In October 1970 the South Oxfordshire Hunt was crossing a field on Little Baldon Farm when one of their number observed some sherds lying on the newly ploughed surface. One of the first pieces to be recovered was a fine example of a moulded face from the neck of a flagon (No. I, below). Further investigation revealed much Romano-British pottery turned up by deep ploughing, and M. Aston and C. Young reported: ‘Fragments of mortaria, red colourcoated pottery and kiln debris indicate the site of workshops and perhaps 8 or 9 kilns.’ The site is in Toot Baldon parish, Oxfordshire, and towards the southern end of the Oxford potteries.

A fragment of a large building inscription was found in the courtyard of the principia at Ribchester in 1908 (RIB 591). It is restored: [Imp. Caes….]│Avg. [et … ]│Avg. [et …]│ Cafesari … vexillatio legionis sextae Vict]│ric[is … leg.]│Av[gg ….]. The repeated Avg. and the erased Ca in line 4 show that it was set up in 198–209.

In his fair and constructive review of The Imperial Cult in the Latin West, Vol. i (1987), S.R.F. Price is in general agreement with the proposed development of provincial cults in the Latin West – with one exception. He has misgivings about the thesis that the temple at Colchester was only to Divus Claudius and at no stage to Claudius in his lifetime. Two points are raised. The first concerns the text of Seneca, Apocolocyntosis vm. 3: ‘deus fieri vult: parum est quod templum in Britannia habet, quod <hunc> nunc barbari colunt et utdeum orant Price writes, The dramatic context of this remark, by Jupiter, is before the debate in the Olympian senate about the admission of the late Claudius. As the Olympian debate is a parody of the debate in the Roman senate, it is implausible to argue that the Apocolocyntosis passage could refer to a temple authorized by the senate after Claudius' death.'

In an article published in Britannia in 1980, Reinhard Stupperich argued for the dominance of classical iconography in the mosaic pavements of fourth-century Britain and showed how a number of pavements had previously been misinterpreted. Among the scenes which he examined, at least three which had appeared anomalous to earlier interpreters were shown to fit more or less within standard iconographic formulae: a scene from East Coker showing Dionysus and Ariadne, and panels from Keynsham representing Athena playing the flutes and Achilles discovered on Skyros. The difficulties which they had caused were due to lack of skill or understanding on the part of the craftsman who produced them, to the imperfect state of their preservation, or (where destroyed) to the unreliability of the modern draftsman to whose record we owe our knowledge of them.

Restormel fort is a small square, bivallate earthwork located on a spur above the River Fowey in Cornwall. In 2007 a geophysical survey was carried out which showed very clearly that the site was in fact a Roman fort and closely similar in size and in the position of its entrances to Nanstallon, until then the only known Roman fort in Cornwall. The position of these two forts has prompted speculation that they were located strategically to control movement both north–south along the rivers and east–west overland along the central Cornwall ridgeway. The proximity of both sites to significant deposits of metals suggests that the role of the forts may also be linked to the Roman interest in minerals.
