Prolate rotation (i.e. rotation around the long axis) has been reported for two Local Group dwarf galaxies: Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal satellite of M31, and Phoenix, a transition type dwarf galaxy. The prolate rotation may be an exceptional indicator of a past major merger between dwarf galaxies. We showed that this type of rotation cannot be obtained in the tidal stirring scenario, in which the satellite is transformed from disky to spheroidal by tidal forces of the host galaxy. However, we successfully reproduced the observed Andromeda II kinematics in controlled, self-consistent simulations of mergers between equal-mass disky dwarf galaxies on a radial or close-to-radial orbit. In simulations including gas dynamics, star formation and ram pressure stripping, we are able to reproduce more of the observed properties of Andromeda II: the unusual rotation, the bimodal star formation history and the spatial distribution of the two stellar populations, as well as the lack of gas. We support this scenario by demonstrating the merger origin of prolate rotation in the cosmological context for sufficiently resolved galaxies in the Illustris large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulation.

Dwarf galaxies in the Local Group (LG) represent a distinct as well as diverse family of tracers of the earliest phases of galaxy assembly and the processing resulting from galactic harrassment. Their stellar populations can be resolved and used as probes of the evolution of their host galaxy. In this regard, we present the first reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of them using the most evolved AGB stars that are long period variable (LPV). LPV stars trace stellar populations as young as ∼ 30 Myr to as old as the oldest globular clusters. For the nearby, relatively massive and interacting gas-rich dwarf galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds, we found that the bulk of the stars formed ∼ 10 Gyr ago for the LMC, while the strongest episode of star formation in the SMC occurred a few Gyr later. A peak in star formation around 0.7 Gyr ago in both Clouds is likely linked to their recent interaction. The Andromeda satellite pair NGC147/185 show different histories; the main epoch of star formation for NGC 185 occurred 8.3 Gyr ago, followed by a much lower, but relatively constant star formation rate (SFR). In the case of NGC 147, the SFR peaked only 6.9 Gyr ago, staying intense until ∼ 3 Gyr ago. Star formation in the isolated gas-rich dwarf galaxy IC 1613 has proceeded at a steady rate over the past 5 Gyr, without any particular dominant epoch. Due to lack of sufficient data, we have conducted an optical monitoring survey at the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) of 55 dwarf galaxies in the LG to reconstruct the SFH of them uniformly. The observations are made over ten epochs, spaced approximately three months apart, as the luminosity of LPV stars varies on timescales of months to years. The system of galactic satellites of the large Andromeda spiral galaxy (M31) forms one of the key targets of our monitoring survey. We present the first results in the And I dwarf galaxy, where we discovered 116 LPVs among over 10,000 stars.

Dwarf galaxies make ideal laboratories to test galaxy evolution paradigms and cosmological models. Detailed studies of dwarfs across the spectrum allow us to gauge the efficacy of astrophysical processes at play in the lowest mass halos such as gas accretion, feedback, turbulence and chemical enrichment. Future observational studies will deliver unprecedented insights on the orbits of dwarf companions around the Milky Way, on their star formation histories and on the 3-D internal motions of their stars. Over large volumes, we will assess the impact of local environment on baryon cycling and star formation laws, leading to a full picture of the evolution of dwarfs across cosmic time. In combination, future discoveries promise to trace the history of assembly within the Local Group and beyond, probe how stars form under pristine conditions, and test models of structure formation on small scales.

Using our HST/ACS observations of the recently found isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we homogeneously measured their star formation histories (SFHs). We determined SF rate as a function of time, as well as age and metallicity of the stellar populations. All objects demonstrate complex SFH, with a significant portion of stars formed 10–13 Gyr ago. Nevertheless, stars of middle ages (1–8 Gyr) are presented. In order to understand how the SF parameters influence the evolution of dSphs, we also studied a sample of nearest dSphs in different environment: isolated (d < 2 Mpc); beyond the Local Group virial radius (but within the LG zero velocity sphere); and the satellites of M31 located within the virial zone (300 kpc). Using archival HST/ACS observations, we measured their SFHs. A comparative analysis of the parameters obtained give us a possibility to distinguish a possible effect of the spatial segregation on the dSphs evolution scenario.

The effects of metallicity on both the dust production and mass loss of evolved stars have consequences for stellar masses, stellar lifetimes, progenitors of core-collapse SNe, and the origin of dust in the ISM. With the DUST in Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer (DUSTiNGS) survey, we have discovered samples of dusty evolved AGB stars out to the edge of the Local Group with metallicities down to 0.6% solar. This makes them the nearest analogs of AGB stars in high-redshift galaxies. We present new infrared light curves of the dustiest AGB stars in 10 galaxies from the DUSTiNGS survey and show how the infrared Period-Luminosity (PL) relation is affected by dust and metallicity. These results have implications for the efficiency of AGB dust production at high-redshift and for the use of the Mira PL relation as a distance indicator.

We present the status of an ongoing project to map the detailed chemical abundances of stars across the main body of the Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph). The Sgr dSph is the closest known dwarf galaxy, and is being tidally destroyed by its interaction with the Milky Way (MW), leaving behind a massive stellar stream. Sgr dSph is a chemically outstanding object, with peculiar abundance ratios, clear center-outskirts abundance gradients, and spanning more than 3 orders of magnitude in metallicity. We present here detailed abundances from UVES@VLT spectra for more than 50 giants across 8 fields along the major and minor axes of Sgr dSph, and 5 more outside the galaxy main body, but possibly associated to its stellar stream.

Stars are the main ingredients of galaxies, and the sites of the creation of most chemical elements in our universe. The knowledge that we gain from studying nearby resolved stellar populations assists directly our ability to measure the properties of distant galaxies. The overall objective of this project is to study galaxy formation and evolution in a complete environment of the dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, by using the same methods for all of them. For that purpose, we used the INT to conduct a monitoring survey of the majority of Local-Group dwarf galaxies in order to identify the most evolved AGB stars that are long-period variables (LPV). LPV stars reach their maximum brightness amplitudes at optical wavelengths, owing to changes in temperature. They trace stellar populations as young as ∼30 Myr up to as old as ∼10 Gyr, and identifying them is one of the best ways of reconstructing star-formation history using a method that we have developed and applied successfully to other Local-Group galaxies. Since the luminosity variations span 100–1000 days, we planned observations over 10 epochs, spaced ∼3 months apart; 9 epochs of data have so far been obtained.

Is M31 going to collide with the Milky Way, or spiral around it? Determining the gravitational potential in the Local Group has been a challenge since it requires 3D space velocities and orbits of the members, and most objects have only had line-of-sight velocities measured. Compared to the less massive group members, the transverse velocity of M31 is of great interest, as after the Milky Way, M31 is the most dominant constituent and dynamic force in the Local Group. Proper motion studies of M31 are preferentially done using masers, as continuum sources are much weaker, and are enabled through the high angular resolution provided by VLBI in the radio regime. The challenges of achieving high astrometric accuracy at high VLBI frequencies (> 20 GHz) makes observations at lower frequencies attractive, as long as sufficient angular resolution is obtained. In particular, we have discovered 6.7 GHz methanol masers in M31 using the VLA, and here we will address their feasibility as VLBI proper motion targets using a set of global VLBI observations.

Understanding the distribution of gas in and around galaxies is vital for our interpretation of galaxy formation and evolution. As part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) we have observed the neutral hydrogen (HI) gas in and around the nearby Local Group galaxy M33 to a greater depth than previous observations. As part of this project we investigated the absence of optically detected dwarf galaxies in its neighbourhood, which is contrary to predictions of galaxy formation models. We observed 22 discrete clouds, 11 of which were previously undetected and none of which have optically detected counterparts. We find one particularly interesting hydrogen cloud, which has many similar characteristics to hydrogen distributed in the disk of a galaxy. This cloud, if it is at the distance of M33, has a HI mass of around 107 M⊙ and a diameter of 18 kpc, making it larger in size than M33 itself.

We present new results from a comparative analysis of the resolved giant molecular cloud (GMC) populations in six nearby galaxies. We show that the GMCs in denser environments–M51, the centre of NGC6946–have greater CO surface brightness and higher velocity dispersions relative to their size than GMCs in less dense environments. We find systematic differences in the GMC mass distribution among galaxies, such that more of the molecular gas in the low-mass galaxies (M33, the Large Magellanic Cloud) and the outer disk of M31 is located in low mass clouds. Using the number density of GMCs in the interarm regions of M51, we argue that GMC destruction in this region is regulated by shear, and that cloud lifetimes there are finite and short, ~20 to 30 Myr. Our results indicate the importance of galactic environment on the evolution of GMCs, and on a galaxy's global pattern of star formation.

Cosmic rays fill up the entire volume of galaxies, providing an important source of heating and ionisation of the interstellar medium, and may play a significant role in the regulation of star formation and galactic evolution. Diffuse emissions from radio to high-energy γ-rays (>100 MeV) arising from various interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium, interstellar radiation field, and magnetic field, are currently the best way to trace the intensities and spectra of cosmic rays in the Milky Way and other galaxies. In this contribution, I describe our recent work to model the full spectral energy distribution of galaxies like the Milky Way from radio to γ-ray energies. The application to other galaxies, in particular the Magellanic Clouds and M31 that are now resolved in high-energy γ-rays by the Fermi-LAT, is also discussed.

Multi-epoch JHKS photometry is used to identify large amplitude variables and to study the AGB population of NGC 6822. 50 Mira variables, ranging in period from 128 to 998 days, have been identified. The majority of these are around 1 to 4 Gyr old, but a significantly younger component is also identified.

The chemical abundances in the atmosphere of a star provide unique information about the gas from which that star formed, and, modulo processes that are not important for the vast majority of stars, such as mass transfer in close binary systems, are conserved through a star's life. Correlations between chemistry and kinematics have been used for decades to trace dynamical evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy. I discuss how it should be possible to refine and extend such analyses, provided planned large-scale deep imaging surveys have matched spectroscopic surveys.

Determining the kinematics of the dwarf Spheroidal galaxies (dSph) satellites of the Milky Way (MW) is crucial to estimate the mass of our galaxy, to understand its formation process and that of its satellites, to explain the origin of stellar streams in the MW's halo that seem to be related to these satellites, and to understand the role of tidal interactions in the evolution and star formation history of low mass galaxies and of the halo of our Galaxy. In what follows we briefly explain a ground-based astrometric project that will have an impact on these issues, and present some preliminary results.

We present Keck/HIRES spectra of six metal-poor stars in two of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way, Ursa Major II and Coma Berenices, and a Magellan/MIKE spectrum of a star in the classical dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) Sculptor. Our data include the first high-resolution spectroscopic observations of extremely metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < −3.0) not belonging to the Milky Way (MW) stellar halo field population. We obtain abundance measurements and upper limits for up to 26 elements between carbon and europium. The stars span a range of −3.8 < [Fe/H] < −2.3, with the ultra-faints having large spreads in Fe. A comparison with MW halo stars of similar metallicity reveals substantial agreement between the abundance patterns of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies and Sculptor and the MW halo for the light, α and iron-peak elements (C to Zn). This agreement contrasts with the results of earlier studies of more metal-rich stars (−2.5 ≲[Fe/H]≲ −1.0) in more luminous dwarfs, which found significant abundance discrepancies with respect to the MW halo data. The abundances of neutron-capture elements (Sr to Eu) in all three galaxies are extremely low, consistent with the most metal-poor halo stars, but not with the typical halo abundance pattern at [Fe/H]≳ −3.0. Our results are broadly consistent with a galaxy formation model which predicts that massive dwarf galaxies are the source of the metal-rich component ([Fe/H]≳ −2.5) of the MW inner halo, but we propose that dwarf galaxies similar to the dSphs are the primary contributors to the metal-poor end of the metallicity distribution of the MW outer halo.

We present a new method to solve for the star-formation history (SFH) of a complex stellar population system from the analysis of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). The SFH is obtained in four steps: i) computing a synthetic CMD, ii) simulating observational effects, iii) parameterization and sampling of the synthetic and observed CMDs, and iv) solving and averaging the solutions. The consistency and stability of the method have been tested using a mock stellar population.

The method has been used to solve the SFH of a set of six isolated Local Group dwarf galaxies observed with HST. The main goal is to probe the effects of cosmological processes, such as reionization in the early star formation, or the ability of SNe feedback to remove gas in small halos, in dwarf galaxies free from environmental effects due to the strong interaction with the host galaxy.

Dwarf galaxies offer an opportunity to understand the properties of low metallicity star formation both today and at the earliest times at the epoch of the formation of the first stars. Here we concentrate on two galaxies in the Local Group: the dwarf irregular galaxy Leo A, which has been the recent target of deep HST/ACS imaging (Cole et al. 2007) and the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal, which has been the target of significant wide field spectroscopy with VLT/FLAMES (Battaglia 2007).

I present an introduction to three important subjects relevant to low metallicity star formation: the IMF, stellar evolution, and star formation histories. I will draw on observations from the LCID (Local Cosmology from Isolated Dwarfs) project to illustrate some of these topics.

We present here the latest results of the LCID project (Local Cosmology from Isolated Dwarfs), aimed at recovering the full star formation history (SFH) of six isolated dwarf galaxies of the Local Group (LG). Our method of analysis is based on the IAC-pop code, which derives the SFH of a resolved stellar system by comparing the observed and a model color-magnitude diagram (CMD). We summarize here basic technical issues and the main results concerning our sample of galaxies. We show that LeoA is the only object showing a clear delay in the onset of the major SF event, while all the other galaxies present a dominant component older than 10 Gyrs.

We have obtained infrared spectra of carbon-rich AGB stars in three nearby galaxies – the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, and the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Our primary aim is to investigate gas compositions and mass-loss rate of these stars as a function of metallicity, by comparing AGB stars in several galaxies with different metallicities. C2H2 are detectable from AGB stars, and possibly PAHs are subsequently formed from C2H2. Thus, it is worth investigating chemical processes at low metallicity. These stars were observed using the Infrared Spectrometer (irs) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope which covers 5–35 μm region, and the Infrared Spectrometer And Array Camera (isaac) on the Very Large Telescope which covers the 2.9–4.1 μm region. HCN, CH and C2H2 molecular bands, as well as SiC and MgS dust features are identified in the spectra. The equivalent width of C2H2 molecular bands is larger at lower metallicity, thus PAHs might be abundant in AGB stars at low metallicity. We find no evidence that mass-loss rates depend on metallicity. Chemistry of carbon stars is affected by carbon production during the AGB phase rather than the metallicities. We argue that lower detection rate of PAHs from the interstellar medium of lower metal galaxies is caused by destruction of PAHs in the ISM by stronger UV radiation field.
