This paper describes current progress in a project to develop robotic systems for locating underground chemical sources. There are a number of economic and humanitarian applications for this technology. Finding unexploded ordinance, land mines, and sources of leaks from pipes and tanks are some examples. Initial experiments were conducted using an ethanol chemical source buried in coarse sand. To gain an understanding of the sensory environment that would be experienced by a robot burrowing through the ground, the factors affecting transport of chemical vapour through soil were investigated. A robot search algorithrn was then developed for gathering chemical gradient inforrnation and using this to guide a robot towards the source. Experiments were performed using a chemical sensing probe positioned by a UMI RTX robot manipulator arm. The resulting system was successful in locating a source of ethanol vapour buried in sand. This paper includes details of experiments to characterise the sand used in this project, the robot search algorithm, sensor probe and results of source location trials.

This paper describes the development of a system that is capable of tiling mosaics using a robot according to requirements of the individual customer. The art of mosaic, in one form or another, has been practiced manually for thousands of years. Modern developments in materials and production techniques could be found as evidence that mosaic is very much alive in the new millennium. It is very costly and also difficult to find skilful people to tile mosaic. Therefore a computer-assisted robotic system has been constructed and applied. To activate the system a particular algorithm has been developed and successfully applied on an available SCARA robot.

The manipulability index suggested by Yoshikava is an important tool for the design of mechanisms and their control. It represents a quantitative measure of the functionality and the ability for realizing some tasks or groups of tasks. This index is some kind of performance measure and should be taken into consideration in the design phase of a mechanism and also in the design of control algorithms.

In this paper two important properties of the manipulability index are investigated. The first part of the present work demonstrates that manipulability of a mechanism is independent of task space coordinates. In the second part, a proof of the independency of the manipulability index on the first DOF is given.

This invariance is important for simplification of the mechanism's Jacobian matrix and gives excellent insight into the dependences of configuration space coordinates on this index. Moreover, it proves that the manipulability index is determined only by relative positions of the mechanism itself and by the mechanism's geometry.

Finally, the properties of the manipulability index are illustrated by some examples for fundamental open kinematical chain structures.

In our previous work, we developed a compact 6-DOF haptic interface as a master device which achieved an effective manual teleoperation. The haptic interface contains a modified Delta parallel-link positioning mechanism. Parallel mechanisms are usually characterized by a high stiffness, which, however, is reduced by elastic deformations of both parts and bearings. Therefore, to design such a parallel mechanism, we should analyze its structural stiffness, including elastic deformations of both parts and bearings. Then we propose a simple method to analyze structural stiffness in a parallel mechanism using bearings. Our method is based on standard concepts such as static elastic deformations. However, the important aspect of our method is the manner in which we combine these concepts and how we obtain the value of the elasticity coefficient of a rotation axis in a bearing. Finally, we design a modified Delta mechanism, with a well-balanced stiffness, based on our method of stiffness analysis.

A new unified motion planning algorithm for autonomous Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator Systems (UVMS) has been presented in this paper. Commonly, a UVMS consists of two sub-systems, a vehicle and a manipulator, having vastly different dynamic responses. The proposed algorithm considers the variability in dynamic bandwidth of the complex UVMS system and generates not only kinematically admissible but also dynamically feasible reference trajectories. Additionally, this motion planning algorithm exploits the inherent kinematic redundancy of the whole system and provides reference trajectories that accommodates other important criteria such as thruster/actuator faults and saturations, and also minimizes hydrodynamic drag. Effectiveness of the proposed unified motion planning algorithm has been verified by extensive computer simulation. The results are quite promising.
