Vermiculite is a mineral with many potential uses in various industrial areas, such as in insulation, horticulture, and environmental applications. The regolith of the Sokli carbonatite intrusion in northern Finland consists of weathered micas which reportedly contain vermiculite. The aim of the present study was to characterize the weathered mica in order to determine if the weathered regolith contains vermiculite. If so, the value of the apatite-rich Sokli intrusion may increase, because the vermiculite could be classified as an ore in Sokli. For the characterization, mica fractions were investigated using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The EPMA results show that the potassium (K2O) content of the mica investigated varies between 6.20 and 0.31 wt.%. The XRD results provided evidence that the interlayer distances in the mica vary between 10.1 and 14.7 Å. The TGA shows that the dehydration of the samples varies between 6 and 12 wt.% for temperatures up to 170°C. Dehydroxylation takes place in three steps, as is characteristic for vermiculite. The results from this study revealed that mica in the weathered parts of the Sokli carbonatite is mostly vermiculite, and that the vermiculite was formed by the weathering of phlogopite. These results can be used to determine whether vermiculite is a possible future commodity at the Sokli carbonatite complex.

We investigated the compositions of a suite of 361 chrome-bearing spinels from spinel peridotites, ophiolitic mantle chromitites and from layered igneous intrusions in which the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio has been determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy. We explore the crystal-chemical controls on the distribution of Fe3+ and on mineral stoichiometry with regard to electron-probe correction procedures for estimating Fe3+ in spinel. We find that chrome-bearing spinels can be subdivided into three groups: a Cr–Al-rich group; a high-Fe group; and a highly oxidised group. Spinels of the Cr–Al group are found in spinel peridotites and ophiolitic mantle chromitites. They are normal spinels with a low Fe3+ content and compositions that are close to stoichiometric. Spinels in the high-Fe group are found in layered igneous intrusions. They are also normal spinels which have higher concentrations of Fe3+ on the octahedrally coordinated site than is found for the Cr–Al group. Stoichiometric calculations tend to overestimate the Fe3+ content and their compositions do not conform to the MgO–cr# correlation found in the Cr–Al group. Spinels in the highly oxidised group are found in layered intrusions and ophiolitic mantle chromitites. They have (Fe3+/ΣFe)Möss > 0.4 and high Cr (cr# > 0.5), but relatively low Fe2+ (fe# 0.24–0.56). Stoichiometric calculations tend to underestimate the Fe3+ content. They represent normal spinels in which tetrahedrally coordinated Fe2+ has been oxidised to Fe3+.

Our data show that spinels with greater Cr and Fe are sufficiently different in their crystal chemistry from the aluminous spinels to indicate that the EPMA correction procedures developed for Fe3+ in aluminous spinels on the basis of the Cr/Al ratio, and used in oxy-thermobarometry, are inappropriate for Cr-rich and Fe-rich compositions.

Classical $k$-ratio models, for example, ZAF and $\phi ( \rho z)$, used in electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) assume a homogeneous or multilayered material structure, which essentially limits the spatial resolution of EPMA to the size of the interaction volume where characteristic X-rays are produced. We present a new model for characteristic X-ray emission that avoids assumptions on the material structure to not restrict the resolution of EPMA a priori. Our model bases on the spherical harmonic ($P_{\rm N}$) approximation of the Boltzmann equation for electron transport in continuous slowing down approximation. $P_{\rm N}$ models have a simple structure, are hierarchical in accuracy and well-suited for efficient adjoint-based gradient computation, which makes our model a promising alternative to classical models in terms of improving the resolution of EPMA in the future. We present results of various test cases including a comparison of the $P_{\rm N}$ model to a minimum entropy moment model as well as Monte-Carlo (MC) trajectory sampling, a comparison of $P_{\rm N}$-based $k$-ratios to $k$-ratios obtained with MC, a comparison with experimental data of electron backscattering yields as well as a comparison of $P_{\rm N}$ and MC based on characteristic X-ray generation in a three-dimensional material probe with fine structures.

Measurements of highly radioactive actinides such as Np, Pu, Am, or Cm in as-fabricated or irradiated nuclear fuels are crucial to improve the safety and performance of the nuclear fuel cycle, but also necessary to find solutions to the environmental impact of long-lived actinides in nuclear waste. Currently, the most common technique of measuring the quantity and distribution of actinides in nuclear fuel is electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). However, the accurate analysis of actinides by EPMA is accompanied by numerous obstacles such as interferences in the M-line X-ray region, absorption edges, and the lack of reference materials. Therefore, the measurement protocol of radioactive and irradiated samples requires further investigation and most importantly facilitation. Here, we establish a guideline for precise quantification of actinide elements (Th, U, Np, Pu, Am, and Cm) in fabricated or spent nuclear fuels. For this purpose, we have characterized actinide-bearing reference samples to visualize spectral interferences, list peak, and background positions and employ the standardless calibration curve method for the measurements of Am and Cm. This newly derived analytical protocol was successfully tested on an irradiated fuel sample and can be now implemented as an improved guideline for the quantification of actinides.

Electron-probe microanalysis of uranium and uranium alloys poses several problems, such as rapid oxidation, large poorly constrained correction factors, and a large number of characteristic x-ray lines. We show that U-metal can grow 10 nm of oxide within ~20 s of air exposure, increasing to 15–20 nm within a few minutes, which can produce a 30% quantification error at 5 kV. A 15 nm carbon coating on the UO2 reference material also produces an ~30% quantification error of the uncoated but surface oxidized U sample at 5 kV. Correcting for both the coating and oxide improved the analysis accuracy to better than ±1% down to 7 kV and ~2% at 5 kV, but the error increases strongly below this. The measurement of C in U identified a previously unreported U N6–O4 line interference on the C Kα peak, which can produce over 1% error in the analysis total. Oxide stoichiometry was demonstrated to have only a small impact on quantification. The measurement of the O Kα and U Mα mass absorption coefficients in U as 9,528 and 798 cm2/g, respectively, shows good agreement with recently published values and also produces small differences in a quantification error.

Electron probe microanalysis is a nondestructive technique widely used to determine the elemental composition of bulk samples. This was extended to layered specimens, with the development of appropriate software. The traditional quantification method requires the use of matrix correction procedures based upon models of the ionization depth distribution, the so-called ϕ(ρz) distribution. Most of these models have led to commercial quantification programs but only few of them allow the quantification of layered specimens. Therefore, we developed BadgerFilm, a free open-source thin film program available to the general public. This program implements a documented ϕ(ρz) model as well as algorithms to calculate fluorescence in bulk and thin film samples. Part 1 of the present work aims at describing the operation of the implemented ϕ(ρz) distribution model and validating its implementation against experimental measurements and Monte Carlo simulations on bulk samples. The program has the ability to predict absolute X-ray intensities that can be directly compared to Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the implemented model works very well for bulk materials. And as will be shown in Part 2, BadgerFilm predictions for thin film specimens are also shown to be in good agreements with experimental and Monte Carlo results.

Since the 1960s, thicknesses and compositions of thin-film specimens have been determined by using the nondestructive technique of electron probe microanalysis. This approach, refined in the 1990s, is based upon models of the ionization depth distribution, the so-called ϕ(ρz) distribution, and is capable of analyzing layered specimens. Most of these quantification models have led to commercial programs. However, these programs may have possible limitations: some may not be directly compatible with modern computers, they often are “black boxes” making it difficult to assess the reliability of the results, and they are sometimes expensive enough to restrain many labs from purchasing them. We present a user-friendly, free, open-source program, BadgerFilm, implementing a documented ϕ(ρz) model and algorithms allowing the quantification of stratified samples. The program has the ability to calculate absolute X-ray intensities that can be directly compared with Monte Carlo simulations. We give a detailed explanation for the operation of the employed ϕ(ρz) model in thin films. A wide range of detailed Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data have been used to evaluate and validate the accuracy of the implemented algorithms. BadgerFilm demonstrated excellent quantification results for the films and in many cases for the substrates.

This, the second in a series of articles present a new framework for considering the computation of uncertainty in electron excited X-ray microanalysis measurements, will discuss matrix correction. The framework presented in the first article will be applied to the matrix correction model called “Pouchou and Pichoir's Simplified Model” or simply “XPP.” This uncertainty calculation will consider the influence of beam energy, take-off angle, mass absorption coefficient, surface roughness, and other parameters. Since uncertainty calculations and measurement optimization are so intimately related, it also provides a starting point for optimizing accuracy through choice of measurement design.

One of the limiting factors for the analysis of minor elements in multiphase materials by electron probe microanalysis is the effect of secondary fluorescence (SF), which is not accounted for by matrix corrections. Although the apparent concentration due to SF can be calculated numerically or measured experimentally, detailed investigations of this effect for fine-grained materials are scarce. In this work, we use the Monte Carlo simulation program PENEPMA to examine and correct the effect of SF affecting micron-sized mineral inclusions hosted by other minerals. A concentration profile across an olivine [(Mg,Fe)2SiO4] inclusion in chromite (Fe2+Cr2O4) is measured and used to assess the reliability of calculations, where different boundary geometries are examined. Three application examples are presented, which include the determination of Cr in olivine and serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4] inclusions hosted by chromite and of Fe in quartz (SiO2) inclusions hosted by almandine garnet (Fe3Al2Si3O12). Our results show that neglecting SF leads to concentrations that are overestimated by ~0.1–0.8 wt%, depending on inclusion size. In addition, assuming a straight boundary yields to an underestimation of SF effects by a factor of ~2–4. Because its long-range nature, SF severely compromises trace element analyses even for phases as large as 1 mm in size.

Samples from the sphalerite-dominated zone of a seafloor massive sulfide chimney, the Satanic Mills Chimney of the PACMANUS hydrothermal field, have been investigated to determine the internal macrostructure and microstructure of this zone, the phases present, and the distribution of metals. A combination of electron probe microanalysis, electron backscattered diffraction, and x-ray diffraction has been used. At the macroscale, this zone of the chimney wall is heavily porous and is comprised primarily of sphalerite, enclosing minor chalcopyrite, pyrite, and wurtzite. A Pb–As sulfosalt layer of possible microbial origins is present at the outer edge of the sphalerite matrix, next to a pore. The sphalerite has grown in globules on the order of 300 μm in diameter. At the microscale, the sphalerite features a colloform texture and a duplex-type grain structure consisting of either fine-grain regions in the center surrounded by coarse-grained regions or radiating coarse grains only. Pb- and As-rich bands have been detected in the colloform sphalerite, and growth twins have been observed in both the sphalerite and chalcopyrite crystals. A qualitative description of the growth of a typical globule is given, including nucleation, crystal growth, and solute redistribution.

When selecting a method for determining modal mineralogy and elemental composition of geological samples (e.g., meteorites), a number of factors should be considered, includingthe number of objects or the area to be analyzed; the scale of expected chemical variation; instrument time restrictions; and post-processing time. This study presents a method that minimizes acquisition time while maintaining the ability to distinguish minerals based on combinations of intensities of electron probe micro-analyzer-generated X-ray element maps. While some other methods yield similar outcomes, this method's post-processing utilizes standard parameterized, X-ray intensity “map math” in an algorithm that is adaptable and requires minimal supervision once implemented. This study's minimized supervision in the post-processing of X-ray intensity maps decreases analysis time and its adaptability increases the number of potential applications. The method also facilitates calibration of the exact locations of analysis using laser ablation methods. While the method described here has advantages, the choice of method always depends on the question being asked.

Low voltage electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) of metals can be complicated by the presence of a surface oxide. If a conductive coating is applied, analysis becomes one of a three-layer structure. A method is presented which allows for the coating and oxide thicknesses and the substrate intensities to be determined. By restricting the range of coating and oxide thicknesses, tc and to respectively, x-ray intensities can be parameterized using a combination of linear functions of tc and to. tc can be determined from the coating element k-ratio independently of the oxide thickness. to can then be derived from the O k-ratio and tc. From tc and to the intensity components of the k-ratios from the oxide layer and substrate can each be derived. Modeled results are presented for an Ag on Bi2O3 on Bi system, with tc and to each ranging from 5 to 20 nm, for voltages of 5–20 kV. The method is tested against experimental measurements of Ag- or C-coated samples of polished Bi samples which have been allowed to naturally oxidize. Oxide thicknesses determined both before and after coating with Ag or C are consistent. Predicted Bi Mα k-ratios also show good agreement with EPMA-measured values.

The recent availability of Schottky-type field emission electron microprobes provides incentive to consider analyzing micrometer-sized features. Yet, to quantify sub-micrometer-sized features, the electron interaction volume must be reduced by decreasing accelerating voltage. However, the K lines of the transition elements (e.g., Fe) then cannot be excited, and the L lines must be used. The Fe Lα1,2 line is the most intense of the L series but bonding effects change its atomic parameters because it involves a valence band electron transition. For successful traditional electron probe microanalysis, the mass absorption coefficient (MAC) must be accurately known, but the MAC of Fe Lα1,2 radiation by Fe atoms varies from one Fe-compound to another and is not well known. We show that the conventional method of measuring the MAC by an electron probe cannot be used in close proximity to absorption edges, making its accurate determination impossible. Fortunately, we demonstrate, using a set of Fe–silicide compounds, that it is possible to derive an accurate calibration curve, for a given accelerating voltage and takeoff angle, which can be used to quantify Fe in Fe–silicide compounds. The calibration curve can be applied to any spectrometer without calibration and gives accurate quantification results.

Due to recent advances in modeling the production of characteristic X-rays, Monte Carlo simulation of electron–solid interactions can provide improved quantitative estimates of X-ray intensities for both homogeneous and heterogeneous interaction volumes. In the case of homogeneous materials, these modeled X-ray intensities can predict with excellent accuracy, matrix corrections for arbitrary compositions, arbitrary emission lines, and electron energies. By pre-calculating these Monte Carlo X-ray intensities for pure element standards and a range of compositions of binary systems, we can derive matrix corrections for complex compositions in real-time by parameterizing these k-ratios as the so-called alpha factors. This method allows one to perform Monte Carlo-based bulk matrix corrections in seconds for arbitrary and complex compositions (with two or more elements), by combining these binary alpha factors using the so-called beta expression. We are systematically calculating X-ray intensities for 11 compositions from 1 to 99 wt% for binary pairs of all emitters and absorbers in the periodic table, for the main emission lines (Kα, Kβ, Lα, Lβ, Mα, and Mβ) at beam energies from 5 to 50 keV, using Monte Carlo calculations based on a modified PENELOPE electron-photon transport code, although any other Monte Carlo software could also be utilized. Comparison of k-ratios calculated with the proposed method and experimental k-ratios from the Pouchou and Pichoir database suggest improvements over typical φ(ρz) methods. Additional comparisons with k-ratio measurements from more complex compositions would be ideal, but our testing of the additivity of the beta equation suggests that arbitrary compositions can be handled as well, except in cases of extreme fluorescence or absorption.

Two preferred textures were observed in the Alhama de Murcia Fault rocks: (a) foliated bands (>100 µm thick) rich in well-crystallized dioctahedral micas, quartz, hematite and dolomite; and (b) ultrafine-grained bands (<100 µm thick) made of patches composed of small mica crystals (<15 µm) and dispersed Fe-oxides. In both textures, kaolinite forms intergrowths or patches of randomly oriented crystals filling gaps or opening layers of presumably inherited detrital mica crystals, which is interpreted as an epitaxial growth from fluids. The Na/K ratio of mica crystals in the thin ultrafine-grained bands shows a wider range than the micas from the foliated bands including muscovitic, intermediate Na/K and paragonitic compositions. The absence of the 0.98 nm intermediate peak in the diffractograms indicates that the small micas are submicroscopically paragonite and phengite intergrowths. The d001 values of the K-dioctahedral micas in the <2 µm and whole fractions are clearly different from each other. The d001 values of micas of the <2 µm fraction are larger, indicating a higher K and lower Na content in the small micas. Their composition corresponds to lower temperatures, suggesting their growth during a genetic episode in the fault. The textural relationships indicate a late growth of kaolinite, probably due to the fluid–rock interaction along fault planes and fractures. The neoformed clay minerals might alter the stability of the fault plane. The absence of expandable clay minerals and the relatively high frictional strength of kaolinite under wet conditions might explain the observed velocity-neutral behaviour of this gouge and earthquake propagation towards the surface.

Metal–silicate partitioning studies performed in high-pressure, laser-heated diamond anvil cells (DAC) are commonly used to explore element distribution during planetary-scale core–mantle differentiation. The small run-products contain suitable areas for analysis commonly less than tens of microns in diameter and a few microns thick. Because high spatial resolution is required, quantitative chemical analyses of the quenched phases is usually performed by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Here, EPMA is being used at its spatial limits, and sample thickness and secondary fluorescence effects must be accounted for. By using simulations and synthetic samples, we assess the validity of these measurements, and find that in most studies DAC sample wafers are sufficiently thick to be characterized at 15 kVacc. Fluorescence from metal-hosted elements will, however, contaminate silicate measurements, and this becomes problematic if the concentration contrast between the two phases is in excess of 100. Element partitioning experiments are potentially compromised; we recommend simulating fluorescence and applying a data correction, if required, to such DAC studies. Other spurious analyses may originate from sources external to the sample, as exemplified by 0.5 to >1 wt% of Cu arising from continuum fluorescence of the Cu TEM grid the sample is typically mounted on.

Variegated palaeosols, which formed from weathering of clays, silts and brackish to freshwater limestones, are present in the Late Eocene–Early Oligocene Solent Group of the Hampshire Basin, southern UK. The composition and origin of the clay in three segments of the lower part of the Solent Group have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, microprobe analysis, inductively coupled plasma-mas spectrometry, K/Ar dating, high resolution scanning electron microscopy, analytical transmission electron microscopy and wet chemistry. The detrital clay mineral suite is dominated by illite and smectite with minor kaolinite and chlorite. Seasonal wetting and drying in gley soils has resulted in replacement of smectite by Fe-rich, or illite-rich illitesmectite. Illite has also formed with gypsum and calcite in ephemeral hypersaline alkaline lakes that periodically dried out. This illite may have precipitated directly from solution. X-ray diffraction data and probe analyses indicate that the neoformed illite is Fe-rich. The K and Fe for the illitization are thought to be derived from weathered glauconite reworked from the underlying Bracklesham Group and Barton Beds.

Tourmalines of unusual (mushroom) habit are common in granitic pegmatites of Momeik, northeast of Mogok, Myanmar. Here, we examine a sample of elbaite of significantly different habit, consisting of a series of diverging crystals, resembling a sheaf of wheat and ranging in colour from light purplish-red at the base to dark purplish-red at the tip with a thin green cap at the termination. The crystal structures of eight crystals are refined to R1-indices of ∼2.5% using graphite-monochromated Mo-Kα X-radiation; the same crystals were analysed by electron microprobe. 11B and 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectra were collected on four regions of the wheatsheaf crystal, and show ∼0.3 a.p.f.u. [4]B and <0.1 a.p.f.u. [4]Al in the structure. 57Fe Mössbauerspectr oscopy was done on the dark green rim at the termination of the crystal, showing all Fe in this region (∼0.6 a.p.f.u.) to be Fe2+. Detailed electron-microprobe traverses show that the principal compositional variation involves the substitutions [4]B + YAl → Si + YFe*, where transition metals are present, and [4]B2 + YAl → Si2 + YLi, where transition metals are not present, although several other minor substitutions also affect crystal composition. Successive microscopic bifurcation of crystallites causes divergence of growth directions along the c axis, imparting the overall ‘wheatsheaf’ shape to the crystal aggregate. We suggest that such bifurcation is common in pegmatitic elbaite crystals, resulting in their common divergent habit.

Secondary fluorescence, the final term in the familiar matrix correction triumvirate Z·A·F, is the most challenging for Monte Carlo models to simulate. In fact, only two implementations of Monte Carlo models commonly used to simulate electron probe X-ray spectra can calculate secondary fluorescence—PENEPMA and NIST DTSA-IIa (DTSA-II is discussed herein). These two models share many physical models but there are some important differences in the way each implements X-ray emission including secondary fluorescence. PENEPMA is based on PENELOPE, a general purpose software package for simulation of both relativistic and subrelativistic electron/positron interactions with matter. On the other hand, NIST DTSA-II was designed exclusively for simulation of X-ray spectra generated by subrelativistic electrons. NIST DTSA-II uses variance reduction techniques unsuited to general purpose code. These optimizations help NIST DTSA-II to be orders of magnitude more computationally efficient while retaining detector position sensitivity. Simulations execute in minutes rather than hours and can model differences that result from detector position. Both PENEPMA and NIST DTSA-II are capable of handling complex sample geometries and we will demonstrate that both are of similar accuracy when modeling experimental secondary fluorescence data from the literature.

We propose an original methodology to integrate local measurement for nontrivial object shape. The method employs the distance transform of the object and least-square fitting of numerically computed weighting functions extracted from it. The method is exemplified in the field of chemical engineering by calculating the global metal concentration in catalyst grains from uneven metal distribution profiles. Applying the methodology on synthetic profiles with the help of a very simple deposition model allows us to evaluate the accuracy of the method. For high symmetry objects such as an infinite cylinder, relative errors on global concentration are lower than 1% for well-resolved profiles. For a less symmetrical object, a tetralobe, the best estimator gives a relative error below 5% at the cost of increased measurement time. Applicability on a real case is demonstrated on an aged hydrodemetallation catalyst. Sampling of catalyst grains at the inlet and outlet of the reactor allowed conclusions concerning different reactivity for the trapped metals.
