Summary
The three maps presented below show the location of the settlements mentioned in the manuscripts, and the Ukrainian dialects used in northern and western Ukraine. The cities and towns inhabited by Karaims are presented in Map 1. The place names are provided in Russian and German (i.e. in the languages of the local administration at the end of the 19th century). The English translation is in brackets. Map 2 shows the villages and farmsteads referred to in the texts. Their names are given in Polish. Their present-day Ukrainian equivalents are, in alphabetical order:. We could not determine the Ukrainian name of the farmstead Niemieckie. To identify the Karaim place names we made use of the maps prepared by the Polish Military Institute of Geography (Wojskowy Instytut Geograficzny; existed in the years 1919–1949), and Mardkowicz (1933c).
