The testate amoeba, ciliate and rotifera communities living in interstitial waters in peatbog in eastern Poland were studied. Sampling was done on a monthly basis from April to November 2007–2008. Microbial communities were examined in a transect including three sites: (1) pine forest (site located 5 m from the lagg/forest contact zone), (2) lagg, (3) open peatbog (the centre of the peatbog). At each of the sites, interstitial water was sampled by means of piezometric wells placed to a depth of 1 m. The species richness and abundance of protozoa and rotifers significantly differed between the studied stations, with the lowest numbers in the pine forest and the highest in the lagg. These differences between macro-habitats may be due to differences in environmental conditions. The distribution of samples in ordination space led to conclude that studied habitats are distributed along the falling gradient of pH and rising gradient of total organic carbon, water table depth and nitrate nitrogen. Assemblages of all three groups showed a strong compositional gradient correlated with water-table depth, conductivity and total phosphorus. However, species composition of ciliates and rotifers was explained by nitrate nitrogen and/or phosphates concentrations. The results suggest that lagg zone of a raised bog can fulfil the function of an ecotone zone, distinguished by a significant increase in biodiversity, abundance and species specificity of micro-organisms. It can also be a place of very efficient matter and energy flow in a peat bog ecosystem.

L'examen de 110 échantillons pélagiques et de 16 échantillons littoraux de plusieurs corps d'eaux du bassin moyen de l'Orénoque (lac de barrage, lacs d'inondation du système Orénoque et Caroni, rivières) a permis d'identifier 58 taxa de Cladocères, dont 24 sont nouveaux pour la faune vénézuélienne. 2 espèces, Alona ovata et Bosminopsis macaguensis, sont nouvelles pour la science. Alona karelica, élément paléarctique, n'avait jamais été mentionnée sur le continent américain.35 % de la faune étudiée sont représentés par des formes néotropicales, dont 8 endémiques sud-américaines.Une partie taxonomique illustrée est consacrée à 13 espèces rares ou peu connues.La répartition des espèces dans les milieux prospectés et dans les deux catégories d'eaux blanches et d'eaux noires,a été étudiée. La faune la plus riche de Cladocères a été observée dans les lacs d'inondation de l'Orénoque, la diversité spécifique étant due aux formes littorales appartenant principalement à la famille des Chydoridae.En milieu pélagique, les corps d'eaux blanches sont caractérisés par l'association Moina minuta, Ceriodaphnia cornuta, Bosmina tubicen, Bosminopsis deitersi, les corps d'eaux noires par la dominance des Bosminidae : Bosmina hagmanni, Bosminopsis macaguensis, Bosminopsis deitersi, Ceriodaphnia cornuta. Le cas de Daphnia gessneri, généralement considérée endémique du système Amazone-Orénoque et présente dans un seul relevé, est discuté.

The life cycle of a brackish-water population of Palaemonetes argentinus, a normally freshwater shrimp from the warm temperateregion of eastern South America, was studied in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina. In 1995, recruitment took placein January, followed by two growth periods, the first at the beginning of summer and the second from the end of winter throughmost of spring. Females reached a larger size than males. Ovigerous females, probably belonging to two cohorts, were foundfrom October 1995 to February 1996, with a maximum number in November (93 %). Their average size and fecundity varied duringthe breeding period. The sex ratio did not significantly differ from 1:1 except in November. Evidence of mature oocytes inthe ovaries was found in ovigerous and postovigerous shrimps, suggesting that they breed twice a year. However, only some femalesof the first cohort produced a second hatch in 1995. The maximum number of undifferentiated embryos carried by a femalewas 250; there was a positive relationship between fecundity and size. Larvae were collected together with adults from Novemberto March. The life history is similar to that described in several freshwater populations. Differences are restricted to chronologicalaspects such as a shorter unimodal breeding period and are probably related to climatic factors, since Mar Chiquita is nearthe southern limit of the geographic range of the species. Data presented here suggest interannual variations in reproductive patternsthat lead, sometimes, to a longer bimodal breeding period.

Huit algues du phytoplancton d'eau douce ont été étudiées en culture (6 Chlorophycées, 1 Diatomée, 1 Cyanophycée). Les vitesses d'assimilation de l'azote (NNO3), du phosphore (PPO4) et de la silice ont été mesurées en batch par des expériences de perturbation. Les vitesses maximales d'assimilation et les Ks correspondants sont exprimés en fonction de la température. Les réserves intracellulaires (quota maximal et quota minimal) ont été déterminées pour les huit espèces. L'utilisation des paramètres ainsi déterminés permet une bonne prédiction des vitesses d'assimilation.

Le Haut-Rhône entre Genève et Lyon héberge 7 espèces d'Hydropsychidae. La manière dont ont pu être déterminées les larves de ces 7 espèces et de courtes diagnoses pour chacune d'entre elles sont données dans la première partie. La répartition de ces 7 espèces dans le Haut-Rhône est présentée dans la seconde partie. La succession longitudinale de ces Hydropsychidae se fait, avec d'importants recouvrements, dans l'ordre suivant : H. siltalai, H. pellucidula, H. contubernalis, H. dissimulata, H. ornatula, C. lepida et H. exocellata. Le statut écologique de chacune de ces espèces est discuté par rapport à d'autres travaux sur des hydrosystèmes similaires. Le Haut-Rhône présente deux types de peuplement marquant peut-être un changement écologique de l'amont vers l'aval.

A microcosm experiment was carried out in order to test the effect of the herbicide metolachlor on river periphytic diatoms and to find potential diatom bioindicators of contamination. Effects were investigated at different biological organization levels (biofilm, diatom community, population and individual levels). The colonization of glass substrates by natural biofilm in artificial streams did not vary quantitatively between control and contaminated conditions (5 and 30 μg.L−1). However, non-parametric multivariate analysis of variance revealed a significant difference between contaminated and control diatom communities with regard to species composition. The difference was due to the greater development of probably tolerant species in the presence of the herbicide (e.g., Planothidium frequentissimum, Planothidium lanceolatum, Amphora montana, Surirella brebissonii and Nitzschia gracilis). An increase in the occurrence of abnormal forms was observed in relation to metolachlor concentration. In particular, up to 8% of the frustules of the species Surirella angusta exhibited prominent deformities. Monospecific acute toxicity tests were then performed on two species to estimate toxicity parameters based on growth inhibition. These tests also confirmed the teratogenic effect of the herbicide on S. angusta. This study shows that low concentrations of metolachlor in natural streams may significantly alter diatom community structure and that abnormal diatom forms should be taken into account in water contamination assessment.

Trois Crustacés et quatre Rotifères composent le zooplancton du lac de Port-Bielh (2 285 m) où dominent Mixodiaptomus laciniatus et Daphnia longispina.

La distribution verticale des organismes et ses variations nycthémérales diffèrent selon les espèces et, pour une même espèce, selon les stades de développement. La quantité d'animaux exportés en 24 h par le déversoir, liée à la distribution verticale du zooplancton, représente un faible pourcentage des populations (0,14 à 2,8 ‰) mais une biomasse importante (0,45 à 1,2 kg PF/jour).

Le cycle de développement des Crustacés se caractérise par une longue phase de repos durant les 7 mois de gel, une courte période de reproduction au début de l'été et une phase de croissance rapide (août et septembre) aboutissant à une biomasse maximale en octobre. La durée de développement des différents stades de M. laciniatus et de D. longispina, déterminée d'après l'évolution numérique des populations, est proche des durées obtenues expérimentalement par plusieurs auteurs.

La production de M. laciniatus et de D. longispina a été calculée à partir de l'évolution du poids des individus en fonction de leur âge et de la variation du poids moyen des organismes au cours de l'été. Ces deux méthodes et leur variante graphique donnent des résultats assez voisins. Le rapport Production/Biomasse maximale est comparable pour les deux espèces (1,35 à 1,65) et se situe dans les valeurs déjà mentionnées pour des populations d'insectes aquatiques d'altitude. La production du Rotifère dominant (Polyartra vulgaris) représente moins de 1 % de celle des deux Crustacés.

La comparaison de la production primaire et secondaire de la zone pélagique indique une exploitation intense du phytoplancton par les herbivores. Malgré une faible biomasse, les algues constituent vraisemblablement une source de nourriture suffisante pour assurer la production du zooplancton.

Macroinvertebrates have been collected in Flanders since 1989 by the Flemish Environment Agency to assess ecological water quality. During the present study, the collected waterbugs were identified to species level. In total, more than 90 000 waterbugs were identified, belonging to 45 species. Two of these are recent additions to Flemish fauna: Sigara iactans was found to be a common species in 1989, the first year of monitoring, which is earlier than the first records reported so far, whereas Cymatia rogenhoferi remains a very rare species. Five different communities could be recognized: (1) species occurring in alkaline waters with a high pH, (2) species occurring in colder waters that can tolerate slightly brackish and nutrient rich water, (3) species from running waters, (4) species from acidic waters and (5) ubiquist species that occurred in all types of water. Owing to the general improvement of chemical water quality during the last decade, most species increased, however, three pollution tolerant species declined significantly: Callicorixa praeusta, Corixa punctata and Sigara striata.

Wetlands are one of the most altered natural systems due to the creation and development of agricultural landscapes. Some ofagriculture’s impacts are in relation to water quality decreases, due to the use of potentially toxic herbicides or pesticides, andthey are responsible of ecological alterations. This study shows the negative effect that two pesticides generate in a populationof the copepod Arctodiaptomus salinus in an aquatic ecosystem that is surrounded by intensive olive tree cultivation. Adultfemales and egg sacs of that calanoid copepod were exposed to different concentrations of copper sulphate and the pesticidedimethoate, to examine their tolerance response. The adult lethal concentration obtained was lower than the regular dose of pesticideused in olive agriculture. These results also reflect the negative effect over A. salinus secondary production as a consequenceof the increase in females and nauplii mortality and by the hatching rate reduction.

Water chemistry and macroinvertebrates of four high mountain lakes (alt. 1657-1784 m) were investigated. The lakes areultraoligotrophic with naturally slightly acidic water. In three lakes these water level changed substantially during the year while in one it remained constant. Moreover, trophic status was higher in one than in the other three. Oligochaeta and Chironomidae dominated the invertebrate fauna of all lakes. Benthic faunal composition depended mainly on ecological factors such as substrate, trophic status, and hydroperiod. It appears that anthropogenic acidification has so far not affected faunal composition.

Le site de l'Ile du Grand Gravier constitue un champ captant pour l'alimentation en eau potable de 80 000 équivalent-habitants. Sa situation dans le fleuve Rhône, à l'aval immédiat de l'agglomération lyonnaise et du couloir de la chimie, pose le problème de la vulnérabilité de la ressource en eau à une pollution du fleuve. Le site a fait l'objet de recherches hydrauliques et biologiques au niveau d'une parcelle expérimentale.L'étude des oligochètes a permis de dresser le diagnostic d'un état de pollution important du fleuve sur le secteur envisagé. Il apparaît de plus que certains taxons d'oligochètes, en particulier le genre Phallodrilus, décrivent une augmentation des échanges nappe-cours d'eau.L'ensemble de ces données souligne la vulnérabilité du site à une pollution transitant par le Rhône.Les résultats de cette première approche sont discutés. Il s'avère notamment que les aspects saisonniers n'ont pas été pris en considération. Le développement de la méthodologie est envisagé par l'étude complète de plusieurs autres parcelles.

To understand ostracod distribution and ecology at high altitudes (1659–2889 m a.s.l.), 78 different aquatic sites located in the city of Van were sampled during summer of 2009. A total of 29 ostracod species were recorded in 57 sites. Among the species, Trajancypris laevis (G.W. Müller 1900), is a new report for the Turkish ostracod fauna. First axis of Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) explained about 68% of the relationships between the 13 most abundant species and environmental variables. Four variables (redox potential, habitat type, pH and electrical conductivity) had the greatest effect on species composition (P<0.01). Twenty-six species encountered from 38 stations were restricted between 1659 and 1750 m a.s.l. Above 1750 m a.s.l., the numbers of species were not significantly affected by altitude (P>0.05). Three species (Heterocypris incongruens (Ramdohr, 1808), Ilyocypris bradyi Sars, 1890 and Potamocypris villosa (Jurine, 1820)) occurred extensively from 1650 to 2350 m a.s.l. Spearman rank correlation revealed a negative relationship between Limnocythere inopinata (Baird, 1843) and altitude (r=−0.894, P=0.05), while two species (I. bradyi and Prionocypris zenkeri (Chyzer and Toth, 1858)) had a positive correlation to dissolved oxygen (P=0.05). There was a significantly negative relationship between Ilyocypris inermis Kaufmann, 1900 and electrical conductivity, and H. incongruens showed a significant correlation to station type. Five groups of species were determined by UPGMA analysis. Species in each cluster were grouped according to ecological conditions suitable for them. Results revealed that species ecological tolerances and optimum levels can be species-specific but species with cosmopolitan distributions tend to have high tolerance ranges to different variables, including altitudinal changes.

The diatoms are an ecologically important group of algae that have been extensively studied by ecologists and taxonomists. However, the large-scale patterns of diatom distribution and the factors underlying this distribution are largely unknown. The aims of this study were to identify the large-scale spatial patterns of benthic diatom assemblages in Korean streams and rivers, and to assess the importance of numerous environmental factors on diatom distribution. We classified 720 study sites based on diatom flora. Benthic diatoms, water chemistry, altitude, and riparian land cover and use were characterized by multivariate analyses, Monte Carlo permutation tests, and indicator species analysis. In total, we identified 531 diatom taxa. Diatom assemblages were mostly dominated by species of the genera Achnanthes, Navicula, Nitzschia, Cocconeis, Fragilaria (Synedra included), Cymbella, Gomphonema, and Melosira. Cluster analysis partitioned all 720 sites into eight groups based on diatom species composition. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that altitude, land cover and use, current velocity, electrical conductivity, and nutrient levels explained a significant amount of the variation in the composition of assemblages of benthic diatoms. At the national scale, a downstream ecological gradient was apparent, from fast-flowing, mostly oligotrophic highland streams to slow-flowing, mostly eutrophic lowland rivers. Our data suggest that spatial factors explain some of the variation in diatom distribution. The present investigation of the spatial patterns of benthic diatoms, the ecological determinants of diatom occurrence, and the identification of diatom indicator species contributes to development of a program for assessing the biological integrity of lotic ecosystems in Korea.

Le phytoplancton et la productivité primaire ont été étudiés au lac de Port-Bielh (2 285 m), de juin 1967 à octobre 1971, ainsi que dans trois lacs voisins de plus faibles dimensions, en 1968. L'évolution du peuplement phytoplanctonique et de la productivité primaire et ses relations avec les composantes physiques, chimiques et biologiques de ces milieux lacustres de haute montagne sont analysées dans ce travail.

Le phytoplancton se compose d'espèces de petite taille (nannoplancton) où dominent des formes flagellées (Chrysomonadines et Cryptomonadines) et des Diatomées (Cyclotella). Les Chlorophycées sont peu abondantes, les Péridiniens pratiquement absents. Si ces groupes ce succèdent au cours de l'été de façon à peu près identique, le peuplement des quatre lacs diffère, tant sur le plan qualitatif que quantitatif.

Le cycle annuel du phytoplancton du lac de Port-Bielh se caractérise par la succession de deux périodes distinctes. En hiver, les quantités d'algues sont réduites (3 à 28 mg de Poids frais/m3) ; près du fond se développent d'importantes populations de bactéries anaérobies, associées à des Cyanophycées et à Astasia sp. En été, la biomasse algale est de 180 mg de Poids frais/m3 en moyenne, elle atteint un maximum (420 à 510 mg de Poids frais/m3) chaque année trois semaines à un mois après la disparition de la glace. Pour la majorité des espèces, les populations les plus denses se développent dans la zone profonde du lac, en période de stratification thermique. L'isothermie d'automne entraîne une répartition homogène des algues dans toute la masse d'eau.

En hiver, la productivité primaire du lac de Port-Bielh, très faible sous la glace, est de l'ordre de 10 µg C/m3 jour) la fixation de carbone à l'obscurité est relativement importante, notamment dans la zone profonde. En été, l'assimilation obscure représente généralement moins de 2 % de la photosynthèse ; la productivité moyenne est de 18,9 mg C/m3/ jour avec deux maxima (23,5 à 36,3 mg C/m3/jour) qui correspondent, le premier, au pic de phytoplancton, le second, à l'isothermie d'automne. Le coefficient d'activité du phytoplancton est élevé (0,143 mg C/mg de Poids frais/jour en moyenne) ; il augmente progressivement au cours de l'été, corrélativement à la diminution de la biomasse et du volume moyen des éléments du phytoplancton.

La productivité des lacs de faible profondeur est deux à quatre fois supérieure à celle du lac de Port-Bielh. Cette différence peut-être attribuée à leur constante homothermie qui favorise les échanges permanents entre la vase et l'eau. La composition et la densité du peuplement phytoplanctonique et sa productivité paraissent liées au régime hydrologique qui détermine l'évolution des composantes chimiques.

La lumière joue un rôle important dans la dynamique du phytoplancton de ces lacs d'altitude. Son atténuation par la glace et la neige empêche pratiquement tout processus d'assimilitation photosynthétique pendant les six mois d'hiver. Durant la période estivale, et par suite de la forte transparence des eaux, les phénomènes d'inhibition réduisent la photosynthèse. Dans le lac de Port-Bielh, cet effet est sensible jusqu'à 8 à 10 mètres de profondeur. L'analyse des profils verticaux de photosynthèse pendant l'isothermie d'automne et au cours d'une journée montre que la relation photosynthèse-lumière peut être décrite par une loi générale commune à tous les milieux aquatiques. La comparaison avec les lacs de faible profondeur et les relations entre la biomasse algale et le rapport P/B indiquent cependant que la lumière n'agit pas indépendamment des paramètres chimiques ; son effet et inhibiteur paraît d'autant plus prononcé que la disponibilité en sels dissous est faible. La productivité des lacs de montagne résulte sans doute de l'action conjuguée de ces deux facteurs, la température intervenant apparamment peu sur l'activité photosynthétique des algues.

Dans le lac de Port-Bielh, après la disparition de la glace, le développement du phytoplancton entraîne un appauvrissement en substances dissoutes. Les teneurs minimales, à la fin de la période de stratification thermique, correspondent à une diminution de la biomasse algale et de la productivité. Parmi les facteurs responsables de cette diminution, la faible teneur en CO2 libre paraît jouer un rôle important.

Il n'existe pas de correspondance étroite entre l'évolution de la productivité et celle de la biomasse algale. Dans le lac de Port-Bielh, la poussée de photosynthèse automnale n'entraîne pas une augmentation de la biomasse ou une diminution de l'indice de diversité. Pendant la stratification d'été, les fortes biomasses algales se forment à une profondeur supérieure à celle de l'optimum de photosynthèse journalier. Ces différences peuvent être attribuées à l'action du zooplancton dont la répartition verticale, la composition et la densité varient au cours de l'été.

Comparés avec d'autres lacs d'altitude et des lacs arctiques, les lacs du vallon de Port-Bielh se distinguent par une forte productivité estivale, voisine de celle de certains lacs mesotrophes alpins. Malgré une activité photosynthétique intense, la biomasse de phytoplancton reste cependant assez faible du fait de la courte durée de vie des organismes nannoplanctoniques qui la composent et de la prédation par le zooplancton.

L'échantillonnage des rives aquatiques du Rhône, en amont de Lyon, fournit une approche faunistique nouvelle du milieulotique. Les rives sont définies avec précision : la zone prospectée correspond à la frange supérieure de la rive immergée.Une mosaïque complexe de microhabitats constitue la rive ; une liste non exhaustive en est proposée. Une descriptiondes techniques de prélèvement de chaque microhabitat est également fournie. Enfin une Analayse des Correspondancessur la matrice 35 relevés × 80 taxons montre que les microhabitats abritent des communautés faunistiques effectivement différentes et caractéristiques des trois milieux d'érosion, de sédimentation et de végétation. La définition a priori des microhabitats est donc validée par la distribution des macroinvertébrés. Quelques exemples de taxons caractéristiques des différents microhabitats sont donnés : Trichoptères Leptoceridae en microhabitats d'érosion, Hydropsyche sp. dans les racines ou Oligochètes en microhabitat de sédimentation.

Without human intervention, ponds progressively fill up with aquatic vegetation, so that the structure and age of the vegetalformations show great contrasts within a given set of water bodies. We hypothesized that the biological traits of pond invertebratecommunities differed significantly among ponds having different vegetal formations. To test this hypothesis, we selected threeneighbouring ponds showing a gradient of vegetation cover and type (sparse bryophytes on rocky substrata (pond 1), extensivesubmerged Chara beds (pond 2), aerial Typha stands (pond 3)), and we studied between-ponds variations in the combinations ofspecies traits. Taxa biomass was monthly recorded in each pond over one year, to take into account species’ seasonality. Speciestraits were described using a fuzzy-coding method and a simultaneous analysis of the two matrices (co-inertia analysis) was usedto investigate changes in biological trait composition. Biomass increased from pond 1 to pond 3, and was higher in vegetal than inmuddy mesohabitats. Among 25 biological traits, 10 were significantly correlated to the distribution of samples: number of generationsper year, cohort production interval, adult longevity, adult size, number of eggs per female, dispersal ability, dispersal mode,consumer level, ingested food type, and feeding group. Invertebrates in pond 1 species allocated much energy to reproduction,while in pond 3 resource use was favoured by larger body size, long-lived organisms, and a higher diversity of feeding groups.Our results suggest that the structure and age of the vegetal formation play role in selecting species traits related to populationdynamics and feeding habits.

Recent studies substantiate the importance of the unsaturated zone in ground-water biodiversity of karst areas. Few investigations, however, have addressed the temporal changes in community composition in relation to water physico-chemical features. We provide information on the distribution pattern of the fauna in dripping water at spatial and temporal scales. This is related to variation in water chemistry and other environmental features in five caves within two hydrographic basins of the Pădurea Craiului Mountains (northwestern Romania). The analysis revealed no major pollution in the dripping water. The physico-chemical parameters varied within and between caves over one year. The dripping water fauna is heterogeneously distributed within and between the caves, containing a mixture of epigean and hypogean species. This emphasizes high microhabitat partition and also underlines the influence of physico-chemical parameters. The species composition among the two hydrographic basins was different. Crustaceans are the best represented in terms of both abundance and species richness. Six out of 15 crustacean species are endemic to the Pădurea Craiului Mountains and four are new to science. All these point to the importance of unsaturated karstic habitats as biodiversity hot spots in ground-water ecosystems.

The effects of cyanobacterial toxins on herbivorous zooplankton depend on cyanobacterial strains, zooplankton species and environmental conditions. To explore the relationship between zooplankton and cyanobacteria, we investigated the effects of Planktothrix agardhii extracts on Daphnia magna population dynamics. We designed an experiment where individuals were grown in the presence of extracts of two P. agardhii strains. We monitored daily life-history parameters of D. magna individuals subjected to microcystin-RR (MC-RR), intracellular and extracellular extracts of a microcystin-producing strain (MC-strain, PMC 75.02) and a microcystin-free strain (MC-free strain, PMC 87.02) of P. agardhii. Measured life-history parameters of D. magna were used to build population dynamics models and compute expected population growth rate, replacement rate, generation time and proportion of adult and juveniles at demographic equilibrium. Results show that MC-RR tends to slow the life history (reduced growth rate and larger proportion of adults). In contrast, intracellular extracts of the two strains tend to accelerate the life history (increased growth rate, decreased generation time and lower proportion of adults). Extracellular extracts produce the same trends as the intracellular extracts but to a lesser extent. However, the MC-strain has stronger effects than the MC-free strain. Interestingly, extracellular extracts of the MC-free strain may have effects comparable to pure MC-RR. Moreover, in the presence of MC-RR and both cyanobacterial extracts, the daily fecundities present a cyclic pattern. These results suggest that MC-RR and unknown metabolites of cyanobacterial extracts have negative effects on D. magna reproduction processes such as those observed with endocrine-disruptive molecules.

Diatoms and geochemical stratigraphy were studied in sediment core samples collected from a heavily polluted urban lake (SE China) in order to track the history of eutrophication and heavy metal contamination. The sediment profile covered ca. 60 years (from ca. 1951 to 2011) based on 137Cs and Spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCP) dating, and encompassed a period of rapid industrial development in this region. Diatoms experienced two visible shifts, including the replacement of benthic and epiphytic taxa by planktonic species (e.g., Cyclotella meneghiniana Kützing) in 1972, and the dominance of Cyclotella atomus Hustedt and Nitzschia palea (Kützing) W. Smith after 1999. Metals (i.e., Cd, Pb and Zn), total phosphorus, total nitrogen and total organic carbon all increased in the past 60 years. Redundancy analysis was used to correlate diatom with chemical change and explained 50.3–60% of total variation in diatom data for three periods (from 1951 to 1999, between 1951 and 2011 and from 1972 to 2011). The combined effects of nutrients and metals were the predominant factor, capturing 29.6–42.8% of the total variance. Nutrients alone accounted for little more variance than did metals alone for the first flora shift about 1972. The further shift after 1999 was more influenced by the sole effect of metals than that of nutrients. Increases in species (e.g., N. Palea) able to tolerate both nutrient-related and metal-related stressors were related to persistent nutrient and metal inputs. In addition, climate warming might exacerbate eutrophication and metal contamination in this lake.

Par suite de la diversité de leurs moeurs, les Trichoptères peuvent être rassemblés dans des groupes distincts dans lesquels les espèces, par leur comportement, par leur mode de nutrition et par leur localisation réagissent d'une manière semblable aux facteurs du milieu. Des vicariances peuvent être mises en évidence au sein de ces groupes dont les espèces occupent des niches écologiques semblables.

La distribution des espèces d'un même groupe est comparée et figurée dans des schémas faisant intervenir l'altitude et l'importance du cours d'eau (indiquée par le bassin versant) dans les vallées étudiées : bassin de la Garonne en amont de Toulouse, vallées d'Aspe et d'Ossau, vallée de l'Aude.

A partir de ces représentations, 6 grands types de distribution peuvent être distingués pour les Trichoptères du bassin de la Garonne :

— espèces bien représentées au-dessus de 2 000 m, plus rares au-dessous de 1 000 m,

— espèces à grande amplitude altitudinale, remontant au-dessus de 1 800-2 000 m,

— espèces des sources et ruisseaux de basse et moyenne montagne,

— espèces de rivières de montagne,

— espèces localisées aux rivières de basse altitude,

— espèces de grandes rivières, récoltées dans la Garonne en amont de Toulouse, rares ou absentes au-dessus de 500 m.

Ces types de distribution sont mis en rapport avec les groupements déterminés statistiquement en vallée d'Aure d'une part, avec la répartition géographique des espèces d'autre part.
