The study of very short-period contact binaries provides an important laboratory in which the most important and problematic astrophysical processes of stellar evolution take place. Short-period contact systems, such as CC Com, are particularly important for binary evolution. Close binary systems, especially those with multiple system members, have significant period variations, angular momentum loss mechanisms predominance, and pre-merger stellar evolution, making them valuable astrophysical laboratories. In this study, observations of CC Com, previously reported as a binary system, and new observations from the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) and the space-based telescope TESS have revealed that there is a third object with a period of about eight years and a fourth object with a period of about a century orbiting the binary system. From simultaneous analysis of all available light curves and radial velocities, the sensitive orbital and physical parameters of the system components are derived. The orbital parameters of the components are P$_\mathrm{A}=0.2206868 \pm 0.0000002$ days, P$_\mathrm{B}=7.9\pm0.1$ yr, P$_\mathrm{C}=98\pm5$ yr, $e_3$ = 0.06, $e_4$ = 0.44 and the physical parameters as M$_\mathrm{A1}=0.712\pm0.009$ M$_{\odot}$, M$_\mathrm{ A2}=0.372\pm0.005$ M$_{\odot}$, $m_{B;i^{\prime}=90^\circ}=0.074$ M$_{\odot}$, $m_{C;i^{\prime}=90^\circ}=0.18$ M$_{\odot}$, R$_\mathrm{A1}=0.693\pm0.006$ R$_{\odot}$, R$_\mathrm{A2}=0.514\pm0.005$ R$_{\odot}$, L$_\mathrm{A1}$ = 0.103 L$_\odot$, L$_\mathrm{A2}$ = 0.081 L$_\odot$. Finally, the evolutionary status of the multiple system CC Com and its component stars is discussed.

The formation of multiples has seen some significant progress over the past years mainly due to the advent and the expansion of high-angular resolution facilities. Star-forming regions are the laboratories where massive stars can be caught right after their formation phase. Still, the observational constraints and the properties of young multiple systems are poorly documented. These proceedings contain recent results about the multiplicity properties of six young O-type stars in the M17 star-forming region, observed by the means of near-IR interferometric observations, which have provided insight into the origin of massive close binaries in a cluster environment.

Massive stars play crucial roles in astrophysical settings across cosmic history, and thus it is a fundamental problem to understand whether their formation processes are universal or diverse in various galactic environments. In particular, metallicity is the essential characteristic of cosmic evolution. Our theoretical studies have suggested some degrees of metallicity dependence of massive star formation. In the extremely metal-poor case of , protostellar disks are significantly unstable, and the photoionization feedback is more efficient. We also execute an ALMA survey targeting massive protostars in the Large Magellanic Clouds (LMC) with . We found that the outflow properties of LMC protostars (mass, momentum, energy) are consistent with those of Galactic protostars, suggesting the universality of massive star formation at least in the range of .

One of the big challenges for 21st century stellar astrophysics is the impact of binary interactions on stellar evolution. Such interactions are believed to play a key role in the death throes of 1-8 M⊙ stars, as they evolve from the AGB stars into Planetary Nebulae. X-ray surveys of UV-emitting AGB stars show that ∼40% of objects with FUV emission and GALEX FUV/NUV flux ratios ≳0.2 have variable X-ray emission characterized by very high temperatures (Tx∼35-160 MK) and luminosities (Lx∼0.002-0.2L⊙). We hypothesize that such AGB stars have accretion and (accretion-powered) outflows associated with a close binary companion. UV spectroscopy with HST/STIS of our brightest object (Y Gem) shows the presence of infalling and outflowing gas, providing direct kinematic confirmation of this hypothesis. However, the UV-emitting AGB star population is dominated by objects with little or no FUV emission, and we do not know whether the UV emission from these is intrinsic to the AGB star or extrinsic (i.e., due to binarity). Here we present the first results from a large grid of simple chromospheric models to help discriminate between the intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of UV emission for AGB stars.

Astrophysical outflows treated initially as spherically symmetric often show evidence for asymmetry once seen at higher resolution. The preponderance of aspherical and multipolar planetary nebulae (PN) and pre-planetary nebulae (PPN) was evident after many observations from the Hubble Space Telescope. Binary interactions have long been thought to be essential for shaping asymmetric PN/PPN, but how? PPN are the more kinematically demanding of the two, and warrant particular focus. I address how progress from observation and theory suggests two broad classes of accretion driven PPN jets: one for wider binaries (PPN-W) where the companion is outside the outer radius of the giant and accretes via Roche lobe overflow, and the other which occurs in the later stages of CE for close binaries (PPN-C). The physics within these scenarios connects to progress and open questions about the role and origin of magnetic fields in the engines and in astrophysical jets more generally.

Interacting binaries within a common envelope, wherein the primary is a red giant are believed to result in a recently identified evolutionary class – the dusty post-RGB stars. Our SED modeling of eight post-RGBs in the LMC indicates the presence of geometrically thick disks with substantial opening angle in addition to the outer shells. We estimated the total dust mass (and gas mass assuming gas-to-dust ratio) in the disks and shells and set constraints on the dust grain compositions and sizes. The only known Galactic object of this class is the Boomerang nebula. Additionally, we present a DUSTY model of the Boomerang that can serve as a template for 2D modeling of the object using RADMC-3D. 2D modeling is essential to dissect the morphology of the spatially-unresolved post-RGBs in the LMC. These models may then be tested with future HST and ALMA imaging, together with JWST spectroscopy of these objects.

. High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB) have been revealed by a wealth of multi-wavelength observations, from X-ray to optical and infrared domain. After describing the 3 different kinds of HMXB, we focus on 3 HMXB hosting supergiant stars: IGR J16320-4751, IGR J16465-4507 and IGR J16318-4848, respectively called “The Good”, “The Bad” and “The Ugly”. We review in these proceedings what the observations of these sources have brought to light concerning our knowledge of HMXB, and what part still remains in the dark side. Many questions are still pending, related to accretion processes, stellar wind properties in these massive and active stars, and the overall evolution due to transfer of mass and angular momentum between the companion star and the compact object. Future observations should be able to answer these questions, which constitute the dark side of HMXB.

X-ray binaries with black hole (BH) accretors and massive star donors at short orbital periods of a few days can evolve into close binary BH (BBH) systems that merge within the Hubble time. From an observational point of view, upon the Roche-lobe overflow such systems will most likely appear as ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). To study this connection, we compute the mass transfer phase in systems with BH accretors and massive star donors (M > 15 Mʘ) at various orbital separations and metallicities. In the case of core-hydrogen and core-helium burning donors (cases A and C of mass transfer) we find the typical duration of super-Eddington mass transfer of up to 106 and 105 yr, with rates of 10−6 and 10−5Mʘ yr-1, respectively. Given that roughly 0.5 ULXs are found per unit of star formation rate, we estimate the rate of BBH mergers from stable mass transfer evolution to be at most 10 Gpc−3 yr−1.

PSR J1913+1102 is a double neutron star system (DNS) discovered in the Pulsar Arecibo L-band Feed Array survey. We have now very precisely measured the rate of advance of periastron for the system and the Einstein delay. From general relativity, this results in precise mass measurements: 1.65 ± 0.05 and 1.24 ± 0.05 M⊙ for the pulsar and neutron-star companion, respectively. This makes PSR J1913+1102 both the most massive double neutron star system known, and the most asymmetric in mass among compact DNS binaries. This asymmetry will allow for stringent limits on the effects of dipolar gravitational-wave radiation, predicted by alternative theories of gravity, as well as insight into heavy-element production from the eventual merger of this system and others like it. Further observations will also tighten constraints on formation and evolution models; this is crucial for understanding the DNS population, for which there are relatively few mass measurements.

We present results of a systematic and detailed stellar evolution study of binary mergers for blue supergiant (BSG) progenitors of Type II supernovae, particularly for SN 1987A. We are able to reproduce nearly all observational aspects of the progenitor of SN 1987A, Sk –69 °202, such as its position in the HR diagram, the enrichment of helium and nitrogen in the triple-ring nebula and its lifetime before its explosion. We build our evolutionary model based on the merger model of Podsiadlowski et al. (1992), Podsiadlowski et al. (2007) and empirically explore an initial parameter consisting of primary masses, secondary masses and different depths up to which the secondary penetrates the He core during the merger. The evolution of the post-merger star is continued until just before iron-core collapse. Of the 84 pre-supernova models (16 M⊙ − 23 M⊙) computed, the majority of the pre-supernova models are compact, hot BSGs with effective temperature >12 kK and 30 R⊙ − 70 R⊙ of which six match nearly all the observational properties of Sk –69 °202.

Possible formation mechanisms of massive close binary black holes that can merge in the Hubble time to produce powerful gravitational wave bursts detected during advanced LIGO O1 science run are briefly discussed. The pathways include the evolution from field low-metallicity massive binaries, the dynamical formation in globular clusters and primordial black holes. Low effective black hole spins inferred for LIGO GW150914 and LTV151012 events are discussed. Population synthesis calculations of the expected spin and chirp mass distributions from the standard field massive binary formation channel are presented for different metallicities (from zero-metal Population III stars up to solar metal abundance). We conclude that that merging binary black holes can contain systems from different formation channels, discrimination between which can be made with increasing statistics of mass and spin measurements from ongoing and future gravitational wave observations.

The architecture of many exoplanetary systems is different from the solar system, with exoplanets being in close orbits around their host stars and having orbital periods of only a few days. We can expect interactions between the star and the exoplanet for such systems that are similar to the tidal interactions observed in close stellar binary systems. For the exoplanet, tidal interaction can lead to circularization of its orbit and the synchronization of its rotational and orbital period. For the host star, it has long been speculated if significant angular momentum transfer can take place between the planetary orbit and the stellar rotation. In the case of the Earth-Moon system, such tidal interaction has led to an increasing distance between Earth and Moon. For stars with Hot Jupiters, where the orbital period of the exoplanet is typically shorter than the stellar rotation period, one expects a decreasing semimajor axis for the planet and enhanced stellar rotation, leading to increased stellar activity. Also excess turbulence in the stellar convective zone due to rising and subsiding tidal bulges may change the magnetic activity we observe for the host star. I will review recent observational results on stellar activity and tidal interaction in the presence of close-in exoplanets, and discuss the effects of enhanced stellar activity on the exoplanets in such systems.

Common envelopes (CE) are of broad interest as they represent one method by which binaries with initially long-period orbits of a few years can be converted into short-period orbits of a few hours. Despite their importance, the brief lifetimes of CE phases make them difficult to directly observe. Nevertheless, CE interactions are potentially common, can produce a diverse array of nebular shapes, and can accommodate current post-AGB and planetary nebula outflow constraints. Here, I discuss ongoing theoretical and computational work on CEs and speculate on what lies ahead for determining accurate outcomes of this elusive phase of evolution.

We propose searching for isolated stellar-mass black hole (BH) candidates based on the fact that more than 50% of radio pulsars have originated in binary systems, where the other component could have evolved into a BH prior to the second supernova event of the system, which caused its disruption. We selected isolated, relatively young radio pulsars with known parallaxes and proper motions and traced their trajectories back to their presumed birth locations. These locations were then analyzed for possible BH candidates based on the available positional, photometric, and spectral data. We present the first results for 2 pulsars, J0139+5814 and J0922+0638. Seven BH candidates were selected for further analysis.

Tidal dissipation in stars is one of the key physical mechanisms that drive the evolution of binary and multiple stars. As in the Earth oceans, it corresponds to the resonant excitation of their eigenmodes of oscillation and their damping. Therefore, it strongly depends on the internal structure, rotation, and dissipative mechanisms in each component. In this work, we present a local analytical modeling of tidal gravito-inertial waves excited in stellar convective and radiative regions respectively. This model allows us to understand in details the properties of the resonant tidal dissipation as a function of the excitation frequencies, the rotation, the stratification, and the viscous and thermal properties of the studied fluid regions. Then, the frequencies, height, width at half-height, and number of resonances as well as the non-resonant equilibrium tide are derived analytically in asymptotic regimes that are relevant in stellar interiors. Finally, we demonstrate how viscous dissipation of tidal waves leads to a strongly erratic orbital evolution in the case of a coplanar binary system. We characterize such a non-regular dynamics as a function of the height and width of resonances, which have been previously characterized thanks to our local fluid model.

To inspire and provoke lively discussions, I argue that the accuracy of the basic physical properties of stars, based on analyses of well-observed detached binaries, might be worse than usually believed. I offer some ways how to deal with the situation. I end with a few comments on the studies of extra-solar planets.

In the framework of the EVRENA project, high-resolution spectra of northern eclipsing close binaries in stellar groups are obtained with the HERMES Echelle spectrograph at the Mercator telescope (Roque de los Muchachos Observatory). This contribution gives the first results on DV Camelopardalis.

The current direct observations of brown dwarfs and exoplanets have been obtained using instruments not specifically designed for overcoming the large contrast ratio between the host star and any wide-separation faint companions. However, we are about to witness the birth of several new dedicated observing platforms specifically geared towards high contrast imaging of these objects. The Gemini Planet Imager, VLT-SPHERE, Subaru HiCIAO, and Project 1640 at the Palomar 5m telescope will return images of numerous exoplanets and brown dwarfs over hundreds of observing nights in the next five years. Along with diffraction-limited coronagraphs and high-order adaptive optics, these instruments also will return spectral and polarimetric information on any discovered targets, giving clues to their atmospheric compositions and characteristics. Such spectral characterization will be key to forming a detailed theory of comparative exoplanetary science which will be widely applicable to both exoplanets and brown dwarfs. Further, the prevalence of aperture masking interferometry in the field of high contrast imaging is also allowing observers to sense massive, young planets at solar system scales (~3–30 AU)— separations out of reach to conventional direct imaging techniques. Such observations can provide snapshots at the earliest phases of planet formation—information essential for constraining formation mechanisms as well as evolutionary models of planetary mass companions. As a demonstration of the power of this technique, I briefly review recent aperture masking observations of the HR 8799 system. Moreover, all of the aforementioned techniques are already extremely adept at detecting low-mass stellar companions to their target stars, and I present some recent highlights.
