We investigate the relationship between a galaxy cluster’s hydrostatic equilibrium state, the entropy profile, K, of the intracluster gas, and the system’s non-thermal pressure (NTP), within an analytic model of cluster structures. When NTP is neglected from the cluster’s hydrostatic state, we find that the gas’ logarithmic entropy slope, $k\equiv \mathrm{d}\ln K/\mathrm{d}\ln r$, converges at large halocentric radius, r, to a value that is systematically higher than the value $k\simeq1.1$ that is found in observations and simulations. By applying a constraint on these ‘pristine equilibrium’ slopes, $k_\mathrm{eq}$, we are able to predict the required NTP that must be introduced into the hydrostatic state of the cluster. We solve for the fraction, $\mathcal{F}\equiv p_\mathrm{nt}/p$, of NTP, $p_\mathrm{nt}$, to total pressure, p, of the cluster, and we find $\mathcal{F}(r)$ to be an increasing function of halocentric radius, r, that can be parameterised by its value in the cluster’s core, $\mathcal{F}_0$, with this prediction able to be fit to the functional form proposed in numerical simulations. The minimum NTP fraction, as the solution with zero NTP in the core, $\mathcal{F}_0=0$, we find to be in excellent agreement with the mean NTP predicted in non-radiative simulations, beyond halocentric radii of $r\gtrsim0.7r_{500}$, and in tension with observational constraints derived at similar radii. For this minimum NTP profile, we predict $\mathcal{F}\simeq0.20$ at $r_{500}$, and $\mathcal{F}\simeq0.34$ at $2r_{500}$; this amount of NTP leads to a hydrostatic bias of $b\simeq0.12$ in the cluster mass $M_{500}$ when measured within $r_{500}$. Our results suggest that the NTP of galaxy clusters contributes a significant amount to their hydrostatic state near the virial radius and must be accounted for when estimating the cluster’s halo mass using hydrostatic equilibrium approaches.

We investigate the connection between a cluster’s structural configuration and observable measures of its gas emission that can be obtained in X-ray and Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) surveys. We present an analytic model for the intracluster gas density profile: parameterised by the dark matter halo’s inner logarithmic density slope, $\alpha$, the concentration, c, the gas profile’s inner logarithmic density slope, $\varepsilon$, the dilution, d, and the gas fraction, $\eta$, normalised to cosmological content. We predict four probes of the gas emission: the emission-weighted, $T_\mathrm{X}$, and mean gas mass-weighted, $T_\mathrm{m_g}$, temperatures, and the spherically, $Y_\mathrm{sph}$, and cylindrically, $Y_\mathrm{cyl}$, integrated Compton parameters. Over a parameter space of clusters, we constrain the X-ray temperature scaling relations, $M_{200} - T_\mathrm{X}$ and $M_{500} - T_\mathrm{X}$, within $57.3\%$ and $41.6\%$, and $M_{200} - T_\mathrm{m_g}$ and $M_{500} - T_\mathrm{m_g}$, within $25.7\%$ and $7.0\%$, all respectively. When excising the cluster’s core, the $M_{200} - T_\mathrm{X}$ and $M_{500} - T_\mathrm{X}$ relations are further constrained, to within $31.3\%$ and $17.1\%$, respectively. Similarly, we constrain the SZ scaling relations, $M_{200} - Y_\mathrm{sph}$ and $M_{500} - Y_\mathrm{sph}$, within $31.1\%$ and $17.7\%$, and $M_{200} - Y_\mathrm{cyl}$ and $M_{500} - Y_\mathrm{cyl}$, within $25.2\%$ and $22.0\%$, all respectively. The temperature observable $T_\mathrm{m_g}$ places the strongest constraint on the halo mass, whilst $T_\mathrm{X}$ is more sensitive to the parameter space. The SZ constraints are sensitive to the gas fraction, whilst insensitive to the form of the gas profile itself. In all cases, the halo mass is recovered with an uncertainty that suggests the cluster’s structural profiles only contribute a minor uncertainty in its scaling relations.

Galaxy clusters have been found to host a range of diffuse, non-thermal emission components, generally with steep, power law spectra. In this work we report on the detection and follow-up of radio halos, relics, remnant radio galaxies, and other fossil radio plasmas in Southern Sky galaxy clusters using the Murchison Widefield Array and the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. We make use of the frequency coverage between the two radio interferometers—from 88 to $\sim\!900$ MHz—to characterise the integrated spectra of these sources within this frequency range. Highlights from the sample include the detection of a double relic system in Abell 3186, a mini-halo in RXC J0137.2–0912, a candidate halo and relic in Abell 3399, and a complex multi-episodic head-tail radio galaxy in Abell 3164. We compare this selection of sources and candidates to the literature sample, finding sources consistent with established radio power–cluster mass scaling relations. Finally, we use the low-frequency integrated spectral index, $\alpha$ ( $S_v \propto v^\alpha$ ), of the detected sample of cluster remnants and fossil sources to compare with samples of known halos, relics, remnants and fossils to investigate a possible link between their electron populations. We find the distributions of $\alpha$ to be consistent with relic and halo emission generated by seed electrons that originated in fossil or remnant sources. However, the present sample sizes are insufficient to rule out other scenarios.

We report on the detection of a giant radio halo in the cluster Abell 3404 as well as confirmation of the radio halo observed in Abell 141 (with linear extents $\sim\!770$ and $\sim\!850$ kpc, respectively). We use the Murchison Widefield Array, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array to characterise the emission and intervening radio sources from $\sim100$ to 1 000 MHz; power law models are fit to the spectral energy distributions with spectral indices $\alpha_{88}^{1\,110} = -1.66 \pm 0.07$ and $\alpha_{88}^{943} = -1.06 \pm 0.09$ for the radio halos in Abell 3404 and Abell 141, respectively. We find strong correlation between radio and X-ray surface brightness for Abell 3404 but little correlation for Abell 141. We note that each cluster has an atypical morphology for a radio-halo-hosting cluster, with Abell 141 having been previously reported to be in a pre-merging state, and Abell 3404 is largely relaxed with only minor evidence for a disturbed morphology. We find that the radio halo powers are consistent with the current radio halo sample and $P_\nu$–M scaling relations, but note that the radio halo in Abell 3404 is an ultra-steep–spectrum radio halo (USSRH) and, as with other USSRHs lies slightly below the best-fit $P_{1.4}$–M relation. We find that an updated scaling relation is consistent with previous results and shifting the frequency to 150 MHz does not significantly alter the best-fit relations with a sample of 86 radio halos. We suggest that the USSRH halo in Abell 3404 represents the faint class of radio halos that will be found in clusters undergoing weak mergers.

We present a radio and X-ray analysis of the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J2032–5627. Investigation of public data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) at 943 MHz shows two previously undetected radio relics at either side of the cluster. For both relic sources, we utilise archival Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) data at 5.5 GHz in conjunction with the new ASKAP data to determine that both have steep integrated radio spectra ( $\ensuremath{{\alpha_\mathrm{SE} = -1.52 \pm 0.10}}$ and $\ensuremath{{\alpha_\mathrm{NW,full} = -1.18 \pm 0.10}}$ for the southeast and northwest relic sources, respectively). No shock is seen in XMM-Newton observations; however, the southeast relic is preceded by a cold front in the X-ray–emitting intra-cluster medium. We suggest the lack of a detectable shock may be due to instrumental limitations, comparing the situation to the southeast relic in Abell 3667. We compare the relics to the population of double relic sources and find that they are located below the current power–mass scaling relation. We present an analysis of the low-surface brightness sensitivity of ASKAP and the ATCA, the excellent sensitivity of both allow the ability to find heretofore undetected diffuse sources, suggesting these low-power radio relics will become more prevalent in upcoming large-area radio surveys such as the Evolutionary Map of the Universe.

Diffuse, non-thermal emission in galaxy clusters is increasingly being detected in low-frequency radio surveys and images. We present a new diffuse, steep-spectrum, non-thermal radio source within the cluster Abell 1127 found in survey data from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). We perform follow-up observations with the ‘extended’ configuration MWA Phase II with improved resolution to better resolve the source and measure its low-frequency spectral properties. We use archival Very Large Array S-band data to remove the discrete source contribution from the MWA data, and from a power law model fit we find a spectral index of –1.83±0.29 broadly consistent with relic-type sources. The source is revealed by the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 150 MHz to have an elongated morphology, with a projected linear size of 850 kpc as measured in the MWA data. Using Chandra observations, we derive morphological estimators and confirm quantitatively that the cluster is in a disturbed dynamical state, consistent with the majority of phoenices and relics being hosted by merging clusters. We discuss the implications of relying on morphology and low-resolution imaging alone for the classification of such sources and highlight the usefulness of the MHz to GHz radio spectrum in classifying these types of emission. Finally, we discuss the benefits and limitations of using the MWA Phase II in conjunction with other instruments for detailed studies of diffuse, steep-spectrum, non-thermal radio emission within galaxy clusters.

We report an investigation of the properties of dwarf galaxies (Mr < -15) inside 26 clusters at z = 0.15 – 0.25, using the X-ray data from the Chandra archive, and optical images taken with Subaru Suprime-Cam. Our results include: 1. Investigation of the dwarf galaxy density distribution is sensitive to the background galaxies and the choice of colour selection of galaxies. 2. Cluster-centric dwarf-to-giant ratio is highly sensitive to the level of subtracted background galaxies. 3. A certain fraction of faint galaxies always remain undetected by the detection algorithm near the center of clusters, even after carefully treating the halo or extra diffuse light created by bright galaxies. The number of ‘undetected’ faint galaxies varies significantly from cluster to cluster, and even from pointing to pointing. 4. Dwarf galaxies extend up to 2 Mpc from the center in most clusters. Meanwhile, the distribution of blue dwarf galaxies extends more to the outside. 5. For a given colour, the spatial distributions of dwarf galaxies and giant galaxies become similar. Namely, the most of the radial distribution comes from the colour, rather than the size, of galaxies. 6. Relative to the NFW profile, all of the galaxy populations are showing a deficit near the cluster core (r < 0.3 Mpc). 7. The dwarf-to-giant ratio shows no variation against cluster measures such as the richness and X-ray luminosity, as well as various cluster X-ray characteristics related to possible dynamical status of clusters.

We present deep low radio frequency (230-470 MHz) observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array of the Perseus cluster, probing the non-thermal emission from the old particle population of the AGN outflows. Our observations of this nearby relaxed cool core cluster have revealed a multitude of new structures associated with the mini-halo, extending to hundreds of kpc in size. Its irregular morphology seems to have been influenced both by the AGN activity and by the sloshing motion of the cluster’ gas. In addition, it has a filamentary structure similar to that seen in radio relics found in merging clusters. These results illustrate the high-quality images that can be obtained with the new JVLA at low radio-frequencies.

We analyse archival XMM-Newton observations of the massive galaxy group NGC 4839 falling into the Coma cluster core, which reveal a complex morphology for the merger. By comparing high quality X-ray maps of the merging subcluster with SPH simulations, we propose an infall scenario which qualitatively reproduces the observed structure of the NGC 4839 tail.

We present the results of a study of the AGN density in a homogeneous and well studied sample of 167 bona-fide X-ray galaxy clusters (0.1<z<0.5). Our aim is to study the AGN activity in 167 XXL X-ray galaxy clusters as a function of the cluster mass and the location of the AGN in the cluster. We report a significant AGN excess in our low-mass cluster sub-sample between 0.5r500 and 2r500. In contrast, the high-mass sub-sample presents no AGN excess. The AGN excess in poor clusters indicates AGN triggering, supporting previous studies that reported enhanced galaxy merging in the cluster outskirts. This effect is probably prevented by high velocity dispersions in high-mass clusters. Comparing also with previous studies of massive or high-redshift clusters, we conclude that the AGN fraction in cluster galaxies anti-correlates strongly with cluster mass.

Hitomi (ASTRO-H) is an X-ray observatory developed by an international collaboration led by JAXA. An X-ray microcalorimeter onboard this satellite has opened a new window of high-resolution spectroscopy with an unprecedented energy resolution of 5 eV (FWHM) at 6 keV. The spacecraft was launched on February 17, 2016 from Tanegashima Island, Japan, and we completed initial operations including deployment of the hard X-ray imagers on the extensible optical bench. All scientific instruments had successfully worked until the sudden loss of the mission on March 26. We have obtained a spectrum showing fully resolved emission lines through the first-light observation of the Perseus Cluster. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164 ± 10 km s−1 reveals the quiescent environment of intracluster medium at the cluster core, implying that measured cluster mass requires little correction for the turbulent pressure. We also discuss observations to the Galactic Center which could be performed with Hitomi.

Galaxies in group and cluster environments are subject to ram pressure stripping by the hot intracluster medium, resulting in gas loss and the eventual suppression of star formation. Recent Chandra observations of galaxies in group and cluster environments show that 60 - 80% of these galaxies have compact (1-4 kpc), hot (~ 1 keV) X-ray coronae centered on their cores. These coronae have survived stripping and evaporation in the cluster, and their long-term survival poses a test of our understanding of the physical processes in the ICM. In this poster, I summarize results from Vijayaraghavan & Ricker (2015), where we simulated the evolution of populations of galaxies and their hot coronal gas in group and cluster environments, and evaluated their detectability with existing and future X-ray catalogs.

Recent advances in X-ray and microwave observations have provided unprecedented insights into the structure and evolution of the hot X-ray emitting plasma from their cores to the virialization region in outskirts of galaxy clusters. Recent Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) surveys (ACT, Planck, SPT) have provided new cluster catalogs, significantly expanding coverage of the mass-redshift plane, while Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray follow-up programs have improved our understanding of cluster physics and evolution as well as the surveys themselves. However, the current cluster-based cosmological constraints are still limited by uncertainties in cluster astrophysics. In order to exploit the statistical power of the current and upcoming X-ray and microwave cluster surveys, it is critical to improve our understanding of the structure and evolution of the hot X-ray emitting intracluster medium (ICM). In this session, we discussed recent advances in observations and simulations of galaxy clusters, with highlights on (i) the evolution of ICM profiles and scaling relations, (ii) physical processes operating in the outskirts of galaxy clusters, and (iii) impact of mergers on the ICM structure in groups and clusters.

We discuss recent advances and prospects in our understanding of the formation of structures on cosmic scales based on surveys of galaxy clusters in the X-ray bands. We highlight the interaction between observations and numerical simulations of the X-ray sky. We show how future surveys will unveil the nature of the dark energy and study its evolution with time.

Abell 2744 was the first HFF cluster completed. It displays a fascinating complexity in its distribution of dark and luminous matter, which led to its nickname of the Pandora cluster. In late 2014 we obtained a deep (110 ks) observation of this cluster with XMM-Newton, with the aim of making a detailed comparison between the optical, X-ray and lensing properties of this system. The new X-ray observation unveiled the presence of three hot gas filaments extending on scales of several Mpc and connected to the cluster core. The X-ray structures coincide spatially with the distribution of galaxies and dark matter and provide strong evidence for the existence of the elusive warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). The new observation also reveals the complexity of the thermodynamic structure of the cluster core and a probable shock front associated with the radio relic located 1 Mpc NW of the cluster core.

While the identification of a worthy topic or challenge is fundamental to the goal of conducting cutting-edge research, another ingredient is indispensable in the field of observational astronomy: the best possible target. Indeed, the ability to choose from a significant number of extremely powerful gravitational lenses was central to the success of the Frontier Fields project. We here briefly review the surveys that provided this crucial pool of targets, before focusing on the results of ongoing work to identify similarly extreme (if not more extreme) systems at higher redshift for the exploration of a yet more distant extragalactic frontier – with JWST and other, evermore ambitious missions.

Chandra has deeply observed the clusters and parallel fields in four Frontier Fields. These observations allow us to dramatically improve our understanding of cluster mergers by comparing the detailed mapping of the hot cluster gas with high resolution mass maps and by identifying merger shocks and cold fronts. In merging clusters, relativistic particles can be re-accelerated to produce radio relics. A comparison of lensing maps and Chandra images allows us to determine the cluster morphology and dynamical state and if there are offsets between the dark matter and the hot gas.

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) play key roles in galaxy and cluster evolution. This is most clearly seen in the “fossil record” that is imprinted in the gas rich atmospheres of early type galaxies, groups, and clusters by powerful SMBH outbursts. From a detailed X-ray study of M87, we present the properties of a typical SMBH outburst, its evolution, and the energy partition between shocks and the enthalpy of the gas cavities inflated by the SMBH. About 12 Myr ago, the SMBH in M87 inflated a cavity of relativistic plasma which is still centered near the galaxy nucleus. This outburst drove a shock into the surrounding gas. For M87, we show that the outburst duration is a few Myr and that about 50% of the total energy (5 × 1057 ergs) resides in the bubble inflated by the jet from the SMBH, that 25% of the outburst energy is deposited directly into the ambient atmosphere by the shock, and that 25% of the outburst energy is lost from the radiatively bright core as the weak shock moves to large radii. We conclude by describing a future X-ray mission, SMART-X, with < 1” angular resolution that would allow us to study the evolution of SMBHs and the hot, X-ray emitting atmospheres from high redshifts to the present for M87-like systems.

We are conducting a large survey of distant clusters of galaxies using radio sources with bent jets and lobes as tracers. These radio sources are driven by AGN and achieve their bent morphologies through interaction with the surrounding gas found in clusters of galaxies. Based on low-redshift studies, these types of sources can be used to identify clusters very efficiently. We present initial results from our survey of 653 bent-double radio sources with optical hosts too faint to appear in the SDSS. The sample was observed in the infrared with Spitzer, and it has revealed ~200 distant clusters or proto-clusters in the redshift range z ~ 0.7 - 3.0. The sample of bent-doubles contains both quasars and radio galaxies enabling us to study both radiative and kinetic mode feedback in cluster and group environments at a wide range of redshifts.

We present results from deep Chandra X-ray observations of the galaxy group NGC 5813. This system shows three pairs of collinear cavities, with each pair associated with an elliptical AGN outburst shock. Due to the relatively regular morphology of this system, and the unique unambiguous detection of three distinct AGN outburst shocks, it is particularly well-suited for the study of AGN feedback and the AGN outburst history. We find that the mean kinetic power is roughly the same for each outburst, and that the total energy associated with the youngest outburst is significantly lower than that of the previous outbursts. This implies that the mean AGN jet power has remained stable for at least 50 Myr, and that the youngest outburst is ongoing. We find that the mean shock heating rate balances the local radiative cooling rate at each shock front, suggesting that AGN outburst shock heating alone is sufficient to offset cooling and establish AGN/ICM feedback within at least the central 30 kpc. Finally, we find non-zero shock front widths that are too large to be explained by particle diffusion, but are instead consistent with arising from broadening of the shock fronts due to propagation through a turbulent ICM with a mean turbulent speed of ~ 70 km s−1.
