Motivated by the work of Razborov about the minimal density of triangles in graphs we study the minimal density of the 5-cycle C5. We show that every graph of order n and size $ (1 - 1/k) \left( {\matrix{n \cr 2 }} \right) $, where k ≥ 3 is an integer, contains at least

Let c denote the largest constant such that every C6-free graph G contains a bipartite and C4-free subgraph having a fraction c of edges of G. Győri, Kensell and Tompkins showed that 3/8 ⩽ c ⩽ 2/5. We prove that c = 38. More generally, we show that for any ε > 0, and any integer k ⩾ 2, there is a C2k-free graph $G'$ which does not contain a bipartite subgraph of girth greater than 2k with more than a fraction

One of our proofs uses the following statement, which we prove using probabilistic ideas, generalizing a theorem of Erdős. For any ε > 0, and any integers a, b, k ⩾ 2, there exists an a-uniform hypergraph H of girth greater than k which does not contain any b-colourable subhypergraph with more than a fraction

In addition, we give a new and very short proof of a result of Kühn and Osthus, which states that every bipartite C2k-free graph G contains a C4-free subgraph with at least a fraction 1/(k−1) of the edges of G. We also answer a question of Kühn and Osthus about C2k-free graphs obtained by pasting together C2l’s (with k >l ⩾ 3).

Monotonic surfaces spanning finite regions of ℤd arise in many contexts, including DNA-based self-assembly, card-shuffling and lozenge tilings. One method that has been used to uniformly generate these surfaces is a Markov chain that iteratively adds or removes a single cube below the surface during a step. We consider a biased version of the chain, where we are more likely to add a cube than to remove it, thereby favouring surfaces that are ‘higher’ or have more cubes below it. We prove that the chain is rapidly mixing for any uniform bias in ℤ2 and for bias λ > d in ℤd when d > 2. In ℤ2 we match the optimal mixing time achieved by Benjamini, Berger, Hoffman and Mossel in the context of biased card shuffling [2], but using much simpler arguments. The proofs use a geometric distance function and a variant of path coupling in order to handle distances that can be exponentially large. We also provide the first results in the case of fluctuating bias, where the bias can vary depending on the location of the tile. We show that the chain continues to be rapidly mixing if the biases are close to uniform, but that the chain can converge exponentially slowly in the general setting.

For an integer q ⩾ 2, a graph G is called q-Ramsey for a graph H if every q-colouring of the edges of G contains a monochromatic copy of H. If G is q-Ramsey for H yet no proper subgraph of G has this property, then G is called q-Ramsey-minimal for H. Generalizing a statement by Burr, Nešetřil and Rödl from 1977, we prove that, for q ⩾ 3, if G is a graph that is not q-Ramsey for some graph H, then G is contained as an induced subgraph in an infinite number of q-Ramsey-minimal graphs for H as long as H is 3-connected or isomorphic to the triangle. For such H, the following are some consequences.

• For 2 ⩽ r < q, every r-Ramsey-minimal graph for H is contained as an induced subgraph in an infinite number of q-Ramsey-minimal graphs for H.

• For every q ⩾ 3, there are q-Ramsey-minimal graphs for H of arbitrarily large maximum degree, genus and chromatic number.

• The collection $\{\mathcal M_q(H) \colon H \text{ is 3-connected or } K_3\}$ forms an antichain with respect to the subset relation, where $\mathcal M_q(H)$ denotes the set of all graphs that are q-Ramsey-minimal for H.

We also address the question of which pairs of graphs satisfy $\mathcal M_q(H_1)=\mathcal M_q(H_2)$ , in which case H1 and H2 are called q-equivalent. We show that two graphs H1 and H2 are q-equivalent for even q if they are 2-equivalent, and that in general q-equivalence for some q ⩾ 3 does not necessarily imply 2-equivalence. Finally we indicate that for connected graphs this implication may hold: results by Nešetřil and Rödl and by Fox, Grinshpun, Liebenau, Person and Szabó imply that the complete graph is not 2-equivalent to any other connected graph. We prove that this is the case for an arbitrary number of colours.

Let $\{D_M\}_{M\geq 0}$ be the n-vertex random directed graph process, where $D_0$ is the empty directed graph on n vertices, and subsequent directed graphs in the sequence are obtained by the addition of a new directed edge uniformly at random. For each $$\varepsilon > 0$$ , we show that, almost surely, any directed graph $D_M$ with minimum in- and out-degree at least 1 is not only Hamiltonian (as shown by Frieze), but remains Hamiltonian when edges are removed, as long as at most $1/2-\varepsilon$ of both the in- and out-edges incident to each vertex are removed. We say such a directed graph is $(1/2-\varepsilon)$ -resiliently Hamiltonian. Furthermore, for each $\varepsilon > 0$ , we show that, almost surely, each directed graph $D_M$ in the sequence is not $(1/2+\varepsilon)$ -resiliently Hamiltonian.

This improves a result of Ferber, Nenadov, Noever, Peter and Škorić who showed, for each $\varepsilon > 0$ , that the binomial random directed graph $D(n,p)$ is almost surely $(1/2-\varepsilon)$ -resiliently Hamiltonian if $p=\omega(\log^8n/n)$ .

The Hamming graph H(d, n) is the Cartesian product of d complete graphs on n vertices. Let ${m=d(n-1)}$ be the degree and $V = n^d$ be the number of vertices of H(d, n). We consider the behaviour of minimax recursions defined on random trees. Such recursions give the value of a general class of two-player combinatorial games. We examine in particular the case where the tree is given by a Galton–Watson branching process, truncated at some depth 2n, and the terminal values of the level 2n nodes are drawn independently from some common distribution. The case of a regular tree was previously considered by Pearl, who showed that as n → ∞ the value of the game converges to a constant, and by Ali Khan, Devroye and Neininger, who obtained a distributional limit under a suitable rescaling.

For a general offspring distribution, there is a surprisingly rich variety of behaviour: the (unrescaled) value of the game may converge to a constant, or to a discrete limit with several atoms, or to a continuous distribution. We also give distributional limits under suitable rescalings in various cases.

We also address questions of endogeny. Suppose the game is played on a tree with many levels, so that the terminal values are far from the root. To be confident of playing a good first move, do we need to see the whole tree and its terminal values, or can we play close to optimally by inspecting just the first few levels of the tree? The answers again depend in an interesting way on the offspring distribution.

We also mention several open questions.

In this paper we propose a polynomial-time deterministic algorithm for approximately counting the k-colourings of the random graph G(n, d/n), for constant d>0. In particular, our algorithm computes in polynomial time a $(1\pm n^{-\Omega(1)})$ -approximation of the so-called ‘free energy’ of the k-colourings of G(n, d/n), for $k\geq (1+\varepsilon) d$ with probability $1-o(1)$ over the graph instances.

Our algorithm uses spatial correlation decay to compute numerically estimates of marginals of the Gibbs distribution. Spatial correlation decay has been used in different counting schemes for deterministic counting. So far algorithms have exploited a certain kind of set-to-point correlation decay, e.g. the so-called Gibbs uniqueness. Here we deviate from this setting and exploit a point-to-point correlation decay. The spatial mixing requirement is that for a pair of vertices the correlation between their corresponding configurations becomes weaker with their distance.

Furthermore, our approach generalizes in that it allows us to compute the Gibbs marginals for small sets of nearby vertices. Also, we establish a connection between the fluctuations of the number of colourings of G(n, d/n) and the fluctuations of the number of short cycles and edges in the graph.

Akbari and Alipour [1] conjectured that any Latin array of order n with at least n2/2 symbols contains a transversal. For large n, we confirm this conjecture, and moreover, we show that n399/200 symbols suffice.

A classical result of Erdős and, independently, of Bondy and Simonovits [3] says that the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex graph not containing C2k, the cycle of length 2k, is O(n1+1/k). Simonovits established a corresponding supersaturation result for C2k’s, showing that there exist positive constants C,c depending only on k such that every n-vertex graph G with e(G)⩾ Cn1+1/k contains at least c(e(G)/v(G))2k copies of C2k, this number of copies tightly achieved by the random graph (up to a multiplicative constant).

In this paper we extend Simonovits' result to a supersaturation result of r-uniform linear cycles of even length in r-uniform linear hypergraphs. Our proof is self-contained and includes the r = 2 case. As an auxiliary tool, we develop a reduction lemma from general host graphs to almost-regular host graphs that can be used for other supersaturation problems, and may therefore be of independent interest.

The hedgehog Ht is a 3-uniform hypergraph on vertices $1, \ldots ,t + \left({\matrix{t \cr 2}}\right)$ such that, for any pair (i, j) with 1 ≤ i < j ≤ t, there exists a unique vertex k > t such that {i, j, k} is an edge. Conlon, Fox and Rödl proved that the two-colour Ramsey number of the hedgehog grows polynomially in the number of its vertices, while the four-colour Ramsey number grows exponentially in the square root of the number of vertices. They asked whether the two-colour Ramsey number of the hedgehog Ht is nearly linear in the number of its vertices. We answer this question affirmatively, proving that r(Ht) = O(t2 ln t).

The Brownian separable permuton is a random probability measure on the unit square, which was introduced by Bassino, Bouvel, Féray, Gerin and Pierrot (2016) as the scaling limit of the diagram of the uniform separable permutation as size grows to infinity. We show that, almost surely, the permuton is the pushforward of the Lebesgue measure on the graph of a random measure-preserving function associated to a Brownian excursion whose strict local minima are decorated with independent and identically distributed signs. As a consequence, its support is almost surely totally disconnected, has Hausdorff dimension one, and enjoys self-similarity properties inherited from those of the Brownian excursion. The density function of the averaged permuton is computed and a connection with the shuffling of the Brownian continuum random tree is explored.

We study random unlabelled k-trees by combining the colouring approach by Gainer-Dewar and Gessel (2014) with the cycle-pointing method by Bodirsky, Fusy, Kang and Vigerske (2011). Our main applications are Gromov–Hausdorff–Prokhorov and Benjamini–Schramm limits that describe their asymptotic geometric shape on a global and local scale as the number of (k + 1)-cliques tends to infinity.

We give an example of a long range Bernoulli percolation process on a group non-quasi-isometric with ℤ, in which clusters are almost surely finite for all values of the parameter. This random graph admits diverse equivalent definitions, and we study their ramifications. We also study its expected size and point out certain phase transitions.

For fixed graphs F1,…,Fr, we prove an upper bound on the threshold function for the property that G(n, p) → (F1,…,Fr). This establishes the 1-statement of a conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter.

We show that a nearly square independent and identically distributed random integral matrix is surjective over the integral lattice with very high probability. This answers a question by Koplewitz [6]. Our result extends to sparse matrices as well as to matrices of dependent entries.

There has been substantial interest in estimating the value of a graph parameter, i.e. of a real-valued function defined on the set of finite graphs, by querying a randomly sampled substructure whose size is independent of the size of the input. Graph parameters that may be successfully estimated in this way are said to be testable or estimable, and the sample complexity qz = qz(ε) of an estimable parameter z is the size of a random sample of a graph G required to ensure that the value of z(G) may be estimated within an error of ε with probability at least 2/3. In this paper, for any fixed monotone graph property $\mathcal{P}= \text{Forb}\!(\mathcal{F}),$ we study the sample complexity of estimating a bounded graph parameter z that, for an input graph G, counts the number of spanning subgraphs of G that satisfy$\mathcal{P}$. To improve upon previous upper bounds on the sample complexity, we show that the vertex set of any graph that satisfies a monotone property $\mathcal{P}$ may be partitioned equitably into a constant number of classes in such a way that the cluster graph induced by the partition is not far from satisfying a natural weighted graph generalization of $\mathcal{P}$. Properties for which this holds are said to be recoverable, and the study of recoverable properties may be of independent interest.

Given graphs G and H, a family of vertex-disjoint copies of H in G is called an H-tiling. Conlon, Gowers, Samotij and Schacht showed that for a given graph H and a constant γ>0, there exists C>0 such that if $p \ge C{n^{ - 1/{m_2}(H)}}$ , then asymptotically almost surely every spanning subgraph G of the random graph 𝒢(n, p) with minimum degree at least

A well-known observation of Lovász is that if a hypergraph is not 2-colourable, then at least one pair of its edges intersect at a single vertex. In this short paper we consider the quantitative version of Lovász’s criterion. That is, we ask how many pairs of edges intersecting at a single vertex should belong to a non-2-colourable n-uniform hypergraph. Our main result is an exact answer to this question, which further characterizes all the extremal hypergraphs. The proof combines Bollobás’s two families theorem with Pluhar’s randomized colouring algorithm.

Several discrete geometry problems are equivalent to estimating the size of the largest homogeneous sets in graphs that happen to be the union of few comparability graphs. An important observation for such results is that if G is an n-vertex graph that is the union of r comparability (or more generally, perfect) graphs, then either G or its complement contains a clique of size $n^{1/(r+1)}$ .

This bound is known to be tight for $r=1$ . The question whether it is optimal for $r\ge 2$ was studied by Dumitrescu and Tóth. We prove that it is essentially best possible for $r=2$ , as well: we introduce a probabilistic construction of two comparability graphs on n vertices, whose union contains no clique or independent set of size $n^{1/3+o(1)}$ .

Using similar ideas, we can also construct a graph G that is the union of r comparability graphs, and neither G nor its complement contain a complete bipartite graph with parts of size $cn/{(log n)^r}$ . With this, we improve a result of Fox and Pach.
