Resonant micro-biochemical sensors play important roles in a wide range of emerging applications to detect biochemical molecules. As the resonators of micro-biochemical sensors, the vibration characteristics of circular sensor diaphragms are important for the design of diaphragm-based resonant micro-biochemical sensors. In this paper, the influence of residual stresses on the vibration of a circular sensor diaphragm with surface effects is analyzed. Based on the Kirchhoff's plate theory and surface elasticity theory, the governing equation is presented. The material characteristic lengths for different surface effects are obtained. The influences of residual stresses on the effective flexural rigidity and natural frequency of the diaphragm with surface effects are discussed. Results show that the influence of residual stresses on the effective flexural rigidity becomes obvious with the increasing of residual stresses. The first order natural frequency increases rapidly when the tension parameter is larger than 30 for the stiffened surfaces, while for the softened surfaces the value is 10. Moreover, surface effects can influence the transition range of diaphragm from the plate behavior to membrane behavior in terms of the tension parameter. The transition range can be enlarged by the stiffened surface and be shortened by the softened surface. The analysis and results are helpful for the design of sensor diaphragm-based resonant micro-biochemical sensors and some related researches.

The past century has witnessed the rise and maturity of the flying machine, starting with the Wright brothers flyer to today’s modern passenger aircrafts and warfighters. At the start of this century, yet another achievement in flying vehicle technology was seen with the launch of the Boeing 787 aircraft, which has a significant portion by weight of polymer matrix fibre composites. This paper, therefore, addresses the effects of the manufacturing process of fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites on mechanical performance. Computations are carried out using the Finite Element (FE) method at the microscale where Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) are analysed with Periodic Boundary Conditions (PBCs). Straight fibre pre-preg-based composites and textile composites are considered. The commercial code ABAQUS is used as the solver for the FE equations, supplemented by user-written subroutines. The transition from a continuum to damage/failure is effected by using the Bažant-Oh crack band model, which preserves mesh objectivity. Results are presented for RVEs that are first subjected to curing and subsequently to mechanical loading. The effect of the fibre packing randomness on the microstructure is examined by considering multifibre RVEs where fibre volume fraction is held constant but with random packing of fibres. Plain weave textile composites are also cured first and then subjected to mechanical loads. The possibility of failure is accommodated throughout the analysis – failure can take place during the curing process even prior to the application of in-service mechanical loads. The analysis shows the differences in both the cured RVE strength and stiffness, when cure-induced damage has and has not been taken into account.

Boriding is a thermochemical diffusion-based process of achieving ultra-hard surface on metals. Two distinct crystalline phases, i.e. tetragonal Fe2B and orthorhombic FeB can exist in the surface layer penetrated by boron ions. In our contribution, we have studied the microstructure, the hardness, and the spatial distributions of both phase composition and residual stresses (RS) in samples exhibiting either single-phase Fe2B or duplex Fe2B-cum-FeB character. The indispensable knowledge of the elastic constants used in the stresses calculations from the measured strains by X-ray diffraction were gained from the refined lattice parameters of both iron borides employing density functional theory implemented in CASTEP software by Materials Studio. In the studied case, there is only minor occurrence of preferred orientation in the Fe2B phase and the evaluated RS have compressive character gradually decreasing from its maximum value on the very surface.

In a thin film system involving dissimilar materials, the residual stresses and microstructural defects are inevitable due to the misfits of lattice structures and thermal properties of the materials. Unfortunately, the relationship between the stresses and interface defects is still unclear to date. This article aims to clarify such an important relationship by a finite element (FE) analysis incorporating the dislocation distribution from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Layer removal and Raman spectroscopy were also conducted to explore the film-thickness effect. It was found that that residual stress variation in a thin film system is caused by the coupled effect of lattice-thermal misfits and discrete interfacial dislocations, that the residual stresses are dependent on the film thickness, and that it is particularly important to identify the correct density of interface dislocations for an accurate residual stress calculation by a FE analysis.

Using X-ray grazing incidence diffraction (GID) it is possible to perform a nondestructive analysis of the heterogeneous stress field for different volumes below the surface of the sample. The stress can be measured at very small depths, of the order of a few μm. The penetration depth of radiation is almost constant in a wide 2θ range for a given incidence angle α. It can be easily changed by an appropriate selection of α angle (or also by using a different type of radiation). There are, however, some factors which have to be corrected in this technique. The most important is the refraction of X-ray wave: it changes the wavelength and direction of the beam. Both effects modify a pick position. A corresponding correction was calculated and tested on ferrite powder and on 316L austenite stainless steel sample.

We have used synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments to measure the strain field introduced by a hydride blister grown on a section of a pressure tube from a CANDU nuclear reactor. After charging the tube section with a homogeneous hydrogen concentration of 300 wt ppm, the blister was produced by creating a small cold spot on its surface (∼200 °C), while the bulk was kept at a temperature of 338 °C over a period of 1008 h. The blister studied here is ellipsoidal in shape, with its long axis along the tube axial direction. The experiments were performed on the wiggler beam line ID15 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) using a polychromatic beam of high-energy X-rays (60 to 300 keV). Unlike conventional X-ray diffraction, in this mode the scattering angle is fixed and the diffracted beam is discriminated on the basis of the photon energy. The results show that the blister is composed by two crystallographic phases (δ-ZrH and α-Zr), with volume fractions varying with position. The maximum stresses appear at the blister-matrix interfaces. Near the tube outer surface, we found large compressive stresses of (−450±90) MPa along the blister long axis, and tensile stresses (+320±90) MPa along the tube hoop direction. The main uncertainty in these stresses results from the uncertainty in the elastic constants of the hydride phase. Large strains and broad peaks were observed for this phase, which were explained by a rather low Young’s modulus (35 GPa) for the hydride. The results are compared with finite element simulations found in the literature.

Four matrix-phase crystallographic directions of IN718 are investigated by in situ tensile tests using neutron diffraction. The elastic diffraction constants for all directions measured are compared to theoretical values calculated by the Kröner model. The differences between the microscopic and the macroscopic material response are given. The accumulation of microstrains in the different crystallographic directions is discussed. A comparison between the results of a single phase material (ingot IN718) and two differently thermal treated multiphase materials is presented.

L'utilisation de la méthode ultrasonore pour l'évaluation des contraintes résiduelles repose sur l'effet acoustoélastique qui traduit une dépendance de la vitesse de propagation des ondes acoustiques en fonction de l'état de déformation du solide. Dans le cas du soudage, les modifications microstructurales observées dans la zone affectée thermiquement et dans la zone fondue induisent également des variations de la vitesse de propagation des ondes acoustiques. La superposition des deux effets : contraintes et microstructure conduit à surestimer les niveaux de contraintes. Ce travail réalisé en collaboration avec le CETIM de Senlis essaie d'apporter une réponse à ce problème observé dans le cas du soudage. La solution adoptée consiste à caractériser l'effet acoustoélastique ainsi que les vitesses de propagation $V_{0 }$ pour les différentes zones de la soudure. L'étude expérimentale effectuée sur des tôles en aciers P460 HLE et P265 soudées avec un chanfrein en X a permis de valider notre démarche. Ceci nous permet d'envisager sous certaines conditions, l'utilisation de cette méthode dans le cas des équipements sous pression.

Cet article porte sur la modélisation des culasses aluminium de moteurs diesel HDI en vue de prédire leur tenue en fatiguepolycyclique. Celles-ci, avant d'être frettées, serrées sur le bloc moteur et utilisées en service, subissent un traitement thermique (trempe et revenu) afin d'améliorer leurs propriétés mécaniques. Lors de ce procédé d'importantescontraintes résiduelles sont générées. Leur modélisation est nécessaire pour obtenir des résultats numériques prédictifs. Une première difficulté vient de la modélisation des échanges thermiques. Pour cela, le choix d'une fonction analytique simple pour le coefficient d'échange H = f(Tparoi), suivi de l'optimisation des différents paramètres, a permis demodéliser les courbes de refroidissement. Une fois l'histoire thermique de la culasse modélisée, un calcul mécanique élastoplastique permet dedéterminer les contraintes résiduelles. Celles-ci, fortement de traction dans la zone à risque, sont défavorables à la tenue à la fatigue polycyclique de la pièce dans le cas de la trempe à l'eau. La prise en compte de l'état résiduel de fin de traitement thermique dans la filière de dimensionnement à la fatigue polycyclique permet alors de caractériser les zones à risque expérimentalement observées.

Stress/Strain fields associated with thin film buckling induced by compressive stresses or blistering due to the presence of gas bubbles underneath single crystal surfaces are difficult to measure owing to the microscale dimensions of these structures. In this work, we show that micro Scanning X-ray diffraction is a well suited technique for mapping the strain/stress tensor of these damaged structures.

Ce travail porte sur l'utilisation du verre comme véritable matériau de structure et concerne plus particulièrement le calcul des contraintes résiduelles de trempe autour des zones d'assemblage par insertion d'un connecteur métallique au sein de plaques trouées et chanfreinées pour la prédiction de la résistance de tels assemblages.Des simulations numériques par la méthode des éléments finis du procédé de trempe sont menées pour le calcul des contraintes transitoires et résiduelles près des bords de plaques de verre (calculs 2D) et près de trous chanfreinés (calculs 3D). Le verre est considéré comme un matériau viscoélastique, le modèle de Narayanaswamy est utilisé, il prend en compte les phénomènes de relaxation de contraintes d'origine visqueuse et structurale. Une difficulté provient de la description correcte des transferts de chaleur pendant la trempe qui est d'importance majeure pour la prédiction des contraintes résiduelles. La convection forcée due au soufflage de l'air et le rayonnement sont modélisés, le caractère semi-transparent du verre est pris en compte. Les coefficients de convection forcée dans les zones bords sont identifiés expérimentalement. Les résultats de prédiction des contraintes résiduelles de trempe sont comparés à des résultats de mesures photo-élastiques. Ce travail permet l'optimisation de la géométrie de la plaque de verre pour un renforcement maximal dans la zone d'assemblage.

Dans un premier temps, les phénomènes à l'origine des contraintes résiduelles en injection de thermoplastique sont décrits, avec les spécificités liées aux polymères renforcés de fibres. Le refroidissement hétérogène associé à une variation de comportement mécanique conduit aux contraintes d'origine thermique, auxquelles il faut ajouter les contraintes dues à la pression dans la phase fluide figée par la solidification. Les fibres de renfort introduisent une hétérogénéité et une anisotropie de comportement mécanique et de retrait. Dans un deuxième temps, une méthode de mesure des contraintes résiduelles basée sur l'enlèvement de couches et la mesure des moments de flexion est présentée. Elle permet la mesure des contraintes résiduelles pour des matériaux anisotropes comme les thermoplastiques renforcés de fibres. En général, on obtient des contraintes de traction en cœur, et de compression en peau. L'effet du fraisage pour enlever les couches est évalué. La pression et le temps de maintien, la température de régulation du moule, le taux de fibres influencent les profils de contraintes.

Ce travail porte sur l'utilisation du verre comme véritable matériau de structure et concerne plus particulièrement la proposition d'une méthode de contrôle in situ non destructif des structures en verre trempé thermiquement, notamment dans les zones d'assemblage. Une méthode de dimensionnement de la structure est proposée. Elle est fondée d'une part, sur un état limite ultime garantissant la pérennité de la structure sur une longue durée de chargement, et d'autre part, sur une prédiction, par la méthode des éléments finis, en tout point de la structure, de l'état de contraintes résiduelles dues au procédé de trempe thermique ainsi que celles dues au chargement mécanique extérieur. La méthode de contrôle consiste à comparer, durant la vie de la structure, des images issues d'analyses photoélastiques sur la structure chargée, à des images obtenues par calcul aux éléments finis pour l'état limite ultime ayant servi au dimensionnement.
