Let T be an aperiodic automorphism of a standard probability space (X, m). We prove, that the set

is dense in L∞(X, SL(2, ℝ)).

We prove that for each ergodic automorphism T:(X, ℬ, μ)→(X, ℬ, μ) for which we can find an element S∈C(T) such that the corresponding Z2-action (S, T) on (X, ℬ, μ) is free, there exists a circle valued cocycle φ such that the group extension Tφ is ergodic but is not coalescent. In particular, the existence of such a cocycle is proved for all ergodic rigid automorphisms. As a corollary, in the class of ergodic transformations of [0,1) × [0,1) given by

for each irrational α we find φ such that Tφ is not coalescent. In some special cases the group law of the centralizer is given.

A version of pseudo-orbit tracing property for piecewise-continuous piecewise-expanding maps of the interval is proved. It is shown that the typical map of such a kind can be included in a 2m-parameter structurally stable family where m is the number of critical points.

Let be an attractor network for a dynamical system ft: M → M, indexed by the lower sets of a partially ordered set P. Our main theorem asserts the existence of a Lyapunov map ψ:M → K(P) which defines the attractor network. This result is used to prove the existence of connection matrices for discrete-time dynamical systems.

We apply Thurston's equivalence theory between dynamical systems of post-critically finite branched coverings and rational maps, to try to construct, from a pair of polynomials, a rational map. We prove that given two post-critically finite quadratic polynomials fc: z→z2+c and fc:z→ z2+c′, one can get a rational map if and only if c, c′ are not in conjugate limbs of the Mandelbrot set.

We prove that every convex polygon in ℝ2 with vertices in ℚ2 is a rotation set for some isotopic to identity homeomorphism of the two dimensional terms.

For interval maps, we define the entropy of a periodic orbit as the smallest topological entropy of a continuous interval map having this orbit. We consider the problem of computing the limit entropy of longer and longer periodic orbits with the same ‘pattern’ repeated over and over (one example of such orbits is what we call ‘snakes’). We get an answer in the form of a variational principle, where the supremum of metric entropies is taken only over those ergodic measures for which the integral of a certain function is zero. In a symmetric case, this gives a very easy method of computing this limit entropy. We briefly discuss applications to topological entropy of countable chains.

In this paper we consider certain volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on I × Tn, where I ∈ ℝ is a closed interval and Tn is an n-dimensional torus. We show that under certain non-degeneracy conditions, all of the maps sufficiently close to the integrable maps preserve a large set of n-dimensional invariant tori.

Bounded irreducible local Siegel disks include classical Siegel disks of polynomials, bounded irreducible Siegel disks of rational and entire functions, and the examples of Herman and Moeckel. We show there are only two possibilities for the structure of the boundary of such a disk: either the boundary admits a nice decomposition onto a circle or it is an indecomposable continuum.

For a 1-cocycle c on a principal r-discrete groupoid G, that vanishes only on the unit space of G, we show that the asymptotic range of c, , is an invariant for the total order c−1([0, ∞]). It follows that is also an invariant (with respect to isometric isomorphisms) of the triangular analytic algebra supported on c−1([0, ∞]). We also prove that if and only if the analytic algebra has a certain maximality property.

We consider one-parameter families of circle diffeomorphisms, f1(x) = f(x) + t(t ∈ S1), where f: S1 is a Cr-diffeomorphism (r≥3). We show that, for Lebesgue almost every t ∈ S1 the rotation number of f1, is either a rational number or an irrational number of Roth type. In the former case, f1, has periodic orbits and, in the latter case, f1, is Cr − 2-conjugate to an irrational rigid rotation from well-known theorems of Herman and Yoccoz.

For a finite Abelian group G define the two-dimensional Markov shift for all . Let μG be the Haar measure on the subgroup . The group ℤ2 acts on the measure space (XG, MG) by shifts. We prove that if G1, and G2 are p-groups and E(G1,) ≠ E(G2), where E(G) is the least common multiple of the orders of the elements of G, then the shift actions on and are not measure-theoretically isomorphic. For any finite Abelian groups G1 and G2 the shift actions on and are topologically conjugate if and only if G1 and G2 are isomorphic.

Let X be a compact Hausdorff space, f ∈ C0(X, X) and A ⊂ X a minimal set of f. We first introduce a new topological invariant, the D-function of a minimal set, by the investigation of the decomposition of the minimal set A under the action of fn, n ∈ N. Then important properties about the invariant and the existence of minimal set with a given D-function in some subshift of finite type are discussed. Finally Sharkovskii's theorem is generalized to minimal sets of continuous mappings from the interval into itself.
