Mental Imagery is a focus for design cognition research, with most research focusing on visual mental imagery, it has been highlighted that mental imagery encompasses more aspects than visual, including emotion known as multimodal mental imagery. So as researchers and educators we need to understand the cognitive process and how to best stimulate it. This paper looks at design students use of visual and emotional mental imagery and its impact on their ability to produce creative outcomes during the ideation stage of the design process.

Interdisciplinary transition innovation, management, and engineering (InTIME) Design has been developed to overcome sustainability transition challenges in complex systems. The intersections of InTIME Design with a range of reported design for sustainability (DfS) approaches were analysed. Results demonstrate similar core principles across DfS approaches. InTIME Design accomplishes convergence of the studied approaches, and organises the DfS approaches into workflow phases, adds a complimentary wicked problem definition, and deploys systems engineering problem solving.

Este trabajo presenta una aproximación comparativa a las lógicas visuales de figurinas, vasijas efigie, sonajeras y colgantes, en su mayoría de cerámica, que proliferaron en el septentrión venezolano a partir de aproximadamente el primer milenio aC hasta la llegada de los europeos al continente americano. Se comparan transversalmente diversas iconografías halladas en el noroccidente del país, la región andina, los llanos, la región norcentral y el bajo Orinoco, partiendo de los elementos compositivos que articulan las figuras. Estas se componen de una base antropomorfa (combinación de tronco, piernas, brazos, cabeza, etcétera), que también puede conjugarse con elementos zoomorfos, los cuales podrían hacer referencia a entidades no-humanas o a procesos de transformación chamánica. Nos enfocaremos en la asociación de algunos elementos compositivos con la denotación sexual de las iconografías. Estas comparaciones nos permiten reconocer persistencias y concomitancias a través de grandes lapsos temporales y distancias geográficas, y contribuir a desmontar algunas preconcepciones que consideramos restrictivas respecto de los significados asociados a manifestaciones visuales femeninas.

An additional distant wall is known to highly alter the jetting scenarios of wall-proximal bubbles. Here, we combine high-speed photography and axisymmetric volume of fluid (VoF) simulations to quantitatively describe its role in enhancing the micro-jet dynamics within the directed jet regime (Zeng et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 896, 2020, A28). Upon a favourable agreement on the bubble and micro-jet dynamics, both experimental and simulation results indicate that the micro-jet velocity increases dramatically as $\eta$ decreases, where $\eta =H/R_{max}$ is the distance between two walls $H$ normalized by the maximum bubble radius $R_{max}$. The mechanism is related to the collapsing flow, which is constrained by the distant wall into a reverse stagnation-point flow that builds up pressure near the bubble's top surface and accelerates it into micro-jets. We further derive an equation expressing the micro-jet velocity $U_{jet}=87.94\gamma ^{0.5}(1+(1/3)(\eta -\lambda ^{1.2})^{-2})$, where ${\gamma =d/R_{max}}$ is the stand-off distance to the proximal wall with $d$ the distance between the initial bubble centre and the wall, $\lambda =R_{y,m}/R_{max}$ with $R_{y,m}$ the distance between the top surface and the proximal wall at the bubble's maximum expansion. Viscosity has a minimal impact on the jet velocity for small $\gamma$, where the pressure buildup is predominantly influenced by geometry.

Supporting product developers in innovating is an important task of design research. An invention and a valid need situation described through a product profile are necessary elements of innovation. But how can we derive recommendations on how to develop “innovative” products if the success of a product can only be measured retrospectively? Retrospective case studies are one approach to investigate relationships between context factors, variations in systems and product profiles, and innovation success. To investigate these, we use product profiles in case studies across system generations.

This paper outlines the evolution of decision-making spaces through selected instantiations, analyzing the role of design in their utility and identifying preliminary patterns in spatial layout. It builds on the combination of two research fields: A) Decision support systems and B) Creative Spaces. The paper aims to take a first step towards combining these two existing research fields by focusing on the spatial design aspects that foster the convergent aspect of creativity and to provide guidance for further research on the design of decision-making spaces.

Artificial Intelligence-based Computer Vision models (AI-CV models) for object detection can support various applications over the entire lifecycle of machines and plants such as monitoring or maintenance tasks. Despite ongoing research on using engineering data to synthesize training data for AI-CV model development, there is a lack of process guidelines for the creation of such data. This paper proposes a synthetic training data creation process tailored to the particularities of an engineering context addressing challenges such as the domain gap and methods like domain randomization.

In recent years, the importance of design has been pointed out as a source of competitive advantage. However, creating a great design also increases the risk of copy products being created. In this study, we used an approach based on visual information and conducted an international comparative judgment survey of elements considered to be similar within products.
