We report the case of a patient suffering from dysthymia. He underwent successful ECT treatment and was medicated with nefazodone and midazolam. Comparing the EEG and motor seizure duration in the periods with and without midazolam, no significant differences were recorded, but the dosage of thiopental and of succinylcholine had to be increased markedly after midazolam was discontinued (P < 0.05; ANOVA). This case indicates a substantial pharmacodynamic interaction between nefazodone, midazolam, thiopental, and succinylcholine.

In this poster is presented the development and testing of a pilot project to teach basics of astronomy to primary school students. This is a learning program that bases on the interdisciplinary nature of astronomy with amusing and playful activities. The objective of the programme is to engage children in astronomy and make them aware of the importance of the development of science and technology for society. The program has been tested a small non-government-funded school in the state of Puebla, in Mexico. Due COVID-19 lockdown the classes had to switch from face-to-face to online. Over 80% of the students that completed the course had considerably increased their knowledge of astronomy and requested to continue with the classes on the next school term.

New data obtained by space missions to various objects in the Solar system and observations of the outer Solar system and exoplanets by space and ground-based telescopes allowed us to conclude that the atmospheric escape plays an important role in the evolution of the terrestrial planets in the Solar system. We present the recent results of application of the kinetic approach to the problem of neutral escape from planetary atmospheres. As an example, the recent measurements by Mars Express and MAVEN spacecraft are compared with the calculations of neutral escape with the aim to understand the atmospheric loss at Mars. Also the recent calculations of the mass-loss rates of the hot Neptune and Jupiter atmospheres are presented.

This is a brief review of our understanding of the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in dwarf galaxies in connection to their star formation activity. What are the dominant phases of the ISM in these objects? How do the properties of these phases depend on the galaxy properties? What do we know about their cold gas content and its link to star formation activity? Does star formation proceed differently in these galaxies? How does star formation feedback operate in dwarf galaxies? The availability of observations from space-based facilities such as FUSE, Spitzer, Herschel, and Fermi, as well as observatories such as SOFIA and ALMA, is allowing us to make significant strides in our understanding of these questions.

Galaxy clusters are excellent targets for high energy astrophysics with gamma rays. Not only they may host active galaxies, but they are often expected to provide signatures of accelerations of electrons and protons to PeV energies. Furthermore, according to ΛCDM scenario, they should be embedded in an extremely massive dark matter halo, the largest halo expected. In this report, we summarize the recently published MAGIC lower limits on the decaying dark matter lifetime using 202 h of selected high quality data taken on the Perseus galaxy cluster, in a 5-year long campaign.

We study the possibility of two types of inhomogeneous phases in core of neutron stars: one is the Coulomb crystal, which is known as quark-hadron pasta structures, and another one is chiral crystal. In the Coulomb crystal, the inhomogeneous phase appears as the result of the balance between the surface tension and the Coulomb interaction. In chiral crystal, we study the inhomogeneous chiral condensate, which has spatial modulation. In the simple model in 1+1 dimensions, this condensate has the same feature with the FFLO state, which is well known in the condensed matter physics.

Phylogenetics is a widely used concept in evolutionary biology. It is the reconstruction of evolutionary history by building trees that represent branching patterns and sequences. These trees represent shared history, and it is our contention that this approach can be employed in the analysis of Galactic history. In Galactic archaeology the shared environment is the interstellar medium in which stars form and provides the basis for tree-building as a methodological tool. Using elemental abundances of solar-type stars as a proxy for DNA, we built such an evolutionary tree to study the chemical evolution of the solar neighbourhood and published in Jofré15 et al. (2017). In this proceeding we summarise these results and discuss future prospects.

We present a determination of the local dark matter density derived using the integrated Jeans equation method presented in Silverwood et al. (2016) applied to SDSS-SEGUE G-dwarf data processed by Büdenbender et al. (2015). For our analysis we construct models for the tracer density, dark matter and baryon distribution, and tilt term (linking radial and vertical motions), and then calculate the vertical velocity dispersion using the integrated Jeans equation. These models are then fit to the data using MultiNest, and a posterior distribution for the local dark matter density is derived. We find the most reliable determination to come from the α-young population presented in Büdenbender et al. (2015), yielding a result of ρDM = 0.46+0.07−0.09 GeV cm−3 = 0.012+0.001−0.002 M⊙ pc−3. Our results also illuminate the path ahead for future analyses using Gaia DR2 data, highlighting which quantities will need to be determined and which assumptions could be relaxed.

The Swift satellite allows us to use gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to peer through the hearts of star forming galaxies through cosmic time. Our open collaboration, representing most of the active European researchers in this field, builds a public legacy sample of GRB X-shooter spectroscopy while Swift continues to fly. To date, our spectroscopy of more than 100 GRB afterglows covers a redshift range from 0.059 to about 8 (Tanvir et al. 2009, Nature 461, 1254), with more than 20 robust afterglow-based metallicity measurements (over a redshift range from 1.7 to 5.9). With afterglow spectroscopy (throughout the electromagnetic spectrum from X-rays to the sub-mm) we can hence characterize the properties of star-forming galaxies over cosmic history in terms of redshift, metallicity, molecular content, ISM temperature, UV-flux density, etc.. These observations provide key information on the final evolution of the most massive stars collapsing into black holes, with the potential of probing the epoch of the formation of the first (very massive) stars.

VLT/X-shooter (Vernet et al. 2011, A&A 536, A105) is in many ways the ideal GRB follow-up instrument and indeed GRB follow-up was one of the primary science cases behind the instrument design and implementation. Due to the wide wavelength coverage of X-shooter, in the same observation one can detect molecular H2 absorption near the atmospheric cut-off and many strong emission lines from the host galaxy in the near-infrared (e.g., Friis et al. 2015, MNRAS 451, 167). For example, we have measured a metallicity of 0.1 Z⊙ for GRB 100219A at z = 4.67 (Thöne et al. 2013, MNRAS 428, 3590), 0.02 Z⊙ for GRB 111008A at z = 4.99 (Sparre et al. 2014, ApJ 785, 150) and 0.05 Z⊙ for GRB 130606A at z = 5.91 (Hartoog et al. 2015, A&A 580, 139). In the latter, the very high value of [Al/Fe]=2.40 ± 0.78 might be due to a proton capture process and may be a signature of a previous generation of massive (perhaps even the first) stars. Reconciling the abundance patterns of GRB absorbers, other types of absorbers (in particular QSO DLAs), and old stars in the Local Group is an important long-term goal of this program (see Sparre et al. 2014, ApJ 785, 150). Metallicities are also measured from host emission lines (Krühler et al. 2015, A&A 581, A125). GRB spectroscopy also allows us to determine the dust content of their environments, both through analysis of the depletion pattern and the measurement of the associated extinction (Japelj et al. 2015, A&A 451, 2050). This way one can quantify the dust-to-metals ratio and its evolution with redshift. The detection of GRBs at z > 6 shows that GRBs have become competitive as a tool to identifying galaxies at the highest redshifts and unsurpassed in providing detailed abundance information via absorption line spectroscopy.

Polarimetric measurements are essential for the study of jetted sources associated with black holes, such as γ-ray bursts and blazars. The relativistic jets launched from regions close to the black hole are threaded with magnetic fields, which produce synchrotron emission, and can be studied with polarimetric measurements. The multi-colour, optimised, optical polarimeter (MOPTOP) is a multi-band imaging instrument designed for use on the Liverpool Telescope. By replacing the rotating polaroid with a half wave plate and beam splitter, the instrument utilises twice as much of the incoming beam of light from the telescope compared to its predecessor, Ringo3. MOPTOP also builds on the successful introduction of dichroic mirrors to perform simultaneous multi-waveband polarimetric and photometric analysis in Ringo3, and enhances the sensitivity of the instrument with sCMOS cameras to use all photons as efficiently as possible.

The inner region of the Milky Way is one of the most interesting and complex regions of the γ-ray sky. Intense interstellar emission and point sources contribute to it, as well as other potential components such as an unresolved population of point sources and dark matter. In recent years, claims have been made of an excess consistent with a dark matter annihilation signal in the data collected with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi–LAT). Although these results are intriguing, the complexity involved in modeling the foreground and background emission from conventional astrophysical sources of γ-rays makes a conclusive interpretation of these results challenging. In these proceedings, I discuss Fermi–LAT observations of the Galactic center region, the methodology for point source detection and treatment of the interstellar emission, the characterization of the GeV excess, and implications for dark matter.

Smith’s Cloud is a large few × 106 Solar Mass cloud which will impact the Milk Way disk in about 35 Million Years (Lockman et al., 2008). Green Bank Telescope OH observations indicate that there are no molecules present in Smith’s Cloud, and thus there is no active ongoing chemistry in Smith’s Cloud.

Building models capable of successfully matching the Terrestrial Planet's basic orbital and physical properties has proven difficult. Meanwhile, improved estimates of the nature of water-rich material accreted by the Earth, along with the timing of its delivery, have added even more constraints for models to match. While the outer Asteroid Belt seemingly provides a source for water-rich planetesimals, models that delivered enough of them to the still-forming Terrestrial Planets typically failed on other basic constraints - such as the mass of Mars.

Recent models of Terrestrial Planet Formation have explored how the gas-driven migration of the Giant Planets can solve long-standing issues with the Earth/Mars size ratio. This model is forced to reproduce the orbital and taxonomic distribution of bodies in the Asteroid Belt from a much wider range of semimajor axis than previously considered. In doing so, it also provides a mechanism to feed planetesimals from between and beyond the Giant Planet formation region to the still-forming Terrestrial Planets.

We present a set of time dependent chemical evolution models (based on the UMIST† astrochemistry 2012 code, McElroy et al. (2013) for a range of initial physical cloud parameters: 10 K < T < 20 K; 103 cm−3 < n(H2) < 5 ⋅ 104 cm−3; 1 < AV < 10 and with estimated values of scaled interstellar ultraviolet radiation field. We compare our chemical model results with the relative abundances of: CO, CH, OH, HCO+, HCN, HNC, NH3, N2H+ and H2CO molecules. We find significant time dependent variations of the chemical ratios of: X(NH3/H2); X(HCO+/H2) and X(HCO+/NH3). The input physical conditions were taken from Fehér O. et al. (2015) at 16 positions along the TMC-1 dark cloud. The NH3 and HCO+ relative densities based on the observations of Fehér O. et al. (2015) help to find the “chemical age” of the given position in the evolution curves.

We investigate the clustering of clusters detected by Planck via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. The bias (the offset of the clustering relative to what is expected for dark matter) is then used to estimate the average mass of clusters in the sample, using mass-bias relations found in simulations. We also compare the clustering of Planck clusters with those detected in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) using the GMBCG method. Our results indicate that Planck clusters have a higher average mass than that inferred from their SZ signatures.

We have conducted a LABOCA 870 μm follow-up of ten massive lensing clusters of the Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS, Egami et al. 2010) aiming at unveiling the yet hidden part of dusty star formation in the distant Universe. Among these clusters, A2744 and AS1063 are part of the Frontier Fields HST program. We also obtained 2 mm bolometer observations of A2744 and A370 with the GISMO array at the IRAM 30 m. We detected sources that are undetected with Herschel (PACS and SPIRE) implying either a very high redshift (z > 4) or a very low dust temperature (T<25 K). Their flux also imply a low intrinsic luminosity, LFIR < 1012L⊙. Some of them are extended and could correspond to multiple sources or to multiple images of a lensed source. Substructures in the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect could also contribute this very red submm emission. An ALMA program is ongoing to unveil the nature of these sources.

Integral field spectroscopy of nearby supernova sites within ~30 Mpc have been obtained using multiple IFU spectrographs in Hawaii and Chile. This technique enables both spatial and spectral information of the explosion sites to be acquired simultaneously, thus providing the identification of the parent stellar population of the supernova progenitor and the estimates for its physical parameters including age and metallicity via the spectrum. While this work has mainly been done in the optical wavelengths using instruments such as VIMOS, GMOS, and MUSE, a near-infrared approach has also been carried out using the AO-assisted SINFONI. By studying the supernova parent stellar population, we aim to characterize the mass and metallicity of the progenitors of different types of supernovae.

Interstellar dust is still the dominant uncertainty in Astronomy, limiting precision in e.g., cosmological distance estimates and models of how light is re-processed within a galaxy. When a foreground galaxy serendipitously overlaps a more distant one, the latter backlights the dusty structures in the nearer foreground galaxy. Such an overlapping or occulting galaxy pair can be used to measure the distribution of dust in the closest galaxy with great accuracy. The STARSMOG program uses HST observation of occulting galaxy pairs to accurately map the distribution of dust in foreground galaxies in fine (<100 pc) detail. Furthermore, Integral Field Unit observations of such pairs will map the effective extinction curve in these occulting galaxies, disentangling the role of fine-scale geometry and grain composition on the path of light through a galaxy.

The overlapping galaxy technique promises to deliver a clear understanding of the dust in galaxies: the dust geometry, a probability function of the amount of dimming as a function of galaxy type, its dependence on wavelength, and evolution of all these properties with cosmic time using distant, high-redshift pairs.

M105 in the Leo I Group is a textbook example of a standard elliptical galaxy. It is only one of the few elliptical galaxies for which we can study their stellar halos using the resolved stars. It is an ideal target to study the structure and composition of stellar halos in elliptical galaxies. We present photometry and metallicity of the resolved stars in the inner and outer regions of M105. These provide strong evidence that there are two distinct stellar halos in this galaxy, a metal-poor (blue) halo and a metal-rich (red) halo. Then we compare them with those in other early-type galaxies and use the dual halo mode formation scenario to describe how massive galaxies formed.
