Global 21-cm experiments require exquisitely precise calibration of the measurement systems in order to separate the weak 21-cm signal from Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds as well as instrumental systematics. Hitherto, experiments aiming to make this measurement have concentrated on measuring this signal using the single element approach. However, an alternative approach based on interferometers with short baselines is expected to alleviate some of the difficulties associated with a single element approach such as precision modelling of the receiver noise spectrum. Short spacing Interferometer Telescope probing cosmic dAwn and epoch of ReionisAtion (SITARA) is a short spacing interferometer deployed at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO). It is intended to be a prototype or a test-bed to gain a better understanding of interferometry at short baselines, and develop tools to perform observations and data calibration. In this paper, we provide a description of the SITARA system and its deployment at the MRO, and discuss strategies developed to calibrate SITARA. We touch upon certain systematics seen in SITARA data and their modelling. We find that SITARA has sensitivity to all sky signals as well as non-negligible noise coupling between the antennas. It is seen that the coupled receiver noise has a spectral shape that broadly matches the theoretical calculations reported in prior works. We also find that when appropriately modified antenna radiation patterns taking into account the effects of mutual coupling are used, the measured data are well modelled by the standard visibility equation.

We present the results of a new selection technique to identify powerful ($L_{\rm 500\,MHz} \gt 10^{27}\,\text{WHz}^{-1}$) radio galaxies towards the end of the Epoch of Reionisation. Our method is based on the selection of bright radio sources showing radio spectral curvature at the lowest frequency (${\sim}100\,\text{MHz}$) combined with the traditional faintness in K-band for high-redshift galaxies. This technique is only possible, thanks to the Galactic and Extra-galactic All-sky Murchison Wide-field Array survey which provides us with 20 flux measurements across the 70–$230\,\text{MHz}$ range. For this pilot project, we focus on the GAMA 09 field to demonstrate our technique. We present the results of our follow-up campaign with the Very Large Telescope, Australian Telescope Compact Array, and the Atacama Large Millimetre Array to locate the host galaxy and to determine its redshift. Of our four candidate high-redshift sources, we find two powerful radio galaxies in the $1<z<3$ range, confirm one at $z=5.55$, and present a very tentative $z=10.15$ candidate. Their near-infrared and radio properties show that we are preferentially selecting some of the most radio luminous objects, hosted by massive galaxies very similar to powerful radio galaxies at $1<z<5$. Our new selection and follow-up technique for finding powerful radio galaxies at $z>5.5$ has a high 25–50% success rate.

Dwarf galaxies represent the dominant population at high redshift and they most likely contributed in great part to star formation history of the Universe and cosmic reionization. The importance of dwarf galaxies at high redshift has been mostly recognized in the last decade due to large progress in observing facilities allowing deep galaxy surveys to identify low-mass galaxies. This population appear to have extreme emission lines and ionizing properties that challenge stellar population models. Star formation follows a stochastic process in these galaxies, which has important implication on the ionizing photon production and its escape fraction whose measurements are challenging for both simulations and observations. Outstanding questions include: what are the physical properties at the origin of such extreme properties? What are the smallest dark matter halos that host star formation? Are dwarf galaxies responsible for cosmic reionization?

The EoR foregrounds can be up to three magnitudes greater than the cosmological signal we wish to detect. Multiple methods have been developed in order to extract the cosmological signal, falling roughly into three categories: foreground removal, foreground suppression and foreground avoidance. These main approaches are briefly discussed in this review and consideration taken to the future application of these methods as a multi-layered approach.

We report recent investigations in the field of Early Black Holes. We summarize recent theoretical and observational efforts to understand how Black Holes formed and eventually evolved into Super Massive Black Holes at high-z. This paper makes use of state of the art computer simulations and multiwavelength surveys. Although non conclusive, we present results and hypothesis that pose exciting challenges to modern astrophysics and to future facilities.

X-ray surveys of normal galaxies, i.e. those that do not host actively supermassive black holes, have revealed important information on the nature of accreting stellar-mass compact objects (neutron stars and black holes), constraints on populations of possible intermediate-mass black holes (102–5M⊙), and on the reservoir of materials in the hot interstellar medium of the most massive galaxies. Here we summarize briefly the results of Chandra and NuSTAR surveys of several samples of galaxies covered during the 2015 IAU General Assembly. This includes a comprehensive study of six nearby starburst galaxies by the NuSTAR mission, of high-redshift galaxies from the 6 Ms Chandra Deep Field South for which evolutionary trends in X-ray emission over cosmic time have been measured, of collisional ring galaxies which are excellent local environments for studying intermediate-mass black holes and of elliptical galaxies which are ideal for study of the hot gas reservoirs containing the effects of stellar and AGN feedback.

Studying the non-Gaussianity (NG) of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is an extremely powerful tool to investigate the properties of the very early Universe. The Planck nominal mission CMB maps yielded unprecedented constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity providing with the highest precision test of the standard model of inflation. Planck's high sensitivity also allowed to find evidence for the first time of the late-time non-Gaussianity arising from the Lensing-Integrated Sachs Wolfe (ISW) cross correlation. In this talk I will give details on the Planck data analysis and I will discuss the theoretical implications of the results.

We present Keck/HIRES spectra of six metal-poor stars in two of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way, Ursa Major II and Coma Berenices, and a Magellan/MIKE spectrum of a star in the classical dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) Sculptor. Our data include the first high-resolution spectroscopic observations of extremely metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < −3.0) not belonging to the Milky Way (MW) stellar halo field population. We obtain abundance measurements and upper limits for up to 26 elements between carbon and europium. The stars span a range of −3.8 < [Fe/H] < −2.3, with the ultra-faints having large spreads in Fe. A comparison with MW halo stars of similar metallicity reveals substantial agreement between the abundance patterns of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies and Sculptor and the MW halo for the light, α and iron-peak elements (C to Zn). This agreement contrasts with the results of earlier studies of more metal-rich stars (−2.5 ≲[Fe/H]≲ −1.0) in more luminous dwarfs, which found significant abundance discrepancies with respect to the MW halo data. The abundances of neutron-capture elements (Sr to Eu) in all three galaxies are extremely low, consistent with the most metal-poor halo stars, but not with the typical halo abundance pattern at [Fe/H]≳ −3.0. Our results are broadly consistent with a galaxy formation model which predicts that massive dwarf galaxies are the source of the metal-rich component ([Fe/H]≳ −2.5) of the MW inner halo, but we propose that dwarf galaxies similar to the dSphs are the primary contributors to the metal-poor end of the metallicity distribution of the MW outer halo.

We review the expected properties of Pop III and very metal-poor starbursts and the behaviour the Lyα and He ii λ1640 emission lines, which are most likely the best/easiest signatures to single out such objects. Existing claims of Pop III signatures in distant galaxies are critically examined, and the searches for He ii λ1640 emission at high redshift are summarised. Finally, we briefly summarise ongoing and future deep observations at z > 6 aiming in particular at detecting the sources of cosmic reionisation as well as primeval/Pop III galaxies.

It is generally accepted that the very first stars in the universe were significantly more massive and formed much more in isolation than stars observed today. This suggests that there was a transition in star formation modes that was most likely related to the metallicity of the star-forming environment. We study how the addition of heavy elements alters the dynamics of collapsing gas by performing a series of numerical simulations of primordial star formation with various levels of pre-enrichment, using the adaptive mesh refinement, hydrodynamic + N-body code, Enzo. At high redshifts, the process of star formation is heavily influenced by the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which creates a temperature floor for the gas. Our results show that cloud-collapse can follow three distinct paths, depending on the metallicity. For very low metallicities (log10(Z/Z⊙) < −3.5), star formation proceeds in the primordial mode, producing only massive, singular objects. For high metallicities (log10(Z/Z⊙) > −3), efficient cooling from the metals cools the gas to the CMB temperature when the core density is still very low. When the gas temperature reaches the CMB temperature, the core becomes very thermally stable, and further fragmentation is heavily suppressed. In our simulations with log10(Z/Z⊙) > −3, only a single object forms with a mass-scale of a few hundred M⊙. We refer to this as the CMB-regulated star formation mode. For metallicities between these two limits (−3.5 < log10(Z/Z⊙) < −3), the gas cools efficiently, but never reaches the CMB temperature. In this mode, termed the metallicity-regulated star formation mode, the minimum gas temperature is reached at much higher densities, allowing the core to fragment and form multiple objects with mass-scales of only a few M⊙. Our results imply that the stellar initial mass function was top-heavy at very high redshift due to stars forming in the CMB-regulated mode. As the CMB temperature lowers with time, the metallicity-regulated star formation mode (producing multiple low-mass stars) operates at higher metallicities and eventually becomes the sole mode of star formation.

Current numerical studies suggest that the first protogalaxies formed a few stars at a time and were enriched only gradually by the first heavy elements. However, these models do not resolve primordial supernova (SN) explosions or the mixing of their heavy elements with ambient gas, which could result in intervening, prompt generations of low-mass stars. We present multiscale 1D models of Population III supernovae in cosmological minihalos that evolve the blast from its earliest stages as a free expansion. We find that if the star ionizes the halo, the ejecta strongly interacts with the dense shell swept up by the H II region, potentially cooling and fragmenting it into clumps that are gravitationally unstable to collapse. If the star fails to ionize the halo, the explosion propagates metals out to 20 - 40 pc and then collapses, heavily enriching tens of thousands of solar masses of primordial gas, in contrast to previous models that suggest that such explosions ‘fizzle’. Rapid formation of low-mass stars trapped in the gravitational potential well of the halo is unavoidable in these circumstances. Consequently, it is possible that far more stars were swept up into the first galaxies, at earlier times and with distinct chemical signatures, than in present models. Upcoming measurements by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) may discriminate between these two paradigms.
