Introduction. Banana plants (Musa sp.) face problems caused by diseases such as Yellow Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella musicola), which is responsible for significant economic losses. Through micropropagation techniques, a somaclone variety called CIEN BTA-03 resistant to this disease was obtained. The purpose of this study was to compare fruits of somaclone CIEN BTA-03 and its parental clone Williams. Materials and methods. Fruits from both clones were studied, determining shape, weight, dimensions, proportions, pulp viscosity and consistency, total solids, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, sugars, ash, total phenolic content and crude fiber, and analyzing their color, odor and taste. Results and discussion. Clones differed in shape, weight and [pulp/peel] ratio. Pulps also differed in viscosity, pH, and soluble solids, sugars and phenolic compound contents. Differences between the two clones favored clone CIEN BTA-03, since it was better ranked for the color, odor and taste characteristics. Conclusion. Despite being resistant to Yellow Sigatoka, somaclone CIEN BTA-03 shows better sensory characteristics than its parental clone Williams.

Introduction. In Mexico, the rambutan is not a well-known fruit tree, but it has great potential for its establishment and development in the Soconusco region because of the local good agro-ecological conditions for the production of its fruit. Currently, there are already 200 ha of plantations in the region with a good adaptation and a rewarding yield. Rambutan history, cultivation practices, post-harvest operation and commercialisation in the Soconusco region were studied to identify the possibilities of an expansion of the species. In particular, the work aimed at identifying different varieties inside the rambutan orchards. Materials and methods. Four areas were studied from a survey in 14 farms. Different parameters of fruit quality were analysed (ten trees sampled per farm): fruit diameter, fruit length, rind colour, spintern appearance, aril diameter, aril length, aril weight, flesh colour, flavour, succulence, adherence of flesh, and presence of pests and diseases. Results. Fruit quality was dissimilar for the four studied areas. Among the different fruit samples collected, it appeared that the environment and cultivation management play an important role in fruit size. The diversity of varieties planted in the different sites was determined by clustering analyses. Independent of their site of origin, at least six well-defined cluster classes could be identified. Conclusion. Fruit weight, spintern appearance and colour, as well as fruit diameter and aril to fruit weight appeared to be good indicators to identify fruit quality. The clustering analyses showed that there is a wide range of overlapping varieties to be found in the Soconusco region. Six major varietal groups were identified. Further varietal differentiation and characterisation of rambutan in the Soconusco region will be necessary for a better establishment of this fruit tree crop.

Introduction. Au Maroc, le porte-greffe d’agrumes le plus utilisé est le bigaradier (Citrus aurantium L.). Il confère aux arbres une résistance acceptable vis-à-vis de la pourriture racinaire causée par Phytophthora parasitica. Cependant, la salinité des sols et des eaux d’irrigation observée dans la majorité des régions productrices d’agrumes au Maroc peuvent affecter cette résistance. L’objectif de notre expérimentation a été d’évaluer l’effet de la salinité sur la colonisation des racines de quelques porte-greffes d’agrumes par P. parasitica. Matériel et méthodes. Des plants de bigaradier, citrange Troyer (Poncirus trifoliata × Citrus sinensis) et Rough lemon (C. jambhiri) âgés de 6 mois ont été irrigués pendant 21 jours avec une solution de Hoagland à 50 % de potentiel osmotique variable, car ajusté à (–1,28, –2,32 et –3,11) bars par addition soit de chlorure de sodium (NaCl), soit de sulfate de sodium (Na2SO4). Une inoculation a alors été faite par trempage des systèmes racinaires dans une suspension de spores de P. parasitica pendant 24 h. Résultats. L’augmentation du potentiel osmotique de la solution d’irrigation par addition de NaCl ou de Na2SO4 a favorisé le développement d’une pourriture racinaire chez les trois porte-greffes. En outre, l’augmentation du potentiel osmotique de la solution d’irrigation par addition de NaCl a prédisposé les systèmes racinaires à une colonisation intense par P. parasitica. Discussion. L’effet spécifique de la salinité serait à l’origine de l’augmentation de la colonisation des racines des porte-greffes par P. parasitica.

Introduction. Irvingia gabonensis (Irvingiaceae) est un arbre fruitier des forêts denses humides dont les fruits et le bois sont très exploités par les populations locales. Plante allogame, la multiplication par semis entraîne une grande hétérogénéité génétique. Les techniques de multiplication végétative traditionnelle donnent un faible taux de multiplication. Le but principal de ce travail a été de mettre au point une technique de multiplication conforme in vitro des individus élites. Matériel et méthodes. Les microboutures ont été prélevées sur un plant d'Irvingia gabonensis portant des fruits mûrs. Après désinfection, elles ont été ensuite mises en culture sur un milieu dérivé de Murashige et Skoog dilué 4 fois (MS/4). Les effets de la kinétine ont été étudiés sur le débourrement et le développement des bourgeons axillaires. Les effets de la benzylaminopurine (BAP) ont été étudiés sur la prolifération des bourgeons des microboutures. Enfin, les effets de l'acide naphtalène acétique (ANA) ont été étudiés sur l'enracinement des vitroplants. Résultats. La kinétine à 3 mg$\cdot$L-1 a favorisé le meilleur débourrement et le meilleur développement des bourgeons axillaires. La BAP à 4,5 mg$\cdot$L-1 a permis la prolifération de 95 % des bourgeons de microboutures avec un nombre maximal de 5,1 bourgeons débourrés par microbouture. L'ANA à 2,5 mg$\cdot$L-1 a permis l'enracinement de 100 % des vitroplants issus des microboutures avec un nombre maximal de 12,6 racines par vitroplant et de 98 % des vitroplants issus des bourgeons isolés avec un nombre maximal de 9,2 racines par vitroplant. L'acclimatation des vitroplants a réussi à 88 %. Discussion et conclusion. En utilisant la BAP, 260 plants enracinés en conditions horticoles peuvent être obtenus annuellement à partir de 64 explants sains. Les résultats de ce travail ouvrent ainsi une nouvelle voie pour la production conforme de plant d'I. gabonensis qui pourront être utilisés pour la propagation et la domestication de cette espèce.

Introduction. En Tunisie, bien que des problèmes liés à la floraison et à la fructification se posent chez le grenadier (Punica granatum L.), aucune étude n'avait encore été menée sur cette espèce. Nos travaux ont donc cherché à étudier ces importantes étapes du cycle de reproduction de la plante chez certaines variétés locales de P. granatum exploitées dans les conditions tunisiennes. Matériel et méthodes. La dynamique de la floraison a été étudiée par le comptage régulier des fleurs formées sur branches des trois cultivars locaux : Gabsi, Kalaii et Garoussi. La chute des boutons floraux, des fleurs épanouies ou des jeunes fruits récemment noués a été comptabilisée pour l'arbre entier. Un suivi de la fertilité des fleurs et des essais d'autopollinisation par ensachage de rameaux de différentes longueurs ont été conduits sur le seul cultivar Gabsi. Résultats et discussion. La durée de la floraison a été de 8 semaines environ pour Gabsi et de 10 semaines pour Garoussi et Kalaii. Le maximum des fleurs a été obtenu entre la troisième et la cinquième semaine après le début de floraison. La majeure partie des fleurs est apparue sur du bois âgé d'un an ou plus. Le taux de rétention le plus élevé (8,4 %) a été enregistré chez le cultivar Gabsi. Les fruits ont surtout été obtenus à partir des fleurs hermaphrodites. Le calibre des fruits à la récolte a diminué au fur et à mesure que la date d'apparition des fleurs dont ils provenaient avait été tardive. Les rameaux courts ensachés n'ont pas retenu de fruits ; ceux de longueur moyenne ont permis un taux de nouaison de 2,3 % par rapport à la totalité des fleurs du rameau ; les rameaux de plus grande taille ont présenté un taux de 4,8 %. Conclusions. La floraison du grenadier est très échelonnée. Les cultivars étudiés ont différé en fonction de la date du début de floraison, de sa durée et de son intensité. Le régime de reproduction s'est révélé être l'allogamie préférentielle. L'étalement de la floraison et les particularités morpho-physiologiques des fleurs favoriseraient plutôt la pollinisation croisée.

Introduction. R.heudelotii (Euphorbiaceae) est un arbre fruitier des forêts denses humides, exploité par les populations locales. L’espèce est dioïque. La régénération par graines actuellement utilisée n’est pas aisée et elle entraîne une hétérogénéité génétique des descendants. Jusqu’à présent, la multiplication végétative horticole a surtout été basée sur l’utilisation de plantules issues des graines. Le but principal de notre travail a été de développer une méthode de multiplication conforme in vitro d’arbres adultes de R. heudoletii sélectionnés. Matériel et méthodes. Les boutures de 2 cm (un œil + un bourgeon axillaire) ont été prélevées sur une plante adulte de R. heudelotii, puis mises en culture, après stérilisation, sur un milieu de Murashige et Skoog dilué de moitié. Différentes concentrations de kinétine ont été ajoutées à ce milieu de base (MB) pour étudier l’effet de cette cytokinine sur le débourrement et le développement des bourgeons axillaires. De même, les effets de la benzylaminopurine (BAP) ajoutée à MB ont été parallèlement étudiés sur la prolifération des bourgeons présents au niveau des nœuds des boutures. Enfin, l’enracinement des boutures après culture soit sur milieu avec kinétine, soit sur milieu avec BAP a été testé par repiquage des boutures sur MB enrichi en acide naphtalèneacétique (ANA). Résultats. La BAP à 4,5 mg·L–1 a permis la prolifération de 91 % des bourgeons présents au niveau des nœuds sur boutures avec un maximum de 4,8 bourgeons néoformés par bouture. Cependant, l’isolement de ces bourgeons sur milieu enrichi en ANA n’a pas permis d’observer la différentiation de racines. La kinétine à 2,5 mg·L–1 a favorisé le débourrement et le meilleur développement des bourgeons axillaires (71 %). Le repiquage sur MB + 2 mg ANA·L–1 a favorisé l’enracinement de 72 % des boutures mises en cultures au départ sur MB + kinétine, avec un maximum de 6,3 racines formées par bouture. Le taux de réussite de l’acclimatation des vitroplants régénérés a été de 52,7 %. Discussion et conclusion. En utilisant la kinétine et l’ANA, un maximum de 36 vitroplants enracinés de R. heudelotii ont été régénérés en 22 semaines à partir de 50 boutures mises en culture. Ce taux de multiplication reste faible et, pour une multiplication conforme efficace de l’espèce, il devra être amélioré par la production complémentaire de vitroplants à partir de la prolifération des bourgeons obtenus sur milieu avec BAP.

Introduction. Adansonia digitata L., Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Del. et Tamarindus indica L. figurent parmi les espèces fruitières de cueillette les plus appréciées par les populations sahélo soudaniennes. Leur rôle sur le plan nutritionnel et sur la génération de revenus est important. La dégradation des écosystèmes constitue une menace sur la ressource en fruits de cueillette et sur la diversité génétique de ces espèces. La première étape du programme de domestication mis en œuvre au Sénégal consiste à en caractériser la variabilité naturelle, dans le cadre d’une démarche participative visant la sélection d’accessions intéressantes pour la qualité des fruits. L’objet de cette étude a été de comparer, pour chacune des espèces, les fruits de différentes accessions. Matériel et méthodes. Les analyses ont porté sur une caractérisation biométrique des fruits, complétée par une analyse chimique sommaire (eau, sucres solubles totaux, acidité libre totale). Résultats et discussion. Pour la totalité des critères étudiés, l’exploitation des données a montré des différences significatives entre les accessions au sein de chaque espèce. Pour les caractères biométriques, un gradient décroissant de variabilité apparaît selon la séquence : Adansonia vers Tamarindus vers Balanites. Le critère de « valeur réelle de la pulpe » a permis de cibler des accessions plus intéressantes que d’autres. Les caractères chimiques ont présenté une moindre variabilité. Conclusions. Les différentes accessions étudiées présentent une variabilité exploitable pour la diffusion aux populations locales de variétés performantes d’espèces fruitières répondant à leurs besoins et à leurs moyens.

Introduction. Damage of citrus fruits by the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata Weid. results in economic losses in Nigeria. The majority of the citrus producers are small-holders who are yet to adopt standard citrus production practices. A trial was therefore established in a savannah zone of Nigeria with a Southern Guinea agroecology to evaluate simple fruit fly control practices. Materials and methods. The efficacy of combining cultural practices such as removal of dropped fruits, changes of harvest period, and three applications of dimethoate/cypermethrine mixture in controlling fruit fly damage was tested on sweet orange Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck var. Valencia Late in 2000 and 2001. Results. Fruits attacked by C. capitata increased with fruit maturity and were positively correlated with the number of dropped fruits. Insecticide applications and removal of dropped fruits significantly reduced the number of fruits attacked by the fruit flies. Similarly, early harvesting at 50% fruit ripening significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the number of fruits attacked by the fruit flies when compared with the late harvesting at 90% ripening. The interactive effects of insecticide applications and the period of harvest significantly (P < 0.05) reduced attacks on fruits. Discussions. Judicious use of insecticides, periods of harvest and removal of fallen fruits reduce fruit fly damage. Late harvest and non-removal of fallen fruits constitute fruit fly reservoirs for the re-infestation of other clean fruits. Since the tested control methods were simple, they can be adopted by small-holders for the control of fruit flies.

Introduction. As a living organism, fruit is a site of intense gas exchange due to respiration. Carbon dioxide, oxygen and ethylene are the main components involved in this biological activity; they influence the fruit maturity and ripening phenomena. To help studies on pineapple ripening, this paper presents an easy technique to recover and measure the internal atmosphere of pineapple. Materials methods. Experiments were performed with 30 pineapples (two varieties) at the maturity stage. After a procedure validation with standard gas, the sampling technique was applied to pineapple pieces. The fruit’s internal atmosphere was released after scratching the fruit into a calcium chloride-saturated brine. The recovered gas was transferred into an air-tight flask equipped with a septum and a bladder. The headspace was analysed with a gas chromatograph or an IR analyser, at atmospheric pressure. Results. Twenty complete procedure cycles were done with three different standard gases to test the reproducibility of the technique. Each pineapple of each variety was sampled once according to the procedure. All of the results were situated in the best standardisation range for reproducibility. Conclusion. The main advantages and drawbacks of the technique are presented.

Introduction. In saline soils, the water absorption process of the plants is negatively affected, due to the permeability of the roots, leading to hydric stress. Plants under saline stress close their stomas earlier than plants not in these conditions; this causes an increase in stomatal resistance due to the decrease in water potential. The aim of the present research was to detect alterations in the stomatic behaviour and leaf water potential in young plants of Annona squamosa submitted to saline stress. Materials and methods. Sixty-day-old seedlings of A. squamosa were acclimated for 15 days in a greenhouse, before being submitted to different saline treatments. Five treatments (T0 = 0 mM; T1 = 25 mM; T2 = 50 mM; T3 = 75 mM and T4 = 100 mM of NaCl in a nutritive solution) were applied with six replications. The evaluations of the stomatic response occurred on the 20th, 30th, 40th, 60th, 80th and 90th days after the beginning of the saline treatments. The transpiration measures, diffusive resistance and leaf temperature were registered in the first mature leaf. The photosynthetically active radiation, relative humidity and air temperature within the greenhouse were simultaneously assessed 60 and 90 days after the beginning of treatments; then the leaf water potential (Rleaf) was also measured. Results. During the time of the experiment the leaf temperature and its difference from the air temperature was not affected by NaCl levels, but only 90 days after the beginning of the treatments the values observed in the control plants were lower than those observed in the 25 mM treatment. The diffusive resistance after 40 days was increased in all NaCl treatments. The transpiration, independent of treatment, was reduced by 44.1% (at 60 days) and 13.4% (at 90 days) with the 100-mM treatment compared with the control treatment. The increment in NaCl induced a decrease in Rleaf in all treatments, but an equal reduction was observed for each treatment after 60 and 90 days. Conclusion. The NaCl levels affected the transpiration and leaf water potential; however, the leaf water potential showed an equal reduction in all treatments on the 60th and 90th days.

Introduction. Une étude a été réalisée pour évaluer la variabilité génétique d'une collection d'écotypes de figuier (Ficus carica L.) établie dans la région du Sahel, en Tunisie. Elle a été basée sur l'observation de caractères morphologiques relatifs au développement végétatif de l'arbre. Matériel et méthodes. Les mensurations de feuilles et rameaux de 17 écotypes de figuiers tunisiens ont été mesurées à raison de deux arbres échantillonnés par cultivar. Les résultats ont été soumis à une analyse de variance et à des analyses multivariées qui ont permis d'obtenir une matrice des corrélations entre caractères mesurés et une table des distances de Mahalanobis entre les écotypes. Résultats et discussion. La variabilité intracultivar s'est révélée très faible. En revanche, la diversité intercultivar apparaît très importante et cela indépendamment de l'origine géographique et du sexe de la plante. Conclusion. Quelques paramètres morphologiques ont permis de bien différencier les cultivars. Ils pourraient être utilisés comme descripteurs chez cette espèce.

Introduction. Dennettia tripetala G. Baker (Annonaceae), or pepper fruit tree, is a well-known Nigerian spicy medicinal plant. The mineral, vitamin and nutrient composition of the fruit of Dennettia tripetala were determined. Materials and methods. Ripe fruits of Dennettia tripetala were analysed for proximate composition, and mineral and vitamin contents. Results and discussion. Our work showed that Dennettia tripetala contained crude protein (15.31%), total carbohydrate (62%), crude fibres (9.84%), crude lipids (3.47%) and moisture (8.0%). It had a calorific value of 480.24 g cal·100 g–1 of fresh fruit, and mineral content comprised: calcium (1.80%), phosphorus (0.33%), potassium (2.50%) and magnesium (0.42%). Trace elements included iron, copper, zinc and cadmium, but chromium was not detected. The water-soluble vitamins include ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. Conclusion. Our work justifies the use of Dennettia tripetala fruits as food and a drug in herbal medicine in Southeastern Nigeria.

Introduction. Le manguier aujourd’hui très apprécié en Afrique de l’Ouest pour ses fruits et son ombrage est pourtant d’introduction récente en Afrique. L’article retrace l’historique de son expansion dans la zone. L'expansion du manguier en Afrique de l’Ouest. Originaire d’Inde, le manguier a été signalé pour la première fois en Afrique de l’Ouest, au Sénégal, en 1824. C’est à la fin du xixe siècle que les manguiers ont commencé à connaître une diffusion significative, surtout dans les zones côtières. Leur extension deviendra importante pendant la première moitié du xxe siècle. Un manguier Amélie introduit au Mali vers 1890 fut à l’origine de nombreux plants greffés qui furent largement diffusés dans les pays limitrophes. Dès la fin des années 1940, des collections furent établies progressivement dans toute la zone et, au cours de la décennie 1970–1980, chaque pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest francophone possédait au moins une collection de manguiers. l'évolution des exportations. Le Mali fut le premier pays à exporter, vers la fin des années 1960, des mangues vers l’Europe. Il fut suivi par le Burkina, la Guinée, le Sénégal, et surtout la Côte d’Ivoire, dont les exportations, d’environ 2 500 t au début des années 1990, ont été multipliées par 4,5 en 2000. Cette croissance rapide des exportations ivoiriennes a bénéficié de la présence d’une façade maritime et d’un effet de masse créé par les exportations de bananes et d’ananas. Amélie a longtemps constitué l’essentiel des exportations du Mali, du Burkina Faso et de la Côte d’Ivoire. Cependant dès 1971, des expéditions expérimentales de mangues colorées furent réalisées avec succès. La consommation de mangues se démocratisant en Europe, le choix variétal s’est progressivement resserré : Amélie, en début de campagne, puis Kent, Keitt et Palmer. Parallèlement à cette évolution variétale, les techniques de conditionnement se sont progressivement modernisées.

Introduction. Sclerocarya birrea (A. Rich.) Hochst. is a common species in the dry zones of Africa. Although appreciated by the populations for its fruit, the subspecies birrea, present in Western Africa, remains not domesticated and under-utilized; the subspecies caffra, originating in Southern Africa, was recently domesticated there where it occupies a considerable economic role. Within the framework of a domestication programme led in Senegal, tests studied the development of the grafting applied to S. birrea subsp. birrea. Materials and methods. Scions taken from female mature trees were grafted on young rootstock plants at five periods during the year and according to three grafting techniques (tongue grafting, top grafting and side plate grafting). Results and discussion. The most favorable period for the grafting is at the end of the rain season; no significant difference was observed between the three types of grafting technique tested. Conclusions. The propagation technique highlighted could be developed for the ex situ conservation of the genetic diversity of Sclerocarya birrea subsp. birrea and also for the selection of varieties interesting for the criteria considered (yield and fruit quality, and rusticity). In time, S. birrea subsp. birrea could constitute in Western Africa a fruit tree crop for diversification.

Introduction. Our work aimed at reporting the occurrence of an anomaly in pineapple fruit in the state of Acre. Materials and methods. Fruit observations were accomplished in the pineapple experimental area of Embrapa Acre, in Rio Branco, AC, Brazil, from 1987 to 1998. Results and discussion. Typical symptoms of the studied anomaly were observed in the varieties Pérola, Quinari and Abacaxi de Tarauacá: an early yellowing of the skin of the superior half of the fruit was noted, while the skin of the lower half retained its green color, as if the fruit was not ripe yet. In the interior of the fruit, a cavity or crack was present in the area of the main axis. No plant pathogenic organism was isolated from the cavity inside the fruits. Also, it was not possible to relate the occurrence of abnormal fruits with climatic factors, considering that fruit with normal ripening of the same varieties were picked at about the same time from nearby pineapple plants. The occurrence of fruit with abnormal ripening was not observed in other pineapple varieties, such as Rio Branco, Cabeça-de-Onça and SNG-3, cultivated in Acre. Conclusions. It was not possible to associate the anomaly with biotic or non-biotic factors. Thus, it could be of physiological cause.

Introduction. Their physical and chemical properties make sandy tin tailings unsuitable for agricultural purposes without proper fertilizer and crop management practices. An attempt was made to use these tailings for sustainable production of pineapple using fertilization and irrigation techniques. Therefore, the objective of the study was to determine the effect of ground sucker size and levels of fertilizer used on yield and nutrient accumulation in plant components of pineapple cv. Josapine grown on sandy tin tailings. Materials and methods. Three fertilizer levels (plot 1, plot 2 and plot 3) containing N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Cu in solution and three classes of ground suckers (> 70 cm, 70–40 cm and < 70 cm) were used. They were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. There were 32 plants in each experimental plot. Each plot received a similar quantity of Fe, B, Mn, Zn and Mo. At harvest, each plant’s parts were divided into fruit, leaves, stem and roots. The dry matter yield and nutrient contents of each pineapple part were analyzed and recorded. Results and discussion. The highest and the lowest amounts of dry matter were 397 g·plant–1 (size > 70 cm) and 96 g·plant–1 (size < 70 cm), respectively. Total dry matter accumulation was greater (26%) for plot 1 than for plots 2 and 3. Substantial amounts of the dry matter accumulation occurred in leaves (45.0%) and fruit (34.0%) and less in stems (16.0%) and roots (5%). A similar pattern was also observed for the total (major and micro-) nutrient accumulation in the plant components. Besides the fruit parameters, the length of the pineapple stem is an important factor affecting the yield of pineapple, either expressed on a fresh (R2 = 0.904***) or dry (R2 = 0.855***) weight basis. Conclusion. Ground sucker size is a very important factor for successful production of a high fruit yield and quality of pineapple planted on sandy tin tailings.

Introduction. The lack of information in the literature regarding the most adequate sampling time and leaf for the assessment of the nutritional status of carambola trees limits the use of leaf analysis as a diagnostic method for this species. Therefore, we determined seasonal variations in the leaf mineral composition of carambola trees cultivated on acid soil and submitted to lime application in order to define criteria for the indication of the diagnostic leaf and the adequate sampling time. Materials and methods. The experiment was set up in a typic Hapludox in Bebedouro, São Paulo, Brazil, with lime doses of (0, 1.85, 3.79, 5.56 and 7.41) t·ha–1 applied in August 1999. Grafted carambola tree seedlings (cv. Malaysia) were planted in December 1999. To assess the nutritional status of the plants, the leaf’s macro- and micronutrient concentrations were determined in the third and sixth leaves, including the petiole, in flowering branches without fruits located in the middle third of the plant. Samples were collected throughout 2002, except for January and February due to the lack of flowers. Results and discussion. The results showed that the sixth leaf was more effective than the third leaf for the assessment of the nutritional status of carambola trees, with better differentiation of the lime effect on the levels of Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn, Cu and Fe, especially during the sampling period from August to October. Conclusion. In the area concerned with this study, the sixth leaf collected during the flowering peak from August to October appears ready to allow a nutritional diagnosis of carambola trees.

Introduction. Some fruit characteristics are very important for cherry marketing. This study aimed at determining relationships between some of them to help researchers on fruit quality. Materials and methods. The relationships between fruit cracking, fruit weight and diameter, soluble solid and acidity content, and fruit stalk thickness were determined on 35 sweet cherry cultivars in Amasya in Turkey. Results and discussion. There was a positive polynomial relationship between the fruit stalk thickness and fruit cracking; between fruit weight and fruit stalk thickness; and between fruit weight and fruit firmness. There was a positive relationship between the fruit weight and the acidity content, and between the fruit firmness, acidity and soluble solid. There was a negative relationship between fruit firmness and pH. Conclusions. Some relationships between cherry characteristics exist, which may help researchers to solve some problems such as fruit cracking. These studies may contribute to producing fruit with a good quality and help to evaluate new cultivars.

Introduction. The fruit of Averrhoa carambola L., or carambola, is an attractive tropical fruit of the Oxalidaceae family. As most of the carambola crop is consumed fresh, very few carambolas are processed. However, the high variability in fruit quality produced by Caribbean countries is a major limitation to market penetration. Processing of carambolas could allow the utilization of low quality fruits, which cannot be marketed, to reduce waste, improve on the economic returns of farmers and increase the value of the crop. Our work thus aimed at studying carambola wine quality in relation to certain treatments applied before the fermentation of the must. Materials and methods. Pectolase was added to the pasteurized carambola pulp to the concentrations of (0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3)%. Another treatment used pectolase to 0.3% with addition of 1% of citric acid and 0.25% of ascorbic acid and associated with the use of various yeast strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae from various wines (Super, Chablis and Sweet Mead). The must was adjusted to 25 °Brix and pH 3.0–3.5. The carambola wine quality obtained at the end of each treatment was assessed using physicochemical characteristics and sensory evaluations. Results and discussion. Addition of pectolase improved the carambola wine’s light transmittance, sensory color, sensory clarity and overall acceptability. Addition of 1% citric acid and 0.25% ascorbic acid to the must resulted in less dark and yellow wines with a more acceptable color. Wines fermented with the Chablis yeast strain had the highest clarity (88.55% of light transmittance). The wines were microbiologically stable. Conclusion. Carambola wine treated with 0.3% pectolase with the inclusion of 1% citric acid and 0.25% ascorbic acid with different yeast strains had (7.35 to 7.65) °Brix, (10.25 to 11.50)% alcohol, pH 3.01 to 3.02, (79.20 to 88.55)% of light transmittance and (17.50 to 17.76) mg ascorbic acid·100 mL–1. These wines had overall acceptability rating from slightly to moderately liked and they were judged as superior.

Introduction. ‘Orange Red’ is an apricot cultivar released in the United States and characterised by large fruit of very good quality for both the fresh market and processing. For this reason, this cultivar is greatly appreciated in Europe, especially in France. However, its production is erratic under Mediterranean climate conditions. Materials and methods. The influence of two rootstocks (‘Manicot’ apricot and ‘GF31’ Myrobolan plum) on the productive behaviour of ‘Orange Red’ was studied under Mediterranean conditions in Murcia (Southeast Spain). Results and discussion. ‘Orange Red’ grafted onto ‘GF31’ Myrobolan flowered slightly later than those grafted onto ‘Manicot’ apricot. However, differences in the date of ripening of fruits were small. On the other hand, the percentage of flower bud retention and levels of floral fertility were higher when ‘Orange Red’ was grafted onto ‘GF31’ than onto ‘Manicot’, resulting in higher yields and fruits with a smaller weight. The increase in flower bud retention of ‘Orange Red’ grafted onto the rootstock ‘GF31’ was the main factor responsible for the increase in yield observed with this rootstock. Conclusion. Interaction between the cultivar and rootstock is presented as an interesting strategy for cultivar adaptation to different climatic areas.
