We study a model motivated by the minesweeper game. In this model one starts with the percolation of mines on the lattice ℤd, and then tries to find an infinite path of mine-free sites. At every recovery of a free site, the player is given some information on the sites adjacent to the current site. We compare the parameter values for which there exists a strategy such that the process survives to the critical parameter of ordinary percolation. We then derive improved bounds for these values for the same process, when the player has some complexity restrictions in computing his moves. Finally, we discuss some monotonicity issues which arise naturally for this model.

For an integer q ⩾ 2 and an even integer d, consider the graph obtained from a large complete q-ary tree by connecting with an edge any two vertices at distance exactly d in the tree. This graph has clique number q + 1, and the purpose of this short note is to prove that its chromatic number is Θ((d log q)/log d). It was not known that the chromatic number of this graph grows with d. As a simple corollary of our result, we give a negative answer to a problem of van den Heuvel and Naserasr, asking whether there is a constant C such that for any odd integer d, any planar graph can be coloured with at most C colours such that any pair of vertices at distance exactly d have distinct colours. Finally, we study interval colouring of trees (where vertices at distance at least d and at most cd, for some real c > 1, must be assigned distinct colours), giving a sharp upper bound in the case of bounded degree trees.

Given m positive integers R = (ri), n positive integers C = (cj) such that Σri = Σcj = N, and mn non-negative weights W=(wij), we consider the total weight T=T(R, C; W) of non-negative integer matrices D=(dij) with the row sums ri, column sums cj, and the weight of D equal to . For different choices of R, C, and W, the quantity T(R,C; W) specializes to the permanent of a matrix, the number of contingency tables with prescribed margins, and the number of integer feasible flows in a network. We present a randomized algorithm whose complexity is polynomial in N and which computes a number T′=T′(R,C;W) such that T′ ≤ T ≤ α(R,C)T′ where . In many cases, ln T′ provides an asymptotically accurate estimate of ln T. The idea of the algorithm is to express T as the expectation of the permanent of an N × N random matrix with exponentially distributed entries and approximate the expectation by the integral T′ of an efficiently computable log-concave function on ℝmn.

We solve Conway's Angel Problem by showing that the Angel of power 2 has a winning strategy.

An old observation of Conway is that we may suppose without loss of generality that the Angel never jumps to a square where he could have already landed at a previous time. We turn this observation around and prove that we may suppose without loss of generality that the Devil never eats a square where the Angel could have already jumped. Then we give a simple winning strategy for the Angel.

As a strengthening of Hadwiger’s conjecture, Gerards and Seymour conjectured that every graph with no odd Kt minor is (t − 1)-colourable. We prove two weaker variants of this conjecture. Firstly, we show that for each t ⩾ 2, every graph with no odd Kt minor has a partition of its vertex set into 6t − 9 sets V1, …, V6t−9 such that each Vi induces a subgraph of bounded maximum degree. Secondly, we prove that for each t ⩾ 2, every graph with no odd Kt minor has a partition of its vertex set into 10t −13 sets V1,…, V10t−13 such that each Vi induces a subgraph with components of bounded size. The second theorem improves a result of Kawarabayashi (2008), which states that the vertex set can be partitioned into 496t such sets.

In this paper, we investigate the limit law of the inertial moment of Dyck paths with respect to the $x$-axis, that is, the sum of the squares of the altitudes. We find its Laplace transform using Louchard's methodology, rediscovering a result which was in fact well known by probabilists. We give recurrence relations which enable us to compute the moments of the joint limit law of the area and the inertial moments of both Dyck paths and Grand Dyck paths (bilateral Dyck paths).

The hexagonal lattice site percolation critical probability is shown to be at most 0.79472, improving the best previous mathematically rigorous upper bound. The bound is derived by using the substitution method to compare the site model with the bond model, the latter of which is exactly solved. Shortcuts which eliminate a substantial amount of computation make the derivation of the bound possible.

Simple families of increasing trees were introduced by Bergeron, Flajolet and Salvy. They include random binary search trees, random recursive trees and random plane-oriented recursive trees (PORTs) as important special cases. In this paper, we investigate the number of subtrees of size k on the fringe of some classes of increasing trees, namely generalized PORTs and d-ary increasing trees. We use a complex-analytic method to derive precise expansions of mean value and variance as well as a central limit theorem for fixed k. Moreover, we propose an elementary approach to derive limit laws when k is growing with n. Our results have consequences for the occurrence of pattern sizes on the fringe of increasing trees.

Let G1 × G2 denote the strong product of graphs G1 and G2, that is, the graph on V(G1) × V(G2) in which (u1, u2) and (v1, v2) are adjacent if for each i = 1, 2 we have ui = vi or uivi ∈ E(Gi). The Shannon capacity of G is c(G) = limn → ∞ α(Gn)1/n, where Gn denotes the n-fold strong power of G, and α(H) denotes the independence number of a graph H. The normalized Shannon capacity of G is

Thomassen [6] conjectured that if I is a set of k−1 arcs in a k-strong tournament T, then T−I has a Hamiltonian cycle. This conjecture was proved by Fraisse and Thomassen [3]. We prove the following stronger result. Let T=(V, A) be a k-strong tournament on n vertices and let X1, X2, [ctdot ], Xl be a partition of the vertex set V of T such that [mid ]X1[mid ][les ][mid ]X2[mid ] [les ][ctdot ][les ][mid ]Xl[mid ]. If k[ges ][sum ] l−1i=1[lfloor ] [mid ]Xi[mid ]/2[rfloor ]+[mid ]Xl[mid ], then T−∪li=1 {xy∈A[ratio ]x, y∈Xi} has a Hamiltonian cycle. The bound on k is sharp.

Let p1, p2, p3 be three noncollinear points in the plane, and let P be a set of n other points in the plane. We show that the number of distinct distances between p1, p2, p3 and the points of P is Ω(n6/11), improving the lower bound Ω(n0.502) of Elekes and Szabó [4] (and considerably simplifying the analysis).

It is proved that the median eigenvalues of every connected bipartite graph G of maximum degree at most three belong to the interval [−1, 1] with a single exception of the Heawood graph, whose median eigenvalues are $\pm\sqrt{2}$. Moreover, if G is not isomorphic to the Heawood graph, then a positive fraction of its median eigenvalues lie in the interval [−1, 1]. This surprising result has been motivated by the problem about HOMO-LUMO separation that arises in mathematical chemistry.

In a random passive intersection graph model the edges of the graph are decided by taking the union of a fixed number of cliques of random size. We give conditions for a random passive intersection graph model to have a limiting vertex degree distribution, in particular to have a Poisson limiting vertex degree distribution. We give related conditions which, in addition to implying a limiting vertex degree distribution, imply convergence of expectation.

A family of subsets of {1,. . .,n} is called intersecting if any two of its sets intersect. A classical result in extremal combinatorics due to Erdős, Ko and Rado determines the maximum size of an intersecting family of k-subsets of {1,. . .,n}. In this paper we study the following problem: How many intersecting families of k-subsets of {1,. . .,n} are there? Improving a result of Balogh, Das, Delcourt, Liu and Sharifzadeh, we determine this quantity asymptotically for n ≥ 2k+2+2$\sqrt{k\log k}$ and k → ∞. Moreover, under the same assumptions we also determine asymptotically the number of non-trivial intersecting families, that is, intersecting families for which the intersection of all sets is empty. We obtain analogous results for pairs of cross-intersecting families.

Let HG mean that every s-colouring of E(H) produces a monochromatic copy of G in some colour class. Let the s-colour degree Ramsey number of a graph G, written RΔ(G; s), be min{Δ(H): HG}. If T is a tree in which one vertex has degree at most k and all others have degree at most ⌈k/2⌉, then RΔ(T; s) = s(k − 1) + ϵ, where ϵ = 1 when k is odd and ϵ = 0 when k is even. For general trees, RΔ(T; s) ≤ 2s(Δ(T) − 1).

To study sharpness of the upper bound, consider the double-starSa,b, the tree whose two non-leaf vertices have degrees a and b. If a ≤ b, then RΔ(Sa,b; 2) is 2b − 2 when a < b and b is even; it is 2b − 1 otherwise. If s is fixed and at least 3, then RΔ(Sb,b;s) = f(s)(b − 1) − o(b), where f(s) = 2s − 3.5 − O(s−1).

We prove several results about edge-colourings of bounded-degree graphs that are related to degree Ramsey numbers of paths. Finally, for cycles we show that RΔ(C2k + 1; s) ≥ 2s + 1, that RΔ(C2k; s) ≥ 2s, and that RΔ(C4;2) = 5. For the latter we prove the stronger statement that every graph with maximum degree at most 4 has a 2-edge-colouring such that the subgraph in each colour class has girth at least 5.

In this paper we prove that two local conditions involving the degrees and co-degrees in a graph can be used to determine whether a given vertex partition is Frieze–Kannan regular. With a more refined version of these two local conditions we provide a deterministic algorithm that obtains a Frieze–Kannan regular partition of any graph G in time O(|V(G)|2).

For positive integers n and q and a monotone graph property $\mathcal{A}$ , we consider the two-player, perfect information game WC(n, q, $\mathcal{A}$ ), which is defined as follows. The game proceeds in rounds. In each round, the first player, called Waiter, offers the second player, called Client, q + 1 edges of the complete graph Kn which have not been offered previously. Client then chooses one of these edges which he keeps and the remaining q edges go back to Waiter. If, at the end of the game, the graph which consists of the edges chosen by Client satisfies the property $\mathcal{A}$ , then Waiter is declared the winner; otherwise Client wins the game. In this paper we study such games (also known as Picker–Chooser games) for a variety of natural graph-theoretic parameters, such as the size of a largest component or the length of a longest cycle. In particular, we describe a phase transition type phenomenon which occurs when the parameter q is close to n and is reminiscent of phase transition phenomena in random graphs. Namely, we prove that if q ⩾ (1 + ϵ)n, then Client can avoid components of order cϵ−2 ln n for some absolute constant c > 0, whereas for q ⩽ (1 − ϵ)n, Waiter can force a giant, linearly sized component in Client's graph. In the second part of the paper, we prove that Waiter can force Client's graph to be pancyclic for every q ⩽ cn, where c > 0 is an appropriate constant. Note that this behaviour is in stark contrast to the threshold for pancyclicity and Hamiltonicity of random graphs.

The discrete Green's function (without boundary) $\mathbb{G}$ is a pseudo-inverse of the combinatorial Laplace operator of a graph G = (V, E). We reveal the intimate connection between Green's function and the theory of exact stopping rules for random walks on graphs. We give an elementary formula for Green's function in terms of state-to-state hitting times of the underlying graph. Namely,$\mathbb{G}(i,j) = \pi_j \bigl( H(\pi,j) - H(i,j) \bigr),$ where πi is the stationary distribution at vertex i, H(i, j) is the expected hitting time for a random walk starting from vertex i to first reach vertex j, and H(π, j) = ∑k∈V πkH(k, j). This formula also holds for the digraph Laplace operator.

The most important characteristics of a stopping rule are its exit frequencies, which are the expected number of exits of a given vertex before the rule halts the walk. We show that Green's function is, in fact, a matrix of exit frequencies plus a rank one matrix. In the undirected case, we derive spectral formulas for Green's function and for some mixing measures arising from stopping rules. Finally, we further explore the exit frequency matrix point of view, and discuss a natural generalization of Green's function for any distribution τ defined on the vertex set of the graph.

The main result of this paper gives a structure of a triangle-free graph of order n with minimal degree greater than 10n/29. This extends results given by Andrásfai et al. [1] and Häggkvist [6].

The structure of non-Hamiltonian graphs is studied in terms of neighbourhood-unions. Numerous results, such as (A), (B) and (C) below, are obtained.
