Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted at the Lacombe Research Station to evaluate mixtures of sethoxydim and fluazifop on green foxtail, wild oat, wheat, and barley in canola. In both environments the two herbicides interacted on the grass species in a synergistic manner. Many of the observed responses to mixtures of sethoxydim and fluazifop were 100% greater than those expected assuming an additive interaction between the herbicides. Mixtures with at least 80 g ha-1 of sethoxydim and 80 g ha-1 of fluazifop controlled more than 90% of green foxtail, wild oat, wheat, and barley under field conditions. These experiments indicate that the sethoxydim/fluazifop mixture is both complementary and synergistic. The mixture may allow reduced herbicide application rates and therefore reduced herbicide costs and less potential for negative environmental impact.

Postemergence applications of MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate) for weed control in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were evaluated in the field, greenhouse, and controlled environmental chamber. MSMA controlled weeds better when applied to wheat at the four- to five-leaf stage than when applied at the two- to three-leaf stage. MSMA, tank mixed with barban (4-chloro-2-butynyl-m-chlorocarbanilate) or diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid}, controlled wild oat (Avena fatua L.), green foxtail, [Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv.] and broadleaf weeds better than did MSMA applied alone. Wild oat control with tank-mix applications of MSMA and difenzoquat (1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazolium) was variable. Weed control with MSMA was enhanced by 30 C air temperatures, 90% relative humidity, and adequate soil moisture. A simulated rainfall of 0.5 mm within 0.5 h or 4 mm with 4 hr after application reduced wild oat control with MSMA.

Studies were conducted to determine the usefulness of HOE-39866 (HOE-00661) in chemical fallow systems on the Canadian prairies. HOE-39866 at 0.5 to 1.0 kg ai/ha controlled Russian thistle, kochia, green foxtail, wild oats, and wheat comparable to paraquat, glyphosate, and glyphosate plus the isopropylamine salt of 2,4-D. However, control of barley with HOE-39866 was unacceptable. HOE-39866 was compatible in tank mixtures with ammonium sulfate, paraquat, chlorsulfuron, and metsulfuron. Ammonium sulfate improved weed control when HOE-39866 was applied at 0.25 kg/ha but not at 0.75 kg/ha. Adding paraquat at 0.07 to 0.21 kg ai/ha to HOE-39866 improved control of grass species over HOE-39866 alone. Adding chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron to HOE-39866 provided greater initial control of certain species as well as residual control of many weeds. HOE-39866 alone or in conjunction with other herbicides is an alternative to the herbicides used in chemical fallow systems.

Field studies were undertaken in 1992 and 1993 to investigate the control of wild oat and green foxtail in flax with reduced rates of fluazifop-P and clethodim applied as tank-mixtures. Fluazifop-P plus clethodim at 50 + 18 g ai/ha controlled wild oat and green foxtail and was as effective as full rates of either herbicide applied alone. These rates represent a 20% reduction in total amount of active ingredient required to control wild oat and green foxtail. Application of fluazifop-P, and/or clethodim prior to the 3- to 4-leaf stage failed to control late emerging grass weeds. Application of graminicide mixtures at or after the 3- to 4-leaf stage controlled late emerging grass weeds and did not affect flax yield. When applied late, fluazifop-P at 175 g/ha tended to reduce flax yield, although weed control was acceptable and no foliar injury was observed following treatment. The efficacy of graminicide mixtures was reduced by addition of bromoxynil plus MCPA to the spray mix.

Imazamethabenz is a selective herbicide used to control wild oat in small grains. The effects of rate, volume of carrier, and surfactant concentration on the efficacy of this herbicide in controlling wild oat were studied in field experiments. As each of the variables increased, wild oat control increased; the greatest degree of wild oat growth inhibition occurred at the highest herbicide rate, highest volume of carrier, and highest surfactant concentration.

Barnyardgrass and many broadleaf weeds were severely stunted by POST applications of isoxaben. Most grasses were only moderately affected by isoxaben at rates up to 1 kg/ha. POST activity was enhanced by soil interception, but evident with foliar interception alone. Cell swelling in stems and in interveinal leaf lamina was observed after foliar application. A radiotracer study in redroot pigweed showed that only a small amount (3.3% of applied) of isoxaben entered the leaf following foliar application, and that little (0.08% of applied) isoxaben migrated beyond the point of application. The potential of isoxaben as a POST herbicide may be limited, in part, by poor absorption and translocation.

The effect of exposing tame oat (Avena sativa L. ‘Hudson’) to trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) and triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl) diisopropylthiocarbamate] during seed imbibition was investigated in a growth cabinet at 21 C in the absence of light. Caryopses were imbibed in 0.0, 1.5, and 3.0 ppmv aqueous dilutions of trifluralin and triallate for up to 10 h, after which germination was continued in distilled water. Germination was not affected following imbibition in either herbicide. Both herbicides produced distinct visual symptoms of herbicide injury during subsequent seedling growth. Coleoptile length of 5-day-old seedlings was reduced following imbibition in a 1.5-ppmv dilution of either herbicide. Triallate at 1.5 ppmv resulted in a reduction in shoot dry weight. Both herbicides were largely excluded from embryos of imbibing caryopses. Seedlings were unaffected when cultured from embryos excised from caryopses imbibed in trifluralin and triallate dilutions. Seedling phytotoxic effects resulted from residual activity of trifluralin and triallate retained by the pericarp and testa of imbibed caryopses. Presence of the hull during imbibition decreased the phytotoxic effect of both herbicides on shoot growth. These findings suggest that germinating seedlings of Avena spp. may be affected by trifluralin and triallate at an earlier stage than previously realized.

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of preplant applications of trifluralin on barley stand and yield, and control of grass weeds in field experiments during 1992 and 1993. Factors examined were: (1) crop planting patterns (conventional drill with rows 15 cm apart and deep-seeder drill with rows 25 cm apart), (2) herbicide application times (22 d before sowing and immediately before sowing), and (3) herbicide application. During 1993, hand-weeded plots also were established. Trifluralin applied preplant at 528 g ai/ha reduced weed density and biomass. Weed control was higher under conventional planting than under the deep planting pattern, and there was no effect of the time of application on herbicide efficacy. There was no herbicide injury to the crop, and grain yield was higher in treated than in untreated plots due to successful weed control.

Field experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of fluazifop-P-butyl for the control of green foxtail, wild oat, barley, and wheat in flax as influenced by spray nozzle orientation, time of day, and growth stage. Under drought conditions in 1988, control of wild oat, wheat, and barley with fluazifop-P-butyl was enhanced 75%, 53% and 78%, respectively, when nozzles were oriented to spray forward 45°. Under adequate soil moisture conditions enhancement of control was minimal. Green foxtail control improved when fluazifop-P-butyl was applied from 1700 to 2100 h, but time of day had no effect on control of wild oat, barley, or wheat. Fluazifop-P-butyl effectiveness was reduced when applied 4 d after flax emergence due to late emerging grass seedlings. Green foxtail was the most tolerant to fluazifop-P-butyl, whereas wild oat, wheat, and barley were the most susceptible.

This review considers the development of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes in Australia. Biotypes of the important annual weed species, capeweed, wall barley, and hare barley are resistant to the bipyridylium herbicides paraquat and diquat. These resistant biotypes developed on a small number of alfalfa fields that have a long history of paraquat and diquat use within a distinct geographical area in central western Victoria. The resistant biotypes are controlled by alternative herbicides and pose little practical concern. Some populations of wild oat are resistant to the methyl ester of diclofop. Of greatest concern is the development of cross resistance in biotypes of rigid ryegrass to aryloxyphenoxypropionate, cyclohexanedione, sulfonylurea, and dinitroaniline herbicides. The cross-resistant rigid ryegrass infests crops and pastures at widely divergent locales throughout the cropping zones of southern Australia. The options for control of cross-resistant rigid ryegrass by herbicides are limited. A biotype of rigid ryegrass on railway tracks treated for 10 yr with amitrole plus atrazine has resistance to amitrole and atrazine and other triazine, triazinone, and phenylurea herbicides. Management tactics for cross resistance are discussed.

Field experiments were conducted at the Lacombe Research Station from 1989 to 1991 to determine the influence of various adjuvants on sethoxydim activity. In all experiments sethoxydim was applied at 100 g ai ha-1 to green foxtail, wheat, wild oat, and barley seeded in a canola crop. Of the four grass species, green foxtail was the most susceptible and barley was the least susceptible to sethoxydim. CC 16255 was the most effective adjuvant followed by either of two sources of ammonium sulphate (liquid or granular) and then Merge. Liquid and granular forms of ammonium sulphate were equally effective in enhancing sethoxydim activity. Several other adjuvants, including Enhance, Savol, and XE 1167, were moderately effective in the enhancement of sethoxydim activity. Adding Canplus 411 to Merge was not usually beneficial, but additions of Canplus 411 to Enhance often increased sethoxydim activity compared with sethoxydim and Enhance alone. Agral 90 and LI-700 were of little or no value as adjuvants with sethoxydim.

The control of wild oat, volunteer wheat, and volunteer barley in a flax crop with sethoxydim was enhanced 20 to 27% by orienting the spray nozzles forward 45°. Control of annual grasses was not influenced by the time of day sethoxydim was applied. However, injury to flax from a tank mixture of sethoxydim and bromoxynil/MCPA (1:1) was greatest when applied between 0500 and 1100 h, and least when applied between 1500 and 2300 h. Flax injury and reduced seed yields also resulted when sethoxydim was applied when air temperatures exceeded 30 C regardless of stage of crop growth.

A weed survey system methodology was developed and used annually for 4 yr in the province of Saskatchewan. Based on a stratified random sampling procedure, fields were selected in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), rye (Secale cereale L.), rape (Brassica napus L., Brassica campestris L.), and flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) crops. The boundaries of the 43 agricultural extension districts in the province formed the strata. The provincial agricultural extension service provided staff to conduct the survey. Computer processing of the data enabled reports, containing summary tables and distribution maps, to be distributed to extension, research, and industry personnel within 3 months after completion of the field survey. The field surveys were conducted late in the growing season before harvest commenced; hence, the weed populations consisted of species that had been present during the early part of the growing season and may have contributed to yield losses. During the 4 yr of the survey, weeds were counted in 4423 fields. Of the 164 species recorded, 97 species occurred in more than three fields. Only 29 species were encountered frequently in the fields. Green foxtail [Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv. # SETVI), wild buckwheat (Polygonum convolvulus L. # POLCO), and wild oat (Avena fatua L. # AVEFA) were the top three species based on a ranking system using a measure called relative abundance.

A seed remover using a modified water-spray system was constructed to separate weed seeds rapidly and effectively from a silt loam soil A 1-kg soil sample can be washed through the seed remover in 6 min. Using a 500-μ mesh sieve, only 70% of small shepherdspurse seeds were recovered, while 100% of larger seeds of henbit, curly dock, wild oats, and downy brome were recovered. The modified seed remover system reduced the required man-hours by more than 50% compared to previous systems.

Tillage and pendimethalin either alone or in combination were compared for weed management in two potato cultivars. The best weed management program consisted of a combination of pendimethalin and tillage. Pendimethalin alone did not adequately control weeds. Multiple cultivations gave better control than pendimethalin alone but not as good as pendimethalin and cultivation combined. The net returns using tillage, pendimethalin, and tillage plus pendimethalin for weed control averaged –$86, –$208, and $ 143/ha, respectively. Independent of their effect on weeds, cultivation had a significant negative effect and pendimethalin a significant positive effect on potato yields. Each cultivation reduced yields by 1.7% and pendimethalin increased yields by 4%. The cultivar ‘Red Pontiac’ was a better competitor with weeds than ‘Red Norland’.

Field experiments were conducted at two locations during 1984 and 1985 to determine how time of wild oats and wild mustard control influenced spring wheat yield and net economic return. Wheat yield and economic return were greatest when both weed species were controlled with diclofop plus bromoxynil at the 2-leaf wheat stage. Delaying the application of herbicides or controlling only wild oats with diclofop or only wild mustard with MCPA reduced wheat yield and economic benefit from the herbicide treatment. Wild oats and wild mustard competed equally for limiting growth factors in a greenhouse experiment.

Experiments were conducted in controlled environmental chambers to determine the influence of temperature on the phytotoxicity of seven soil-applied herbicides. Diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid} soil incorporated or surface applied, was more toxic to wild oat (Avena fatua L.) shoots at 10 and 17 C than at 24 C. Efficacy of diclofop was enhanced with soil incorporation. Diclofop toxicity to wild oat roots was not influenced by a change in temperature. EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) stimulated sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L. ‘American Crystal Hybrid B’) shoot dry weight production at 10 C and caused dry weight reduction at 24 C. Atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] toxicity to barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ‘Larker’) and alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] toxicity to oats (Avena sativa L. ‘Chief’) increased with increased temperature from 10 to 17 C. Temperatures within the range of 10 to 24 C did not affect trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) toxicity to barley or BAY-5653 [N-(2-benzothiazolyl)-N-methylurea] or chloamben (3-amino-2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid) toxicity to oats.

Reaction of some wild oat (Avena fatua L. ♯4 AVEFA) populations to the herbicide triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl)diisopropylthiocarbamate] was investigated in a controlled-environment chamber. Under specified conditions, 1.0 mg active ingredient of triallate incorporated in 1 kg of soil was a satisfactory diagnostic rate for 14-day-old seedlings. Five seedling growth parameters were studied. These parameters were emergence, survival to produce first leaf, mesocotyl length, first-leaf length, and seedling height. Of these, mesocotyl length was least affected by triallate treatment, and significant differences in variability for triallate reaction were found within and among historically triallate unexposed, as well as exposed populations. Within-population variation for seedling emergence and survival was higher in unexposed than in exposed populations. Populations with recurrent exposure to triallate were more tolerant to the herbicide under experimental conditions than historically unexposed populations. Triallate-tolerant lines were identified which were tolerant to two other common wild oat herbicides.

Recently, roundleaved mallow, redroot pigweed, and annual smartweed species have become problems for flax producers in the Canadian prairies. The use of thifensulfuron to enhance weed control with commonly used herbicide mixtures was tested at Indian Head, SK and Morden, MB. Visible crop injury and reduced height, yield, and quality occurred at rates as low as 0.5–1.0 g/ha. Improved control of broadleaf weeds was not consistent and antagonism of grassy weed control with sethoxydim occurred.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted from 1987 to 1990 at the Lacombe Research Station to determine the influence of ammonium sulfate (AS) on various grass control herbicides. In field studies, AS had slight or no effects on the phytotoxicity of aryloxyphenoxypropanoate (APP) herbicides (fenoxaprop, fluazifop, haloxyfop, and quizalofop). The largest AS-mediated increase in APP herbicide phytotoxicity was 19% (based on fresh weight reduction) for wild oat with haloxyfop at 50 g/ha. AS consistently mediated increases in cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicide phytotoxicity. With added AS, barley fresh weight was reduced 75% (1988) with BAS 517 at 50 g/ha, and 100% (1990) with clethodim at 25 g/ha. Greenhouse studies confirmed field studies, but differences were less substantial and consistent. It is suggested that APP herbicides are either less susceptible to UV degradation than CHD herbicides, and/or that APP herbicides may penetrate plant cuticles quickly enough to nullify any protection from UV degradation that AS might provide via rapid absorption.
