Effects of temperature, relative humidity, and light on MSMA phytotoxicity to wild-type and arsenical herbicide-resistant biotypes of common cocklebur grown from seed collected in Mississippi were evaluated. In growth chamber studies, 20-d-old plants were sprayed with 0.5 kg ai/ha of MSMA, and after 7 d, fresh weight and chlorophyll content were measured to estimate phytotoxicity. All three environmental factors influenced the level of weed resistance. In studies with day/night temperatures of 30/25 C and 500 μmol/m2/s PPFD light with a 14-h photoperiod, phytotoxicity of MSMA at 40% relative humidity was minimal, but was significantly greater at 60 and 90% relative humidities. The resistant (R) biotype was affected less than the susceptible (S) biotype at the higher relative humidities. The level of resistance estimated by fresh weight reduction was greatest at 30/25 C, but was most pronounced at 35/30 C using chlorophyll measurements. Resistance was lowest at 25/20 C by either measurement. MSMA phytotoxicity occurred at light intensities of 75, 500, and 750 μmol/m2/s PPFD; however, biotypic response was greatest at 500, followed by 750 μmol/m2/s PPFD. Resistance of the (R) biotype to MSMA was not significant at 75 μmol/m2/s, suggesting that differentiation between the biotypes for MSMA sensitivity would be difficult under low light.

Weed control by rye, crimson clover, subterranean clover, and hairy vetch cover crops was evaluated in no-tillage corn during 1992 and 1993 at two North Carolina locations. Weed biomass reduction was similar with rye, crimson clover, and subterranean clover treatments, ranging between 19 and 95% less biomass than a conventional tillage treatment without cover. Weed biomass reduction using hairy vetch or no cover in a notillage system was similar averaging between 0 and 49%, but less than other covers approximately 45 and 90 d after planting. Weed biomass was eliminated or nearly eliminated in all cover systems with PRE plus POST herbicide treatments. Weed species present varied greatly between years and locations, but were predominantly common lambsquarters, smooth pigweed, redroot pigweed, and broadleaf signalgrass. Corn grain yield was greatest using PRE herbicides or PRE plus POST herbicides, averaging between 16 to 100% greater than the nontreated control across all cover treatments depending on the year and location.

Imidazolinone herbicides injure currently available commercial field corn cultivars; however, cultivars resistant to these herbicides have been developed. Sicklepod, Texas panicum, and annual morningglory control using AC 263,222 (36 and 72 g ai/ha), imazethapyr (36 and 72 g ai/ha), or nicosulfuron (35 g ai/ha) applied POST at 2,4, and 6 wk after planting were evaluated in imidazolinone-tolerant corn. Studies were conducted at Attapulgus and Plains, Georgia from 1992 through 1993. Nicosulfuron and AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled Texas panicum at least 87% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imazethapyr did not consistently control Texas panicum or sicklepod, regardless of application rate. AC 263,222 at both rates and nicosulfuron controlled sicklepod at least 86% when applied 2 wk after planting; however, later application or application under dry conditions generally resulted in reduced control. All herbicides controlled the entireleaf and pitted morningglory complex at least 84% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imidazolinone-tolerant corn was tolerant to all herbicides, regardless of rate and timing, and generally yielded greater when weeds were controlled early in the season.

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effects of tank-mixing the sodium salt of dicamba (Na-dicamba) with imazethapyr on the efficacy and foliar absorption of imazethapyr, applied with non-ionic surfactant (NIS) or methylated seed oil (MSO), by shattercane, giant foxtail, and large crabgrass. The effects of various salt formulations of dicamba and the addition of ammonium sulfate on efficacy, 14C-absorption and on foliar spray retention by the same species were also evaluated. Na-dicamba antagonized imazethapyr efficacy by reducing 14C-absorption. Using MSO instead of NIS prevented antagonism when Na-dicamba was applied at 70 and 140 g/ha and reduced the severity of the antagonism at greater application rates by greatly increasing 14C-absorption compared to NIS. Reductions in 14C-absorption and spray retention were due to the salt formulations of dicamba rather than the parent acid. The addition of ammonium sulfate prevented dicamba antagonism of imazethapyr toxicity to grassy weeds by maintaining 14C foliar absorption and spray retention at normal levels.

The effects of chlorimuron, imazaquin, imazethapyr, nicosulfuron, primisulfuron, and thifensulfuron were evaluated on a population of smooth pigweed in Painter, VA with no history of treatment with acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibitor herbicides. Imazethapyr and nicosulfuron gave the greatest smooth pigweed control, and subsequently were used in field and greenhouse studies to investigate susceptibility of smooth pigweed and livid amaranth populations to ALS-inhibitor herbicides. Approximately 5 million smooth pigweed plants from Painter were treated with imazethapyr or nicosulfuron from 1992 to 1994 and no ALS-inhibitor-resistant plants were identified. In the greenhouse, the response of smooth pigweed from Painter, VA, Marion, MD, and Oak Hall, VA and livid amaranth from Warren County, NJ to imazaquin or imazethapyr and nicosulfuron was investigated. Smooth pigweed from Marion and Oak Hall and livid amaranth from NJ had histories of treatment with ALS-inhibitors. Painter smooth pigweed control was 81 to 97% by imazethapyr and nicosulfuron while control of the Marion and Oak Hall populations was 3 and 18% by imazaquin at 560 and 1120 g ai/ha, respectively, and control by nicosulfuron at 35 g ai/ha was 50 to 73%. Control of livid amaranth from Warren County, NJ was 8 to 15% by imazethapyr at 560 g ai/ha, and was 30 to 58% by nicosulfuron at 35 g/ha.

Postemergence applications of nicosulfuron and primisulfuron may injure corn plants depending on the level of terbufos present in the young corn plants from application of terbufos for corn rootworm control. Field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate the interaction of nicosulfuron and primisulfuron with terbufos and to relate terbufos levels, detected with a rapid detection kit, to injury. Terbufos was applied in-furrow at 0, 186, 375, and 750 g ai/100 m of row. Nicosulfuron was applied at 35 and 70 g ai/ha and primisulfuron at 40 and 80 g ai/ha when the corn was at the four-leaf stage. Prior to herbicide application, both fresh and frozen plant samples from each treatment were subjected to terbufos analysis. The correlation coefficient for terbufos detected in the shoot extract with observed herbicide injury to corn was r = 0.89 in 1992 and r = 0.94 in 1993. Injury ratings showed a greater correlation with terbufos levels than did corn shoot height. Thus, the rapid detection kit provided an efficient method to determine whether an injurious terbufos-herbicide interaction might occur.

In 1993, a wild mustard population growing in a canola crop near Wetaskiwin, AB was poorly controlled by ethametsulfuron after only one previous use of the herbicide. Controlled environment experiments were conducted to compare the response of this suspected resistant population (R) with that of a known susceptible population (S) collected near Vegreville, AB to increasing rates of ethametsulfuron, metsulfuron, chlorsulfuron, thifensulfuron, HOE 075032, imazamethabenz, imazethapyr, metribuzin, and 2,4-D. The R wild mustard population was highly resistant to ethametsulfuron, slightly resistant to low rates of metsulfuron but not resistant to any of the other herbicides tested. This suggests that the mechanism of resistance may differ from that reported for other sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicides. Since resistance was documented after only 2 yr of ethametsulfuron use, the initial frequency of resistance to this herbicide in wild mustard populations may be very high. Dry weight of untreated plants did not differ significantly between the S and R populations suggesting little or no differences in competitiveness between them.

Field experiments were conducted in Alabama from 1992 through 1994 to evaluate the potential of the methyl ester of bensulfuron applied at sublethal rates as a plant growth regulator for reducing plant height and boll rot in cotton. Bensulfuron at 0.017 and 0.034 g ai/ha or mepiquat chloride at 10 g ai/ha was applied POST alone at the pinhead square or early-bloom stage of cotton growth or sequentially at 0.017 followed by (fb) 0.017 g/ha, 0.034 fb 0.034 g/ha of bensulfuron and 5 fb 5, 10 fb 10, 10 fb 20, or 20 fb 20 g/ha of mepiquat chloride. Mepiquat chloride had no effect on yield in 1992 and 1994 but decreased yield when applied sequentially in 1993. Bensulfuron was generally detrimental to first position fruit retention, and it delayed maturity. Treatments that reduced plant height did not reduce boll rot. Bensulfuron treatments that reduced plant height also reduced yield; therefore, the potential for its use as a growth regulator in cotton appears limited.

An algorithm was developed for use in a geographic information system (GIS) to model the surface movement of herbicide in response to a rainfall event as modulated by slope, soil, management practices, and time of herbicide application. This algorithm was implemented in the GIS software Geographic Resource Analysis Support System (GRASS) and uses as submodels the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) curve number procedure, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), and the pesticide submodel from the model Chemicals, Runoff, and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems (CREAMS). The algorithm estimates the loss of pesticide from field areas, runoff flow patterns, and the accumulation of pesticide downslope in response to a rainfall event. The simulated movement of atrazine, cyanazine, and alachlor was studied under hypothetical management scenarios in the Lake Pittsfield watershed in Pike Co., IL. Tillage for the simulation was by moldboard plow. An alternate no-till scenario was simulated to test tillage effect on atrazine movement. Herbicides were applied either PPI, PRE, POST, or early preplant for no-till (treated as same application time as PPI but without incorporation). The experiment was designed to incorporate timing of application as a management factor from the standpoint of a single rain event on May 16. The results used for comparison were data from 1 d after POST application, 15 d after PRE application and 30 d after PPI application. The algorithm showed that areas of greater herbicide risk can be located within a watershed and that the effect of alternative management practices can be evaluated using a GIS.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine host status of weed species for Rhizoctonia solani AG-1, which causes Rhizoctonia foliar blight of soybean. Weed species were barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, common cocklebur, entireleaf morningglory, hemp sesbania, itchgrass, johnsongrass, large crabgrass, northern jointvetch, prickly sida, purple nutsedge, redweed, sicklepod, and smooth pigweed. Seedling weeds were inoculated with suspensions containing intraspecific group IA and IB isolates of the fungus. In the first study, sclerotia of IA were recovered from tissue of all weeds except smooth pigweed, and mycelia of IA were recovered from all except smooth pigweed and redweed. In that study, neither microsclerotia nor mycelia of IB were recovered from sicklepod, barnyardgrass, or large crabgrass, and only microsclerotia were recovered from itchgrass and purple nutsedge. In the second study, sclerotia of IA, microsclerotia of IB, and mycelia of each isolate were recovered from all weed species. In other studies, R. solani spread from at least six of seven weed species to a noninfected soybean plant growing in close proximity. These studies emphasize the importance of weed control, not only for reducing plant competition and increasing yield, but also for the potential impact on development of RFB.

Greenhouse studies determined the dose-responses of cheat, downy brome, Japanese brome, jointed goatgrass, and winter wheat to preplant-incorporated MON 37500 and its residual effects on kochia. Concentrations of MON 37500 up to 60 ppbw did not affect winter wheat. MON 37500 did not prevent weed emergence, but increasingly inhibited weed growth as the dose was increased up to about 20 ppbw. GR50 values were 16, 16, 11, and 31 ppbw for cheat, downy brome, Japanese brome, and jointed goatgrass, respectively. Japanese brome was more susceptible than cheat or downy brome, and jointed goatgrass tolerated two to three times more MON 37500 than the Bromus species. Plant dry weights of kochia seeded after removal of the winter annual grasses decreased with increasing initial MON 37500 concentrations up to 20 ppbw. Kochia density was influenced by which winter annual grass was grown previously.

Efficacy of KIH-2023 applied POST at rates of 15 to 40 g ai/ha was evaluated in dry-seeded and water-seeded rice production in 1994 and 1995. Purple ammannia, ducksalad, and Indian jointvetch control with KIH-2023 was similar, and alligatorweed control was greater with KIH-2023 compared with propanil or tank mixtures of propanil plus thiobencarb in water-seeded rice. Barnyardgrass was controlled similarly with KIH-2023 and sequential applications of propanil in dry-seeded rice. Rice yields generally reflected differences in weed control, with yields of rice treated with KIH-2023 similar to sequential propanil applications or propanil plus thiobencarb in dry-, and water-seeded rice, respectively. Minor rice foliar and root injury were noted with KIH-2023.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to characterize a synergistic interaction between fluazifop-P and terbacil in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne). In the greenhouse, injury from foliar terbacil applications generally increased two- or more fold when 75 or 150 g/ha fluazifop-P was applied foliarly 24 h later to either a terbacil tolerant (‘Veestar’) or sensitive (‘Kent’) strawberry cultivar. Synergism also occurred when terbacil was applied as a soil drench and fluazifop-P was applied 5 d later. There was little difference in effect between tank-mixed and sequential applications made 0.5 and 20 min apart. Increased injury was also observed with intervals up to 6 d between applications in the greenhouse, and the order of herbicide application did not affect injury level. Similar results were obtained in field experiments on newly planted ‘Honeoye’ and ‘Cavendish’ strawberry. An interval of 6 d or more between terbacil and fluazifop-P application is suggested to minimize the risk of increased crop injury.

Field experiments were conducted from 1992 through 1994 to determine the effect of selected graminicides when applied in combination with pyrithiobac for johnsongrass control in cotton. Quizalofop-P, clethodim, sethoxydim, and fluazifop-P were applied at rates recommended for rhizome johnsongrass control with or without pyrithiobac at 70 g ae/ha. At 14 DAT johnsongrass control without pyrithiobac was more than 85% for all graminicides all years except sethoxydim in 1993. When graminicides were applied in combination with pyrithiobac, johnsongrass control was 86% or less and was lower than when each respective graminicide was applied alone. At 21 DAT, similar differences were apparent. Seed cotton yield, determined only one year, was not affected by reductions in johnsongrass control when either quizalofop or clethodim were used in combination with pyrithiobac. Pyrithiobac applied alone controlled johnsongrass 20 to 44% 14 DAT depending on year.

Studies were conducted at the Vegetable Substation in Kibler, AR, in 1992 and 1993, in the same plots, to evaluate weed suppression by spring-seeded cover crops and to determine the effects of cover crop and imazethapyr on no-till southern pea. A plot without cover, conventionally tilled before planting southern pea, served as control. Weed control treatments, applied as subplots in each cover crop, included a weedy check, handweeded check, and half and full rates of imazethapyr (0.035 and 0.07 kg/ha) followed by sethoxydim (0.22 kg/ha). Biomass of Palmer amaranth 6 WAR without herbicides, was less in Italian ryegrass and sorghum-sudangrass residues than in oat residue and no cover crop. Over the years, Palmer amaranth density increased 333% without cover crops and 28% with cover crops. Rice flatsedge density increased four to five times in oat and sorghum-sudangrass residues but remained the same in Italian ryegrass residue. In general, Italian ryegrass residue suppressed the most weeds. Oat residue was least suppressive. Italian ryegrass and sorghum-sudangrass also reduced southern pea stand. Regardless of cover crop and year, half and full rates of imazethapyr followed by sethoxydim equally reduced density of Palmer amaranth, goosegrass, large crabgrass, southwestern cupgrass, and rice flatsedge compared with the untreated check. Residual control of Palmer amaranth by imazethapyr was higher at the full rate than the reduced rate, regardless of cover crop. Half rate of imazethapyr followed by sethoxydim controlled 94 to 100% of Palmer amaranth, rice flatsedge, large crabgrass, and southwestern cupgrass late in the season, regardless of cover crop in 1992 and 1993. Southern pea yield in untilled plots with cover crops was two to three times lower than yield in plots with preplant tillage and no cover crops mostly because of reduction in crop stand in the presence of cover crops.

Tolerance of direct-seeded pepper under clear plastic mulch to herbicides applied pre- and post-emergence was investigated in 1991 and 1992. Weed control of herbicides applied preemergence was also studied. Paprika cultivar ‘Buketen’ and canning cultivars ‘Piquillo de Lodosa’ and ‘Pico de Mendavia’ were seeded in the field in Zaragoza, Spain, in a loamy soil. Percent emergence, plant mortality after the postemergence treatment, dry weight of plants, and fruit weight were recorded. Pepper was tolerant to diphenamid and napropamide applied preemergence but these herbicides did not control broadleaf weeds. Clomazone, when applied preemergence resulted in chlorotic seedlings and at 2 kg ai/ha reduced the final stand, but was selective when applied at the 6 to 8-leaf stage of the crop. Pepper was tolerant to diethatyl-ethyl when applied preemergence. However, diethatyl-ethyl applied postemergence caused severe phytotoxicity symptoms, and when mixed with diphenamid, fruit ripeness in 1992 was delayed. Weed control during the crop emergence period was better when diethatyl-ethyl was used mixed with diphenamid or napropamide.

The comparison of incorporation vs no incorporation on a mid-October application of the granular formulation of trifluralin to control infestations of wild oat and green foxtail was evaluated in spring barley, wheat, and canola in west central Saskatchewan over a 3 yr period. Incorporation treatments consisted of: no incorporation, one incorporation in fall, one incorporation in fall and a second in spring, one incorporation in fall and two additional incorporations in spring. All treatments eliminated green foxtail. In all three crops wild oat panicle counts were equivalent from incorporated and non-incorporated trifluralin. Wild oat fresh weights in crops grown on stubble were similar for incorporated and non-incorporated trifluralin. In fallow crops, wild oat fresh weight reductions were greater in three of nine site years with incorporation. There was little difference in crop yields from incorporated and non-incorporated trifluralin.

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effect of 22 postemergence corn broadleaf herbicide combinations on the efficacy of sethoxydim applied to giant foxtail, large crabgrass, and shattercane. Eighteen combinations caused a reduction in sethoxydim efficacy on at least one grass species. Dicamba, atrazine plus dicamba, atrazine plus bentazon, bromoxynil, primisulfuron, CGA-152005 plus primisulfuron, MON 12000, and flumetsulam plus clopyralid plus 2,4-D (NAF-73) were evaluated further on the efficacy and foliar absorption of sethoxydim applied to giant foxtail, large crabgrass, and shattercane. In timing studies, applying all herbicide combinations at 7 or 3 d before sethoxydim application eliminated significant antagonistic interactions. However, applying NAF-73, primisulfuron, or CGA-152005 plus primisulfuron 1 d prior resulted in a reduction in sethoxydim efficacy on at least one grass species. Dicamba, atrazine plus dicamba, and atrazine plus bentazon decreased 14C-sethoxydim absorption 9 to 63% across grass species. Replacing crop oil concentrate (COC) with DASH increased sethoxydim absorption when applied with these herbicides but not to the full extent of sethoxydim applied alone with DASH. Sethoxydim efficacy was retained or improved with DASH when applied with dicamba, atrazine plus dicamba, atrazine plus bentazon, or bromoxynil. When primisulfuron, CGA-152005 plus primisulfuron, MON 12000, or NAF-73 was applied with 14C-sethoxydim no effect on sethoxydim absorption was observed. DASH was less effective than COC at restoring sethoxydim efficacy when applied with these herbicides.

A field study was conducted from 1987 to 1992 to determine the effectiveness of several treatments consisting of combinations of glyphosate and/or quizalofop with tillage to control quackgrass in legume plowdown and continuous annual crop rotations. The treatments were imposed on the quackgrass in 1987 and/or 1988, evaluated in 1989 (cycle 1), reimposed on the same plots in 1990 and/or 1991 and re-evaluated in 1992 (cycle 2). Where continuous barley was grown, glyphosate applied at 0.45 kg/ha before seeding in 1987 (cycle 1) and 1990 (cycle 2), and combined with fall tillage in the first two years of each cycle, reduced quackgrass shoot density and rhizome dry weight by more than 96%. In a legume plowdown rotation, consisting of barley underseeded to red clover followed by plowdown and barley in subsequent years, quackgrass was reduced by a similar amount by glyphosate at 0.45 kg/ha applied in 1987 and 1990 before seeding or in 1988 and 1991 at 5 d before or 6 wk after red clover plowdown. Quackgrass reduction from all of these treatments was as effective as the labelled rate of glyphosate (0.90 kg/ha) applied at the same times, and also as effective as glyphosate applied at 0.45 kg/ha in combination with tillage in a year of fallow. Without fall tillage the efficacy of glyphosate applied before seeding was reduced. Quizalofop at 0.20 kg/ha applied to canola in a rotation of canola followed by two years of barley, reduced quackgrass, but was less effective than glyphosate treatments with fall tillage. Reducing quackgrass populations resulted in significant increases in crop yields.

Germinated seeds of wild oat populations that were susceptible (S) or resistant (R) to triallate at the recommended soil-applied rate (1.7 kg/ha) were treated with six triallate concentrations on filter paper in petri dishes. Measurement of shoot length 8 d after treatment provided an accurate indication of differences among populations, and was more reliable than determining shoot fresh weight. ED50 values (herbicide concentrations that reduced shoot length by 50% relative to untreated controls), derived from nonlinear regression analysis, indicated four and five levels of response to triallate among eight S and seven R populations, respectively. The ED50 values varied from 0.11 to 11 ppm a.i. triallate for the most susceptible to the most resistant populations, respectively. Routine testing of wild oat samples suspected of resistance, at triallate concentrations of 0.5 or 1 ppm in the petri dish bioassay, effectively identified populations that had become resistant to the recommended soil-applied rate.
