This paper contributes to the debate on whether pre-harvest pricing strategies can improve returns over cash sales at harvest. It also examines cash flow needs of such strategies. The analysis is conducted for Ohio corn produced from 1986 through 1999. The pre-harvest strategies evaluated (short futures, long put, synthetic long put, put-call fence) did not statistically improve returns over cash sales at harvest. However, if implemented during or before planting, these naïve strategies reduced the standard deviation of annual gross income. Substantial cash flow may be incurred, either to establish the strategy or meet margin calls. Therefore, assessments of pre-harvest pricing strategies should include cash flow needs, along with return and risk.

Summary
Among students of European drama it is more or less generally known that a number of Spanish plays of the first half of the nineteenth century were later fashioned into operas. Some of these transformations resulted in works that remain popular and admired today, notably Verdi's La forza del destino, based on a play by the duque de Rivas, and the same composer's Il trovatore and Simon Boccanegra, both based on plays by Antonio García Gutiérrez. Much less known is the fact that several Golden Age comedias also had a second life on the lyric stage, although, with a few exceptions, they were reborn not as operas but rather as zarzuelas. It is difficult, of course, to establish a strict separation between these two types of musical theatre, but a distinction frequently made is that operas tend to be sung-through, whereas zarzuelas, like operettas and musical comedies, alternate sung passages with those that are spoken. Typically, although not always, they are light in tone, which means that comic characters and scenes abound in them. Also common are scenes involving dancing and spectacle.
The history of the zarzuela is normally divided into two halves, the classical and the modern. Classical zarzuelas are those that were composed in the last decades of the seventeenth century and first decades of the eighteenth. Modern zarzuelas are those that come from the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth. Classical zarzuelas slipped into oblivion in Spain after their peak of prestige in the early eighteenth century, but in recent years they have been increasingly recorded and occasionally produced as well. The best of the modern zarzuelas have never lost their audience, and are still today often found on the stages of Spain and other countries in the Hispanic world.
One of the most popular of these, if not the most popular of all, is Doña Francisquita, based on lope de Vega's comedy La discreta enamorada. Beloved for its gaiety, freshness, and charm, Doña Francisquita premiered in 1923.

Summary
The Comedia in English is hardly a new phenomenon. Soon after appearing on the boards in Spain, many plays found their way across the Channel, some directly, others by way of France. Given the popularity of Spanish plays in the seventeenth century, it seems ironic that reviewers today consistently marvel at the fact that the rich dramatic tradition of the Golden Age is little known and rarely performed. The two favorites, Fuenteovejuna and Life Is a Dream, have of course been included habitually in modern anthologies for study, but until recently even they had little presence on the Englishspeaking stage, either in translation or adaptation. However, as we will show in this brief overview of translation and performance, the turn of the millennium saw a marked increase in interest, and consequently a proliferation in productions by professional companies not only of these two standbys but of a surprising number of other comedias as well. Many of the same reasons that attracted seventeenth-century playwrights and audiences to the genre can help to explain its reemergence of late. What we will emphasize in the present discussion is not only the sameness, then and now, of the process of creating an English playtext from a Spanish original, but also the newness of some of the trends that have led to a number of successful productions in the last twenty-five years.
Despite this success, the inconvenient truth of the matter is that the Comedia is still produced infrequently in the English-speaking world. Four centuries ago, however, it was a source for more English plays than we might suppose. A few of these come from the first half of the seventeenth century. The vast majority, however, are products of the second half. Interestingly, virtually none of these plays, whether of the first part of the century or the last, derive from works of the dark and brooding sort that many modern audiences associate with Spanish theatre. Rather they spring from comedias de capa y espada, amusing cloak and sword plays, with their plethora of plots and fast-paced action. It is these plays of “Spanish plot,” to use Dryden's term, that initiated what John Loftis has called the “the Spanish strain in [English] drama” (Plays 3).
