The present paper is concerned with reliability economics, considering a certain performance-per-cost criterion for coherent and mixed systems, as introduced in [Dugas, M.R. & Samaniego, F.J. (2007). On optimal system designs in reliability-economics frameworks. Naval Research Logistics 54, 568–582]. We first present a new comparison result for performance-per-cost of systems with independent and identically distributed component lifetimes under certain stochastic orderings. We then consider optimization of the performance-per-cost criterion, first reconsidering and refining results from the above cited paper, and then considering mixtures of given subsets of coherent systems.

The signature of a coherent system has been studied extensively in the recent literature. Signatures are particularly useful in the comparison of coherent or mixed systems under a variety of stochastic orderings. Also, certain signature-based closure and preservation theorems have been established. For example, it is now well known that certain stochastic orderings are preserved from signatures to system lifetimes when components have independent and identical distributions. This applies to the likelihood ratio order, the hazard rate order, and the stochastic order. The point of departure of the present paper is the question of whether or not a similar preservation result will hold for the mean residual life order. A counterexample is provided which shows that the answer is negative. Classes of distributions for the component lifetimes for which the latter implication holds are then derived. Connections to the theory of order statistics are also considered.

The Samaniego signature is a relevant tool for studying the performance of a system whose component lifetimes are exchangeable. It is well known that the stochastic ordering of the signatures of two systems implies the same for the respective system lifetimes. We prove that the reverse claim is not true when the component lifetimes are independent and identically distributed. There exist small proportions of systems with stochastically ordered lifetimes whose signatures are not ordered. We present a simple procedure in order to check whether the system lifetimes are stochastically ordered even if their signatures are not comparable.

An expression of the extropy of a mixed system's lifetime was given firstly. Based on this expression, two mixed systems with same signature but with different components were compared. It was shown that the extropy of lifetime of a mixed system equals to that of its dual system if the lifetimes of the components have symmetric probability density function. Moreover, some bounds of the extropy of lifetimes of mixed systems were obtained and the concept of Jensen–extropy (JE) divergence of mixed systems was proposed. The JE divergence is non-negative and it can be used as an alternative information criteria for comparing mixed systems with homogeneous components. To illustrate the applications of JE divergence, some examples are addressed at the end of this paper.

The signature of a coherent system is a useful tool in the study and comparison of lifetimes of engineered systems. In order to compare two systems of different sizes with respect to their signatures, the smaller system needs to be represented by an equivalent system of the same size as the larger system. In the paper we show how to construct equivalent systems by adding irrelevant components to the smaller system. This leads to simpler proofs of some current key results, and throws new light on the interpretation of mixed systems. We also present a sufficient condition for equivalence of systems of different sizes when restricting to coherent systems. In cases where for a given system there is no equivalent system of smaller size, we characterize the class of lower-sized systems with a signature vector which stochastically dominates the signature of the larger system. This setup is applied to an optimization problem in reliability economics.

We consider semicoherent and mixed systems with exchangeable components. We present sharp lower and upper bounds on various dispersion measures (in particular, variance and median absolute deviation) of the system lifetime, expressed in terms of the system signature and the dispersion of a single component lifetime. We construct joint exchangeable distributions of component lifetimes with two-point marginals which attain the bounds in the limit.

Sequential order statistics can be used to describe the ordered lifetimes of components in a system, where the failure of a component may affect the performance of remaining components. In this paper mixture representations of the residual lifetime and the inactivity time of systems with such failure-dependent components are considered. Stochastic comparisons of differently structured systems are obtained and properties of the weights in the mixture representations are examined. Furthermore, corresponding representations of the residual lifetime and the inactivity time of a system given the additional information about a previous failure time are derived.

We consider coherent and mixed reliability systems composed of elements with independent and identically distributed lifetimes. We present upper bounds on variances of system lifetimes, expressed in terms of variances of single components. We also discuss attainability conditions and some special cases and examples.
