Summary
In the previous four chapters, we have seen how animal imagery in vernacular manuscripts facilitated learning moral precepts and introduced the young to the ways in which humans may act in specific circumstances. The three chapters that follow are about scientific knowledge, starting here with mathematics, and continuing in the last two chapters with cosmology, navigation, and geography. In this chapter, I explore how illustrations in libri d’abbaco helped to instil knowledge of arithmetic and geometry by introducing references to the human body, pleasurable situations, formal analogies, and metaphorical associations.
