Four indices of visual performance were measured in control macaques and in macaques that had been exposed to monomeric acrylamide, a neurotoxicant that preferentially damages P retinal ganglion cells. Morphological examination of the retina and visual pathways of these monkeys showed virtually complete loss of P ganglion cells over a region extending to at least 40 deg from the fovea, and relative sparing of M ganglion cells. The four tests examined visual functions for which the visual pathway from P ganglion cells might be of great importance: visual acuity, contrast discrimination, hyperacuity, and shape discrimination.

In the acrylamide-dosed monkeys, visual acuity was reduced slightly more than fourfold, a somewhat larger reduction than that seen previously after ibotenic-acid lesions of the P pathway in the geniculate. The residual acuity was in good agreement with the Nyquist frequency calculated from the density of ON or OFF M ganglion cells. Contrast increment thresholds were elevated for the dosed monkeys only in one of the two conditions tested. The elevation was found only under those spatiotemporal conditions for which we have previously shown that contrast thresholds are increased by acrylamide exposure, and was most marked at low background contrasts. Vernier acuity was elevated in one dosed monkey, but not affected in a second monkey that also had severe loss of P ganglion cells. Finally, we found no effect of acrylamide exposure on the number of training trials required to learn simple or complex shape discriminations. These results support previous findings in showing that the P pathway mediates visual acuity, and they show that several other important aspects of visual perception are not exclusively dependent on the P pathway.

The ability of the visual system to detect stimuli that vary along dimensions other than luminance or color— “second-order” stimuli—has been of considerable interest in recent years. An important unresolved issue is whether different types of second-order stimuli are detected by a single, all purpose, mechanism, or by mechanisms that are specific to stimulus type. Using a conventional psychophysical paradigm, we show that for a class of second-order stimuli—textures sinusoidally modulated in orientation (OM), spatial frequency (FM), and contrast (CM)—the human visual system employs mechanisms that are selective to stimulus type. Whereas the addition of a subthreshold mask to a test pattern of the same stimulus type was found to facilitate the detection of the test, no facilitation was observed when mask and test were of different types, suggesting mechanism independence for the different types of stimulus. This finding raises the important question of whether mechanism independence is compatible with the well-known filter-rectify-filter (FRF) model of second-order stimulus detection, since FRF mechanisms, in principle, do not discriminate between stimulus types. We show that for all mask/test combinations except those with CM masks, the FRF mechanism giving the largest response to the test modulation is largely unaffected by subthreshold levels of a different stimulus-type mask. For this reason, we cannot rule out the possibility that FRF mechanisms mediate the detection of our stimuli. For combinations involving CM masks, however, we propose that a process of contrast normalization renders the test stimulus insensitive to the mask stimulus.

Cadherins are homophilic cell adhesion molecules that control development of a variety of tissues and maintenance of adult structures. Although cadherins have been implicated in the development of the brain, including the visual system, in several vertebrate species, little is known of their role in zebrafish. In this study, we examined distribution of cadherin-2 (Cdh2, N-cadherin) in the visual system of developing and adult zebrafish using both immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization methods, and we compared Cdh2 distribution to that of the previously reported and closely related cadherin-4 (Cdh4, R-cadherin). As in other vertebrates, in zebrafish embryos Cdh2 was widely expressed in the early nervous system, but its expression became more restricted as development proceeded. Cdh4 was not detectable until later in development, at about the time when the first ganglion cells are generated. Cdh2 and Cdh4 were expressed in distinct regions of developing visual structures, including the lens. We hypothesize that the differential expression of these two cadherins in developing zebrafish visual structures reflects functionally different roles in the development of the vertebrate visual system.

Goldfish cones contain CB1 receptors at the synaptic terminal, selectively accumulate 3H-anandamide, and contain fatty acid amide hydrolase-immunoreactivity, and voltage-gated calcium and potassium currents are modulated by CB1 ligands (Yazulla et al., 2000; Fan & Yazulla, 2003; Glaser et al., 2005). These data suggest that a retinal mechanism may account for some of the psychophysical effects of cannabis. Here, we studied the effect of a cannabinoid agonist on cone light responses. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings were made from cones in the isolated goldfish retina. Cones were stimulated with a spot of light of variable wavelength and intensities in combination with voltage-and current-clamp protocols. Pharmacological manipulation was performed using the cannabinoid agonist WIN 55212-2 (10 μM). WIN had no effect on the absolute sensitivity of the cones or on the kinetics of the onset response. However, the light-offset response became faster, and the depolarizing overshoot was enhanced. Time constant of the offset response was reduced from 292 ± 28 ms to 180 ± 11 ms (n = 6) (P < 0.01) in the presence of WIN. Acceleration of the offset response was not affected by flash length from 200 ms to 10 s. This was found under current-clamp as well as under voltage-clamp conditions, indicating that the effect of WIN was mediated directly or indirectly by modulation of the cGMP-gated channels in the outer segment of the cones. The effects of WIN were not blocked by the CB1 antagonist SR141716A. With a train of “dark” flashes from a steady background, the photocurrent recovered toward baseline more quickly with WIN than in Control. In summary, cannabinoids speed up the dynamics of the phototransduction deactivation cascade in the cone outer segments. The functional consequence of this effect is to shorten the recovery time to the offset of bright flashes, perhaps resulting in an increase in contrast sensitivity.

The lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of every primate examined contains a set of small relay cells in addition to separate sets of magnocellular and parvocellular relay cells. These small cells receive a direct retinal projection, and an indirect retinal projection via the superior colliculus (SC). Receptive-field analyses of the small LGN cells in the bush baby, a lorisiform primate, indicate that this cell class is composed of subclasses, similar in physiology to cat W cells. In an effort to identify some of these subclasses, we have examined the morphological features of retinal and collicular axonal arbors that end on small W-like cells in the LGN of the bush baby, Galago crassicaudatus. Small cells in this species are found in a prominent pair of koniocellular (K) layers as well as the interlaminar zones (ILZs).

Retinal arbors were examined by bulk iontophoretic injection of horseradish peroxidase into the optic tract. Collicular arbors were filled via iontophoretic injection of biocytin into the superficial layers of the SC. Forty-eight axon arbors were completely reconstructed and quantitatively evaluated. Our findings show that retinal and collicular axon terminals differ in morphology on the basis of a number of criteria. Our analyses also suggest that retinal axons may have a stronger influence on K cells and collicular axons have a stronger influence on ILZ cells. The ramifications of these findings are provocative since these small LGN cells are known to project directly to the cytochrome-oxidase (CO) blobs within striate cortex. This relationship suggests that CO blob cells receive complex visual input not only from magnocellular and parvocellular LGN cells, but also from small cell pathways that are differentially influenced by retinal and collicular cells.

The bidirectional axonal transport capabilities of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique facilitated the study of the frontal-eye-field (FEF) input and pretectal output of two regions of extrastriate preoccipital cortex (POC). Following horseradish peroxidase (HRP) gel implants into the middle and dorsal POC in two rhesus monkeys, the middle POC implant demonstrated retrograde frontal cortical labeling largely restricted to the inferior frontal eye field (iFEF) and adjacent inferior prefrontal convexity, whereas the dorsal POC implant showed labeling in the caudal ventral bank of the superior ramus of the arcuate sulcus (sas) and middle-to-dorsal region of the rostral bank of the concavity of the arcuate sulcus (dorsal FEF). Prominent anterogradely labeled efferent preoccipital projections were observed to the ipsilateral pretectal olivary nucleus (PON) and to a lesser extent the anterior pretectal nucleus. Although the middle POC case had heavier projections to the lateral PON, the dorsal case projected more heavily to the medial PON. In addition, both implants demonstrated subcortical connections with the lateral and dorsal inferior pulvinar nuclei, central superior lateral thalamic intralaminar nucleus, caudate nucleus, and middle-to-ventral claustrum. However, while the middle POC implant had efferent projections to the superficial superior colliculus (SC), pregeniculate nucleus (PGN), lateral terminal accessory optic nucleus (LTN), and dorsolateral pontine nucleus (DLPN), resembling those previously reported for the middle temporal (MT) visual area (Maunsell & Van Essen, 1982; Ungerleider et al., 1984), the dorsal implant had projections to the lateral intermediate SC, zona incerta (ZI), PGN, a notably lesser projection to the LTN, and basilar pontine projections to the lateral and lateral dorsal pontine subnuclei (not including the extreme dorsolateral DLPN).

These preliminary results suggest that the preoccipital cortex, which reportedly functions in pupillary constriction, accommodation, and convergence, entertains connections with the PON and other visuomotorrelated structures, and thus could act as an intermediary in the pathway between the iFEF and PON, and provide a possible explanation for pupillary effects that occur with stimulation of the FEF (Jampel, 1960) and within the context of other oculomotor activities. The findings shed light on certain differences in connections of middle vs. dorsal POC with visuomotor-related nuclei, and appear to suggest that the middle region, which receives input from the iFEF, has greater access to the optokinetic (OKN) system by virtue of its projection to the LTN, and to the smooth-pursuit system by virtue of its projection to the DLPN.

In an aseptic operation under surgical anesthesia, one optic nerve of a cat was exposed and subjected to pressure by means of a special cuff. The conduction of impulses through the pressurized region was monitored by means of electrodes which remained in the animal after the operation. The pressure was adjusted to selectively eliminate conduction in the largest fibers (Y-type) but not in the medium-size fibers (X-type). The conduction block is probably due to a demyelination and remains complete for about 3 weeks. Within 2 weeks after the pressure-block operation, recordings were made from single neurons in the striate cortex (area 17, area VI) of the cat anesthetized with N2O/O2 mixture supplemented by continuous intravenous infusion of barbiturate. Neurons were activated visually via the normal eye and via the eye with the pressure-blocked optic nerve (“Y-blocked eye”). Several properties of the receptive fields of single neurons in area 17 such as S (simple) or C (complex) type of receptive-field organization, size of discharge fields, orientation tuning, direction-selectivity indices, and end-zone inhibition appear to be unaffected by removal of the Y-type input. On the other hand, the peak discharge rates to stimuli presented via the Y-blocked eye were significantly lower than those to stimuli presented via the normal eye. As a result, the eye-dominance histogram was shifted markedly towards the normal eye implying that there is a significant excitatory Y-type input to area 17. In a substantial proportion of area 17 neurons, this input converges onto the cells which receive also non-Y-type inputs. In one respect, velocity sensitivity, removal of the Y input had a weak but significant effect. In particular, C (but not S) cells when activated via the normal eye responded optimally at slightly higher stimulus velocities than when activated via the Y-blocked eye. These results suggest that the Y input makes a distinct contribution to velocity sensitivity in area 17 but only in C-type neurons. Overall, our results lead us to the conclusion that the Y-type input to the striate cortex of the cat makes a significant contribution to the strength of the excitatory response of many neurons in this area. However, the contributions of Y-type input to the mechanism(s) underlying many of the receptive-field properties of neurons in this area are not distinguishable from those of the non-Y-type visual inputs.

Genetically modified mice lacking the β2 laminin chain (β2null), the γ3 laminin chain (γ3 null), or both β2/γ3 chains (compound null) were produced. The development of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactive neurons in these mouse lines was studied between birth and postnatal day (P) 20. Compared to wild type mice, no alterations were seen in γ3 null mice. In β2 null mice, however, the large, type I TH neurons appeared later in development, were at a lower density and had reduced TH immunoreactivity, although TH process number and size were not altered. In the compound null mouse, the same changes were observed together with reduced TH process outgrowth. Surprisingly, in the smaller, type II TH neurons, TH immunoreactivity was increased in laminin-deficient compared to wild type mice. Other retinal defects we observed were a patchy disruption of the inner limiting retinal basement membrane and a disoriented growth of Müller glial cells. Starburst and AII type amacrine cells were not apparently altered in laminin-deficient relative to wild type mice. We postulate that laminin-dependent developmental signals are conveyed to TH amacrine neurons through intermediate cell types, perhaps the Müller glial cell and/or the retinal ganglion cell.

Color appearance judgments revealed fundamental differences in visual processing of incremental and decremental lights. First, the balance of cone activation required for a light to appear achromatic was different for increments and decrements (Judd, 1940; Helson & Michels, 1948). Second, adaptation-the visual system's adjustment to background light – affected achromatic decrements more than increments. Third, the regulation of adaptation for incremental and decremental stimuli depended differently on background signals from the three cone types. We interpret these asymmetries as differences in mechanisms of adaptation in the ON and OFF pathways, and suggest that they evolved to accommodate the range and physical sources of color signals in the two pathways.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of visual impairment in people older than 50 years in Western countries, affecting essential tasks such as reading and face recognition. Here we investigated the mechanisms underlying the deficit in recognition of facial expressions in an AMD population with low vision. Pictures of faces displaying different emotions with the mouth open or closed were centrally displayed for 300 ms. Participants with AMD with low acuity (mean 20/200) and normally sighted age-matched controls performed one of two emotion tasks: detecting whether a face had an expression or not (expressive/non expressive (EXNEX) task) or categorizing the facial emotion as happy, angry, or neutral (categorization of expression (CATEX) task). Previous research has shown that healthy observers are mainly using high spatial frequencies in an EXNEX task while performance at a CATEX task was preferentially based on low spatial frequencies. Due to impaired processing of high spatial frequencies in central vision, we expected and observed that AMD participants failed at deciding whether a face was expressive or not but categorized normally the emotion of the face (e.g., happy, angry, neutral). Moreover, we observed that AMD participants mostly identified emotions using the lower part of the face (mouth). Accuracy did not differ between the two tasks for normally sighted observers. The results indicate that AMD participants are able to identify facial emotion but must base their decision mainly on the low spatial frequencies, as they lack the perception of finer details.

Absorbance spectra of rods and some cones were measured by microspectrophotometry in 22 fish species from the brackish-water of the Baltic Sea, and when applicable, in the same species from the Atlantic Ocean (3 spp.), the Mediterranean Sea (1 sp.), or Finnish fresh-water lakes (9 spp.). The main purpose was to study whether there were differences suggesting spectral adaptation of rod vision to different photic environments during the short history (<104 years) of postglacial isolation of the Baltic Sea and the Finnish lakes. Rod absorbance spectra of the Baltic subspecies/populations of herring (Clupea harengus membras), flounder (Platichthys flesus), and sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) were all long-wavelength-shifted (9.8, 1.9, and 5.3 nm, respectively, at the wavelength of maximum absorbance, λmax) compared with their truly marine counterparts, consistent with adaptation for improved quantum catch, and improved signal-to-noise ratio of vision in the Baltic light environment. Judged by the shape of the spectra, the chromophore was pure A1 in all these cases; hence the differences indicate evolutionary tuning of the opsin. In no species of fresh-water origin did we find significant opsin-based spectral shifts specific to the Baltic populations, only spectral differences due to varying A1/A2 chromophore ratio in some. For most species, rod λmax fell within a wavelength range consistent with high signal-to-noise ratio of vision in the spectral conditions prevailing at depths where light becomes scarce in the respective waters. Exceptions were sandeels in the Baltic Sea, which are active only in bright light, and all species in a “brown” lake, where rod λmax lay far below the theoretically optimal range.

A-type ganglion cells of the mouse retina represent the visual channel that transfers temporal changes of the outside world very fast and with high fidelity. In this study we combined anatomical and physiological methods in order to study the glycinergic, inhibitory input of A-type ganglion cells. Immunocytochemical studies were performed in a transgenic mouse line whose ganglion cells express green fluorescent protein (GFP). The cells were double labeled for GFP and the four α subunits of the glycine receptor (GlyR). It was found that most of the glycinergic input of A-type cells is through fast, α1-expressing synapses. Whole-cell currents were recorded from A-type ganglion cells in retinal whole mounts. The response to exogenous application of glycine and spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) were measured. By comparing glycinergic currents recorded in wildtype mice and in mice with specific deletions of GlyRα subunits (Glra1spd-ot, Glra2−/−, Glra3−/−), the subunit composition of GlyRs of A-type ganglion cells could be further defined. Glycinergic sIPSCs of A-type ganglion cells have fast kinetics (decay time constant τ = 3.9 ± 2.5 ms, mean ± SD). Glycinergic sIPSCs recorded in Glra2−/− and Glra3−/− mice did not differ from those of wildtype mice. However, the number of glycinergic sIPSCs was significantly reduced in Glra1spd-ot mice and the remaining sIPSCs had slower kinetics than in wildtype mice. The results show that A-type ganglion cells receive preferentially kinetically fast glycinergic inputs, mediated by GlyRs composed of α1 and β subunits.

Most cells in the retina and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of primates have a concentric center/surround receptive-field organization. Details of the relationship between center and surround often can be used to predict how cells respond to visual stimuli. Models of the receptive-field organization and center/surround relationships also are useful when comparing cell classes. In the present study, we used the difference-of-Gaussians (DOG) model to quantitatively examine and compare the receptive-field center/surround organization of koniocellular (K), magnocellular (M), and parvocellular (P) LGN cells of owl monkeys. We obtained estimates of receptive-field center size (rc) and center sensitivity (Kc), and surround size (rs), and surround sensitivity (Ks) from 62 K, M, and P LGN cells by fitting their spatial-frequency responses with a DOG function (Rodieck, 1965; Croner & Kaplan, 1995). The DOG function not only accounted for the responses of P and M cells, but also provided a good description of K-cell responses. We found that at matched eccentricities of less than 15 deg, K cells had the largest rc and rs among the three cell classes. K cells also had the lowest Kc and Ks.

Tyrosine hydroxylase-immunolabeled wholemounts and sections of rat and monkey retina were observed at both the light- and electron-microscopic level. Small processes derived from sclerally directed processes of dopaminergic interplexiform cells were observed ascending to the outer nuclear layer where they were distributed between photoreceptor cells. A role in the regulation of disc shedding and/or melatonin biosynthesis is proposed for dopamine released at this level.

Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) has been shown to potentiate current responses elicited by activation of the GABAA receptor (IGABA) in freshly dissociated ganglion cells of the rat retina. Here we tested the hypothesis that this heteroreceptor cross talk is mediated by an intracellular cascade of events that includes the sequential activation of a stimulatory guanine nucleotide binding (Gs) protein and adenylate cyclase, the subsequent increase in levels of cyclic AMP and, finally, the action of the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA). Intracellular dialysis of freshly dissociated ganglion cells with GTPγs irreversibly potentiated IGABA, while GDPßs either decreased or had no effect on IGABA. Additionally, GDPßs blocked the potentiation of IGABA by VIP. Cholera toxin rendered VIP ineffective in potentiating IGABA, while pertussis toxin had no effect on the VIP-induced potentiation of IGABA. Extracellular application of either forskolin or 8-bromo-cyclic AMP potentiated IGABA, as did the introduction of cyclic AMP directly into the intracellular compartment through the recording pipet. Intracellular application of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) potentiated IGABA, while a PKA inhibitor blocked the potentiating effect of VIP. These results lead us to conclude that activation of a cyclic AMP-dependent second-messenger system mediates the modulation of GABAA receptor function by VIP in retinal ganglion cells.

Vertebrate photoreceptors are unusual neurons in that they are capable of continuous calcium-mediated release of neurotransmitter (Trifonov, 1968; Hagins et al., 1970). In this study, we have examined the development and characteristics of calcium currents in chick cone cells placed in culture on embryonic day 8. Cone cells were identified by their lectin-binding properties, rhodopsin-like immunoreactivity, and the presence of an oil droplet. Using the whole-cell patch-clamp method, we have seen calcium currents in these cells after three days in culture, slightly before the appearance of synapses (Gleason & Wilson, 1989). Because cone calcium currents are blocked by cadmium and nifedipine but are enhanced by Bay K 8644, they most closely resemble L-type current (Nowycky et al., 1985). An unexpected feature of these currents is that their gating ranges varied widely between cells so that some cells showed the foot of their activation range at —70 mV and others as positive as —25 mV. Calcium imaging of fura-2 loaded cells was used to confirm the time course of calcium current development and describe the distribution of cytosolic calcium. As expected, depolarization of young cells failed to increase cytosolic calcium but in older cells an increase of threefold to fourfold was usually observed. Both at rest and during depolarization, most cone cells showed regional differences in internal calcium concentration. In the most mature cones, depolarization strongly elevated cytosolic calcium at the terminal end of the cell while producing a lesser change around the oil droplet and the ellipsoid region, suggesting that calcium channels are localized to the terminal.

Retinal prosthetic devices are being developed to bypass degenerated retinal photoreceptors by directly activating retinal neurons with electrical stimulation. However, the retinal circuitry that is activated by epiretinal stimulation is not well characterized. Whole-cell patch clamp recordings were obtained from ganglion cells in normal and rd mice using flat-mount and retinal slice preparations. A stimulating electrode was positioned along the ganglion cell side of the preparation at different distances from the stimulated tissue. Pulses of cathodic current evoked action potentials in ganglion cells and less frequently evoked sustained inward currents that appeared synaptic in origin. Sustained currents reversed around ECl and were inhibited by blockade of α-amino-3-hydroxyl-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-proprionate (AMPA)-type glutamate receptors with 2,3-dihydroxy-6-nitro-sulfamoyl-benzo(f)-quinoxaline-2,3-dione (NBQX), γ aminobutyric acid a/c (GABAa/c) receptors with picrotoxinin, or glycine receptors with strychnine. This suggests that epiretinal stimulation activates glutamate release from bipolar cell terminals, which in turn evokes release of GABA and glycine from amacrine cells. Synaptic current thresholds were lower in ON ganglion cells than OFF cells, but the modest difference did not attain statistical significance. Synaptic currents were rarely observed in rd mice lacking photoreceptors compared to normal retina. In addition, confocal calcium imaging experiments in normal mice retina slices revealed that epiretinal stimulation evoked calcium increases in the outer plexiform layer. These results imply a contribution from photoreceptor inputs to the synaptic currents observed in ganglion cells. The paucity of synaptic responses in rd mice retina slices suggests that it is better to target retinal ganglion cells directly rather than to attempt to engage the inner retinal circuitry.

Three 5-HT receptors have been implicated in retinal processing but positive identification of the receptors and the localization of receptor subtypes in the retina have not been achieved. In this study, molecular techniques were used to identify one class of 5-HT receptor—5-HT2a—in the retina, and immunohistochemical techniques were used to localize the receptor in the retinal network. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) techniques were used to identify a segment of the rabbit 5-HT2a gene; a 422 base fragment was identified, cloned, and sequenced. The fragment shows a high degree (ca. 90%) of nucleotide sequence identity with the 5-HT2a receptor gene from other mammals. 5-HT2a immunoreactivity was seen in both the inner and outer plexiform (synaptic) layers of the retina. Using cell-type-specific markers, the 5-HT2a immunoreactivity was shown to be on the terminals of photoreceptor and rod bipolar cells. This association of 5-HT2a receptors with these two synapses suggests that serotonin may be a modulator of synaptic function in the retina.

The contrast response function of early visual evoked potentials elicited by sinusoidal gratings is known to exhibit characteristic potentials closely associated with the processes of parvocellular and magnocellular pathways. Specifically, the N1 component has been linked with parvocellular processes, while the P1 component has been linked with magnocellular processes. However, little is known regarding the response properties of the N1 and P1 components during the processing and encoding of complex (i.e., broadband) stimuli such as natural scenes. Here, we examine how established physical characteristics of natural scene imagery modulate the N1 and P1 components in humans by providing a systematic investigation of component modulation as visual stimuli are gradually built up from simple sinusoidal gratings to highly complex natural scene imagery. The results suggest that the relative dominance in signal output of the N1 and P1 components is dependent on spatial frequency (SF) luminance contrast for simple stimuli up to natural scene imagery possessing few edges. However, such a dependency shifts to a dominant N1 signal for natural scenes possessing abundant edge content and operates independently of SF luminance contrast.

Based on comparative anatomical studies and electrophysiological experiments, we have identified a conserved subset of neurons in the lamina, medulla, and lobula of dipterous insects that are involved in retinotopic visual motion direction selectivity. Working from the photoreceptors inward, this neuronal subset includes lamina amacrine (α) cells, lamina monopolar (L2) cells, the basket T-cell (T1 or β), the transmedullary cell Tm1, and the T5 bushy T-cell. Two GABA-immunoreactive neurons, the transmedullary cell Tm9 and a local interneuron at the level of T5 dendrites, are also implicated in the motion computation. We suggest that these neurons comprise the small-field elementary motion detector circuits the outputs of which are integrated by wide-field lobula plate tangential cells. We show that a computational model based on the available data about these neurons is consistent with existing models of biological elementary motion detection, and present a comparable version of the Hassenstein-Reichardt (HR) correlation model. Further, by using the model to synthesize a generic tangential cell, we show that it can account for the responses of lobula plate tangential cells to a wide range of transient stimuli, including responses which cannot be predicted using the HR model. This computational model of elementary motion detection is the first which derives specifically from the functional organization of a subset of retinotopic neurons supplying the lobula plate. A key prediction of this model is that elementary motion detector circuits respond quite differently to small-field transient stimulation than do spatially integrated motion processing neurons as observed in the lobula plate. In addition, this model suggests that the retinotopic motion information provided to wide-field motion-sensitive cells in the lobula is derived from a less refined stage of processing than motion inputs to the lobula plate.
