The classical dynamics of non-relativistic particles are described by the Schrödinger wave equation, perturbed by quantum potential nonlinearity. Quantization of this dispersionless equation, implemented by deformation of the potential strength, recovers the standard Schrödinger equation. In addition, the classically forbidden region corresponds to the Planck constant analytically continued to pure imaginary values. We apply the same procedure to the NLS and DNLS equations, constructing first the corresponding dispersionless limits and then adding quantum deformations. All these deformations admit the Lax representation as well as the Hirota bilinear form. In the classically forbidden region we find soliton resonances and black hole phenomena. For deformed DNLS the chiral solitons with single event horizon and resonance dynamics are constructed.

A canonical form of the self-adjoint Matrix Riccati Differential Equation with constant coefficients is obtained in terms of extremal solutions of the self-adjoint Matrix Riccati Algebraic (steady-state) Equations. This form is exploited in order to obtain a convenient explicit solution of the transient problem. Estimates of the convergence rate to the steady state are derived.

In this paper we investigate the boundedness and asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of a class of homogeneous second-order difference equations with a single non-constant coefficient. These equations model, for example, the amplitude of oscillation of the weights on a discretely weighted vibrating string. We present several growth theorems. Two examples are also given.

A formal framework is constructed for the comparison of different stabilization techniques, such as Wiener filtering, regularization, Courant's method and Landweber–Strand iterations, for the solution of first kind integral equations. It is shown that, when they are applied to convolution equations, all these methods can be reinterpreted as Wiener filters. This equivalence is then used to derive some specific results about regularization, Courant's method and Landweber–Strand iteration.

After formulating the alternate potential principle for the nonlinear differential equation corresponding to the generalised Emden-Fowler equation, the invariance identities of Rund [14] involving the Lagrangian and the generators of the infinitesimal Lie group are used for writing down the first integrals of the said equation via the Noether theorem. Further, for physical realisable forms of the parameters involved and through repeated application of invariance under the transformation obtained, a number of exact solutions are arrived at both for the Emden-Fowler equation and classical Emden equations. A comparative study with Bluman-Cole and scale-invariant techniques reveals quite a number of remarkable features of the techniques used here.

This paper concerns with analytical integration of trivariate polynomials over linear polyhedra in Euclidean three-dimensional space. The volume integration of trivariate polynomials over linear polyhedra is computed as sum of surface integrals in R3 on application of the well known Gauss's divergence theorem and by using triangulation of the linear polyhedral boundary. The surface integrals in R3 over an arbitrary triangle are connected to surface integrals of bivariate polynomials in R2. The surface integrals in R2 over a simple polygon or over an arbitrary triangle are computed by two different approaches. The first algorithm is obtained by transforming the surface integrals in R2 into a sum of line integrals in a one-parameter space, while the second algorithm is obtained by transforming the surface integrals in R2 over an arbitrary triangle into a parametric double integral over a unit triangle. It is shown that the volume integration of trivariate polynomials over linear polyhedra can be obtained as a sum of surface integrals of bivariate polynomials in R2. The computation of surface integrals is proposed in the beginning of this paper and these are contained in Lemmas 1–6. These algorithms (Lemmas 1–6) and the theorem on volume integration are then followed by an example for which the detailed computational scheme has been explained. The symbolic integration formulas presented in this paper may lead to an easy and systematic incorporation of global properties of solid objects, for example, the volume, centre of mass, moments of inertia etc., required in engineering design processes.

Conformal slit maps play a fundamental theoretical role in analytic function theory and potential theory. A lesser-known fact is that they also have a key role to play in applied mathematics. This review article discusses several canonical conformal slit maps for multiply connected domains and gives explicit formulae for them in terms of a classical special function known as the Schottky–Klein prime function associated with a circular preimage domain. It is shown, by a series of examples, that these slit mapping functions can be used as basic building blocks to construct more complicated functions relevant to a variety of applied mathematical problems.

John Henry Michell (1863–1940) published scientific papers only between 1890 and 1902, but included in his 23 papers from that short but productive period are some of the most important contributions ever made by an Australian mathematician. In this article I shall concentrate on the extraordinary 1898 paper “The wave resistance of a ship” Phil. Mag.(5) 45, 106–123. There are many reasons why this paper was an astounding achievement, but perhaps the most remarkable is that the resulting formula has not been improved upon to this day. In the computer age, many efforts have been made to do so, but with little success so far. The formula itself involves a triple integral of an integrand constructed from the offset data for the ship's hull, and even the task of evaluating this triple integral is not a trivial one on today's computers; another reason for admiration of Michell's own heroic hand-calculated numerical work in the 1890's. Lack of a routine algorithm for Michell's integral has inhibited its use by naval architects and ship hydrodynamic laboratories, and there has been a tendency for it to receive a bad press based on unfair comparisons, e.g. comparison of model experiments (themselves often suspect) with inaccurate computations or computations for the wrong hull, etc. The original integral is in fact quite reasonable as an engineering tool, and some new results confirming this are shown. Improvement beyond Michell is however needed in some important speed ranges, and indications are given of recent approaches that may be promising.

Finding the intersection of $n$-dimensional spheres in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ is an interesting problem with applications in trilateration, global positioning systems, multidimensional scaling and distance geometry. In this paper, we generalize some known results on finding the intersection of spheres, based on QR decomposition. Our main result describes the intersection of any number of $n$-dimensional spheres without the assumption that the centres of the spheres are affinely independent. A possible application in the interval distance geometry problem is also briefly discussed.

We propose a new adaptive and composite Barzilai–Borwein (BB) step size by integrating the advantages of such existing step sizes. Particularly, the proposed step size is an optimal weighted mean of two classical BB step sizes and the weights are updated at each iteration in accordance with the quality of the classical BB step sizes. Combined with the steepest descent direction, the adaptive and composite BB step size is incorporated into the development of an algorithm such that it is efficient to solve large-scale optimization problems. We prove that the developed algorithm is globally convergent and it R-linearly converges when applied to solve strictly convex quadratic minimization problems. Compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms available in the literature, the proposed step size is more efficient in solving ill-posed or large-scale benchmark test problems.

Centre manifolds arise in a rational approach to the problem of forming low-dimensional models of dynamical systems with many degrees of freedom. When a dynamical system with a centre manifold is subject to a small forcing, F, there are two effects: to displace the centre manifold; and to alter the evolution thereon. We propose a formal scheme for calculating the centre manifold of such a forced dynamical system. Our formalism permits the calculation of these effects, with errors of order |F|2. We find that the displacement of the manifold allows a reparameterisation of its description, and we describe two “natural” ways in which this can be carried out. We give three examples: an introductory example; a five-mode model of the atmosphere to display the quasi-geostrophic approximation; and the forced Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation.

It is well known that spectral methods (tau, Galerkin, collocation) have a condition number of O(N4) where N is the number of retained modes of polynomial approximations. This paper presents some efficient spectral algorithms, which have a condition number of O(N2), based on the ultraspherical-Galerkin methods for the integrated forms of second-order elliptic equations in one and two space variables. The key to the efficiency of these algorithms is to construct appropriate base functions, which lead to systems with specially structured matrices that can be efficiently inverted. The complexities of the algorithms are a small multiple of Nd+1 operations for a d-dimensional domain with (N – 1)d unknowns, while the convergence rates of the algorithms are exponentials with smooth solutions.

Finite difference schemes for some two point boundary value problems are analysed. It is found that for schemes defined on nonuniform grids, the order of the local truncation error does not fully reflect the rate of convergence of the numerical approximation obtained. Numerical results are presented that indicate that this is also the case for higher dimensional problems.

This paper studies outflow of a light fluid from a point source, starting from an initially spherical bubble. This region of light fluid is embedded in a heavy fluid, from which it is separated by a thin interface. A gravitational force directed radially inward toward the mass source is permitted. Because the light inner fluid is pushing the heavy outer fluid, the interface between them may be unstable to small perturbations, in the Rayleigh–Taylor sense. An inviscid model of this two-layer flow is presented, and a linearized solution is developed for early times. It is argued that the inviscid solution develops a point of infinite curvature at the interface within finite time, after which the solution fails to exist. A Boussinesq viscous model is then presented as a means of quantifying the precise effects of viscosity. The interface is represented as a narrow region of large density gradient. The viscous results agree well with the inviscid theory at early times, but the curvature singularity of the inviscid theory is instead replaced by jet formation in the viscous case. This may be of relevance to underwater explosions and stellar evolution.

This is an expository paper in which we present an introduction to a variational approach to spline interpolation. We present a sequence of theorems which starts with Holladay's classical result concerning natural cubic splines and culminates in some general abstract results.

A correspondence is established between flows of air above stationary water, and flows of water below air at atmospheric pressure. Flows in the latter category are well studied, and all such hydrodynamic flows can be “turned upside-down” to generate flows of air in which the free surface deforms under gravity, due to a balance between aerodynamic and hydrostatic pressures. Examples are given of some exact inverse solutions, and a general semi-inverse approach is outlined for numerical solutions via an integral formulation.

The Bonhoeffer Van der Pol system is a planar autonomous nonlinear system of differential equations which has been invoked as a qualitative model of physiological states in a nerve membrane. It contains three independent parameters and previous work has only studied a small portion of the parameter space, that part which is thought to be of physiological relevance. Here we give a complete study of the full parameter space, using both theoretical results and numerical solutions.

By a systematic search for Lie-Bäetcklund symmetries, a class of linearisable reaction-diffusion equations is obtained that has, as a canonical form, ut = u2uxx + 2u2. One such nonlinear equation is θt = ∂x[a(b - θ)-2 θx] - ma(b -θ)-2 θx - q exp(-mx). This represents an extension of Fokas-Yortsos-Rosen equation (q = 0) to incorporate a reaction term. It is relevant to the modelling of unsaturated flow in a soil with a volumetric extraction mechanism, such as a web of plant roots. Here, a reciprocal transformation is used to solve a nonlinear boundary-value problem for transient flow into a finite layer of a soil subject to a constant flux boundary condition to compensate for such water extraction.

Integral equations on the half line are commonly approximated by the finite-section approximation, in which the infinite upper limit is replaced by a positive number β. A novel technique is used here to rederive a number of classical results on the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the Wiener-Hopf and related equations, and is then extended to obtain existence, uniqueness and convergence results for the corresponding finite-section equations. Unlike the methods used in the recent work of Anselone and Sloan, the present methods are constructive, and result in explicit asymptotic bounds for the error introduced by the finite-section approximation.
