Summary
This chapter explores an often-overlooked lifecourse transition in relation to civil society: that of becoming a grandparent. Most existing lifecourse studies on the impact of family obligations on civic engagement focus on the impact of becoming a parent – and as we have seen in the previous chapter, parenthood can have a significant impact on an individual's relationship with civil society. This chapter extends this analysis and, through acknowledging the significance of the grandparent– grandchild relationship (Smith 2005), explores the types of civic engagement that might be triggered or halted by grandparenthood.
Television and children's books tend to portray grandparents as old, frail, fussy, infirm and sedentary (Janelli and Sorge 2002; Smith 2005). As part of the older population, grandparents are generally perceived to be the beneficiaries of care rather than as actively contributing to civil society through, for example, voluntary work, political participation or associational membership. Indeed, a persistent focus on an individual's economic contribution throughout their working life and rising concerns about the public health burden of ageing populations work together to position older individuals as a worrisome responsibility for their descendants. This does not give the full picture of grandparenthood, however: the average age of becoming a grandparent in Britain is actually 55 (Leopold and Skopek 2015), meaning that many grandparents are relatively young, active, in paid employment and engaged in their communities.
Despite grandparenthood being a central aspect of later life (Margolis 2016), which most adults will experience, the area remains underresearched (Smith 2005), particularly from the point of view of the grandparent. Little of the existing research focuses on the experiences of grandparents themselves and the effect that having grandchildren can have on their day-to-day lives. This chapter addresses this gap in the literature. We begin with a comparison of grandparents and non-grandparents drawing on nationally representative cross-sectional survey data, and then draw on in-depth interviews with grandparents themselves. We explore the activities and practices associated with ‘grandparenting’ as a trigger for, or barrier to, active engagement in civil society, taking a particular interest in how the role of grandparent interacts with individuals’ participation in civil society and ask how being a grandparent shapes their patterns of interest and participation.

Fish consumption is the major dietary source of EPA and DHA, which according to rodent experiments may reduce body fat mass and prevent obesity. Only a few human studies have investigated the association between fish consumption and body-weight gain. We investigated the association between fish consumption and subsequent change in body weight. Women and men (n 344 757) participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition were followed for a median of 5·0 years. Linear and logistic regression were used to investigate the associations between fish consumption and subsequent change in body weight. Among women, the annual weight change was 5·70 (95 % CI 4·35, 7·06), 2·23 (95 % CI 0·16, 4·31) and 11·12 (95 % CI 8·17, 14·08) g/10 g higher total, lean and fatty fish consumption per d, respectively. The OR of becoming overweight in 5 years among women who were normal weight at enrolment was 1·02 (95 % CI 1·01, 1·02), 1·01 (95 % CI 1·00, 1·02) and 1·02 (95 % CI 1·01, 1·04) g/10 g higher total, lean and fatty consumption per d, respectively. Among men, fish consumption was not statistically significantly associated with weight change. Adjustment for potential over- or underestimation of fish consumption did not systematically change the observed associations, but the 95 % CI became wider. The results in subgroups from analyses stratified by age or BMI at enrolment were not systematically different. In conclusion, the present study suggests that fish consumption has no appreciable association with body-weight gain.

Interwork Limited is an open employment service that aims to maximise participation of individuals in the open labour market. As part of its services Interwork offers a Gazebo Café Program. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the impact of the participation in the Gazebo Café Program (a work preparation and skills training centre), from the perspective of key stakeholders. The rationale for this evaluation was to provide the management team of Interwork with information to inform decision-making for future directions of the Café. The project was undertaken as partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy with Honours. In-depth interviews were conducted with three consumers, as well as two focus groups with four employment coordinators, and two referring agency staff members respectively. Analysis of the data revealed seven themes. The results suggested that participation in the Gazebo Café Program was a positive experience. Consumers felt they developed functional skills. Employment coordinators and referring agency staff emphasised the impact of the development of social and interpersonal skills. Opportunities to experience meaningful occupation while performing the work role, all within a natural and supportive community environment were valued impacts. Issues were raised relating to finding the right composition of consumers with and without disabilities, the affordability of the services for external users, and the current unavailability of accredited training. While the findings expand upon existing literature, they describe impacts of participation in a transition program for consumers that appear to not have been described elsewhere. Information is provided to other service providers in regards to the value and impact of such a program. Implications for open employment services are discussed.

There is increasing use of electric mobility-scooters by older people in South Australia, the fourth largest state in Australia. Although various issues about their use have been raised by users, carers, urban planners and legislators, to date they have received little research attention. The purpose of the study reported in this paper was to explore the factors that influence and impact upon older people who use mobility-scooters, particularly from their own perspectives. Data were collected through a survey of 67 current electric mobility-scooter older users, and through two focus groups with other older South Australian people who were users. The data showed that more than 71 per cent of the participants had owned their scooter for more than two years, most had purchased the scooter as new, and 80 per cent owned a four-wheel scooter. The scooter was used predominantly for getting to and from shops, visiting friends and family, and to go for rides. Most respondents used their scooters three to five times each week and travelled between two and five kilometres from their home. The key findings from the focus groups were categorised into three major themes of ‘obtaining a scooter’, ‘the meaning of mobility’ and ‘issues around sharing spaces’. Each is exemplified. The implications for environmental and building design, for the better training of users, and for public education are discussed.
