Neutron imaging is a nondestructive application capable of producing two- and three-dimensional maps of archaeological objects’ external and internal structure, properties, and composition. This report presents the recent development of neutron imaging data collection and processing methods at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), which have been advanced, in part, by information gathered from the experimental imaging of 25 archaeological objects over the past three years. The dual objectives of these imaging experiments included (1) establishing the first methodological procedures for the neutron imaging of archaeomaterials involving the CG-1D beamline and (2) further illustrating the potential of neutron imaging for archaeologists to use in the reverse engineering of ancient and historical objects. Examples of objects imaged in two and three dimensions are provided to highlight the application’s strengths and limitations for archaeological investigations, especially those that address ancient and historic technologies, materials science, and conservation issues.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae, and orphan afterglows of gamma-ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of 5 s and greater. We also present an analysis of the expected source populations that we will be able to detect with VAST.

Summary
Introduction
Analyses of biodiversity typically revolve around four questions, two of which are generally characterised as questions in ecology, and two as questions in economics. They are:
How do natural processes and human actions affect the number and persistence of species?
What different roles does biodiversity serve in determining the structure and function of ecosystems?
What are the social and economic driving forces that generate human impacts on biodiversity?
What is the value of biodiversity for human agricultural, ethical, medical, renewable resource and social purposes?
This chapter is written by ecologists for nonecologists – and primarily for economists. In one sense it is a primer describing our present state of understanding of ecosystems, the way they are structured, the way they function and the way they respond to disturbance and human management. In doing so, we concentrate on the first two questions. We attempt to do so in such a way that nonecologists can recognise concepts, explanations and descriptions that, if included in linked economic/ecological models and analyses, would produce an understanding of the problem that would be more consonant with present knowledge of the way ecosystems are structured and function.
Because the remaining two topics are the consequence of social, institutional and economic systems, we will leave those to our economist colleagues in the hope that they, in turn, will educate us in understanding how human dynamics intersect with nature.

Summary
Introduction
One of the main biological challenges to the economics of natural resource utilisation relates to the fact that almost all dynamic resource models are now being shown to ignore those properties of natural systems which most affect their evolution over time. The economic utilisation of natural resources involves the exploitation of ecological systems that turn out to be highly nonlinear, and characterised by discontinuous and sometimes irreversible change around a range of “thresholds.” Yet most resource models either implicitly or explicitly assume the continuity, differentiability and reversibility of the underlying ecological functions. It has long been recognised that negative environmental externalities compromise the concavity–convexity conditions for social optima (cf Baumol and Bradford 1972; Starrett 1972), but the problem raised by the complexity of ecological systems goes well beyond the nonconvexity of the social possibility set. Discontinuities in the evolution of economically exploited ecological systems imply discontinuities in the economic system. That is, if economic pressure on any ecosystem causes it to “crash” – to undergo some fundamental and irreversible internal reorganisation – then the economic activities concerned will be similarly disrupted. Since many of the sources of discontinuous change in economically important ecological systems lie in the alteration of species diversity, this challenge is raised in a particularly acute way in the biodiversity problem.
