  • This Element offers a multidimensional study of reading practice and sibling rivalry in late eighteenth-century Britain. The case study is the Aberdeen student and disgraced thief Charles Burney's treatment of Evelina (1778), the debut novel of his sister Frances Burney. Coulombeau uses Charles's manuscript poetry, letters, and marginalia, alongside illustrative prints and circulating library archives, to tell the story of how he attempted to control Evelina's reception in an effort to bolster his own socio-literary status. Uniting approaches drawn from literary studies, biography, bibliography, and the history of the book, the Element enriches scholarly understanding of the reception of Frances Burney's fiction, with broader implications for studies of gender, class, kinship and reading in this period.   • Summary

    “Reading: John Dryden’s Postsecular Apostolic and the Time of Literary History” analyzes John Dryden’s writings of the 1680s, tracking his move (his literary conversion if you will) from allegory and allegoresis to new concepts of literary history and literary hermeneutics that demand new reading practices. It analyzes Dryden’s mid-career allegories as investigations into how conservative theories of temporality, figured here as the possibility of understanding across time, produce theories of literature and theories of reading that are oriented toward the future but that are necessarily grounded in the past and in material bodies. This chapter argues that Dryden’s writings from the 1680s secularize a ritualized, affective, transformative, and Catholic reading practice. It speculates that a literary conservatism – literary temporality as communion and literary interpretation as committed to a hermeneutics of immanence – constitutes a conservatively based idea of reading that resonates once again in the twenty-first century critical turn to post-critical and post-nationalistic methods.

  • This Element proposes to relate the eighteenth-century world of travel and travel writing with the bluestocking salon. It locates eminent British travellers and explorers in the female-presided intellectual space and examines their multifaceted interaction with the bluestockings between 1760 and 1799. The study shows how the bluestockings acquired knowledge of the world through reading, discussing, writing and collecting travel accounts. It explores the 'social life' of manuscript and printed travel texts in the circle, their popularity and impact on the bluestockings. This Element builds upon the body of evidence provided by their published and unpublished diaries, correspondence and private library catalogues.

  • TO PUNISH THE PERSON: A READING NOTE REGARDING A PUNCTUATION MARK IN THE TSINGHUA MANUSCRIPT *MING XUN

  • The Tsinghua manuscript *Ming xun 命訓 contains a compound sentence that reads: 大命殜罰少命＝身. In an earlier article, the author translated this sentence as “The great mandate for generations punishes; the minor mandates command the person,” understanding the “＝” mark to indicate that the preceding character ming 命 was to be repeated. However, scholars in China have recently noted that the “＝” mark can also indicate the repetition of characters that occur in the same context earlier in the text. This would suggest that the “＝” mark here indicates the repetition of the word fa 罰 in the preceding clause, such that the sentence should read “The great mandate punishes the world; minor mandates punish the person,” which is the reading of the received text of the Ming xun. This scribal practice has important implications for the reading of other manuscripts as well.
