The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India, over a period from the middle ages to the late eighteenth century. The 100-volume paperback set includes all the books in the first series. Volumes are also available separately and as part of smaller sets.

The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This 1873 volume was the second on the history of Peru to be translated and edited by Clements R. Markham, Secretary of the Society. It contains four manuscript accounts of the rites and laws of the Incas which throw light on many aspects of Inca and pre-Inca society. All were written by people who had lived and worked in Peru in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century and had access to indigenous sources and traditions. The book includes a contextualising introduction and several indexes.

This volume, first published in 1866, is the second of two compilations edited by Colonel Henry Yule on contacts with China before the discovery of sea routes to the east. It contains extracts from the work of Rashiduddin (1247–1318) describing China during the Mongol rule, Ibn Batuta's account of travel in Bengal and China in the fourteenth century, and a record of the journey of the Portuguese Jesuit Benedict Goës from Agra to Cathay (1602–1607).

This 1868 volume contains the first English translation of Hernán Cortés' 1526 report to Emperor Charles V on his expedition from Mexico to Honduras to subdue the rebellion in the Spanish colony which had been founded there. The colony was used to supply native workers for the Spanish Caribbean plantations, and was a recurring source of trouble for its overlords. The early years of Spanish colonisation in Central and South America were marked by power-struggles between the Conquistadors themselves, as this account shows.

This 1874 volume contains an account of the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1519–1522 by Antonio Pigafetta, a Venetian member of Magellan's expedition. It also contains Pigafetta's treatise on navigation, and other material relating to Magellan's voyage, including log-books, records by the pilot and others, and details of the crew and the cost of the fleet. Pigafetta vividly recorded the geography, climate, flora, fauna and the inhabitants of the places that the expedition visited, as well as Magellan's death in the Philippines.

First published in English in 1874, this book contains Hans Stade's autobiographical account of his capture by the indigenous Brazillian Tupinamba people in 1554, and his description of their customs. Stade was held prisoner for a year, and according to his sensational report he witnessed many acts of cannibalism and was offered roasted human flesh by the chief of a Tupinamba village. The nineteenth-century editor added a preface describing the area of Brazil in question, where he himself had spent three years of 'exile'.

The Canary Islands have been known to European countries since the Roman era. In 1402, the kingdom of Castile sent an expeditionary force, led by French explorers Jean de Béthencourt (1362–1425) and Gadifer de la Salle (1340–1415), to conquer the islands. This volume, first published in English in 1872, contains a contemporary account of the conquest written by Pierre Bontier and Jean Le Verrier, both members of the expedition; it contains valuable details of the indigenous inhabitants of the islands.

He was later released by Pope Leo X and enjoyed papal patronage until he left Rome in 1527. This work describes the region of north Africa known as the Maghreb and was considered the most authoritative account of the cultures, religions and politics of this region until the start of European exploration in the nineteenth century. Volume 1 contains a general description of north Africa.

This 1866 volume contains an English translation of a Spanish manuscript version of a document originally written in Portuguese about 1514. The supposed author, Duarte Barbosa, who may have been a relative of Magellan, is said to have spent sixteen years exploring the Indian Ocean. The complex history of this manuscript narrative is given in detail in the translator's preface, and the book has explanatory notes and an index.

This volume, first published in 1880, translates the first detailed description of the geography and indigenous culture of South America, written by Joseph de Acosta (1540–1600) and published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was one of the first explorers to record and analyse the geophysical phenomena of the 'New World' and attempt to explain them scientifically. Volume 2 contains Books 5–7 of Acosta's work, describing the life of the indigenous population and including a brief history of the end of the Inca empire.

This volume, first published in 1877, contains four contemporary accounts of the voyages of Sir James Lancaster (c. 1555–1618) between 1591 and 1600 together with the journal of Captain John Knight from his 1606 voyage to discover the 'North-West Passage'. Sir James Lancaster was one of the leading traders and explorers of the Elizabethan era, whose first voyage to India in 1591 was instrumental in establishing the East India Company in 1600.

This volume, published in 1857, contains Girolamo Benzoni's History of the New World, originally published in Venice in 1565. The book is not only a history of the New World since Columbus' discovery but an account of what Benzoni himself saw, when 'being like many others anxious to see the world, and hearing of those countries of the Indians, recently found, called by everybody the New World, I determined to go there'. It includes severe criticism of the Spanish colonists' treatment of the indigenous inhabitants.

This 1881 volume contains accounts by William Baffin (1584–1622) and others of Baffin's voyages exploring the coasts of Greenland and Spitsbergen, and his search for the North-West Passage. Although he did not find a route east, he got considerably further north than previous navigators, and provided much useful information on the conditions and natural resources of the area. His meticulous chart making and record keeping, and his use of lunar observations to calculate longitude, were groundbreaking and remarkably accurate, as later explorers found.

Volumes 66 and 67 of the series, edited by E. M Thompson and first published in 1883, contain the bulk of the diary of Richard Cocks (c.1565–1624), supplemented by a selection of letters. Cocks was the head of a trading post established in Japan by the British East India Company from its foundation in 1613 until 1622, when it went out of business. His diary describes Japanese society and culture in the early seventeenth century, as well as the activities of British merchants there.

This book contains three accounts of Dutch voyages in search of a north-eastern passage to China, undertaken in the 1590s. (When this Hakluyt edition was published in 1853, continuing anxiety about the fate of Sir John Franklin's expedition made any accounts of Arctic exploration extremely topical.) The Dutch were not successful in establishing a north-east passage; but the stories of the expeditions and of the courage and endurance of the men who took part in them make for fascinating reading.

This volume contains an English translation of the extraordinary story of Johann Schiltberger (1381–?1440), who was captured in battle as a teenager and enslaved by Bayezid I. On the latter's defeat by Timur (Tamburlane) in 1402, Schiltberger fell into the hands of the legendary Scourge of God, and in his service and that of his sons, he travelled to Armenia, Georgia and other Caucasian territories, down the river Volga, to Siberia and to the Crimea, eventually escaping and returning to his home in 1427.

This volume, first published in 1866, is the first of two compilations edited by Colonel Henry Yule on contacts with China before the discovery of sea routes to the east. Yule's detailed introductory essay surveys the history of European contacts with the east, beginning with the Greek geographers and going up to the thirteenth century. He then presents the narratives of the Franciscan Odoric of Pordenone and other missionary friars in the fourteenth century.

This 1882 volume contains a history of the early governors of Bermuda. The work is anonymous, although the editor suggests that the author might be Captain John Smith, governor of Virginia. First settled in 1612, Bermuda became an important plantation colony after the failure of the first two English colonies in Virginia. This edition provides a vivid description of the social conditions and organisation on Bermuda from the founding of the colony.

Ruy González de Clavijo was sent as an ambassador from Henry III of Castile to the court of Timour (Tamerlane) at Samarkand in 1403. This 1859 book contains a translated account of his journey, from Cadiz to Constantinople, across the Black Sea and then overland from Trebizond to Samarkand. It describes in detail court life in Timour's capital, and tells of the return of the embassy to Spain in 1406. It also provides an introductory note on the text and a brief life of Timour.
