  • Summary

    This chapter explores the ways in which religion, spirituality, and romance intersect in Black American same-gender-loving (SGL) men’s lives. Specifically, the author reviewed published scholarly literature on these topics. This review is followed by a critical analysis of the links between religion, spirituality, and romantic relationships and sexual experiences. This author explored the ways in which religion and spirituality influence the development, maintenance, dynamics, and quality of Black American SGL men’s romantic and sexual relationships. Then the author describes strategies, based on the reviewed literature and Afrocentric psychology theory, to help clinicians better assess the interplay of religion, spirituality, and romance. Clinical methods to treat sexual and psychological problems related to these factors are also explored. The chapter culminates with recommendations for future clinical research in this area.

  • Summary

    In recent years, LGBTQ rights have scored a number of high-profile legislative and judicial successes around the world, including the legal recognition of same-sex relationships and non-binary gender identities. However, the advancement of LGBTQ rights still faces significant obstacles in many jurisdictions, even when it comes to basic issues such as the decriminalization of homosexual relations. This chapter focuses on the case of Singapore to examine the politics of LGBTQ rights, and, in particular, the ways in which activists interpret and respond to challenging structural conditions. Based on the author’s fieldwork, and written from both socio-legal and constitutional law perspectives, the chapter analyzes why LGBTQ rights activists who had long avoided rights litigation changed their minds and brought a constitutional challenge against the criminalization of same-sex relations, the outcomes of the litigation campaign, and the future of LGBTQ rights in Singapore.

  • This article examines the evolving way the ‘family’ and ‘family life’ have been understood in international and regional human rights instruments, and in the case law of the relevant institutions. It shows how the various structural components which are considered to constitute those concepts operate both between relevant adults and between adults and children. But it also shows that important normative elements, in particular, anti-discrimination norms, operate both to undermine the perception of some structures as constituting ‘family’, and to modify those structures themselves. This raises the question how far human rights norms should be seen as protecting family units in themselves or the individual members that constitute them.

    This chapter focuses on the literature of Caribbean women who love women somewhere between the silenced and the loud-spoken, between the invisible and the high-profile: by offering a close reading of two incandescent, almost-forgotten examples of early twentieth-century Caribbean poetry. The first is an anonymous song composed by working-class Creole women in Suriname. The second is another poem written to be set to music but never performed. In working-class Paramaribo, Creole women in relationships with women engaged in ritual performances that publicized their desires. These performances included lavish birthday parties lovers threw for each other, with songs, dances, and staged fights. Haitian-born poet Ida Faubert, who, unlike the mati, seemed the kind of elite woman writer poised to enter literary history. Faubert was redefining herself as a newly independent woman at a time when female same-sex relationships were emerging as an increasingly visible option to compulsory heterosexuality in Paris.

  • This study examined the factor structure, reliability, and convergent and divergent validity of the Caregiving Questionnaire (CQ; Kunce & Shaver, 1994) with a sample of individuals who identify themselves as gay, lesbian, and bisexual and are currently involved in same-sex couple relationships (N = 143; 114 females). An exploratory factor analysis extracted the CQ's four dimensions, supporting its construct validity. Additionally, the questionnaire demonstrated acceptable internal consistency. Correlations were found among participants’ self-reported romantic attachment patterns, as evaluated by the Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR; Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998), and caregiving patterns, as measured by the CQ. No significant associations were found between the four factors and participants’ age, relationship duration, or gross annual revenue. Results support the use of the CQ with individuals involved in same-sex relationships.
