Finlayson's squirrel is frugivorous and distributed throughout the tropical seasonal forests of South-East Asia. To understand the resource use of tree squirrels in a tropical forest ecosystem, colour vision and fruit selection of Finlayson's squirrel were investigated. Under laboratory conditions, this species possesses dichromatic colour vision; it can discriminate white, yellow, violet, brown and black versus green similar to leaves, but it cannot discriminate orange and red versus green. In addition, squirrels can discriminate pale pink, pink and dark red versus green but cannot discriminate red versus green due to its similar lightness and chroma. Through field observations, squirrels selected black or brown fruits and fed on the mature seeds although fruits of various colours appear on a tree, such as green, orange, yellow, pink or white ones including immature seeds. Brown, violet or black fruits accounted for 87% of those fruits consumed by these squirrels, whereas those with yellow, orange or red colour accounted for only 7%. The dichromatic colour vision in Finlayson's squirrel may be useful for selecting ripe fruits in preference to unripe ones.

Many insects show a greater attraction to multimodal cues, e.g. odour and colour combined, than to either cue alone. Despite the potential to apply the knowledge to improve control strategies, studies of multiple stimuli have not been undertaken for stored product pest insects. We tested orientation towards a food odour (crushed white maize) in combination with a colour cue (coloured paper with different surface spectral reflectance properties) in three storage pest beetle species, using motion tracking to monitor their behaviour. While the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.), showed attraction to both odour and colour stimuli, particularly to both cues in combination, this was not observed in the bostrichid pests Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (lesser grain borer) or Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (larger grain borer). The yellow stimulus was particularly attractive to S. zeamais, and control experiments showed that this was neither a result of the insects moving towards darker-coloured areas of the arena, nor their being repelled by optical brighteners in white paper. Visual stimuli may play a role in location of host material by S. zeamais, and can be used to inform trap design for the control or monitoring of maize weevils. The lack of visual responses by the two grain borers is likely to relate to their different host-seeking behaviours and ecological background, which should be taken into account when devising control methods.

Observers viewed two side-by-side arrays each of which contained three yellow Munsell papers, three blue, and one neutral Munsell. Each array was illuminated uniformly and independently of the other. The neutral light source intensities were 1380, 125, or 20 lux. All six possible combinations of light intensities were set as illumination conditions. On each trial, observers were asked to rate the dissimilarity between each chip in one array and each chip in the other by using a 30-point scale. Each pair of surfaces in each illumination condition was judged five times. We analyzed this data using non-metric multi-dimensional scaling to determine how light intensity and surface chroma contributed to dissimilarity and how they interacted. Dissimilarities were captured by a three-dimensional configuration in which one dimension corresponded to differences in light intensity.

A previous study identified a significant metamerism in the several editions of the Hardy-Rand-Rittler pseudoisochromatic plates (HRR) but did not proceed to quantify the consequences of that metamerism (Dain, 2004). Metamerism arises from two sources and is almost inevitable when a printed color vision test is reproduced in several editions. Metamerism has two consequences; these are illuminant/source-based changes in performance and changes in performance with observer (less well known) when assessing anomalous trichromats. This study addresses the effects of illuminant/source and observer metamerism on the fourth editions of the HRR. Groups of colors intended to lie on a dichromat confusion line generally remain on a confusion line when the source is changed. The plates appear to be resistant to each form of metamerism, perhaps because the features of the spectral reflectance are similar for figure color and background gray. As a consequence, the clinician needs to be less concerned about using a non-recommended source than was previously believed.

To assess the effects of macular pigment optical density (MPOD) on isoluminant stimuli and to quantify MPOD electrophysiologically, MPOD distribution profiles were obtained in normal subjects using minimum motion and minimum flicker photometry. Isoluminance of VEP stimuli was determined using minimum flicker and tritan confusion lines were determined using a minimum distinct border criterion. Onset–offset and reversal VEPs to isoluminant red/green, blue/green, and subject-specific tritan gratings of different diameters were recorded from the same 14 subjects tested psychophysically. VEPs were additionally recorded to annular gratings. Chromatic VEP selectivity was assessed by Fourier analysis and as an index; onset negativity/(onset negativity + onset positivity). Peak MPOD varied between 0.2–0.8. Chromatic onset VEPs to all isoluminant 3-deg fields were predominantly negative. Larger blue/green and tritan stimuli elicited VEPs with additional positive, achromatic components; for 9-deg gratings, peak MPOD showed negative correlation with the power of the VEP fundamental (r = −0.70) and with the selectivity index (r = −0.83). Annular gratings elicited chromatic-specific B/G VEPs but only when isoluminance was determined for the annulus. Chromatic selectivity loss in VEPs to large B/G or Tritan gratings can be used to estimate subject-specific MPOD. An important implication is that isoluminant Tritan stimuli with short-wavelength components must be restricted in size in order to optimize koniocellular selectivity.

The use of video images in place of natural stimuli in animal behaviour experiments is reviewed. Unlike most other artificial means of stimulus presentation, video stimuli can depict complex moving objects such as other animals, preserving the temporal and spatial patterns of movement precisely as well as colour and sounds for repeated playback. Computer editing can give flexibility and control over all elements of the stimulus. A variety of limitations of video image presentation are also considered. Televisions and video monitors are designed with human vision in mind, and some non-human animals that differ in aspects of visual processing such as their colour vision, critical flicker-fusion threshold, perception of depth and visual acuity, may perceive video images differently to ourselves. The failure of video stimuli to interact with subjects can be a drawback for some studies. For video to be useful, it is important to confirm that the subject animal responds to the image in a comparable way to the real stimulus, and the criteria used to assess this are discussed. Finally, the contribution made by video studies to date in the understanding of animal visual responses is considered, and recommendations as to the future uses of video are made.
