able to achieve relatively high yields in drought conditions without sacrificing yield potential under optimal conditions.

A study has been made of the relationships of sterile Friesian bulls manifesting ‘knobbed’ spermatozoa, and the conclusion drawn that the characteristic defect of the acrosome is due to an autosomal sexlimited recessive gene (kn).

Three successive field experiments (2000/01–2002/03) assessed the effect of wheat cultivar (Consort, Hereward and Shamrock) and fungicide (epoxiconazole and azoxystrobin) applied at and after flag leaf emergence on the nitrogen in the above-ground crop (Total N) and grain (Grain N), net nitrogen remobilization from non-grain tissues (Remobilized N), grain dry matter (Grain DM), and nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtEg=Grain DM/Total N). Ordinary logistic curves were fitted to the accumulation of Grain N, Grain DM and Remobilized N against thermal time after anthesis and used to simultaneously derive fits for Total N and NUtEg.

When disease was controlled, Consort achieved the greatest Grain DM, Total N, Grain N and NUtEg; in each case due mostly to longer durations, rather than quicker rates, of accumulation. Fungicide application increased final Grain DM, Grain N, Total N and Remobilized N, also mostly through effects on duration rather than rate of accumulation. Completely senesced leaf laminas retained less nitrogen when fungicide had been applied compared with leaf laminas previously infected severely with brown rust (Puccinia recondita) and Septoria tritici, or with just S. tritici. Late movement of nitrogen out of fungicide-treated laminas contributed to extended duration of both nitrogen remobilization and grain N filling, and meant that increases in NUtEg could occur without simultaneous reductions in grain N concentration.

Increasing recognition of the extent to which nitrous oxide (N2O) contributes to climate change has resulted in greater demand to improve quantification of N2O emissions, identify emission sources and suggest mitigation options. Agriculture is by far the largest source and grasslands, occupying c. 0·22 of European agricultural land, are a major land-use within this sector. The application of mineral fertilizers to optimize pasture yields is a major source of N2O and with increasing pressure to increase agricultural productivity, options to quantify and reduce emissions whilst maintaining sufficient grassland for a given intensity of production are required. Identification of the source and extent of emissions will help to improve reporting in national inventories, with the most common approach using the IPCC emission factor (EF) default, where 0·01 of added nitrogen fertilizer is assumed to be emitted directly as N2O. The current experiment aimed to establish the suitability of applying this EF to fertilized Scottish grasslands and to identify variation in the EF depending on the application rate of ammonium nitrate (AN). Mitigation options to reduce N2O emissions were also investigated, including the use of urea fertilizer in place of AN, addition of a nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) and application of AN in smaller, more frequent doses. Nitrous oxide emissions were measured from a cut grassland in south-west Scotland from March 2011 to March 2012. Grass yield was also measured to establish the impact of mitigation options on grass production, along with soil and environmental variables to improve understanding of the controls on N2O emissions. A monotonic increase in annual cumulative N2O emissions was observed with increasing AN application rate. Emission factors ranging from 1·06–1·34% were measured for AN application rates between 80 and 320 kg N/ha, with a mean of 1·19%. A lack of any significant difference between these EFs indicates that use of a uniform EF is suitable over these application rates. The mean EF of 1·19% exceeds the IPCC default 1%, suggesting that use of the default value may underestimate emissions of AN-fertilizer-induced N2O loss from Scottish grasslands. The increase in emissions beyond an application rate of 320 kg N/ha produced an EF of 1·74%, significantly different to that from lower application rates and much greater than the 1% default. An EF of 0·89% for urea fertilizer and 0·59% for urea with DCD suggests that N2O quantification using the IPCC default EF will overestimate emissions for grasslands where these fertilizers are applied. Large rainfall shortly after fertilizer application appears to be the main trigger for N2O emissions, thus applicability of the 1% EF could vary and depend on the weather conditions at the time of fertilizer application.

Twenty-eight high genetic merit and 32 medium genetic merit Holstein/Friesian dairy cows with Predicted Transmitting Abilities for milk fat plus protein yield, calculated using 1995 as the base year (PTA95 fat plus protein) of 43·3 and 1·0 kg respectively, were used in a continuous design, 2 (cow genotypes)×4 (concentrate proportion in diet) factorial experiment consisting of eight treatments. Concentrate proportions in the diet were 0·37, 0·48, 0·59 and 0·70 of total dry matter (DM), while the forage component of the diet was grass silage. Diets were offered ad libitum in the form of a complete diet. Animals remained on these concentrate regimes for a mean of 84·7 days before completing a standard 98-day grazing period. At pasture, cows received either 5·0 or 6·0 kg concentrate daily according to turnout date. There were no significant genotype×nutrition interactions for any of the variables examined during either the indoor feeding or post-turnout grazing periods (P<0·05). Outputs of milk, fat, protein and fat + protein were greater for high merit cows than for medium merit animals (P<0·001). Milk output and milk protein output responses to increasing concentrate proportion were linear for both cow genotypes (P<0·001), while high merit animals showed a linear response in terms of milk fat plus protein output (P<0·01) with these responses being statistically parallel for both merits. High merit cows had a significantly higher DM intake than medium merit animals (P<0·01). With high merit animals, concentrate proportion had little effect on body tissue reserves, while medium merit animals showed a tendency for increased condition score and backfat thickness with increasing concentrate inclusions (P<0·05). In terms of the output of milk and milk constituents during the grazing period, there were no significant residual effects from winter concentrate feed rate (P>0·05), while high merit cows continued to have higher outputs of milk and milk constituents (P<0·001). Body tissue reserves of both genotypes changed little during the grazing period. It is likely that the higher milk yields of the high merit cows can be attributed both to their higher DM intakes and their ability to partition a greater proportion of the nutrients consumed into milk rather than body tissue reserves. Although statistically both high and medium merit cows responded in a similar manner to an increasing proportion of concentrate in the diet, high merit cows did exhibit a 49% greater fat plus protein yield response during the indoor period, compared to animals of medium genetic merit, perhaps hinting at the existence of a genotype×nutrition interaction.

Calves were reared on milk replacer up to 5 weeks of age and given ad libitum access to pellets and chopped straw from 1 to 10 weeks of age. Major ingredients of the pellets were ground barley (B) or ground barley and grass meal in a 6:4 ratio (G). Included in these two basal diets were NaCl or NaHCO3, each at 2, 11, 20 or 29 g Na/kg D.M.

Calves on G diets ate more than those on B diets but grew at a similar rate. The replacement value of grass meal for ground barley was 1·36:1. Most responses to Na inclusions were unaffected by the basal diets.

Before weaning there were linear increases in food intake and growth rate related to Na level in the diet. At 29 g Na/kg D.M., total D.M. intake/kg0.75 and growth rate were respectively 31 and 23% greater than at 2 g Na/kg D.M. After weaning there were differential responses to the two salts. With NaHC03 there were linear increases in food intake and growth rate up to 20 g Na/kg D.M., at which level total D.M. intake/kg0.75 and growth rate were respectively 36 and 44% greater than at 2 g Na/kg D.M. With NaCl the only significant response was that total D.M. intake at 11 g Na/kg D.M. was 16% higher than at 2 g Na/kg D.M.

Observations on acid-base balance and water intake indicated that inclusions of NaCl or NaHCO3 up to 20 g Na/kg D.M. were well tolerated by calves. Above this level there was a sharp increase in water intake, and with NaHCO3 there was a large base excess and high pH in the blood.

The allelic composition at five glutenin loci was assessed by one-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (1D SDS–PAGE) on a set of 155 landraces (from 21 Mediterranean countries) and 18 representative modern varieties. Gluten strength was determined by SDS-sedimentation on samples grown under rainfed conditions during 3 years in north-eastern Spain. One hundred and fourteen alleles/banding patterns were identified (25 at Glu-1 and 89 at Glu-2/Glu-3 loci); 0·85 of them were in landraces at very low frequency and 0·72 were unreported. Genetic diversity index was 0·71 for landraces and 0·38 for modern varieties. All modern varieties exhibited medium to strong gluten type with none of their 13 banding patterns having a significant effect on gluten-strength type. Ten banding patterns significantly affected gluten strength in landraces. Alleles Glu-B1e (band 20), Glu-A3a (band 6), Glu-A3d (bands 6 + 11), Glu-B3a (bands 2 + 4+15 + 19) and Glu-B2a (band 12) significantly increased the SDS-value, and their effects were associated with their frequency. Two alleles, Glu-A3b (band 5) and Glu-B2b (null), significantly reduced gluten strength, but only the effect of the latter locus could be associated with its frequency. Only three rare banding patterns affected gluten strength significantly: Glu-B1a (band 7), found in six landraces, had a negative effect, whereas banding patterns 2 + 4+14 + 15 + 18 and 2 + 4+15 + 18 + 19 at Glu-B3 had a positive effect. Landraces with outstanding gluten strength were more frequent in eastern than in western Mediterranean countries. The geographical pattern displayed from the frequencies of Glu-A1c is discussed.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is one of the most important sugar crops worldwide. Despite the fact that sugar beet crop has high requirements for boron (B), the effect of B applications on seed yield and on seed quality is not known. A 2-year field study was conducted to determine whether soil and foliar B applications during anthesis increase seed set, final seed yield and improve seed quality of sugar beets. Boron solutions were applied at four rates (0, 245, 490 and 735 mg/l of B) as foliar applications and at two rates (1·5 and 3 kg/ha of B) as soil applications to field plots exhibiting no vegetative symptoms of B deficiency. Foliar B application increased the concentration of B in vegetative and reproductive tissues much more than soil application. In addition, foliar B application increased the seed yield by an average of 10% in the first year and by an average of 44% in the second year. The mean seed weight was affected by B application as it was increased in both years. The proportion of larger seeds (>5·00 and 4·5–5·00 mm) increased with increasing application of B. Moreover, seed quality was affected and the proportion of abnormal seedlings was decreased with B application. However, seed vigour was not affected by B application. These data indicate that foliar B application can improve seed yield and seed quality of sugar beet grown for seed production. However, the physiological basis of this effect remains unknown.
