The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of cow genetic merit on enteric methane (CH4) emission rate. The study used a data set from 32 respiration calorimeter studies undertaken at this Institute between 1992 and 2010, with all studies involving lactating Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. Cow genetic merit was defined as either profit index (PIN) or profitable lifetime index (PLI), with these two United Kingdom genetic indexes expressing the expected improvement in profit associated with an individual cow, compared with the population average. While PIN is based solely on milk production, PLI includes milk production and a number of other functional traits including health, fertility and longevity. The data set had a large range in PIN (n=736 records, −£30 to +£63) and PLI (n=548 records, −£131 to +£184), days in milk (18 to 354), energy corrected milk yield (16.0 to 45.6 kg/day) and CH4 emission (138 to 598 g/day). The effect of cow genetic merit (PIN or PLI) was evaluated using ANOVA and linear mixed modelling techniques after removing the effects of a number of animal and diet factors. The ANOVA was undertaken by dividing each data set of PIN and PLI into three sub-groups (PIN:<£3, £3 to £15 and >£15, PLI:<£23, £23 to £67 and >£67) with these being categorised as low, medium and high genetic merit. Within the PIN and PLI data sets there was no significant differences among the three sub-groups in terms of CH4 emission per kg feed intake or per kg energy corrected milk yield, or CH4 energy (CH4-E) output as a proportion of energy intake. Linear regression using the whole PIN and PLI data sets also demonstrated that there was no significant relationship between either PIN or PLI, and CH4 emission per kg of feed intake or CH4-E output as a proportion of energy intake. These results indicate that cow genetic merit (PIN or PLI) has little effect on enteric CH4 emissions as a proportion of feed intake. Instead enteric CH4 production may mainly relate to total feed intake and dietary nutrient composition.

Mathematical models are important tools to estimate nutritional requirements and animal growth. Very few calf models generated from other countries with different feeding programs, environment and production systems have been evaluated. The objective of this paper is to evaluate two calf models: (i) the National Research Council (NRC) in 2001 and (ii) the updates published by Van Amburgh and Drackley in 2005 and inputted into Agricultural Modeling and Training Systems (AMTS, version 3.5.8). Data from 16 previous studies involving 51 diets for dairy calves under tropical conditions (n=485 calves, initial BW 37.5±4.35 kg and weaning weight of 62.0±10.16 kg) were used. The calves were fed with whole milk, milk replacer or fermented colostrum, plus starter (20.9±1.78% of CP). The accuracy of the average daily gain (ADG) prediction was evaluated by mean bias, mean square prediction error (MSPE), concordance correlation coefficient, bias correction factor (Cb), and regression between the observed and predicted values. The ADG observed from birth to weaning was 0.452±0.121 kg/day. Calves fed with whole milk had greater ADG compared with calves fed milk replacer (0.477 v. 0.379 kg/day) during the milk-feeding period. When all data were pooled (n=51 diets), predictions had a mean bias of −0.019 and 0.068 kg/day for energy-allowable gain using NRC and AMTS models, respectively. The regression equation between observed and predicted values obtained from energy of diets showed an intercept different from zero (P<0.0001) and slope that differed from unity (P<0.0001). In a second evaluation, when calves were fed only milk replacer, the energy-allowable gain from AMTS showed the lowest mean bias (0.008 kg/day) and 82.1% of the MSPE value originated from random errors. The lowest MSPE, the higher Cb value and no significant slope bias (P>0.05) indicate that the AMTS growth model resulted in accurate predictions for calves fed with milk replacer. However, within these latter two approaches, the goodness of fit (R2) was low, representing low precision. The weight gain estimated by the energy available from the diet was overestimated by 19 g/day when calculated by the NRC and underestimated by 68 g/day when calculated by AMTS. The reasons for this discrepancy need to be understood, for only then new models could be developed and parameterized to estimate animal performance in tropical conditions more accurately and precisely.

Between six and 11 twin pairs each of the breeds Braunvieh (BV), Fleckvieh (FV), Grauvieh (GV), Pinzgauer (Pi) and Friesians (Fr) were either treated uniformly or separated and fattened to veal or to yearling bull stage. The aim of the experiment was the comparison of Central European breeds and to investigate genotype × rearing system interaction both within and between breeds. Veal calves were slaughtered at about 120 to 150 kg live weight (proportionately about 0·13 of estimated mature weight of bulls) and yearling bulls at 410 to 460 kg live weight, corresponding to proportionately 0·38 of estimated mature weight. In general, the dual-purpose breeds had higher growth rates both absolute (AGR) and relative (RGR) and better food conversion ratios (FCR) than the dairy breed, Friesian, and this was true irrespective of whether correlations were made to constant age, weight, maturity (equal proportion of adult weight) or carcass fatness. However, the early-weaned Friesian calves grew fastest in the early phase of the growing period and this probably reflected their superior appetite.

Interactions between breeds and rearing system (bull v. veal) were significant for RGR and for maturity-corrected FCR which was mainly caused by shifting of the positions of BV and Pi.

The pooled genetic correlations between performance in the different fattening categories were considerably below unity. The twin-pair correlations indicated high heritabilities which are biased by contributions from dominance and maternal environment. While in data corrected to comparable maturity, AGR and RGR were highly positively correlated, their correlation became negative in agecorrected data. The correlations with FCR displayed an equivalent change with sign reversed. The correlations between wither height and heart girth with AGR were positive for age-corrected data but negative or barely positive, respectively, for data corrected to equal maturity. Again, FCR behaved similarly but with sign reversed.

The objective was to determine the effect of previous lambing date and subsequent month of mating on reproductive performance in Mule (Bluefaced Leicester × Scottish Blackface) ewes. Sixty-four ewes which had previously lambed in January (13 January (s.e. = 1 day)) and 80 ewes which had previously lambed in May (15 May (s.e. = 1 day)) were allocated equally to four mating periods (30 August to 17 September, 1 November to 19 November, 3 January to 21 January and 14 February to 4 March) in a 2 × 4 factorial design. From 20 days before and during their designated mating period, January- and May-lambing ewes were separately housed in straw-bedded pens under natural photoperiod and were given 1 kg per head per day dried grass pellets. A vasectomized ram was continuously present with each group for 17 days and was replaced by a raddled, fertility tested entire Suffolk ram at the start of the mating period. Ewes were mated at a single natural oestrus and those marked by the ram were recorded daily. Ovulation rate was measured by laparoscopy on day 6 after mating. For ewes which had previously lambed in January (16 per group), numbers by month of mating that showed oestrous behaviour, ovulated and were pregnant, respectively, were: September, 16, 15 and 12; November, 16, 15 and 14; January, 15, 15 and 10 and February, 15, 16 and 7. Mean (s.e.) ovulation rates by month of mating were 2·1 (0.16), 2·5 (0.19), 2·1 (0.09) and 2·2 (0.19) corpora lutea per ewe ovulating, and lambing rates by month of mating were 1·3 (0.25), 1·9 (0.25), 1·2 (0.24) and 0·8 (0.23) lambs per ewe to the ram. For ewes which had previously lambed in May (20 per group), numbers by month of mating that showed oestrous behaviour, ovulated and were pregnant, respectively, were: September, 13, 20 and 12; November, 20, 20 and 19; January, 20, 20 and 17 and February, 20, 20 and 13. Mean (s.e.) ovulation rates by month of mating were 2·0 (0.13), 2·3 (0.11), 2·1 (0.05) and 2·2 (0.11) corpora lutea per ewe ovulating, and lambing rates by month of mating were 1·0 (0.21), 2·1 (0.15), 1·5 (0.17) and 1·2 (0.21) lambs per ewe to the ram. Ovulation, pregnancy and lambing rates were not influenced by previous lambing date, but lambing rates were significantly (P < 0·01) reduced for ewes mated in September and February compared with November. Results demonstrate that in Mule ewes acceptable ovulation rates can be achieved throughout the period September to February but lambing rates are reduced when ewes are mated at the extremes of their natural breeding season. The main factor contributing to the reduction in lambing rates was an increase in the number of ewes failing to establish pregnancy as a consequence of ovulation without oestrous behaviour, fertilization failure and (or) total embryo loss.

1. Twenty spring-born Friesian calves, housed indoors, were divided into two groups each of 10 calves. During their first three weeks all calves were fed alike on whole milk containing 3·5% butterfat. At three weeks of age calves in one group were changed to a diet consisting of reconstituted buttermilk powder which was made up to the same energy content as the milk. Up to the 30th day intake was gradually increased to 20% of body weight; thereafter till slaughter of the calves at approximately 200 1b. live-weight both groups were fed to appetite twice daily.

2. Calves in both groups grew well and differences between groups in growth rate, and age at slaughter, food consumption and food conversion, were all statistically non-significant.

The provision of straw to pigs kept in conventional pens with concrete floor improves animal welfare, but the effects of straw on pigs’ performance are unclear. In two steps, we investigated the relationship between amount of straw provided to pigs and measures of performance in a set-up maintaining constant space allowance and controlled room temperature. From approximately 30- to 85-kg BW, pigs were housed in groups of 18 in pens (5.48 m × 2.48 m) with concrete floor (1/3 solid, 1/3 drained and 1/3 slatted). The pens were cleaned manually twice a week, and the designated amount of fresh uncut wheat straw was provided daily onto the solid part of the floor. In the first step, 48 pens were assigned to 10-, 500- or 1000-g straw per pig per day, while in the second step, 90 pens were assigned to 10-, 80-, 150-, 220-, 290-, 360-, 430- or 500-g straw per pig per day. Pigs were weighed at the start of the experimental period at approximately 30 kg and again at approximately 85-kg BW. The average daily gain increased 8.1 g (SEM 17) for every extra 100-g straw added daily (P < 0.001) resulting in 40 g higher average daily gain with 500 compared to 10-g straw per pig per day. The feed conversion ratio was not affected by the amount of straw provided, as the feed intake tended to be higher with increasing amounts of straw. Thus, between 10 and 500 g, the more straw provided, the higher the daily weight gain. As the nutritional value of straw is considered minimal, this result is likely due to improved gut health from the increasing amounts of straw ingested and increased feed intake due to increased stimulation of exploratory behaviour with increasing amounts of straw available, or a combination of these. The observed tendency for a higher feed intake supports this suggestion, but studies are needed to establish the impact of these two contributing factors.

The present work is aimed at evaluating the behaviour of Italian Heavy Draught Horse (IHDH) foals reared in semi-covered stables and fed two isoenergetic total mixed rations with different dietary protein levels (13.2% and 10.6% of CP on dry matter). The study was prompted by the restrictions for nitrate emissions in farms of the European Nitrate Directive. One suggested solution is to reduce dietary protein while maintaining normal performance and welfare, but there is a lack of literature in studies of horses. The behaviours of 20 foals of 437±60 kg of BW, aged 379±37 days and stabled in four pens by sex (S) and diet (D) were video recorded and analysed to build a suitable ethogram including 18 behaviours in six categories: ingestion, resting, maintenance, movement, social activities, other. The percentage of the daily time spent in each behavioural category and single behaviours was analysed via a single traits GLM including S, D and their interaction. Daily activity was consistent with existing literature: foals spent about 33% of the day in ingestion activities and 41% in resting, whereas social interactions constituted 8% of the time and individual maintenance <2%. Concerning diet, foals fed high protein spent more time in movement (19.62±0.73% of day v. 10.45±0.73% in low-protein (LP) foals; P⩽0.001), whereas the LP group increased resting (43.42±1.12% v. 38.02±1.12%; P⩽0.001). No stereotypies were found, and daily activity followed the typical values for draught breeds for foals in both dietary groups, a result that suggests the maintenance of well-being after dietary protein reduction. This result, together with the findings of a companion study showing no changes in growth performances of foals, showed that a reduction of CP in foal diet is reconcilable with the maintenance of performance and welfare.

In order to examine the effects of diets, with two hay to concentrate ratios and two forms of concentrates on the rumen fermentation of dry sheep and milk production of lactating ewes, three trials were conducted.

In the first trial, four wether sheep, each fitted with a rumen cannula, were used in a 4 × 4 Latin-square design, by allocating them to one of four diets with different hay to concentrate ratio and concentrate type. The diets consisted of 0·5 kg hay and 0·75 kg either starchy (HRSC) or fibrous (HRFC) concentrates, or 0·25 kg hay and 1·0 kg either starchy (LRSC) or fibrous (LRFC) concentrates. The diets were designed to provide similar intakes of energy and crude protein. Volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia concentrations, pH values and number of protozoa were determined in wether rumen fluid.

Total VFA concentration was not significantly affected by diet but acetate and n-butyrate proportions were higher (P < 0·002) on the higher forage diets and propionate higher (P < 0·002) on the lower forage diets. pH values and number of protozoa in sheep rumen fluid were unaffected by treatment, while ammonia concentration was lower (P < 0·05) on the HRFC diet.

In the second trial, 60 lactating dairy ewes were allocated to one of four diets for weeks 11 to 15 of lactation (period 1). Ewes were given food daily: 0·87 kg hay and 1·3 kg either HRFC or HRSC concentrates, or 0·4 kg hay and 1·6 kg either LRFC or LRSC concentrates. During weeks 16 to 20 of lactation (period 2), the ewes were given the same amount and type of concentrates but hay was supplied ad libitum and this period formed the third trial.

Milk yield and milk composition were affected significantly by hay to concentrate ratio with the lower hay to concentrate ratio resulting in a significant increase in milk yield, milk protein efficiency, protein content and protein and lactose yields. Milk fat content and yield were reduced. Hay intake was proportionately greater (P < 0·002) by 0·15 to 0·20 with starchy than with fibrous concentrate diets in period 2. Problems such as acidosis or ‘off-food’ periods in ewes given the low hay to concentrate ratio diets were not observed, irrespective of concentrate type.

Sixty castrated male lambs fca. 37 kg) were allocated to an initial slaughter group (no. = 12) or to one of six treatment groups (no. = 8). Chopped oaten hay (sprayed with 10 g urea per kg) was offered ad libitum with 57 gjday chopped lucerne hay. Additional supplements were 0 or 57 g/day formaldehyde-treated casein (protected casein) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) at ca. 1·45 MJ gross energy per day. The VFAs given were acetate or propionate or a mixture of these (molar ratio 4: 1). Daily food intake and weekly live-weight (LW) gain were measured and rumen fluid and blood were collected. The lambs were shorn, slaughtered and body composition was determined.

Food intake (g/kg LW) was not affected by treatments. Supplementation with protected casein increased LW gain and wool growth. Supplementation with propionate reduced LW gain, but not when given with protected casein. Plasma concentrations of urea-nitrogen and insulin were increased, and plasma somatotropin decreased in lambs given protected casein. Final body content of water, fat, protein and gross energy, adjusted to the mean fleece/digesta-free body weight of 36·5 kg, was not affected by the treatments. The partitioning of water, fat and energy between the carcass and the rest of the body was affected by the treatments. Excretion of VFAs in urine was measured in two sheep in experiment 2, and was negligible compared with the quantity of VFAs given. It is concluded that energy from salts of VFAs, in particular propionate, is used inefficiently for body-weight gain in lambs given low-protein roughage diets. The nutritional treatments had only marginal effects on the composition of body gain.

Puberty during performance test and the effect of reproductive maturity and performance on test on superovulatory response were investigated using Simmental heifers.

Three generations of Simmental heifers (no. = 110) were performance tested for beef characteristics between 23 and 49 weeks of age over 3 years successively. Embryo recoveries were performed at 52 and 61 weeks of age following the end of the performance test. The onset of puberty was observed in 26 of 30 (87%) heifers in the 3rd year. The mean age at puberty was 284·7 (s.e. 6·63) days. Age at puberty was not significantly related to daily live-weight gain (1·5 (s.e. 0·02) kg) up to the onset of puberty. Heifers experienced zero to six oestrous cycles before initiation of the first superovulatory treatments. There was a non-significant tendency (P > 0·05) for heifers that were not cyclic to produce the highest yields of viable and grade 1 embryos at the first embryo recovery.

Performance test characteristics recorded were: total food intake (1604·0 (s.e. 13·2) kg), total energy intake (1852·0 (s.e. 169·0) MJ metabolizable energy) and live-weight gain (263·9 (s.e. 2·2) kg) during test; live weight (486·5 (s.e. 31·5) kg), backfat depth (5·6 (s.e. 15) mm) and muscle score (9·6 (s.e. 0·10) units) at the end of test and estimated breeding value for the selection index (+£7·00 (s.e. 0·76)). These were used as independent variables in general linear models to study their relationship with various measures of superovulatory response. Recovery rate of ova and embryos; and the yields of viable and grade 1 embryos were not related to any aspects of performance on test.

In conclusion, superovulation and embryo recovery were affected by reproductive maturity at the time of gonadotropin treatment and these procedures may be more effective in juvenile heifers before the establishment of cyclicity. Embryo production from 12- to 15-month-old Simmental heifers following a beef performance test was not related to their performance on test.

The effect of level of barley feeding (200, 400 or 600 g fresh matter per ewe per day) on the change in body condition, between weaning and mating, of ewes offered barley straw treated with ammonia was examined in experiment 1. In experiment 2, a 2 × 2 factorial design was used with two levels of restriction of metabolizable energy in lactation (proportionately 0·85 and 0·70 of the requirements) followed by two levels of feeding of barley (250 or 500 g) in the main experimental period. In experiment 1 the intake of straw was significantly lower when 600 glday was offered, and ewes given 200 g/day barky had significantly lower gain in live weight and body condition score. In experiment 2 the level of energy intake in lactation did not affect the intakes of straw, but the current level of barley feeding did.

The pre-weaning records (birth weight, weaning weight and gain from birth to weaning) of 291 male and female lambs and the post-weaning records (body weight, feedlot gain and food conversion) of 136 male lambs were used to study relationships between different traits. The lambs were derived from three fat-tailed Iranian sheep breeds (Karakul, Mehraban and Naeini) and their crosses with Corriedale and Targhee rams. All lambs were weaned at 75 + 5 days of age and the males were fed in a feedlot for 100 days after weaning. Feedlot measurements were taken at 20-day intervals.

Weaning weight and pre-weaning average daily gain showed positive and significant associations with birth weight. Birth weight, weaning weight and gain from birth to weaning were positively associated with body weight at subsequent ages in feedlot as well as with final weight (P<0·01). Birth weight, weaning weight and pre-weaning average daily gain were positively and significantly associated with total feedlot gain.

Of the different traits, total gain during the first 20 days in feedlot (adjust period) had the lowest and total gain during the second 20 days had the highest association with total feedlot daily gain. There was no evidence that the heavier lambs at weaning and those showing high growth rate before weaning, were more efficient in the feedlot. Gain during the second 20-day period in the feedlot had a significant negative association with the total food conversion (unit food/unit gain) and therefore was a good predictor for food conversion.

When the feedlot period was divided into two 40-day periods, it was found that gain during both had a significant negative association with the corresponding food conversion. A similar association was observed between total feedlot gain and food conversion, indicating that the rate and efficiency of gain improved simultaneously.

The effects of age atfirstcalving (2 v. 3 years) and the winter feeding management as yearlings (roughages v. roughages supplemented with meal) on conception rate, calving performance (survival and weights) and lifetime production were studied on 76 beef Shorthorn cows bora from 1956 to 1958 at the Lennoxville Research Station. Conception rates averaged 89 %, and were not influenced by treatments. Calf mortality from birth to weaning was 1·5 and 0·6% higher among the calves out of the cows which had calved first at 2 years old and cows not supplemented, respectively, but the differences were not significant. Calves born to cows calving first at 2 years were 0·8 and 7·7 kg (P>0·05) lighter at birth and weaning respectively than those born to cows calving first at 3 years of age. The effect of feeding regime of the cows as yearlings on the weights of calves at birth and at weaning was non-significant.

In cows calving annually up to 8 years of age in this trial the lifetime production of those calvingfirstat 2 years of age was greater by 40 kg than of those calving first at 3 years of age, although the advantage was greater in earlier years.

The variable net energy system for ruminants was developed to allow rations to be formulated in an additive manner. It is demonstrated that the variable net energy system is based on approximations which can cause errors in ration formulation. The extent of these errors is examined for cattle rations, and it is shown that the errors can be significant.

Gossypol ﹛2,2'-bi(8-Formyl-l,6,7 trihydroxy-5-isopropyl-3-methyl naphthalene)﹜ is a toxic polyphenolic factor indigenous to the cotton plant. Concentrations of free gossypol contained in such feed stuffs as whole cottonseed (WCS) vary considerably. WCS is fed widely to animals. Free gossypol is extractable with aceton-water (70:30) and is toxic to monogastric animals. Bound gossypol has been considered relatively non-toxic. Calhoun et al (1991) has demonstrated there was extensive binding of free gossypol in ruminant digestive system. But they did not support the suggestion that bound gossypol is released during digestion in the small intestine. The present experiment examined the effect of gossypol on the rumen microbial degradation of grass hay (GH) under CBC. In sacco rumen digestion was also conducted to examine DM, CP and ADF digestibilities of grass hay and whole cottonseed at 48 h.

Variation in litter size in sheep is essentially attributable to variation in ovulation rate and embryo survival. Genetic variation in litter size, both among and within breeds, is largely attributable to variation in ovulation rate. While there is evidence for genetic differences among breeds in embryo survival the contribution of this component to within breed variation appears to be minor (Hanrahan, 1982). The impact of selection based on litter size on its component traits should reflect the relative contribution of these components to within breed variation. Data from two lines of Galway sheep, a Control line and one selected for increased prolificacy (Hanrahan and Timon, 1978), have been used to provide evidence on this point.

Details relating to the selection experiment which provided the data for the present study are in Hanrahan (1984). Briefly a flock of Galway sheep was assembled from industry sources (both pedigree and non-pedigree) between 1963 and 1965.

Under this very broad title we have selected three aspects of current and recent work which have a bearing on our understanding of the interpretation of findings dealing with muscle-weight distribution. The first is a justification of the anatomical approach, the second a confirmation of, and elaboration on, some earlier work, and the third a suggestion for some future thinking.

Results are presented of an investigation involving 328 pigs on 7 farms in East Anglia, on the effect of oxytetracycline (10 g./ton), oleandomycin (2·5 g./ton) and oxytetracycline (10 g./ton) plus oleandomycin (2·5 g./ton), on the live-weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion efficiency of pigs from weaning to slaughter at approximately 260 lb. live-weight. Effects on number of days from weaning to slaughter and carcass characteristics are also given.

Both antibiotics gave significant improvements in daily live-weight gain (5·4% for OTC and 4·0% for OM) and feed conversion efficiency (3·9% for OTC and 2·3% for OM). There was a significant negative interaction between the antibiotics on live-weight gain from weaning to slaughter.

The average number of days from weaning to slaughter was significantly reduced by both antibiotics (5·8 days for OTC and 5·4 days for OM) and there was a significant interaction between antibiotics.

Feed conversion efficiency for all pigs was significantly better on those farms where antibiotics had not previously been used but the antibiotic treatment effects were the same in both categories of farm studied.

In animals, new autosomal recessive genetic diseases (ARGD) arise all the time due to the regular, random mutations that occur during meiosis. In order to reduce the effect of any damaging new variant, it is necessary to find its cause. To evaluate the best way of doing this, 34 papers which found the exact location of a new genetic disease in livestock were reviewed and found to require at least two stages. In the initial stage the commonly used χ2 method, applied in a case-control association analysis with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-chip data, was found to have limitations and was almost always used in conjunction with a second method to locate the target region on the genome containing the variant. The commonly used methods had their drawbacks; so a new method was devised based on long runs of homozygosity, a common feature of new ARGD. This ‘autozygosity by difference’ method was found to be as good as, or better than, all the reviewed methods tested based on its ability to unambiguously find the shortest known target region in an already analysed data set. Mean target region length was found to be 4.6 megabases in the published reports. Success did not depend on the size of commercial SNP-chip used, and studies with as few as three cases and four controls were large enough to find the target region. The final stage relied on either sequencing the candidate genes found in the target region or using whole genome sequencing (WGS) on a small number of cases. Sometimes this latter method was used in conjunction with WGS on a number of control animals or resources such as the 1000 bull genomes data. Calculations showed that, in cattle, less than 15 animals would be needed in order to locate the new variant when using WGS data. This could be any combination of cases plus parents or other unrelated animals in the breed. Using WGS data, it would be necessary to search the three billion bases of the cattle genome for base positions which were homozygous for the same allele in all cases and heterozygous for that allele in parents, or not containing that homozygote in unrelated controls. This site could be confirmed on other healthy animals using much cheaper methods, and then a genetic test could be devised for that variant in order to screen the whole population and to devise a breeding programme to eliminate the disorder from the population.

Vorderwald cattle are a regional cattle breed from the Black Forest in south western Germany. In recent decades, commercial breeds have been introgressed to upgrade the breed in performance traits. On one hand, native genetic diversity of the breed should be conserved. On the other hand, moderate rates of genetic gain are needed to satisfy breeders to keep the breed. These goals are antagonistic, since the native proportion of the gene pool is negatively correlated to performance traits and the carriers of introgressed alleles are less related to the population. Thus, a standard Optimum Contribution Selection (OCS) approach would lead to reinforced selection on migrant contributions (MC). Our objective was the development of strategies for practical implementation of an OCS approach to manage the MC and native genetic diversity of regional breeds. Additionally, we examined the organisational efforts and the financial impacts on the breeding scheme of Vorderwald cattle. We chose the advanced Optimum Contribution Selection (aOCS) to manage the breed in stochastic simulations based on real pedigree data. In addition to standard OCS approaches, aOCS facilitates the management of the MC and the rate of inbreeding at native alleles. We examined two aOCS strategies. Both strategies maximised genetic gain, while strategy (I) conserved the MC in the breeding population and strategy (II) reduced the MC at a predefined annual rate. These two approaches were combined with one of three flows of replacement of sires (FoR strategies). Additionally, we compared breeding costs to clarify about the financial impact of implementing aOCS in a young sire breeding scheme. According to our results, conserving the MC in the population led to significantly (P < 0.01) higher genetic gain (1.16 ± 0.13 points/year) than reducing the MC (0.88 ± 0.10 points/year). In simulation scenarios that conserved the MC, the final value of MC was 57.6% ± 0.004, while being constraint to 58.2%. However, reducing the MC is only partially feasible based on pedigree data. Additionally, this study proves that the classical rate of inbreeding can be managed by constraining only the rate of inbreeding at native alleles within the aOCS approach. The financial comparison of the different breeding schemes proved the feasibility of implementing aOCS in Vorderwald cattle. Implementing the modelled breeding scheme would reduce costs by 1.1% compared with the actual scheme. Reduced costs were underpinned by additional genetic gain in superior simulation scenarios compared to expected genetic gain in reality (+4.85%).
