We present the results of our analysis of 122 light-curves from 50 Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars using a red+white noise analysis, where we compare the fitted red noise features with stellar parameters to assess the presence of correlations with stellar parameters. A significant correlation between the amplitude of variability α0 and v∞ was found for the whole sample, along with several other correlations satisfying the Spearman-Rank p<0.001 criterion for both He-burning and WNh stars. Our results are compatible with several plausible processes that can have an influence on the level of variability in the winds of these stars, including a subsurface convection zone and core-generated internal gravity waves.

In the efforts to map the Milky Way structure, the central regions have remained very difficult to probe. The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea Survey (VVV) is a near-IR variability Survey that scans 560 sq.deg. across the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the southern mid-plane. The main goal of the VVV Survey is to build a 3D map of the structure of the inner Galaxy and characterize its stellar populations. This survey has discovered different kinds of objects, such as globular clusters, Microlensing events, RR Lyrae stars, Cepheids, WITs, among others. The extension of the Survey (VVVX) is observing until 2020, tripling the areal coverage, and complementing the variability studies done by the VVV Survey.

RR Lyrae variables are powerful tools to study their host stellar populations. Globular clusters and dwarf galaxies are old and usually host this type of variables. With a growing number of low luminosity objects discovered in the halo of the Milky Way, classifying stars clusters and galaxies has become more challenging. In this study, we examine the properties of RR Lyrae stars in globular clusters and dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. We construct a catalog of RR Lyrae variables in the Local Group globular clusters and dwarf galaxies from previously published data and compare the properties of RR Lyrae variables between those two types of stellar systems. Our goal is to search for a physical difference in the properties of RR Lyrae variables in those two classes of stellar systems. We also analyze the global trend of RRLs in these systems to understand more about their formation and evolution history.

Astronomy has an enviable wealth of historical observations. Some verge on the archaeological, and display rare events such as novæ and supernovæ; others range up to 100 or more years in age, and bear unique information about events that will never repeat in detail. Yet most astronomers today know little of those resources and the scientific potential which they harbour, so rather infrequent use is made today of those historical data. The problem is that historical data were perforce obtained in analogue formats, and because of those formats the data too tend to be regarded as hailing from a culture whose scientific significance is passé. But the medium is not the message! Astronomy’s archives of photographic observations constitute an irreplaceable resource. The change in technology from analogue to electronic recording in the late 20th Century was abrupt, and it left most of today’s astronomers unable to handle and use photographic data, and led to a general skepticism of the value of photographic observations for present-day studies of variability in the cosmos. But that is precisely what older data can do; in particular, the older the data the more reliable the base-line against which one can measure new trends, refine orbital parameters, discern period modulations, etc.

KIC 4851217 is a short period eclipsing binary (P = 2.47 days) in the field of the Kepler K1 mission. As well as variability caused by the eclipses, low-amplitude pulsations are also present in the data. A frequency analysis of the residual light-curve revealed δ Sct pulsations in the frequency range from 15–21 d−1 with amplitudes up to 3.5 mmag. Strong linear coupling (fi = fp + kforb) to orbital frequency was found, indicating tidally locked modes. From an analysis of 5 selected groups of frequencies we identified a radial mode on the secondary component, 3 dipole modes (l = |m| = 1), one of them present on the secondary component, and a quadrupole mode (l = |m| = 2), also located on the secondary component.

This general overview of our understanding of the Galaxy followed the lines of its main structures (halo, disc, bulge/bar) and emphasized some time-domain astronomy contributions. On the one hand the distance and tangential motions of the stars are essential to that understanding, and are obtained through multi-epoch surveys. On the other hand the chemistry of the stars and their radial velocities are also key elements for mapping the Galactic (sub-)structures, and unravelling their history and evolution. Contemporary surveys are revolutionizing our view of the Milky Way and of galaxies in general. Among those, the Gaia mission excels through its precise astrometry of 1.3 billion stars that populate the Milky Way and beyond, providing the first 3-D view of a major part of the Milky Way.

Octocam is an 8-channel VIS and NIR imager and spectrograph to be installed at Gemini South in 2022. It provides simultaneous imaging in g’,r’,i’,z,Y,J,H,KS bands or simultaneous spectroscopy at a resolution of ∼4000, together with high time-resolution options. Additional capabilities such as spectropolarimetry or an Integral Field Unit could be added as an upgrade later. These properties makes it very well suited as a follow-up instrument for transient searches. It is planned as a dedicated follow-up instrument for LSST, and will start operations at the same time as the LSST main survey. Octocam was conceived as a consortium consisting of South-West Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, IAA-CSIC in Granada, FRACTAL SLNE in Madrid, and George Washington University.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), the next-generation optical imaging survey sited at Cerro Pachon in Chile, will provide hundreds of detections for a sample of more than ten million quasars with redshifts up to about seven. The LSST design, with an 8.4m (6.7m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 sq. deg. field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera, will allow about 10,000 sq. deg. of sky to be covered twice per night, every three to four nights on average, with typical 5-sigma depth for point sources of r=24.5 (AB). With about 1000 observations in ugrizy bands over a 10-year period, these data will enable a deep stack reaching r=27.5 (about 5 magnitudes deeper than SDSS) and faint time-domain astronomy. The measured properties of newly discovered and known astrometric and photometric transients will be publicly reported within 60 sec after closing the shutter. In addition to a brief introduction to LSST, I review optical quasar selection techniques, with emphasis on methods based on colors, variability properties, and astrometric behavior.

Diverse variable phenomena in the Universe are periodic. Astonishingly many of the periodic signals present in stars have timescales coinciding with human ones (from minutes to years). The periods of signals often have to be deduced from time series which are irregularly sampled and sparse, furthermore correlations between the brightness measurements and their estimated uncertainties are common. The uncertainty on the frequency estimation is reviewed. We explore the astronomical and statistical literature, in both cases of regular and irregular samplings. The frequency uncertainty is depending on signal to noise ratio, the frequency, the observational timespan. The shape of the light curve should also intervene, since sharp features such as exoplanet transits, stellar eclipses, raising branches of pulsation stars give stringent constraints. We propose several procedures (parametric and nonparametric) to estimate the uncertainty on the frequency which are subsequently tested against simulated data to assess their performances.

A damped random walk is a stochastic process, defined by an exponential covariance matrix that behaves as a random walk for short time scales and asymptotically achieves a finite variability amplitude at long time scales. Over the last few years, it has been demonstrated, mostly but not exclusively using SDSS data, that a damped random walk model provides a satisfactory statistical description of observed quasar variability in the optical wavelength range, for rest-frame timescales from 5 days to 2000 days. The best-fit characteristic timescale and asymptotic variability amplitude scale with the luminosity, black hole mass, and rest wavelength, and appear independent of redshift. In addition to providing insights into the physics of quasar variability, the best-fit model parameters can be used to efficiently separate quasars from stars in imaging surveys with adequate long-term multi-epoch data, such as expected from LSST.

Over the last decade, quasar sample sizes have increased from several thousand to several hundred thousand, thanks mostly to SDSS imaging and spectroscopic surveys. LSST, the next-generation optical imaging survey, will provide hundreds of detections per object for a sample of more than ten million quasars with redshifts of up to about seven. We briefly review optical quasar selection techniques, with emphasis on methods based on colors, variability properties and astrometric behavior.

The study of variable stars in open clusters via asteroseismology is a powerful tool for the study of stellar evolution and stars in general. That is because stars in clusters can be assumed to originate from the same interstellar cloud, so they share similar properties such as age and overall metallicity. We performed a search for variable stars in the field of the young open star cluster Roslund 2, with photoelectric and CCD photometry acquired at two different telescopes. Within the resulting light curves we have found 12 variable stars. Our measurements confirm three previously known variables.

We have previously calculated a number of 2D hydrodynamic simulations of convection and pulsation to full amplitude. These revealed a significantly better fit to the observed light curves near the red edge of the instability strip in the globular cluster M 3 than did previous 1D mixing length models. Here we compare those 2D results with our new 3D hydrodynamic simulations calculated with the same code. As expected, the horizontal spatial behaviour of convection in 2D and 3D is quite different, but the time dependence of the convective flux on pulsation phase is quite similar. The difference in pulsation growth rate is only about 0.1% per period, with the 3D models having more damping at each of the five effective temperatures considered. Full amplitude pulsation light curves in 2D and 3D are compared.

The new photometric observations of PG 2303+243 were obtained in 2012 during a campaign carried out with three telescopes. The analysis of these observations is presented in this paper. We identified l = 1 and l = 2 pulsation modes. The pulsation periods were compared with theoretical ones for models of ZZ Ceti stars. This allowed us to estimate the physical parameters of PG 2303+243. The star seems to be cooler and has thicker hydrogen layer than it was thought before. We have derived M*/M⊙ = 0.66, Teff = 11014 K and log(MH/M*)=−4.246 for this star.

We summarize the properties of the new periodic, small-amplitude, variable stars recently discovered in the open cluster NGC 3766. They are located in the region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram between δ Sct and slowly pulsating B stars, a region where no sustained pulsation is predicted by standard models. The origin of their periodic variability is currently unknown. We also discuss how the Gaia mission, launched at the end of 2013, can contribute to our knowledge of those stars.

Fourier analysis of the light curve of AC And from the HATNet database reveals the rich frequency structure of this object. Above 30 components are found down to the amplitude of 3 mmag. Several of these frequencies are not the linear combinations of the three basic components. We detect period increase in all three components that may lend support to the Population I classification of this variable.

A search for new pulsating stars in the Coma Berenices open cluster was carried out. As a result of this search, the cluster member Melotte 111 AV 1224 presented clear indications of photometric variability. In order to determine its physical parameters, Strömgren standard indices and low-resolution spectra were acquired. In this work, we present the preliminary results of these observations.

We present a large observing project monitoring globular clusters (GC) over long time baselines, which will lead to a complete census of variable stars in those clusters down to several magnitudes below the horizontal branch (HB). The use of Lucky Imaging (LI) will allow us to obtain high-precision photometry for even faint objects, and long-term monitoring will also mean that observations are sensitive to detecting other slow transient phenomena, such as gravitational microlensing, the primary aim of this project.

The study of variable phenomena (periodic, irregular or transient) provides a unique way to acquire knowledge about objects in our Universe. Currently, we are going through a rapid expansion of time-domain astrophysics. One reason for this expansion is the technological developments materialised in small to medium size observational projects such as HAT, OGLE, Catalina, PTF and upcoming very large projects such as Gaia or LSST.

In this article, we are focusing on the ESA cornerstone mission Gaia. This spacecraft will provide astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic measurements for one billion stars. Among the existing and planned multi-epoch projects Gaia is unique because it will provide exquisite astrometric measurements for all objects it observes. We provide a brief overview of the literature concerning this mission and its expected contribution to variability studies.

We report on the detailed elemental abundances of RV Tau variables that reside in globular clusters, and how they compare with those of RV Tau variables in the field. Surprisingly, they seem to show definite differences, and at this stage, it is not clear why this is so.
