Ice shelves play an important role in buttressing land ice from reaching the sea, thus restraining the rate of grounded ice loss. Long-period gravity-wave impacts excite vibrations in ice shelves that can expand pre-existing fractures and trigger iceberg calving. To investigate the spatial amplitude variability and propagation characteristics of these vibrations, a 34-station broadband seismic array was deployed on the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) from November 2014 to November 2016. Two types of ice-shelf plate waves were identified with beamforming: flexural-gravity waves and extensional Lamb waves. Below 20 mHz, flexural-gravity waves dominate coherent signals across the array and propagate landward from the ice front at close to shallow-water gravity-wave speeds (~70 m s−1). In the 20–100 mHz band, extensional Lamb waves dominate and propagate at phase speeds ~3 km s−1. Flexural-gravity and extensional Lamb waves were also observed by a 5-station broadband seismic array deployed on the Pine Island Glacier (PIG) ice shelf from January 2012 to December 2013, with flexural wave energy, also detected at the PIG in the 20–100 mHz band. Considering the ubiquitous presence of storm activity in the Southern Ocean and the similar observations at both the RIS and the PIG ice shelves, it is likely that most, if not all, West Antarctic ice shelves are subjected to similar gravity-wave excitation.

Studies of dislocation density evolution are fundamental to improved understanding in various areas of deformation mechanics. Recent advances in cross-correlation techniques, applied to electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) data have particularly shed light on geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) behavior. However, the framework is relatively computationally expensive—patterns are typically saved from the EBSD scan and analyzed offline. A better understanding of the impact of EBSD pattern degradation, such as binning, compression, and various forms of noise, is vital to enable optimization of rapid and low-cost GND analysis. This paper tackles the problem by setting up a set of simulated patterns that mimic real patterns corresponding to a known GND field. The patterns are subsequently degraded in terms of resolution and noise, and the GND densities calculated from the degraded patterns using cross-correlation ESBD are compared with the known values. Some confirmation of validity of the computational degradation of patterns by considering real pattern degradation is also undertaken. The results demonstrate that the EBSD technique is not particularly sensitive to lower levels of binning and image compression, but the precision is sensitive to Poisson-type noise. Some insight is also gained concerning effects of mixed patterns at a grain boundary on measured GND content.

Acquiring an atomic-resolution compositional map of crystalline specimens has become routine practice, thus opening possibilities for extracting subatomic information from such maps. A key challenge for achieving subatomic precision is the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of compositional maps. Here, we report a simple and reliable solution for achieving high-SNR energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy spectrum images for individual atomic columns. The method is based on standard cross-correlation aided by averaging of single-column EDX maps with modifications in the reference image. It produces EDX maps with minimal specimen drift, beam drift, and scan distortions. Step-by-step procedures to determine a self-consistent reference map with a discussion on the reliability, stability, and limitations of the method are presented here.

The work developed in the paper concerns the multivariate fractional Brownian motion (mfBm) viewed through the lens of the wavelet transform. After recalling some basic properties on the mfBm, we calculate the correlation structure of its wavelet transform. We particularly study the asymptotic behaviour of the correlation, showing that if the analyzing wavelet has a sufficient number of null first order moments, the decomposition eliminates any possible long-range (inter)dependence. The cross-spectral density is also considered in a second part. Its existence is proved and its evaluation is performed using a von Bahr–Essen like representation of the function sign(t)|t|α. The behaviour of the cross-spectral density of the wavelet field at the zero frequency is also developed and confirms the results provided by the asymptotic analysis of the correlation.

The transmission of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is influenced by climatic, reservoir and environmental variables. The epidemiology of the disease was studied over a 6-year period in Changsha. Variables relating to climate, environment, rodent host distribution and disease occurrence were collected monthly and analysed using a time-series adjusted Poisson regression model. It was found that the density of the rodent host and multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation index had the greatest effect on the transmission of HFRS with lags of 2–6 months. However, a number of climatic and environmental factors played important roles in affecting the density and transmission potential of the rodent host population. It was concluded that the measurement of a number of these variables could be used in disease surveillance to give useful advance warning of potential disease epidemics.

We study the cross-correlation between X-rays of different energies for the atoll-type source 4U 1608–52 with RXTE, and find the cross-correlation evolutes along the different branches. The anti-correlation is reported from the Galactic black hole candidates and Z-type luminous sources in their hard states. Our results are a little different from the Z-type sources. Here we provide the first evidence that a similar anti-correlated feature can also be found in atoll-type source, and it is not corresponding to the lowest accretion rate.

In nature, sounds from multiple sources, as well as reflections from the surfaces of the physical surroundings, arrive concurrently from different directions at the ears of a listener. Despite the fact that all of these waveforms sum at the eardrums, humans with normal hearing can effortlessly segregate interesting sounds from echoes and other sources of background noises. This paper presents a two-microphone technique for localization of sound sources to effectively guide robotic navigation. Its fundamental structure is adopted from a binaural signal-processing scheme employed in biological systems for the localization of sources using interaural time differences (ITDs). The two input signals are analyzed for coincidences along left/right-channel delay-line pairs. The coincidence time instants are presented as a function of the interaural coherence (IC). Specifically, we build a sphere head model for the selected robot and apply the mechanism of binaural cues selection observed in mammalian hearing system to mitigate the effects of sound echoes. The sound source is found by determining the azimuth at which the maximum of probability density function (PDF) of ITD cues occurs. This eliminates the localization artifacts found during tests. The experimental results of a systematic evaluation demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

The advent of charge-coupled devices (CCD) has significantly extended the horizons offull-field measurement methods in many fields of fundamental and applied sciences,including fluid flow dynamics. One of the major applications of imaging sensors in fluidmechanics is the Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV), which is a non-invasive, fullfield optical measuring technique. Due to recent advances in image processing methods, andin digital imaging, laser and optics DPIV has become a dominant tool for obtainingvelocity information about fluid motion. On the other hand, over the last years,developments in micro- and nanofluidic systems have promised a shrinking of thedesktop-sized chemical and biological devices to microscale size, so a detailedinvestigation of the behaviour of flow inside these microdevices is essential for theoptimum design of microsystems, as well as for an understanding of flow dynamics in micronscales. In this work, the advances in visualization and quantitative measurements of flowvelocity measurements are reviewed and explained.

Neighboring ganglion cells in the retinae of vertebrates show cross-correlation between their impulse trains. Cross-correlation is found both in maintained discharges and during responses to visual stimulation. There has been speculation about the function of this statistical dependence, but little is known about its genesis. This study examines the statistics of the interimpulse intervals preceding and those following impulses that coincide with an impulse in the other train. Short intervals are rarer than expected preceding a coincidence, regardless of the form of the cross-correlation. Short intervals are more common than expected following a coincidence when the cross-correlation is positive, but rarer than expected following coincidences during negative cross-correlation. These results contradict the extant models for cross-correlation, but may be explained by the multiplicative combination of a variable common input and the variability within each cell. In addition, the lag (relative timing of coincident impulses in the two cells) is found to be related to the maintained discharge rates of the cells, implying that the lags may be explained without invoking specific delay circuits.

Visual cortical areas are richly but selectively connected by “patchy” projections. We characterized these connections physiologically with cross-correlograms (CCHs), calculated for neuron pairs or small groups located one each in visual areas 17 and 18 of the cat. The CCHs were then compared to the visuotopic and orientation match of the neurons' receptive fields (RFs).

For both spontaneous and visually driven activity, most non-flat correlograms were centered; i.e. the most likely temporal relationship between spikes in the two areas is a synchronous one. Although spikes are most likely to occur simultaneously, area 17 spikes may occur before area 18 or vice versa, giving the cross-correlogram peak a finite width (temporal dispersion). Cross-correlograms fell into one of three groups according to their full-width at half peak height: 1–8 ms (modal width, 3 ms), 15–65 ms (modal width 30 ms), or 100–1000 ms (modal width 400 ms). These classificatory groups are nonoverlapping; the three types of coupling appeared singly and in combination.

Neurons whose receptive fields (RFs) are nonoverlapping or cross-oriented may yet be coupled, but the coupling is more likely to be the broadest type of coupling than the medium-dispersed type. The sharpest type of coupling is found exclusively between neurons with at least partially overlapping RFs and mostly between neurons whose stimulus orientation preferences matched to within 22.5 deg. The maximum spatial dispersion observed in the RFs of coupled neurons compares well with the maximum divergence seen anatomically in the A18/A17 projection system.

We suggest three different mechanisms to produce each of the three different degrees of observed spatial and temporal coherence. All mechanisms use common input of cortical origin. For medium and broad coupling, this common input arises from cell assemblies split between both sides of the 17/18 projection system, but acting synchronously. Such distributed common-input cell assemblies are a means of overcoming sparse connectivity and achieving synaptic transmission in the pyramidal network.

Simultaneous recordings from relay cells in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and their retinal afferents were used to examine the rules governing the transmission of spikes across the retino-geniculate synapse. Retinal spikes that terminate short retinal interspike intervals are much more likely to be transmitted across the synapse than spikes terminating longer intervals. This facilitation can be observed for interspike intervals as long as 50 ms when retinal firing rates are low, but the range of effective intervals decreases exponentially as retinal firing rate increases. Contribution, the fraction of LGN spikes triggered by an individual retinal afferent, is typically much higher during visual stimulation than during maintained activity, and these differences are unrelated to presynaptic or postsynaptic firing rate. It is suggested that this effect is a manifestation of increased synchronization of spikes among retinal afferents to the geniculate cell during structured visual stimulation, and that this synchronization offers a means of enhancing signal-to-noise ratio at the retino-geniculate synapse. Cross-correlograms between geniculate burst spikes and retinal afferents often contain two distinct peaks; a short latency peak that results from direct coupling between burst spikes and retinal input spikes, and a longer latency peak that represents indirect coupling in which retinal spikes trigger the calcium spike underlying the burst. Direct coupling is most likely to occur for the later spikes in the burst, and is present regardless of whether the calcium spike underlying the burst is triggered by the same or a different retinal afferent. These results further illuminate the relationship between tonic and burst modes of retino-geniculate transmission and indicate that bursts in LGN relay cells can be viewed as a mechanism of signal amplification, producing signals whose timing is potentially related to the temporal structure of a stimulus, independent of presynaptic and postsynaptic firing rate. This mechanism also appears to capitalize on the synchronization that is present among parallel retinal afferents to a geniculate cell.
