We investigated the evolution of HS Hya system’s inclination based on analysis of its light curves in the period 1964–2021. HS Hya is EA type eclipsing binary star, belonging to separate group with changing orbital inclination. We used our recent observations as well as the data from sky surveys.

We present an analysis of colour excess (CE) observations for 13 chromospherically active binary systems, together with 27 inactive reference stars of similar spectral types and luminosity classes of the components of these 13 binaries. We used the observations which were made by Johnson-Cousins ${BVR}_{c}\mathrm{I}_{c}$ , 2MASS, and WISE photometric systems. Our new photometric ${BVR}_{c}\mathrm{I}_{c}$ observations were obtained by means of 1 m telescope at TÜBİTAK National Observatory and 40 cm telescope at Ankara University Kreiken Observatory. To check the existence of extended matter around an active binary component(s) of these 13 binary systems, we examined the CE values at around primary/secondary minima and outside eclipses. The comparison of these CEs, obtained relative to those of reference stars of the same ${(B-V)_\circ}$ colours, especially during primary minima with those of secondary minima and outside eclipses, showed that these systems have greater excess radiation in primary minima than in both secondary minima and outside eclipses. We observed that the colour excesses, in general, most likely arise from the extended matter around the cooler component of a binary system. The comparison of CE values also showed that the extended matter of some of these systems was most likely covered or affected both of their components. Since no observational data were obtained during primary minimum of RW UMa, by excluding this binary system, an examination of the locations of cool and active components of the remaining 12 systems of this study on Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, together with corresponding evolutionary tracks, showed that most of the active binary systems have an extended matter not only caused from stellar activity but also more likely caused from evolutionary processes.

Masses have been computed for the white dwarfs (WDs) in eclipsing, mass exchange (symbiotic), WD–red giant (RG) binaries by using single-lined spectroscopic orbits, orbital inclinations, and the RG masses. Inclinations have been measured for 13 eclipsing symbiotic binaries. Using Gaia data the mass of the RG can be found from evolutionary tracks. Since the WD evolved from the more massive star in the binary, the WD should be more massive than predicted from the mass of the current RG. Typically the WD has a lower mass than expected implying a previous mass exchange stage for these systems.

We study the mixing in low-intermediate massive stars using eclipsing binaries. We compute stellar evolutionary models with a varying convective core overshooting parameter and different rotation rates. Using a Bayesian estimation method, we found that the coexistence of the two phenomena may be a reasonable explanation of the observed extra-mixing.

Using high-precision photometry from the Kepler mission, we investigate patterns of spot activity on the K1-type subgiant component of KIC 11560447, a short-period late-type eclipsing binary. We tested the validity of maximum entropy reconstructions of starspots by numerical simulations. Our procedure successfully captures up to three large spot clusters migrating in longitude. We suggest a way to measure a lower limit for stellar differential rotation, using slopes of spot patterns in the reconstructed time-longitude diagram. We find solar-like differential rotation and recurrent spot activity with a long-term trend towards a dominant axisymmetric spot distribution during the period of observations.

Here we present a study of the radio frequency eclipses of the black widow pulsar J1810+1744 at low frequencies, where we are most sensitive to small deviations in the effects of material along the line of sight. Utilising the simultaneous dual beamforming and interferometric (imaging) mode of LOFAR High Band Antenna, pulsar flux variations throughout the orbit are compared for the two observing techniques to test for the presence of scattering and absorption at eclipse orbital phases. Dispersion measure and scattering variations are used as a sensitive probe into outermost edges of the eclipsing material surrounding the companion star. We find the eclipsing medium to be variable on timescales shorter than the 3.6 hr orbital period, and propose cyclotron-synchrotron absorption as the most likely primary eclipse mechanism.

We have conducted a large-scale survey of variable stars in the northern Galactic plane, about 320 square degrees using Kiso Wide Field Camera attached to the 105-cm Schmidt telescope at Kiso observatory. In the KISOGP (KWFC Intensive Survey of the Galactic Plane), we collected 40–100 epoch I-band images between 2012 and 2017. In our survey region roughly 5 million stars exist down to the limiting magnitude of ~16.5 mag in I. In the initial data analysis, we detected a couple of thousands of variable stars including approximately 100 Cepheids and more than 700 Miras. More than 80 percents of them were not previously reported as variable stars, indicating that there are still many relatively bright variables to be found in the Galactic plane.

We present constraints on the variability and binarity of young stars in the central 10 arcseconds (~ 0.4 pc) of the Milky Way Galactic Center (GC) using Keck Adaptive Optics data over a 12 year baseline. Given our experiment’s photometric uncertainties, at least 36% of our sample’s known early-type stars are variable. We identified eclipsing binary systems by searching for periodic variability. In our sample of spectroscopically confirmed and likely early-type stars, we detected the two previously discovered GC eclipsing binary systems. We derived the likely binary fraction of main sequence, early-type stars at the GC via Monte Carlo simulations of eclipsing binary systems, and find that it is at least 32% with 90% confidence.

δ Scuti stars are generally fast rotators and their pulsations are not in the asymptotic regime, so the interpretation of their pulsation spectra is a very difficult task. Binary stars, especially eclipsing systems, offer us the opportunity to constrain the space of fundamental stellar parameters. Firstly, we show the results of KIC9851944 and KIC4851217 as two case studies. We found the signature of the large frequency separation in the pulsational spectrum of both stars. The observed mean stellar density and the large frequency separation obey the linear relation in the log-log space as found by Suarez et al. (2014) and García Hernández et al. (2015). Second, we apply the simple ‘one-layer model’ of Moreno & Koenigsberger (1999) to the prototype heartbeat star KOI-54. The model naturally reproduces the tidally induced high frequency oscillations and their frequencies are very close to the observed frequency at 90 and 91 times the orbital frequency.

The majority of massive stars are members of binary systems. However, in order to understand their evolutionary pathways, mass and angular momentum loss from these systems needs to be well characterized. Self-consistent explanations for their behavior across many wavelength regimes need to be valid in order to illuminate key evolutionary phases. I present the results of linear spectropolarimetric studies of three key binaries (β Lyrae, V356 Sgr, V444 Cyg, and WR 140) which reveal important geometric information about their circumstellar material. β Lyrae exhibits a repeatable discrepancy between secondary eclipse in the total and polarized light curves that indicates an accretion hot spot has formed on the edge of the disk in the system. The existence of this hot spot and its relationship to bipolar outflows within the system is important in the understanding of mass transfer dynamics in Roche-lobe overflow binaries. Preliminary work on V356 Sgr suggests the system maybe surrounded by a common envelope. V444 Cyg shows evidence that its shock creates a cone with a large opening angle of missing material around the WN star. This suggests the effects of radiative inhibition or braking, can be significant contributors to the location and shape of the shock within colliding wind binaries. The intrinsic polarization component of WR 140 is likely due to the formation of dust within the system near periastron passages. Continued work on these and additional objects will provide new and important constraints on the mass loss structures within binary systems.

We present the first systematic study of 4646 spectroscopically confirmed early-type massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using variability as a tool to confine the physics of OB-type massive stars. We report the discovery of ∼100 massive eclipsing systems which are useful for the accurate determination of the fundamental parameters of massive stars and we evaluate the frequency of multiplicity. In addition, we explore the occurrence of the Oe/Be phenomenon and provide a large number of candidate non-radial pulsators, which can be further studied via asteroseismology. The results of this work (Kourniotis et al. 2014) will contribute to a better understanding of the role of metallicity in triggering processes associated to matter ejections and/or disk formation, which in turn affect mass loss and stellar rotation.

In this paper, I review some of the basic properties of the pulsar population in globular clusters (GCs) and compare it with the the Galactic disk population. The neutron stars (NSs) in GCs were likely formed - and appear to continue forming - in highly symmetric supernovae (SNe), likely from accretion-induced collapse (AIC). I review the many pulsar finds and discuss some particularly well populated GCs and why they are so. I then discuss some particularly interesting objects, like millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with eccentric orbits, which were heavily perturbed by passing stars. Some of these systems, like NGC 1851A and NGC 6544B, are almost certainly the result of exchange interactions, i.e., they are witnesses to the very same processes that created the large population of MSPs in the first place. I also review briefly the problem posed by the presence of young pulsars in GCs (with a special emphasis on a sub-class of young pulsars, the super-energetic MSPs), which suggest continuing formation of NSs in low-velocity SNe. In the final section, I discuss the possibility of an analogous population in the Galaxy and highlight a particularly interesting case, PSR J1903+0327, where the primary neutron star appears to have formed with a small-velocity kick and small fractional mass loss. Systems with primary NSs formed in electron-capture SNe should constitute a distinct low-velocity Galactic population akin in many respects to the GC population. Current high-resolution surveys of the Galactic plane should be able to detect it clearly.

The ASTEP project aims at detecting and characterizing transiting planets from Dome C, Antarctica, and qualifying this site for photometry in the visible. The first phase of the project, ASTEP South, is a fixed 10 cm diameter instrument pointing continuously towards the celestial South Pole. Observations were made almost continuously during 4 winters, from 2008 to 2011. The point-to-point RMS of 1-day photometric lightcurves can be explained by a combination of expected statistical noises, dominated by the photon noise up to magnitude 14. This RMS is large, from 2.5 mmag at R = 8 to 6% at R = 14, because of the small size of ASTEP South and the short exposure time (30 s). Statistical noises should be considerably reduced using the large amount of collected data. A 9.9-day period eclipsing binary is detected, with a magnitude R = 9.85. The 2-season lightcurve folded in phase and binned into 1,000 points has a RMS of 1.09 mmag, for an expected photon noise of 0.29 mmag. The use of the 4 seasons of data with a better detrending algorithm should yield a sub-millimagnitude precision for this folded lightcurve. Radial velocity follow-up observations reveal a F-M binary system. The detection of this 9.9-day period system with a small instrument such as ASTEP South and the precision of the folded lightcurve show the quality of Dome C for continuous photometric observations, and its potential for the detection of planets with orbital periods longer than those usually detected from the ground.

Astronomical time series are special in that time sampling in them is uneven yet often with periodic gaps due to daytime, moon and seasons. There is therefore a need for special-purpose time-series analysis (TSA) methods. The emergence of massive CCD photometric surveys from the ground and space raises the question of an automatic period search in ≫ 105 light curves. We caution that already at the planning stage it is important to account for the effects of time sampling and analysis methods on the sensitivity of detections. We present a transparent scheme for the classification of period-search methods. We employ tools for evaluating the performance of those methods, according to the type of light curves investigated. In particular we consider sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal oscillations as well as eclipse or transit light curves. From these considerations we draw recommendations for the optimum analysis of astronomical time series. We present briefly the capability of an automatic period-search package Tatry. Finally we discuss the role of Monte Carlo simulations in the analysis of detection sensitivity. As an example, we demonstrate a practical method to account for the bandwidth (multi-trial) penalty in the statistical evaluation of detected periods.

To inspire and provoke lively discussions, I argue that the accuracy of the basic physical properties of stars, based on analyses of well-observed detached binaries, might be worse than usually believed. I offer some ways how to deal with the situation. I end with a few comments on the studies of extra-solar planets.

In this summary, I address the next generation of theoretical tools with which it may be necessary to interpret the data anticipated as both stellar and planetary astronomy enter their next decades.

We present physical and chemcal properties of the disk in the eclipsing binary system ∊ Aur by solving 2D radiative transfer problem. We also present preliminary results of our high resolution spectroscopic monitoring of K I, Na, and Hα line profiles variation during the totality phase of the recent eclipse of ∊ Aur.

The study of eclipsing binaries as members of multiple systems can provide us important information about their origin, evolution, mutual inclination of the orbits, independent distance and mass determination, as well as the stellar multiplicity in general. We are carrying out a long-term photometric monitoring of several eclipsing binaries within the visual multiples and, besides the complete light curves, we are trying to detect the period changes due to the orbital motion around a common barycenter.

Systems like DN UMa, V819 Her, LO Hya, or VW Cep are typical examples of eclipsing binaries orbiting around the barycenter of the multiple system, while their respective periods are on the order of years or decades. However, the expected period variation is only hardly detectable and there is still uncertainty about which of the components is the eclipsing one. Precise spectroscopy would be of great benefit, but detecting the changes in the gamma velocity is still problematic, and spectral disentangling of such complicated systems like sextuple VV Crv (periods 1.46, 3.14, and 44.51 days) is also rather difficult. However, the detection of the changing depths of the eclipses in the latter system would be interesting.

In the framework of the EVRENA project, high-resolution spectra of northern eclipsing close binaries in stellar groups are obtained with the HERMES Echelle spectrograph at the Mercator telescope (Roque de los Muchachos Observatory). This contribution gives the first results on DV Camelopardalis.

CCD photometric observations of the Algol-type eclipsing binary AT Peg have been obtained. The light curves are analyzed with modern techniques and new geometric and photometric elements are derived. A new orbital period analysis of the system, based on the most reliable timings of minima found in the literature, is presented and apparent period modulations are discussed with respect to the Light-Time effect (LITE) and secular changes in the system. The results of these analyses are compared and interpreted in order to obtain a coherent view of the system's behaviour.
