The last Interim Report on the excavations at Glastonbury was read before this Society on 29th November 1928, and a precis of this report was printed in vol. lxxiv of the Proceedings of the Somersetshire Archaeological Society.

The Musée du Louvre has lately received as a gift from the City of Paris–in whose historical museum, the Carnavalet, they had been preserved–five English alabaster reliefs: a ‘Betrayal’, complete, but with a weathered surface; a fine ‘Christ led to Judgement’; a fragmentary ‘Christ before Pilate’; a ‘Naming of St. John’; and a ‘St. Michael and the Blessed Virgin’.

A comparative study of three thirteenth-century rolls of arms, the Heralds' Roll, the Dering Roll, and the Camden Roll, shows the extent to which the first was copied in the preparation of the other two. Light is also thrown on the way in which heraldic copyists worked and on the identity and nature of early armorial bearings.

Details of a recently discovered Ewart Park phase hoard from Boreham, Essex are reported. The opportunity is also taken to publish Late Bronze Age metal finds from Boreham, together with a hoard discovered in the nineteenth century at Little Baddow. These finds are viewed in the light of recent fieldwork and previous finds in the Chelmer Valley.

‘Was there’, asks Mrs. Cunnington in the January number of this Journal, ‘a Second Belgic Invasion (represented by bead-rim pottery)?’ The answer on her last page is that it ‘remains extremely doubtful’. Her article is in fact a vigorous challenge to belief in this invasion, as maintained by us in a paper published last year, entitled ‘The Belgae of Gaul and Britain’. To this paper she does not indeed allude by name, for her notice is confined to one or its six sections only. In bringing the issue here once more under discussion, we feel bound to restore this section to its context, if only to give it no more importance than its due, for there are sundry points that have thus lain outside the scope of Mrs. Cunnington's article which may nevertheless perhaps prove important in estimating the matter as a whole. We will follow her arguments in order.

A study of the surviving remains of the Cistercian abbey church of Dundrennan, Kirkcudbright, reveals that the monks undertook a massive remodelling of the eastern portions in the late twelfth century. It was largely confined to the east walls of the transepts, the transept chapels, and the crossing, and was intended to give greater height and space by the addition of a third storey. The inspiration for the new ideas was evidently derived from Cistercian houses in the north of England such as Kirkstead, Roche and Byland.

The chapel of St. Hubert, Idsworth, Hants, has a fourteenth-century wall-painting, on the north wall of the chancel, which is in two tiers, the upper representing a hunting scene on the left and, on the right, the first of a series of episodes from the life of a saint, which latter are concluded in the lower tier. Though this painting has received critical attention since 1864, there has not been agreement on its interpretation. The present article adduces fresh evidence which supports the opinion of the late Professor F. Wormald, expressed in the Antiquaries Journal for 1945, that the left-hand side of the upper tier represents a scene from the legend of the hairy anchorite, followed by episodes from the last days of St. John the Baptist, and suggests what may be the literary origin, foreseen, but not identified, by Wormald, of the connection between these two subjects.

Fourteen bronze axe-heads of the palstave type were found in an earthen bowl 3 ft. below the surface in Southend Brickfield at a spot approximately 200 ft. from the west corner of the Girls' National School, and 510 ft. from the south-west corner of No. 1, Dodinga. The bowl was broken, and the base and the greater part of the lower part were not recovered; but sufficient of the upper part was saved to give the approximate diameter and enough of the sides to give the profile except at the base. It is hand-made and burnt a dark brown. After restoration in May 1923, it has a diameter at the mouth of 7⅞ in., and a maximum diameter of 9¾ in. The lip is slightly incurved and 1½ in. below it a shallow irregular groove ½ in. wide encircles the bowl. Below this, 2¼ in. from the lip, is a single row of impressed double circles, approximately ¼ in. in diameter and in. apart. Below these a band ¾ in. wide of six horizontal uneven lines, the row of circles being repeated below. The total width of the ornamental band, consisting of two rows of circles and the six lines between, is 1⅝ in.

From a chronological point of view the pottery may be divided into three sections:

A 1: The ditch under E. hypocaust and corridor.

A 2: The deposit S. of the bath.

B: The corridor below the pavement level.

C: The corridor above the pavement level and Rooms V, VIII, IX, X, XI.

Earthworks are not numerous in Norfolk, owing no doubt to the fact that the county is a somewhat flat one, and Hadrian Allcroft in Earthwork of England is almost silent upon the subject of camps in this district. Probably one of the best known is the Roman camp at Brancaster (Branodunum) on the north coast between Hunstanton and Wells, which encloses an area of 8¼ acres. The square is clearly visible, although becoming yearly more reduced by the action of the plough.

The majority of the helmets suspended over monuments in English churches are of mediocre quality, and were probably supplied by the undertaker for the funeral. Their interest lies in their being relics of a once widespread custom. But among them are a few specimens of great value as examples of the armourer's craft.

The Introduction to the Institute of Field Archaeologists' Code of Conduct states that: ‘Archaeology is the study of the nature and the past behaviour of Man in his environmental setting’. One of the principal environments Man has used is the maritime one, and for convenience of exposition the term ‘maritime’ is taken here to include inland waters, lakes, rivers and estuaries, as well as the seas and oceans. This usage is not only for convenience but also because there is continuity between the sea and inland waters: they are physically connected, and often the same vessels and the same men use them.
