So much has been written about the Beauchamp Chapel that it is impossible to give any description without repeating more or less well-known facts, but with the exception of the glass, which in part was dealt with very fully by Dr. Hardy in 1909, writers have been content to generalize with regard to its detail; though J. G. Waller, writing on Christian Iconography in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1850 and 1851, used figures from the mullions of the east window to illustrate his subject.

This curious and perfect Roman fibula, which I have the honour to send to you by my friend Mr. Lort for your inspection, was found at no great distance from Rome, about the year 1770, at a place called Rocca Priore, between Frescati and Palestrina, by a peasant, who sold it, together with some coins, to my friend Mr. Kerrich, fellow of Magdalen college, Cambridge, from whom I received it very lately.

The journalist, after stating the motives which induced him to visit the island of Elephanta, the preparations made for his excursion, the persons who accompanied him, and the precautions taken for their safety against the incursion of Caun Ainge Angery who often plundered the island, mentions his landing on the S. E. side thereof. The island takes its name from an elephant in stone. (plate XXI. fig. 1.) with another on its back which stands on a small hill and serves as a sea mark, but no tradition remains of the persons who formed or caused the rock to be formed into this shape. As they advanced towards the pagoda through a smooth narrow pass cut put of the rock, they observed another hewn figure which was called Alexander's horse (plate XXI. fig. 2.) though why so named they could not learn.

King Edward the Confessor had a royal palace at Brill, or Brehul, in Bucks, to which he often retired, for the pleasure of hunting in his forest of Bernwood. This forest, it is said, was much infested by a wild boar, which was at last slain by one Nigel, a huntsman, who presented the boar's head to the king; and for a reward the king gave to him one hyde of arable land, called Derehyde, and a wood called Hulewode, with the custody of the forest of Bernwood, to hold to him and his heirs per unum cornu, quod est charta praedictae forestae. Upon this ground Nigel built a lodge or mansion house, called Borestall, in memory of the slain boar. For proof of this, in a large folio vellum book, containing transcripts of charters and evidences relating to this estate (supposed to have been written in or before the reign of Henry the Sixth), is a rude delineation of the site of Borstal house and manor, and under it the figure of a man presenting on his knees to the king the head of a boar on the point of a sword, and the king returning to him a coat of arms, Arg. a fess G. between two crescents, and a horn Vert, as represented in Plate I. No 2.

I have the honor of returning to you the Roll of Egyptian Papyrus, belonging to the Society of Antiquaries; which I have succeeded, not without some difficulty, in unrolling in its whole extent. The circumstance of its having been for some months in salt water occasioned the folds, in many parts of it, to adhere so closely together, that they could only be separated by dipping in boiling water.

As every circumstance relating either to British or Roman Antiquities must be interesting to your Society, I beg leave to transmit to you some account of four Mosaic Pavements discovered in the county of Hants, and which, I believe, have not yet been described in the Archæologia.

I beg leave, through your assistance, to call the attention of the Society of Antiquaries to an interesting Roman remain which I lately noticed whilst tracing the line of Antonine's Vallum from Bowness to Old Kilpatrick.

When I had the pleasure of seeing you at Rose Castle, I mentioned my having discovered some singular sepulchres of the ancient Britons ; and if you think the following account of them is worthy of being laid before the Society, I shall take the liberty of troubling you to present it.

Late medieval wooden caskets decorated with leather have attracted much greater attention in Germany and Belgium than in England. The Spitzer collection is one of the first that included examples of them, and the first major survey that mentioned them was that of Dr. H. Kohlhausen in 1926. His discussion of Minnekästchen, the romantic name given in the nineteenth century to caskets with secular subjects, included both caskets of wood alone and wood covered with leather. He discussed leather caskets now in the Deutsches Ledermuseum at Offenbach and in the Cluny Museum, Paris but, since he was solely concerned with secular iconography, he did not discuss other leather caskets whose style and technique indicated that they had a related origin. The whole group of leather caskets, including the two already mentioned and also caskets at Lucca and in the collection of Mr. Robert Martin on loan to the Cloisters, New York, was first discussed as a whole by Dr. G. Gall in his magisterial survey of European leatherwork. He assigned the Offenbach and Cloisters caskets to northern France or Flanders in the second half of the fourteenth century and the Lucca casket to Northern France or Flanders around 1400. Earlier in 1952 Mme A. M. Marien Dugardin reviewed the evidence for a number of leather caskets mainly in Belgium museums but including the example in the Cluny Museum and concluded from their use of Flemish for the inscriptions around their lids that they were Flemish in origin. In 1975 Mr. H. Bober discussed the Martin casket on loan to the Cloisters and concluded that it was of Flemish origin and dated to about 1400 or slightly earlier. In contradiction to the previously expressed views R. Didier in 1978, in the catalogue of the exhibition Die Parler und der Schöne Stil, discussing the lid of a casket preserved at Nivelles rejected a Flemish origin for the group and suggested that the caskets found an origin in the French sphere of influence, probably in Paris. This article will see how far the casket recently acquired by the British Museum (pis. xxviii-xxxin a) relates to these caskets and will review the evidence for its place of production.

In the Register belonging to the monastery of St. Edmundsbury, compiled in the time of William Curteys XXV Abbot, are two letters from King Henry VI. addressed, one to the Abbot, and the other to the Alderman and Bailiffs of the town, for the suppression of Lollards, and other seditious persons. As these letters, or any on the occasion which gave rise to them, do not occur in our historians, I send you copies of them: they appear to have been written in 1431.

I Venture to offer to the notice of the Society, through your hands, an account of the visit made by Don Manriquez de Lara, Duke of Najera, to England, in the year 1543-4. All contemporary narratives of this nature are interesting, more especially when written, as in the present instance, for private information only; and in this respect the relation in question possesses perhaps a superior claim to those of Paulo Jovio, Micheli, Perlin, and Hentzner, already before the public. It is extracted from a folio MS. volume, recently acquired by the Trustees of the British Museum, which is stated to have been procured from the library of Thomas Iriarte, the well known Spanish poet, and Archiviste of the Council of State. This volume consists of copies of a variety of valuable documents in the form of correspondence, narratives, and diplomatic instruments, from the year 1520 to the commencement of the sixteenth century, chiefly illustrative of the history of Spain during that period, but embracing also the transactions in Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Africa.

The metrical Tract which it is the design of the following remarks to introduce is peculiarly valuable to the English antiquary and historian. It refers to a series of events, the chief of which, though involving the fate of the kingdom, took place in a remote part of it; but the whole of them, from the various manner in which they have been recorded by different writers, seem to have been little understood, or much misrepresented at the period in which they occurred. It is also highly interesting to the general reader; for it offers an original circumstantial account of the fall of Richard the Second, who, whatever may have been his errors, is rendered by his misfortunes an object of commiseration. It bears sufficient internal evidence of it's authenticity, is the production of an eye-witness; and, so far as we have hitherto ascertained, is the best document of that kind, relative to the above fact, which has been transmitted to posterity.

The drawings which accompany this exhibit an antient sepulture discovered and dug up about three or four feet below the surface of an open field half a mile due east of the east gate of the antient Lindum.

Having lately had an opportunity of carefully perusing the Account-book of the Comptroller of the Wardrobe for the fourteenth year of King Edward the Second, now in the possession of Mr. Joseph Hunton of Richmond, in Yorkshire, I have been induced to compare it with similar Account-books, for the tenth and eleventh years of the same King's reign, amongst the manuscripts in the library of the Society; and to abstract from them such entries as fix the date of transactions embodied in the narratives of chroniclers, supply the omissions of the genealogists of our royal and noble houses, or are curious as illustrating ancient customs and manners.

In 1896 the late Mr. Percy Manning, M.A., F.S.A., compiled an archaeological survey of Oxfordshire on the same lines as those already published by the Societyof Antiquaries of London, but for some reason did not have it printed immediately with the result that the manuscript soon ceased to be up to date. Nevertheless from the year 1896 right down to the beginning of the war he was assiduous in collecting every available piece of information about archaeological discoveries in the county, and, as the material collected shows, had evidently some intention of publishing it in a near future. This intention was frustrated, however, by the outbreak of war and later by his death in 1916. He bequeathed his manuscript collections to the University of Oxford and the archaeological portion has been deposited in the Ashmolean Museum.

I send you the drawings and description of the entrenchment on Hengistbury Head, and the Camp on St. Catherine's-Hill, the fruit of our joint labours, in the measurement and investigation of which both you and our friend Topham worked so assiduously.

The parish of Trinity in the Minories is on the scite of a religious house, which became parochial on the suppression of the monastery in the reign of Henry VIII. It appears originally to have been a part of the parish of St. Botolph Aldgate, when Blanche, queen of Navarre, (the wife of Edmund duke of Lancaster, Leicester, and Derby, brother to king Edward I.) was desirous of signalizing her pious zeal according to the custom of the times by erecting an abbey.
