Many people can continue to work with mild cognitive impairment and sometimes even with dementia. This will depend on the requirements of the job, and the worker with cognitive impairment may need accommodation to succeed. Remarkably, there has been relatively little research on this topic.

Moralist, libertarian and relativist ethical positions concerning suicide and its prevention are presented in order to clarify premises upon which ethical issues in suicide research may be resolved. Ethical concerns are differentiated from legal considerations and the implications of the vulnerability of suicidology research participants are discussed. Specific issues arise in design, choice of participants, interpretation, diffusion of results and evaluative research. These include: experimental methodologies, obtaining informed consent, deception and disclosure, studying innovative and unproven interventions, special considerations for research with indigenous participants, unknown consequences of participation, rescue criteria, disclosure of information to third parties, research with prisoners and other special populations, risks in publicising results and measuring the value of human life. Digital technologies and artificial intelligence pose new challenges in risk prediction and assuring equity. When specific legal obligations are lacking, ethical premises concerning the acceptability of suicide and obligations to intervene may influence research protocols.

Edward Lane’s view of the northern Delta, first drafted in 1829, describes a desolate, marginal landscape – difficult to get to and lacking in reasons to do so. This view has remained largely unchallenged by Egyptologists for a long time. This chapter puts the north of Egypt at its centre and discusses in particular when and how this region was used. First, we discuss the landscapes of the northern Delta, their diachronic development and the geographic work investigating this part of Egypt. Second, there is an overview of the state of archaeological research in this region. The reasons for the scientific lack of interest for this region in Egyptology will be addressed. Next, we introduce the historiographical hypothesis, which suggests that under the Ptolemies the northern Delta was an area of land reclamation, comparable to what was achieved in the Faiyum. A case study is presented of a region in the central northwestern Delta, which was investigated in a multidisciplinary combination of archaeological surveys, geophysical work on the ground and analysis of remote sensing data. Based on the preliminary results, a reconstruction of the ancient landscape and settlement history is proposed, and the historiographical hypothesis refuted.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is essential for nuclear disarmament and world peace. This chapter compares three dispute-settling mechanisms in the NPT legal complex using the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) as an example: political measures, non-compliance mechanisms (NCMs), and international courts and tribunals (ICTs). It evaluates the value of each mechanism to ensure Iran’s compliance with its commitments. The discussion includes NCMs like the JCPOA and the UN Security Council regimes and ICT proceedings like ICJ (International Court of Justice) and CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union). Fact-finding processes at the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) are also emphasized. Finally, the relevance of these models for climate change, environmental protection, and creating a Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone is discussed.

The introduction explains the purpose of this book and situates this book in the relevant literature. It discusses the meaning of securitization as used in this book, and it introduces Just Securitization Theory on which the theory of the moral duty to secure developed in this book builds. It also discusses the methods employed and methodology informing this work. Finally, it provides a chapter overview.

The chapter reflects on the tension that the author, Sindiso Mnisi Weeks, felt when other scholars identified her too closely with her study participants, who like her are Black South Africans. Their shared background seemed to taint or decrease her scholarly credibility, she writes. While this perspective of being a young African woman studying other young African women gives her some insider status, it also shapes how other academics see her, how study participants see her, and how she has come to see herself. Mnisi Weeks is a scholar of gender, Indigenous rights, and constitutionalism in South Africa, as well as race in the United States. However, her marginalized identity in the law sapped her authority in the centers of patriarchal power where the law resides – both in the communities she has studied and in the academy “whose default representative is a white, middle-aged, European and/or American male locked in a single discipline.”

Over the last 10 years or so, there have been an increasing number of studies that generally agree that people who regularly consume a plant-based, Mediterranean-style diet, are less likely to get Alzheimer’s dementia than those who do not. These studies have found nearly the same results in populations from around the world including the USA, Japan, Australia, Greece, and other European countries. The contents of the diets, age of participants, and extent of benefit may differ from study to study, but overall, those participants who follow a Mediterranean-style diet or one of the variants have between 35–50% less chance of getting Alzheimer’s or, in some studies, all-cause dementia.

Chapter 3 demonstrates how the mathematics of turning Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression inside out can be generalized to Generalized Linear Models (GLM) including logistic, Poisson, negative binomial, random intercept, and fixed effects models.

In this first chapter we will consider what we mean by a team and how we can work with others using some theoretical models. We will discover what these models look like in practice and what steps we can take to implement them for effective outcomes.

Defining teams

As school librarians we may belong to a variety of teams, including:

Even if we are a solo librarian in our school, it is important for us to be part of a team for several reasons. Being part of a team allows us to collaborate with other educators and professionals to improve student learning and support the overall mission of the school. Team working can provide opportunities for professional development, such as learning new skills and best practices from colleagues. When we work alone, it can be very daunting and team membership can provide emotional and practical support, which can be especially valuable in a challenging work environment. Working with others helps us to make better decisions as it allows us to share and discuss different perspectives, ideas and experiences which aid making a more informed decision. Budgets are often tight in schools, but as part of a team, we can maybe leverage the resources of the subject departments and the library to provide a more comprehensive and effective service to students and teachers.
