It is not proposed that the time of this meeting should be taken up by a monologue of mine in the shape of a set paper. I intend only to mark out the ground which can be profitably covered, and after dealing myself with one or two of the questions raised, I shall leave the remainder to other members present. After that it is hoped that there will follow a general discussion commensurate with the importance of the subject.

Gjessing has taken a leading part in the clinical investigation of mental illness during the past twenty-five years. We believe it would be in accordance with his wishes that, in presenting a profile to mark the occasion of his seventieth birthday, we should choose to describe Gjessing's research interests and scientific achievements rather than his personal qualities.

Recent observers have differed considerably as to the incidence of neurosis among dyspeptics in the services. Whereas Hinds-Howell (1) only found about 8 per cent. of neurotic dyspepsia in a group of cases, Hartfall (2) considered that 60 per cent. of his cases, with or without ulcers, had a neurotic basis. A leading article in the Lancet on June 20, 1942 (3), stated that dyspepsia is often a manifestation of neurosis, that anxiety neurotic features are frequently associated, and that most patients are constitutional neuropaths.

The history of in-patient units for the psychiatric treatment of children in the United Kingdom is largely confined to recent years. Their number is now slowly expanding, and there are approximately 60 in-patient psychiatric units for children and adolescents (R.M.P.A. 1970; Department of Health and Social Security, 1970).

Oxypertine (Integrin, Winthrop Laboratories) is a phenylpiperazine derivative unrelated to the phenothiazines or benzodiazepines. It has powerful anti-psychotic properties demonstrated in early trials and reviewed by Skarbek and Jacobsen (1965).

A case of anorexia nervosa associated with gastric rugal hyperplasia in a 36-year-old male is reported and some speculations are made about the relationship between these two conditions.
