The duration of imazaquin soil activity on corn, grain sorghum, rice, and cotton was studied from 1988 to 1990. Imazaquin applied at 0.035, 0.07, 0.14 (1× rate), and 0.28 kg ai ha−1 was incorporated into the soil, and rotational crops were planted at various times after application. Initial crop visual injury was directly related to imazaquin application rate. Cotton was most susceptible, followed by corn, grain sorghum, and rice. The carryover of imazaquin from soybeans to cotton, grain sorghum, and wheat was studied in separate experiments in Arkansas in 1987 to 1989. Wheat planted in the fall following soybean harvest was not affected by imazaquin residues. Grain sorghum planted the following spring was injured (16–35%), but there was no yield reduction. Cotton recovered from early injury (< 35%) in one year and did not recover from severe injury (> 50%) in the other, resulting in yield reduction.

Nicosulfuron (50 and 100 g ai ha−1), primisulfuron (40 and 80 g ai ha−1), imazethapyr (70 and 140 g ai ha-1), and DPX-PE350 (100 and 200 g ai ha-1) injury to corn, cotton, grain sorghum, rice, and soybean was evaluated at Fayetteville, AR, during 1989-90 and 1990-91. The crops were planted 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 14 or 16, and 52 wk after herbicide application. Visible injury to all crops declined as the time interval increased. No visible injury was observed to any crop planted at least 14 wk after nicosulfuron or primisulfuron application, or 52 wk after DPX-PE350 application. Imazethapyr injured all crops except soybean at the 52-wk interval in 1990 but not in 1989.

Fenoxaprop, fluazifop/fluazifop-P, haloxyfop, and quizalofop at 0.14 kg ai ha−1 and sethoxydim at 0.28 kg ai ha−1 were applied broadcast over-the-top in spray volumes of 94 and 374 L ha−1, each at 138 and 345 kPa, to control johnsongrass in soybeans over a 5-yr period. The two spray volumes provided equal control, but control was better when treatments were applied at 345 kPa than at 138 kPa. There were no significant interactions among herbicides, spray volumes, or spray pressures. Most of the spray was deposited on the upper surface of the plant canopy. Less than 10% of the herbicide spray applied penetrated into the canopy onto water-sensitive spray cards located 10, 20, 30, or 40 cm above the ground.

Carryover potential of imazaquin (0.14 kg ai ha−1), chlorimuron plus metribuzin (0.06 + 0.36 kg ha−1), and fomesafen (0.28 kg ha−1) to snap bean, watermelon, cucumber, mustard, and sunflower was evaluated in Arkansas in 1987 to 1989. Crops were direct-seeded into treated plots at various times after application. Imazaquin and chlorimuron plus metribuzin injured sunflower, watermelon, cucumber, and mustard when planted 16 wk following application in one of two years. Fomesafen injured all crops initially but did not injure snap bean, sunflower, watermelon, and cucumber planted 16 wk after application. In experiments in which herbicides were applied to soybean, fall-planted spinach and mustard were injured in one of two years.

Field experiments were conducted in 1986 and 1987 to determine the effects of shoot and root interference of common cocklebur and soybean. Plants were grown in porous membrane envelopes. Common cocklebur plants had a longer vegetative growth period than soybean and were twice as tall as soybean at maturity. Soybean root and shoot dry weight and seed yield were reduced by shoot and whole plant (root and shoot) interference of common cocklebur, with whole plant interference giving the greatest reduction. Common cocklebur growth was affected little by soybean interference. Common cocklebur shoot interference alone reduced total soybean seed weight by 48%, the amount caused by common cocklebur whole plant interference.

Experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and growth chamber to evaluate competitive mechanisms of soybean and common cocklebur during seedling growth. Soybean was approximately 1.5 to 2 times taller and was more competitive aboveground than common cocklebur during the first few weeks of growth. Common cocklebur had an approximate 20 to 50% finer root system and was more competitive belowground than soybean during early growth.

Field studies determined flowering pattern, seed production, and somatic polymorphism of pitted morningglory, common cocklebur, and sicklepod under interspecific and no interference with soybean. Flowering patterns differed between years but were similar under both interferences. Interspecific interference reduced flower and seed numbers 85 to 99%. Rainfall had little effect on flowering, but photoperiod and temperature responses were evident for all weed species. The production equations for seed number per plant from dry weight were quadratic for pitted morningglory and common cocklebur but linear for sicklepod. All species showed somatic polymorphism; however, differences in seed germination and viability were not consistent between years.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate competitive effects of johnsongrass and sicklepod on growth and yield of irrigated and nonirrigated soybeans. Johnsongrass reduced soybean growth early in the growing season. Sicklepod was competitive all season, but competitiveness was greatest during the soybean reproductive stage. Soybean yields were reduced 31% by sicklepod, 14% by johnsongrass, and 36% by both weeds growing together. Nonirrigated soybeans yielded less than irrigated, but percent yield reductions were similar. Johnsongrass dry matter production and seed yield were reduced more than sicklepod by soybean interference. Soybean and sicklepod interference reduced johnsongrass seed production 73 to 95%. Johnsongrass produced 245 to 1238 seeds per plant when interfering with soybeans and sicklepod. Sicklepod seeds per plant were reduced 6 to 31% by johnsongrass interference and 47 to 75% by soybeans and soybeans plus johnsongrass.
