The macroinvertebrate fauna of twenty-one ponds (thirteen temporary and eight permanent) located in four protected areas in Central Italy were studied in March, May and June 2002, with the aim to bring out relationships between environmental variables and the functional characteristics (functional feeding groups, habits and resistance to drought) of communities. Macroinvertebrates were collected in three mesohabitat types (macrophyte beds, littoral sediments, central sediments). Overall, the functional attributes of temporary and permanent pond communities did not differ greatly. However, at the mesohabitat scale, collector-gatherers, burrowers and permanent residents capable of passive dispersal were more abundant in sediments. Scrapers and shredders, sprawlers and climbers, swimmers and divers, and organisms capable of active dispersal which lack drought resistance were more abundant in macrophyte beds. Although hydroperiod is the main driving factor affecting community structure, our results suggest that it remains an unimportant factor in controlling functional traits, which appeared to be more influenced by substratum types. Moreover, the positive relationship between taxonomic and functional diversity metrics indicates that an increase in taxonomic richness induces a satisfactory partitioning of the ecological resources among taxa, thus maintaining the ecological complexity of the ponds regardless of their hydroperiod length.

We report the results of a study carried out in 2002 on the main limnological characteristics and on the ostracod communities of 16 wetlands of the Parco Oglio Sud (Northern Italy). Physical and hydrochemical variables were measured and ostracod samples were collected in different seasons (April, June, August, and October). Most of the considered sites were characterised by high concentrations of nitrogenous compounds due to washing out from cultivated areas, intermittent river flooding and internal recycling. Observed differences in macrophyte communities were consistent with trophic status of waters, with pleustonic forms dominating most degraded areas. Both morphology of valves (by scanning electron microscopy) and anatomy of soft parts were analysed for ostracod species identification. Nineteen ostracod species in five families were found. Two species, Candona weltneri and Pseudocandona compressa, are new records for Italy. Cypria ophthalmica was collected from all sampling sites; other relatively common species were Cypridopsis vidua, Cyclocypris ovum, and Candona weltneri. No clear seasonality was observed in community structure; highest species diversity occurred in June in most of the studied wetlands. The maximum number of species per site was seven, and a maximum of six species was found in a single sample. Ostracod occurrence in relation to environmental factors was examined using Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Total alkalinity and pH were the most important variables structuring the species assemblages. The ostracod fauna found in this area was compared to the known distribution of recent non-marine ostracods in Italy, and the validity of published checklists is discussed.

The Guadiana estuary (Iberian Peninsula, Europe) has low agriculture, industry and urban pressure, unlike other major Iberianestuaries; however, this situation is about to change. The Alqueva dam was constructed at 150 km from the river mouth, creatingone of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe, which will support 110 000 ha of irrigation areas. Moreover, the estuarine marginsare suffering increased human pressure. The risks that the Alqueva dam will pose to the downstream ecosystems, mainly to theestuary and adjacent coastal area, will be reviewed in this paper. Other issues are also analysed, as increased humandesertification in the Portuguese basin, real estate pressure and the impact of the construction of a public infrastructure in thePortuguese lower estuary. Increased problems of sediment load reduction, water quality deterioration and shifts in thedownstream fish populations are expected due to higher river flow reduction. Irreversible changes to estuarine margins andincreased risk of pollution in the estuary will result from the multiple urban pressures. Lack of forest management and increasedrisk of wildfires, leading to water quality degradation and increased soil erosion, are a result of human desertification in the upperPortuguese basin. Multiple solutions to tackle these problems have to be considered. Creating the International Natural Park ofthe Lower Guadiana would not be enough and tourism should not be regarded as the only way to develop such a poor region. Anecohydrological approach of the basin should be implemented, to establish scientific based solutions to help solving conflicts andtesting scenarios. Ultimately, the creation of a Portuguese-Spanish Basin Management Council for the lower Guadiana, involvingthose that are interested in the sustainable development of the Guadiana (local populations and associations, private stakeholders(dam managers, tourism entrepreneurs, farmers), local and national authorities, ENGO’s and scientists) is essential to produceecological and sustainable management decisions.

This article reports on the ecological preferences of benthic diatoms in relation to pH, conductivity and organic pollution-eutrophication and their tolerance spectrums. Three Pampean streams subjected to different human impacts were studied. The bottom substrate of these streams is mostly composed of slime-clay with low proportions of gravel and sand ; in consequence, the epipelon is the most represented benthic community. Samples were taken seasonally between 1997-1998 at 9 sampling sites. In each sampling station ten sub-samples were collected by pipetting a superficial layer (5-10 mm) of sediment from different places. Physico-chemical parameters were measured. Considering the ranges of pH, conductivity and organic pollution-eutrophicationthe diatom's tolerance spectrums were established. 162 diatom species were identified. More than 50 % of speciesoccurred in sites where the conductivity was lower than 600 µS cm-1. More than 50 % of species had their preference range in sites with moderate organic matter and nutrient content. Diatom species found show defined preferences for organic pollution-eutrophication, but show less consistent responses for conductivity and, particularly, hydrogen ions content.

This study investigated major pigment patterns of 8 cyanoprokaryota, 2 rhodophytes and 2 cryptomonads isolated from freshwater ecosystems. Analysis was done by means of HPLC. The method, historically adapted to marine phytoplankton, was modified to accommodate limnic algae. Quantitative results obtained in this study can be used for phytoplankton quantification techniques based on pigment patterns. Compared to marine strains, the studied freshwater cyanoprokaryote strains reveal a more complex pigment pattern, including myxoxanthophyll, canthaxanthin and echinenone. Cryptophyta possess the two acetylenic class-specific marker compounds allo- and monadoxanthin, crocoxanthin was not detectable. Rhodophytes show a simple pigment pattern similar to marine species. Previous reports as to the existence of chlorophyll-d could not be confirmed (historical reports probably refer to an artefact of preparation). Besides methodological considerations, the phenomenon of complementary chromatic adaptation is discussed briefly.

We evaluated the influence of environmental integrity and the potential as bioindicator of larval stages of species of Trichoptera in 20 streams of first to fourth order in the Pindaíba river basin, Mato Grosso, Central Brazil. We measured stream integrity with the habitat integrity index (HII), establishing three levels of conservation: preserved, altered and impacted environments. We used (i) simple regression to assess the effect of habitat integrity on species abundance of Trichoptera and (ii) the indicator species analysis (IndVal) to assess the potential as bioindicator of each species. We found that 12 morphospecies showed relationship with HII: six species were bioindicators of preserved and two species of altered environments. Morphospecies that showed relationship in the two analyses (i and ii) were considered strong bioindicators, considering that the other species supported higher environmental variation, becoming evident that loss of physical structure reduces the abundance of organisms specialized in preserved environments. The results showed that the distribution and abundance of trichopterans can be an indicator of habitat integrity. Trichopteran species have bioindicator potential, corroborating the hypotheses of this work that abundance of organisms will be smaller in environments with low integrity, and that many species are specific to preserved environments, disappearing from impacted environments, and also characteristic species of altered environments.

The fish diversity of the Slovak segment of the Danube (representing the transitional zone from the rhithron to the potamon) was under the control of the inland delta which existed in this region until 1992. Seventy-six species were recorded in the studied river section: 61 species were native, 11 were exotic, 5 or 7 were invaders from the lower sections of the Danube, 3 species (and one form) became extinct, and 7 species were not detected during the past 20 years. The increasing pollution until 1985 decreased the fish species richness, but the improvement of water quality thereafter rose their number. However, the construction of the Gabcíkovo River Barrage System put in operation in October 1992 started to change substantially fish species richness and quantity, and fish catch. The formerly functional inland delta controlled by the pulsating discharge disappeared, and was changed to an artificial system of isolated or only marginally connected habitats. The upstream fish migration was stopped by the Gabcíkovo dam and weirs in Cunovo. Therefore, the fish fauna of the side arms lost contact with fish of the main channel and of the bypass canal downstream. The loss of spawning habitats had fatal effects, especially for the wild carp and the pike, which number rapidly decreased. In general, the number of fish species, their density, and fish catch decreased significantly. To improve the situation, it is proposed: 1) to restore the bilateral connection between the main channel and the side arms, 2) to ensure fish migration between the main channel and the side arms, and 3) to simulate the original flooding of the floodplain.

The paper proposes a new biological method for assessing the quality of lakes. It is based on the comparison of littoral and profundal macroinvertebrate communities sampled in soft sediments. Two depths were sampled: one at the littoral zone (Zl = 2m) to define a littoral index (Bl ) related to the biogenic potential of the lake (quantitative data), the other at the deep zone (Zf = 0.66 Zmax) to define a taxonomic deficit index (Df ) connected with the quality of the water-sediment interface in deep zone (qualitative data). These two indexes were combined in a Lake Biotic Index (LBI), with a range from 0 to 20, which gives an evaluation of the biogenic capacity of a lake to the development of macroconsumer communities. Using the Bl and Df values any lake can be plotted on a typological graph which is helpfull to characterize lakes both quantitatively (oligo- to polybiotic) and qualitatively (eu- to dysbiotic). Lake Châlain (French Jura) is presented as an example of the method application with its macrofauna and the index calculation. Then, this lake was included in the typological graph with nine other French lakes studied using the same method. Each lake, characterized by its Bl, Df and LBI values, can be compared to the others in a typological scheme. The proposed indexes are discussed and bases for interpretation of the results are presented. The proposed classification of lakes gives an evaluation of their biogenic capacity concerning macroconsumers and can be usefully compared with other classifications, especially with trophic and sediment types, in functional studies as well as in lake diagnosis, in the context of the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/CE).

Changes in the abundance, species richness and species diversity of zooplankton were studied in the Paraguay River. Fifty-ninesites were studied at two hydrological phases between Porto Cáceres (16º03’S-26º23’W) and the confluence with the Paraná(Argentine, 26º53’S-58º23’W), representing a distance of 2270 km. Zooplankton densities varied between 1 and 60 ind.l-1 athigh water and between 11 and 100 ind.l-1 at low water. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the hydrological phaseexplained 64% of the variability in zooplankton density. Surveys found 196 taxa in the Paraguay River (including both the maincourse and its floodplain). The greater species richness was registered in the upper section. There were significant differences inthe species richness and species diversity of Rotifera (Monogononta) between hydrological phases. In the main channel, thehydrological phase explained 54% of variability in species richness, whereas water temperature and electric conductivityexplained less than 22% of the variability in species diversity. Rotifera was the most abundant group in both study periods.Despite the total number of species registered in the main channel, only six planktonic genera dominated the zooplanktonassemblage (Polyarthra, Synchaeta, Filinia, Keratella and Lecane). The most abundant cladocerans belonged to Bosminidae(Bosminopsis sp.) and the dominant copepods were in the nauplii and juveniles stages. A longitudinal pattern in dominant taxawas not defined at high water. At low water, three species-site groups were separated in relation to environmental variables. Thepulsing of the river determines the degree of connectivity with the floodplain and local features had a greater effect onzooplankton assemblages than large-scale landscape patterns.

1. - Des prélèvements de faune benthique ont été effectués à l'aide d'un filet-troubleau. Ils ont été complétés par des lavages de mousses, des chasses à vue d'imagos, ainsi que par l'examen de quelques collections.

2. - Les cours d'eau étudiés sont situés dans la Vallée d'Aure (2.1), le Couserans (2.3), et les Prépyrénées (2.4, voir fig. 2.1). Tous appartiennent au bassin de la Garonne en amont de son confluent avec l'Ariège.

La description des stations comprend les trois rubriques suivantes :

- topographie et réseau hydrographique,

- environnement (terrains traversés, climat, végétation, action de l'homme),

- mesures (débit, données physico-chimiques, constitution du lit, vitesse du courant) et prélèvements.

Quelques stations des Pyrénées du département de la Haute-Garonne (2.2) et des environs de Toulouse (2.5) sont décrites plus brièvement.

Ces cours d'eau appartiennent à la même région climatique. Ils diffèrent principalement les uns des autres par l'altitude, le débit et la nature des terrains. Les conditions rencontrées dans chacun d'eux se retrouvent dans beaucoup d'autres cours d'eau situés aux mêmes altitudes. Il sera toutefois nécessaire de compléter cette étude par des prélèvements effectués dans des massifs cristallins.

3. - Pour chacune des 78 espèces de Plécoptères, des 25 espèces d'Hydraena et des 26 espèces d'Elminthidae sont fournies les indications suivantes (après les synonymes utilisés dans d'autres publications consacrées à la même région) :

a) descriptions de référence,

b) nombre des imagos (récoltes personnelles, collection Despax, liste communiquée par M. J. Aubert),

c) nombre des stations correspondant aux imagos mentionnés en b) + nombre des autres stations,

d) répartition par départements,

e) distribution géographique en Europe occidentale et en Europe moyenne.

Les citations douteuses ou erronées et les espèces probables sont indiquées pour les Plécoptères (3.2.3) et les Coléoptères (3.3.3).

La distribution des espèces en fonction du nombre des individus capturés pour chacune d'elle s'apparente à une distribution log-normale, ou à une distribution binomiale négative, plutôt qu'à une série logarithmique (3.4.1).

4.1. - L'écologie des différents taxa est comparée en suivant l'ordre systématique.

4.2. - Le maximum d'abondance des Plécoptères se situe à plus haute altitude que celui des Coléoptères. Les imagos de ces derniers sont plus nombreux en été. En plaine, les mues imaginales des Plécoptères ont lieu soit au printemps, soit en automne, selon les espèces. L'écart entre ces deux périodes de vol diminue avec l'altitude et, en haute montagne, les imagos apparaissent de façon ininterrompue pendant toute la belle saison.

4.3. - Les Setipalpia prédominent dans un torrent situé vers 2 000 m alors qu'ils sont peu abondants dans les ruisseaux et rivières de basse altitude.

4.4. - Le plus souvent, les espèces d'un même genre de Plécoptère diffèrent par leur période de vol, par la position qu'elles occupent le long des cours d'eau, ou par ces deux caractères. Les relations mises en évidence dans les Pyrénées s'observent aussi dans les autres régions où cohabitent les mêmes espèces ou leurs vicariantes géographiques. Quelques espèces voisines, comme Nemoura fulviceps et N. flexuosa, ou Leuctra mortoni et L. digitata, par exemple, ont été trouvées dans des cours d'eau différents, sans qu'il soit encore possible d'établir une corrélation avec des données écologiques. Par contre, le nombre des espèces d'un même genre qui sont fréquemment associées dans les mêmes stations et qui ont la même période de vol est peu élevé. Des différences de substrats ont été observées pour certaines d'entre elles (Protonemura pyrenaica et P. r. spinulosa, Leuctra fusca et L. geniculata).

4.5. - On ne rencontre en haute montagne que les Hydraena du sous-genre Haenydra ; les Hydraena s. s. et les Phothydraena vivent surtout en basse altitude. Le sous-genre Hadrenya a une répartition intermédiaire.

4.6. - Les Haenydra du groupe gracilis se remplacent d'amont en aval dans les cours d'eau ; la zone de densité maximale d'H. truncata s'intercale entre celles d'H. saga et d'H. gracilis. Une sériation analogue s'observe dans d'autres régions, mais les relations entre l'écologie et la phylogénie sont plus complexes que chez les Plécoptères. Les Hadrenya et H. s. s. pulchella sont muscicoles. Les cours d'eau dans lequels vivent H. sternalis et H. angulosa sont plus froids que ceux où ont été trouvées H. riparia et H. subdepressa.

4.7. - Le nombre des genres d'Elminthidae augmente d'amont en aval. Les Elmis et Oulimnius sont plus muscicoles que les Esolus, Limnius, Dupophilus et Stenelmis. Les Riolus prédominent dans les régions calcaires et les Dupophilus dans les régions siliceuses. Les larves d'Elminthidae sont moins rhéophiles que les adultes.

4.8. - Comme chez les Plécoptères et les Haenydra, les espèces d'Elminthidae appartenant à un même genre occupent des positions différentes le long des cours d'eau. Quelques différences liées aux substrats ont également été mises en évidence.

4.9. - Les espèces récoltées sont comparées deux à deux, au point de vue

- de leur abondance relative dans les mousses, pour les imagos de Coléoptères (Tableau hors-texte 4.40. C),

- de leur période de vol, pour les Plécoptères (4.40. A),

- de leur position relative le long des cours d'eau, pour les deux groupes (4.40. B). L'étude de ce dernier caractère montre qu'il n'est pas possible d'établir une sériation unique, mais qu'il est nécessaire de tenir compte de l'altitude où les cours d'eau prennent leurs sources.

4.10. - On observe une bonne correspondance entre la position relative des Plécoptères dans les cours d'eau pyrénéens et le classement des mêmes espèces, ou de leurs vicariantes géographiques, dans le système des Saprobies, classement établi en Tchécoslovaquie.

Beaucoup d'espèces eurytopes ont des périodes de vol étalées. La date d'apparition des imagos des Plécoptères printaniers est d'autant plus tardive que l'altitude est plus élevée ; celle des Plécoptères automnaux ne varie pas avec ce facteur.

Quelques espèces vivant en haute altitude dans les Pyrénées centrales descendent plus bas dans les Pyrénées atlantiques. Inversement, les altitudes maximales de certaines espèces ont été observées dans la partie orientale des Pyrénées.

4.11. - Les formes muscicoles sont en général de plus petite taille que les formes pétricoles. Certaines présentent des carènes et des apophyses dorsales.

Les Protonemura estivales ont des branchies plus courtes que les espèces printanières et automnales.

Les espèces d'aval sont plus petites et plus claires que les espèces d'amont appartenant aux mêmes groupes et, chez les Isoperla et les Chloroperla, ont des soies natatoires plus développées.

4.12. - Dans un milieu ouvert comme les eaux courantes, il paraît préférable d'étudier la distribution des espèces en fonction de leurs relations phylogéniques, plutôt que d'aborder le problème sous son aspect inverse. En règle générale, les zones occupées par deux espèces voisines sont moins importantes que celles où coexistent des espèces appartenant à des lignées éloignées.

5.1. - Le peuplement des stations étudiées n'a pas montré de fluctuations annuelles importantes.

5.2. - 31 espèces de Plécoptères ont été capturées dans la station la plus riche (l'Orle à 860 m ). Dans les petits cours d'eau, le nombre d'espèces est moins élevé, mais la densité absolue est semblable. Dans le torrent situé vers 2 000 m, la densité et la diversité sont faibles, de même que pour tous les groupes d'insectes aquatiques. En basse altitude, dans le Volp à 240 m, les Plécoptères sont peu nombreux en espèces et en individus et s'opposent ainsi à la plupart des autres groupes.

Les groupements les plus étudiés ("groupements de référence") ont été rangés de telle sorte que les groupements qui possèdent en commun le plus grand nombre d'espèces se trouvent les uns à côté des autres. La série obtenue est conforme à l'altitude relative des stations, mais il n'a pas été possible d'y insérer un ruisseau de basse altitude. La liste des espèces capturées près de la Garonne en amont de Toulouse confirme qu'on ne peut disposer les groupements de Plécoptères en une série unique lorsque interviennent à la fois de fortes différences de débit et d'altitude.

5.3. - La diversité des groupements de Coléoptères est maximale en basse altitude. Elle est liée à l'importance des cours d'eau, mais cette influence ne joue que pour des débits très faibles, à la différence de ce qu'on observe chez les Plécoptères. Lorsqu'on range les groupements de référence d'après leur composition faunistique, on obtient une série conforme à l'altitude relative des stations.

Les groupements d'Elminthidae des eaux courantes d'Europe ont été rangés en séries qui diffèrent en fonction de la nature des terrains (groupements avec ou sans Riolus) et d'un facteur encore inconnu (avec ou sans Esolus). Dans chaque série, le nombre des espèces croît d'amont en aval et on observe des remplacements réguliers d'espèces les unes par les autres chez les Elmis, Esolus, Riolus et Limnius.

5.4. - La notion de succession physiographique ne fournit pas une base utilisable pour une classification écologique des cours d'eau, l'évolution physiographique se déroulant à une vitesse trop faible par rapport aux variations climatiques et à l'évolution biologique.

Si les confluents principaux peuvent constituer de bonnes limites entre les biocénoses d'un cours d'eau déterminé, la concordance entre les limites situées sur des cours d'eau différents n'a pas été établie.

Dans la région étudiée, un schéma basé sur l'importance des cours d'eau n'est applicable que dans des limites altitudinales assez étroites.

6.1. - D'est en ouest, le peuplement des Pyrénées est assez homogène et il ne reste pas de traces de spéciation géographique intrapyrénéenne dans les répartitions actuelles. La présence dans le Pays Basque de quelques Coléoptères ibériques montre qu'il s'agit d'une zone de passage et pose le problème de la limite occidentale de la chaîne.

6.2. - Pour les groupes considérés, les Pyrénées présentent des relations faunistiques plus étroites avec les régions situées au nord qu'avec les massifs de la Péninsule Ibérique. Ce phénomène est général dans le sud de l'Europe et est, au moins partiellement, compensé par la présence de nombreux endémiques.

7. - Le rôle de la concurrence entre espèces voisines est discuté dans la conclusion et il est proposé un plan d'étude des communautés d'eau courante.

Distribution and ecology of macroinvertebrates in the Opunohu River catchment (17°31'S, 149°S 50'W), Moorea, French Polynesia, were studied at eight sites, which range in altitude from 2 to 335 m, and from 0.4 to 4.0 km distance from the ocean. Taxa richness per site ranged from 16 to 28, and was higher in austral spring than austral fall ; 48 taxa were collected over all sites and included 7 species of molluscs, 6 crustaceans, 23 insects, and 6 oligochaetes. Neritid snails and atyid and palaemonid shrimp in the Opunohu have diadromous life cycles : they enter freshwater as juveniles and migrate upstream ; their larval offspring must return to the sea for growth and metamorphosis. These groups generally had larger individuals at upstream than at downstream sites. Human activities such as channeling stream flow through elevated culverts can impede normal upstream migration of diadromous species. Densities of neritid egg capsules were higher in riffle than pool habitats, exhibited seasonality, and were highest at the downstream-most site ; abundance at upstream sites also reflected local habitat conditions. Microhabitat segregation of two species of atyiid shrimp reflected their respective filter-feeding and detritus-gathering feeding mechanisms. High pH and temperatures in the poorly buffered, cascade headwaters produced high seston loads (3.4 mg/l) that mainly contained diatoms ; in downstream reaches seston concentrations were lower and contained more detritus. Some filter-feeding black fly species occured only in the headwaters. Insect taxa-richness was higher in headwater reaches while mollusc and crustacean richness was higher at sites near the ocean, which supports a tenet of the River Continuum Concept.

Ponds are an essential freshwater habitat for plants and animals, and they play a central role in maintaining high regional biodiversity. In addition, ponds have many other functions relating to education, recreation, economy, hydrology, culture and aesthetics. Despite their importance, relatively few resources are invested in pond conservation in Europe. Furthermore, the scientific basis for the management and conservation of ponds is currently weak compared to the information available for other freshwater habitats. Some national environment agencies from countries such as France, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, have recently developed elements of a national strategy for pond conservation. There is now need to strengthen and develop these initiatives and to build a common framework in order to establish a sound scientific basis for pond conservation in Europe. The European Pond Conservation Network (EPCN, www.europeanponds.org) was established at the First European Pond Workshop in Geneva, October 2004. The mission of the Network is to promote awareness, understanding and conservation of ponds in a changing European landscape. Specifically the objectives of the Network are: (1) to exchange information on pond ecology and conservation between researchers, managers and practitioners, (2) to promote understanding of pond ecology by encouraging the development and coordination of fundamental and applied research, (3) to raise the profile of ponds and guide national and supra-national policies for their protection, (4) to promote effective practical pond conservation, and (5) to disseminate information on the importance, attractiveness and conservation of ponds to the people. The "Pond Manifesto" presents the background and the motivations of the EPCN.

La prospection de 192 stations dans un même bassin des Pyrénées centrales — la rivière Neste d'Aure et ses affluents — entre 2 500 et 500 m d'altitude, a permis l'étude écologique de 108 espèces de Trichoptères.

I. — Les conditions générales (topographie, hydrologie, géologie, climat) font de la vallée d'Aure un bon exemple de vallée des Pyrénées centrales. Pour chacun des affluents étudiés sont indiqués : la topographie, l'hydrographie, les terrains traversés, la végétation et les influences humaines. Les données relatives à chaque station figurent en annexe : référence, localisation, degré d'investigation (prélèvements, nombre d'espèces et d'individus récoltés), caractères physico-chimiques.

II. — Les prélèvements ont été réalisés au filet-troubleau, sur des surfaces variant entre 0,20 et 0,30 m2 . Un facteur de correction a été introduit pour rendre les lavages de mousses comparables aux prélèvements sur substrat pierreux.

La représentation de la faune de chaque station regroupe l'ensemble des relevés effectués dans les différents habitats. Le symbole d'abondance affecté à chaque espèce rend compte du plus grand nombre de larves récoltées dans un des prélèvements de la station (fig. 5).

14 espèces ont été qualifiées de fondamentales d'après leur fréquence dans les classes d'abondance les plus élevées. Leurs affinités cénotiques, établies par la méthode du carré moyen de contingence, ont permis de déterminer divers groupements de Trichoptères dans l'ensemble de la vallée d'Aure (fig. 8 à 21). Les groupements suivants ont été retenus :

A. — Groupements des lacs de haute altitude :

1. Annitella pyrenaea.

B. — Groupements des sources et ruisseaux froids de haute altitude :

2. Melampophylax mucoreus - Apatania stylata - Synagapetus insons - Drusus rectus (sources pierreuses),

4. Synagapetus insons - Drusus rectus - Micrasema morosum - Drusus (discolor (torrents à Rhyacophila contracta et Rh. evoluta).

C. — Groupements des ruisseaux à forte amplitude thermique :

Chaque groupement est caractérisé par ses composantes spécifiques et ses composantes écologiques. A partir de "stations-types" où le groupement est bien représenté, diverses tendances apparaissent correspondant à des interférences ou à des zones de contact entre les groupements. Les communautés des différents habitats sont distingués dans les stations-types, principalement en fonction de la vitesse du courant et de la nature du substrat.

La comparaison des groupements indique :

— l'influence combinée de l'altitude et du régime thermique dans la répartition spatiale des groupements (fig. 24),

— l'importance des groupements intermédiaires (fig. 25).

Deux peuplements peuvent être distingués dans les cours d'eau de la vallée d'Aure. Le premier comprend des espèces sténothermes de haute altitude ; il est localisé dans les sources et les torrents froids du Massif de Néouvielle. Le second est composé d'espèces eurythermes; à partir des ruisseaux de basse et moyenne montagne, il remonte en altitude dans les déversoirs des lacs. Ces deux peuplements interfèrent dans les milieux intermédiaires :

— déversoirs des tourbières froides et ruisselets de la prairie subalpine en haute montagne,

— régions moyennes des ruisseaux à grande dénivellation et forte pente,

— régions des sources des ruisseaux de moyenne montagne.

Les particularités topographiques de la vallée d'Aure ne permettent pas le développement de certains groupements de moyenne altitude.

La localisation des Trichoptères dans les différents habitats d'eau courante est envisagée. Les espèces abondantes dans une station tendent à occuper les différents habitats de cette station. Les larves de plusieurs espèces, vivant en courant rapide dans les stations à températures maximales élevées, forment une partie plus importante des peuplements en courant lent ou nul lorsque les températures maximales s'abaissent. Pour les Trichoptères, la dispersion des pourcentages (σ) est élevée dans les mousses et en courant nul. Sur substrat pierreux, les valeurs de σ sont voisines dans les régions des sources pour des vitesses de courant différentes. Dans les ruisseaux de montagne (rhitron) , les valeurs de α diminuent des courants lents aux courants rapides. Ces conditions sont inversées dans la dernière station de la Neste d'Aure, influencée par la proximité de la Garonne (potamon).

L'accent est mis en conclusion sur le caractère transitoire des biocénoses benthiques et sur l'importance des régimes thermiques dans la zonation des eaux courantes.

III. — L'analyse biocénotique des espèces de haute montagne permet de dégager trois séries de noyaux d'affinité (tableau XVII). Ces noyaux se disposent d'une façon continue à l'intérieur de chaque série. Les variations sont mises en corrélation avec deux facteurs principaux : le régime thermique et la vitesse du courant (fig. 29). L'influence des variations journalières de température sur la faune de trois stations d'eau courante est indiquée pour trois ruisseaux dont les régimes thermiques sont différents. Le rôle des facteurs intrinsèques est abordé par l'étude de la distribution de cinq types morphologiques et du comportement des adultes. La localisation des noyaux d'affinité est indiquée dans les eaux de deux vallons typiques de haute altitude, différant essentiellement par leur orientation et leur mode d'alimentation.

IV. — La croissance de plusieurs espèces a été étudiée en haute et moyenne montagne. Les stades larvaires ont été déterminés par des mesures de capsule céphalique (fig. 34 A).

— La croissance de Rhyacophila occidentalis s'effectue essentiellement en automne et en hiver ; le cycle complet dure un an (fig. 35). Les jeunes larves peuvent être récoltées en courant nul ou très lent jusqu'aux stades II et III ; elles préfèrent ensuite les courants rapides (fig. 34 B). Ce changement coïncide avec l'acquisition d'un régime carnivore strict au stade III.

— Suivant les altitudes, le cycle de Rhyacophila evoluta peut durer un, deux ou trois ans (fig. 36 B, C, D). La croissance hivernale est possible en basse montagne (fig. 36 A). En altitude on constate deux ou trois arrêts de développement aux stades loeuf, III, (IV et V (fig. 37 A, B, C).

— Rhyacophila angelieri et Rhyacophila contracta présentent un cycle identique à celui de Rh. evoluta : deux ans à la station 5.4 (Rh. angelieri et Rh. contracta); trois ans à la station 5.1 (Rh. contracta).

— Rhyacophila mocsaryi est une espèce de moyenne montagne dont la croissance s'effectue essentiellement en été. Les adultes apparaissent très tôt dans l'année (fig. 38).

— Le cycle de Micrasema morosum dure deux ans en haute altitude. Deux arrêts de développement ont lieu en hiver — aux stades IV et nymphal (fig. 39 A). Les histogrammes réalisés pour une population de moyenne altitude (Espiaube) indiquent la possibilité suivant les années d'un cycle variant de un à deux ans (fig. 39 B).

— Micrasema vestitum accomplit son cycle en un an aux stations 7.2 et 7.3. On note un léger retard pour la population de la station la plus froide (fig. 40).

— Le cycle de Drusus rectus s'étend sur deux ans en haute altitude (fig. 41 A), une année en moyenne altitude (fig. 41 B).

— Pour Allogamus auricollis, les variations de taille entre deux populations de haute et de basse altitude sont étudiées pour chaque stade larvaire (fig. 42 B) et pour les adultes (fig. 42 A). Les différences de taille sont accentuées aux stades IV et V. D'après les dissections de quelques femelles, la maturation des ovaires paraît plus rapide en haute altitude (fig. 43). Le cycle de développement dure un an en haute et en basse altitude, mais les rythmes de croissance sont différents (fig. 44).

— Le développement de Limnephilus bipunctatus suit l'évolution des mares temporaires (fig. 45). L'arrêt de développement au stade oeuf correspond à l'assèchement. L'évolution varie suivant la date de remise en eau (en automne ou au printemps).

En haute altitude, la période d'enneigement correspond à des alternances d'engourdissement et d'activité ralentie. Les Trichoptères de haute montagne sont caractérisés par la possibilité de demeurer dans un état de vie ralenti à n'importe quel stade de leur cycle. L'arrêt du développement aux stades V et nymphal pour les températures élevées entraîne une égalisation des populations de basse et de haute altitude chez les espèces de la faune automnale : l'apparition des adultes n'est pas retardée par l'altitude.

L'évolution saisonnière de la faune est étudiée en deux stations de haute et moyenne montagne. A la station la plus élevée (5.4), on constate un arrêt du développement en hiver, à des stades variés suivant les espèces. La croissance des larves s'effectue essentiellement en été et en automne. A partir d'un étiage hivernal sévère, les crues de fonte des neiges provoquent chaque année une nouvelle distribution des habitats et de la faune. Le développement des larves dure un ou deux ans (fig. 46). Les débits de la station 7.3 sont plus réguliers : l'étiage hivernal est moins important, les crues de printemps affaiblies par les retenues artificielles en amont de la station. Les Trichoptères "brouteurs de substrat" dominent sur les pierres en courant lent ou modéré, Odontocerum albicorne et Sericostoma dans les milieux vaseux. La faune des pierres en courant rapide à très rapide est plus hétérogène. Les cycles de développement larvaire durent un an (fig. 46).

Les différences de condition de vie entre les deux stations sont discutées du point de vue de leur influence sur l'évolution saisonnière de la faune.

L'importance du comportement et des réactions spécifiques sur la répartition des Trichoptères de la vallée d'Aure est soulignée en conclusion.

The golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei was introduced into Argentina in 1991 and has since been spreading through the Plata and Guaíba basins at a rate of 240 km.year−1. To assess their ability to invade the Andean tributaries of the Plata Basin (Pilcomayo, Bermejo and Salado del Norte rivers), their current range was assessed and related to the abiotic parameters of sites where they were present and absent. These data were then compared with their known tolerances to identify possible barriers to invasion. Outputs suggested that three environmental parameters are barriers to invasion: salinity and river flow intermittence in different sectors of the rivers Pilcomayo and Salado del Norte, and concentration of suspended sediments in the Bermejo River and in the upper reaches of the Salado del Norte and Pilcomayo rivers. The importance of these findings is discussed in relation to using environmental data to infer the invasion possibilities and the utility of environmental data to better understand invasion patterns and processes.

Malacological investigations were carried out in 53 meadows on acid soil to identify the characteristics of habitats colonizedby lymnaeid snails. These meadows are located in three different geographical districts (Basse-Marche, Monts d'Ambazac, Plateauxde la Vienne) in the Haute-Vienne Department (central France). Lymnaea truncatula lived at the distal extremity of opendrainage furrows ; L. glabra inhabited the middle part of furrows and L. palustris lived in the central ditch. The mean area of L.truncatula habitats ranged from 2.8 to 4.8 m2 in relation to the district studied and was smaller than those of L. glabra (a meanof 3.6 to 7.2 m2 ) and L. palustris (10.3 to 19.3 m2). Mean intervals between the sites occupied by L. truncatula and L. glabraranged from 6.3 to 12.3 m ; they were greater between the sites occupied by L. glabra and L. palustris (11.6 to 15.4 m). Finally,the mean densities of L. truncatula in June ranged from 11.4 to 19.8/m2 in relation to the district studied ; those of L. glabra rangedfrom 22.6 to 27.0 snails/m2, whereas in L. palustris, they ranged from 6.3 to 8.8 snails/m2. The mean values of these first twoparameters were significantly lower in the habitats located in Monts d'Ambazac than those recorded in the two other districts. Implicationsof these results for fasciolosis control are discussed.

The composition and abundance of functional feeding groups of the macroinvertebrate communities were investigated alongthe Chubut River in the Patagonian Precordillera and Plateau, Argentina. Chubut River (>1000 km) is the largest river in the area and the hydrological regime is modified in the lower section by an artificial reservoir (Florentino Ameghino Dam). Quantitative benthic samples were collected at 13 sites in the upper, middle and lower sections of the river basin. Sites were visited four times during 2004 and physicochemical parameters, chlorophyll a and particulate organic matter (POM) were assessed. In terms of relative abundance, collector-gatherers and scrapers/grazers were the predominant groups at most sites. Shredders were not abundant in the upper sites and were practically absent at middle and lower basin sites. Collector filterers that comprised morethan 25 % of abundance at the pre-regulated site were practically absent right below the dam. POM biomass decreased significantly with distance from the source and chlorophyll a showed a marked increase below the reservoir. We conclude that although there was a distinct headwaters fauna in the Chubut River, and sequential downstream changes in species composition, most functional feeding groups (apart from shredders) were represented down the whole length of the river. Finally, the usefulness of biotic indices and metrics in relation with main environmental features of the Chubut River basin is discussed.

The rules governing the allocation of available resources to varying physiological processes are evaluated in three physiologically-based models of individual Daphnia. In laboratory experiments using a single clone, subjected to varying regimes of food deprivation, growth was found to vary inversely with food level, ceasing in the absence of food, implying that growth allocation is derived directly from food. Reproductive investment was reduced under food deprivation, ceasing at low food levels. By exposing juvenile and adult daphnia to varying food deprivation regimens during different periods within their intermoult interval, it was shown that instar durations vary as a function of body size and food availability independent of the age of the animal. For the first time, the role of variable instar duration, which critically influences physiological processes such as growth, moulting and reproduction in adult females, that has been neglected by existing Daphnia models, is explicitly incorporated in a physiological allocation model. The consequent model provides a simplified framework for modelling the consequences of food deprivation in cladocerans which has important application in population modelling and environmental risk assessment.

Rural communities in South Africa are becoming increasingly reliant on freshwater fish to supplement their dietary protein requirement. Rising costs of other protein sources, increasing rural poverty and escalating rural populations are resulting in increasing consumption of fish from contaminated river systems. The Olifants River, Limpopo Basin, Eastern South Africa, has been systemically impaired and is now one of the most polluted rivers in South Africa. We measured the concentrations of metals in fish muscle tissue from two impoundments in the Olifants River (Flag Boshielo Dam and the Phalaborwa Barrage) and conducted a human health risk assessment following Heath et al., (2004) to investigate whether consumption of Oreochromis mossambicus from these impoundments posed a risk to the health of rural communities. Our results show that metals are accumulating in the muscle tissue of O. mossambicus even though the populations appear to be healthy. No patterns were observed in the ratios of the metals accumulated in the muscle tissue of O. mossambicus at each impoundment. The human health risk assessment identified that lead, antimony and chromium at Flag Boshielo Dam and lead at the Phalaborwa Barrage were above acceptable levels for the safe consumption based on a weekly 150 g fish meal. We conclude that consuming O. mossambicus from these impoundments could pose an unacceptable risk to the health of rural communities.

A strain of Cyclotella meneghiniana was isolated from the River Danube. The optimum irradiance and temperature for growthwere determined in batch cultures. The optimum temperature for growth was 25 °C. The estimated saturated irradiance wasnear 125 µE m-2 s-1. The calculated Ik for growth and photosynthesis were 30 ± 3 and 44 ± 6 µE m-2 s-1 respectively. A continuousculture technique was used to test the growth and cell composition at the transition state between batch, nutrient sufficiency, anda low rate of nutrient supply. Algal response was characterized by high intracellular N and C with negative growth rate. At a lowdilution rate (0.06 d-1), the continuous culture theory was not followed. This critical rate is characterized by low chlorophyll-acontent per cell and may depend on the mode of nutrition.

Although habitats of hard emergent macrophyte beds, including reed beds (Phragmites australis), are very common in the littoral zones of stagnant waters in central Europe, research investigating their macroinvertebrate communities is still lacking. In this study, the spatial distribution of macroinvertebrates was studied within large reed beds in the littoral zone of a lowland fishpond (Nesyt, SE Moravia, Czech Republic). Using a hand net, horizontal line transects in the reed bed leading from the marginal area with the open water towards the shore were sampled. The results of NMDS ordination and PERMANOVA test proved that the taxonomic composition of the macroinvertebrate assemblage changed significantly along the investigated horizontal transect from the open water towards the shore, together with gradual changes in some environmental factors. The taxa diversity was found to be the highest in the areas closest to the shore. In the reed bed areas near open water, corixids, aquatic insects larvae, leeches, water mites, some naidids and tubificids, which represented free-swimming invertebrates with tracheal gill breathing, ectoparasites, gatherers/collectors and taxa preferring pelal and inorganic substrates, were more abundant compared with the interiors of reed beds. On the other side, in the shallow dense interior of reed beds close to the shore, gastropods, water slaters, some naidids and enchytraeids, aquatic beetles and dipteran larvae were characteristic taxa, which belonged especially to grazers and scrapers, shredders and invertebrates preferring phytal and POM (particulate organic matter) microhabitats. Different predators were recorded in areas near open water and near the shore. This invertebrate spatial distribution probably reflects changes in microhabitat and environmental conditions along the investigated horizontal transect. The results of this study proved that extensive reed beds serve as refuges for many groups of aquatic macroinvertebrates within lowland fishpond ecosystems.
