The Late Triassic fauna of the Lossiemouth Sandstone Formation (LSF) from the Elgin area, Scotland, has been pivotal in expanding our understanding of Triassic terrestrial tetrapods. Frustratingly, due to their odd preservation, interpretations of the Elgin Triassic specimens have relied on destructive moulding techniques, which only provide incomplete, and potentially distorted, information. Here, we show that micro-computed tomography (μCT) could revitalise the study of this important assemblage. We describe a long-neglected specimen that was originally identified as a pseudosuchian archosaur, Ornithosuchus woodwardi. μCT scans revealed dozens of bones belonging to at least two taxa: a small-bodied pseudosuchian and a specimen of the procolophonid Leptopleuron lacertinum. The pseudosuchian skeleton possesses a combination of characters that are unique to the clade Erpetosuchidae. As a basis for investigating the phylogenetic relationships of this new specimen, we reviewed the anatomy, taxonomy and systematics of other erpetosuchid specimens from the LSF (all previously referred to Erpetosuchus). Unfortunately, due to the differing representation of the skeleton in the available Erpetosuchus specimens, we cannot determine whether the erpetosuchid specimen we describe here belongs to Erpetosuchus granti (to which we show it is closely related) or if it represents a distinct new taxon. Nevertheless, our results shed light on rarely preserved details of erpetosuchid anatomy. Finally, the unanticipated new information extracted from both previously studied and neglected specimens suggests that fossil remains may be much more widely distributed in the Elgin quarries than previously recognised, and that the richness of the LSF might have been underestimated.

Summary
ABSTRACT
Operational definitions of biochron boundaries refer to a stratigraphic record; either the lowest known occurrence of the defining taxon in a given section (Lowest Stratigraphic Datum), or the presumed Earliest Known Record of the defining taxon in a geographic area (EKR). Operational definitions in this context are subject to a variety of geological, paleoecological, taphonomic, and sampling biases, and will often result in biochron “boundaries” that are inappropriate for consistent magnetobiochronological correlations. Theoretical definitions of biochron boundaries refer to historical events, such as the immigration or evolution of the defining taxon (First Historical Appearance; FHA), and are recommended here. In order to demonstrate that such a boundary occurs within a particular magnetozone, (1) the defining or characterizing taxa for the beginning of this biochron and (2) an assemblage confidently referable to the next older biochron must both be known from this same magnetozone.
Flynn (1986) proposed that the Bridgerian/Uintan North American Land Mammal “Age” boundary occurred during Chron C20r. However, evidence from the La Jolla Group in San Diego and the Aycross and Tepee Trail formations in Wyoming now suggests that this boundary occurred either during the latest part of Chron C21r or during C21n, and given the time scale of Berggren et al. (1995), its age is estimated at between 46.3 and 48.3 Ma.
Flynn's (1986) suggestion that the beginning of the Uintan is older than the geochron of Uinta B is probably correct, but the status of the “Shoshonian Subage” of the Uintan is problematical.

Summary
ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses a series of stratigraphically superposed middle Eocene mammal assemblages from coastal San Diego County. The Swami's Point local fauna (Delmar Formation) is the first fossil vertebrate assemblage of demonstrably Bridgerian age from southern California. The assemblage from the basal Scripps Formation (Black's Beach local fauna) is either of late Bridgerian or early Uintan age. Uintan biochronology is problematical, due to the lack of a rigorous biostratigraphic framework and other unsolved problems in the Uinta Basin. However, the early Uintan/late Uintan boundary can be characterized in southern California by the extinction of the common early Uintan genera Crypholestes, an unnnamed dormaaliid insectivore, Omomys, Washakius, Metarhinus?, and Merycobunodon, and by the evolution and/or immigration of the common late Uintan genera Sespedectes, Proterixoides, Dyseolemur, Rapamys, Griphomys, and Simimys.
The early Uintan Poway fauna is redefined as the entire set of vertebrate taxa occurring in the Friars Formation. The Mesa Drive local fauna and the assemblage from SDSNH Locality 3486 demonstrate an early Uintan age for the upper part of Member B of the Santiago Formation in northwestern San Diego County. The Murray Canyon local fauna (late early Uintan) is named for a distinctive assemblage from the lower member of the Stadium Conglomerate. The late Uintan Stonecrest local fauna (undifferentiated Stadium Conglomerate) represents the lowest stratigraphic occurrence in San Diego County of several taxa characteristic of the Sespe Formation of Ventura County. The late Uintan Cloud 9 fauna is defined as the entire set of vertebrate taxa present in all outcrops of the Mission Valley Formation.

Summary
ABSTRACT
The stratigraphy of the Friars Formation and Poway Group in southwestern San Diego County is informally revised. The Friars Formation is locally divisible into three units: a lower sandstone and mudstone tongue, a middle conglomerate tongue, and an upper sandstone and mudstone tongue. As far as can be determined, the Friars Formation is entirely of early Uintan age. The Stadium Conglomerate is stratigraphically and geographically restricted, but is nevertheless locally divisible into a lower member of late early Uintan and possibly late Uintan age, and an upper member of late Uintan age. The Mission Valley Formation of late Uintan age is stratigraphically and geographically restricted only to those strata that are correlative with the type section.
We corroborate previous reports that the lower and upper parts of the type outcrops of the Friars Formation are of normal and reversed polarity, respectively, and concur in the assignment of these polarity intervals to Chrons C21n and C20r. However, the polarity of the lower, conglomerate, and upper tongues of the Friars as recognized here is variable, and may reflect significant time-transgression of these units. The lower member of the Stadium Conglomerate is tentatively assigned to C20r. The upper member of the Stadium may straddle the C20r/C20n boundary. The lower normal and upper reversed magnetozones of the Mission Valley Formation in the type section of this formation are tentatively correlated with C20n and C19r, based on the 40Ar39 Ar date of 42.83 ± 0.24 Ma.
