Published online by Cambridge University Press: 15 September 2022
Summary
Part Two of the book explores the DHSS–SSRC Transmitted Deprivation Research Programme. Chapter Three traces the early discussions between the DHSS and the SSRC; the conceptual difficulties faced by the Joint Working Party; the seminar ‘Approaches to research on transmitted deprivation’; the Rutter and Madge literature review; the background to the launch of the Programme; and the attitude of the Labour government. Chapter Four turns to early attempts to commission research; the stance of the DHSS; the applications that were received; research projects in progress; and the perspective offered by the Royal Commission on the Distribution of Income and Wealth (RCDIW). Chapter Five looks at the final years of the Programme; attempts at evaluation; the attitude of the DHSS; efforts to compare projects and the drafting of the final report; and the way that the results of the Research Programme were received. Chapter Six then turns to the broader outlook of social scientists on the Research Programme, exploring this through the work of Harriett Wilson, Adrian Sinfield, and Peter Townsend.
