The years 1880–1914 were years of institutional growth and systemic consolidation for English banks. In the early and middle decades of the nineteenth century there had been a number of crises which had affected the banks of England and Wales. Ono effect was to raise anxieties about the liquidity of bank balance sheets, including fundamental questions about the composition of lending to the private sector. In particular, the paper discusses the procedures used by the banks to minimise risk and examines some aspects of actual lending practice as it applied to the industrial regions of Britain. There are three parts to the paper. The first briefly summarises the organisational and control structures that were introduced by the large joint-stock banks to standardise lending at their numerous branches. The second section introduces a schema for the assessment and monitoring of loans, and the third discusses some of the banks' pre-1914 practices with regard to loans to industry.

The autor deals with the need for researches based on the connection of private and public capital in the functioning of the royal finances in Catalonia of the 16th-century. B. This article analyzes the frequency of credit contracts negociated though bills of exchange dispatched on the fairs of Lyons and the associated speculative mechanisms that allow to evaluate the importance of fiscal and mercantile factors thats had intervened in the royal financial system in Catalonia.

Towards the year 1900, the Spanish countryside witnessed the emergence of an agricultural co-operative movement, formed by farmers of small or middle sized holdings. The importance of the economic activity thus generated is evaluated, whilst analysing some of the obstacles which prevented its development. The conclusion reached is, that despite the existence of some co-operative nuclei of great vitality, the Spanish agricultural co-operative movement during the first third of the 20th century, was characterised by decapitalisation and by a lack of consolidation. As a result, its capacity to introduce small scale farming was very limited.

This paper focusses on the financial relations between the banking sector and the Treasury in Modern Spain. Tax systems have been insufficient, generating a chronic budget deficit. This drove to irresponsible public debt management, being the State a serial defaulter until 1987. This prevented the budget deficits could be financed by sovereign debt issued on the stock exchanges, and forced the state to resort to banks (public and private). The new series of public debt banks portfolios evolution is explained by their pursuit of returns and by changes in banking regulation and financial repression, which favoured the banking status quo. The paper analyses the causes of banking regulation, derived from the public borrowing policy and also from the banking lobbying strategy. It examines the consequences of the deadly banking-state embrace which brought about the interconnection between fiscal and banking crises.

El objetivo de esta investigación es elaborar una serie anual de exportaciones e importaciones a precios corrientes que permita conocer de modo más preciso la evolución del comercio exterior español entre 1914 y 1935. En los últimos tiempos, muchos estudiosos de la historia económica han centrado sus investigaciones en diferentes aspectos de la economía española de este período, intentando aclarar las causas del crecimiento de la misma. Sin embargo, el estudio monográfico de la evolución y estructura del comercio exterior y su incidencia en la economía española del primer tercio del siglo xx no ha sido aún realizado y constituye un tema relegado en la historiografía moderna.

Industrial Revolution advance supposed the loss of a great part of traditional olive oil markets, however it caused some other possibilities, other markets, that up to that moment, the were unknown or the had such a small size that they were not considerable for this industry. This is the case of tinned fish, where olive oil was one of the most important inputs. This work has the following aims: first, to analyse the behaviour of Spanish olive oil in this market, paying attention to Norwegian tinned industry; second, to value the meaning of the companies and regions that take part; third, to compare the exports to this country with the exports to more important markets for Spanish olive oil.

Silver coins were an excellent instrument of payment in the seventeenth century, but given its high weight and value, its use and transport involved high risks and costs. Is it possible to estimate those costs? So far, we know how much the Spanish Crown paid to its bankers for money transport, but how much did the bankers themselves pay? And how much did other economic agents pay? What was cheaper: the use of bills of exchange or that of coins? How did the export of precious metals work in Spain?

El primer problema que se plantea al intentar evaluar el crecimiento del sector pesquero a lo largo del período 1880–1936 es la ausencia de datos estadísticos continuos y homogéneos. Aunque la primera estadistica de pesca data en España de 1829, no sera hasta el último tercio del siglo cuando los datos comiencen a ser mínimamente coherentes. Entre 1880 y 1936 se publicaron, completas o resumidas, veintisiete estadísticas, casi todas —veinticuatro— referentes al siglo XX, lo que nos deja prácticamente sin información para finales del Ochocientos. Esta penuria de datos se podría compensar con un análisis comparativo por años, pero, lamentablemehte, esto sólo es posible para los conceptos más generales, dada la diversidad de criterios utilizados según las épocas para la elaboración de las estadísticas. En efecto, cada reorganización de los servicios pesqueros trajo consigo cambios en la forma de elaborar los estados de pesca, hasta el punto que, atendiendo a este criterio, se pueden distinguir perfectamente tres etapas en la confección de la estadística pesquera:

The aim of this paper is to show the evolution of Spanish wheat output in the last decades of XIX century. The paper evaluates both the advances in statistical methods achieved by provincial agricultural scientists in the 80's, and the statistic consumption data published by the Ministry of Public Works in 1868. The main conclusion is that consumption and output of wheat between 1868 and 1890 were similar to those obtained for the period 1890–1896. This suggest that the Spanish and Italian cereal sectors behaved quite alike. The paper also proves that the tariff aproved by Cánovas had a powerful effect on the wheat pattern of consumption of the Spanish peasantry.

An abundant literature has insisted on the oligopolistic character of the Spanish banking system during the Francoism, a phenomenon led by the great institutions with undesirable consequences on the credit supply. In addition, oligopoly would have been backed by the authorities. Nevertheless, new documentation from bank's archives shows that collusion was full of difficulties and breaches, and also that the behaviour of the Government not always responded to the demand of the big banks.

Es generalizada la idea de que la revolución probabilística no se produjo en España hasta después de 1930 y que nuestro país fue un verdadero páramo donde se ignoraban las aplicaciones que la nueva metodología estadística, basada en los modelos de probabilidad que se habían desarrollado a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos en Europa, ofrecía a las ciencias sociales, en general, y a la demografía, a las compañías de seguros, a la especulación en Bolsa, a las actividades industriales y comerciales, etc. Este trabajo tiene la pretensiñn de poner de manifiesto el interés que algunos científicos españoles se tomaron para propagar estos conocimientos por su gran utilidad desde los inicios del surgimiento del Cálculo de Probabilidades, aunque no supieran (o no pudieran) crear una escuela que diera continuidad a sus aislados esfuerzos, intentos que también chocaron con la secular desidia de nuestra ciencia matemática a la que incomodaba cualquier conato de modernización.

The monetary policies of the decade studied had a direct influence on the evolution of real wages in Ecuador. The gold standard brought with it the increase in real wages until 1932. In February 1932, the Ecuadorian Government decided to abolish the gold standard which, together with a heavy public expenditure, produced a significant increase in money supply causing high levels of inflation. The evolution of real wages in Ecuador is similar to the evolution registered in Latin America in two important aspects: in both cases an upward trend in real wages can be observed once the international crisis began; after the increase in the purchasing power of wages, there is a decline. This study is the first research trying to understand the impact of the Great Depression in Ecuador through the evolution of real wages.

Aggregate estimates of British growth during the classical Industrial Revolution have been reassessed in the past decade and present a significantly revision of earlier views of British growth. Growth was slower dian previously believed and industrial change more localized and with a smaller impact Agricultural improvement and die relative ease with which labour moved to urban industry seems central to the experience. Although industry's impact now seems less than previously believed, industrial cities transformed society because die cotton textile industry expanded to exploit the advantage of its new technology and labour moved to the cities. But while exports expanded the share of industry and caused urbanization, they did not raise per capita income much because competition ensured that the benefits went to consumers. Finally, die specific features of die British industrial revolution seem to provide only weak guide to die growth process elsewhere.

La historiografía reciente sobre las ultimas décadas del Imperio español ha incidido cada vez más sobre aquellos aspectos de la política peninsular que pudieron haber contribuido a la pérdida de las colonias. La primera aportación importante en este campo apareció en la obra de Josep Fontana sobre la quiebra del Antiguo Régimen español en los años 1814–1820. Fontana mostró que la crisis económica de estos años puso al descubierto una contradicción insoluble entre la necesidad de modernizar la hacienda y la imposibilidad de efectuar reformas sustanciales dentro del marco institucional del Estado absoluto. El colapso de las rentas de aduanas y de los caudales de Indias obligó a depender de unos ingresos ordinarios reducidos a la mitad tras la guerra de la Independencia, y cuya insuficiencia no podía subsanarse ya con el agotado crédito público. No es de extrañar que, en estas circunstancias, la recuperatión de los ingresos coloniales aplastando los movimientos de secesión se planteara como la única alternativa viable a la modernizatión de la hacienda. Mientras tanto, los tímidos intentos de reforma fiscal en España fracasaron ante la oposición de los estamentos privilegiados, y el resultado hubo de ser la bancarrota del Estado y un aumento de la presión tributaria sobre el resto del país. El modelo de Fontana, apoyado como estaba en un triple análisis de la coyuntura economica, de la crisis fiscal y de sus mediaciones sociopolíticas, contenía ya los fundamentos para una interpretación global de la actuación española frente a las colonias en un marco temporal mucho más amplio.

Las siguientes páginas surgen con el propósito de presentar una fuente para el estudio de la historia rural de finales del Antiguo Régimen: los Cuadernos de la Riqueza, conjunto documental elaborado a partir de 1817 con motivo del establecimiento de la Contribución Generál del Reino. Para ello, se centrará la atención en el origen, naturaleza, proceso de confección, estructura, contenido y localización (en Cantabria) de esta fuente de carácter cuantitativo. El cuadro se completa con una exposición metodológica de algunas de las posibilidades y limitaciones que ofrece esta tan interesante como poco conocida documentación.

By using an analysis of the utilization of public resources by the liberal Spanish on the island of Cuba, the current report attempts to link the colonial world with the liberal Revolution in Spain. The study shows a series of incomes and expediture by the Cuban Colonial Treasure between 1826 and 1840. Its study reveals even increasing fiscal incomes on the island during this period. Concerning expenditure, the important chapter of sobrantes or cantidades remitidas a la península, deserves recognition, as it shows the availability of a good proportion of the public resources of the Colony to settle Metropolis' needs.

How much did the Dutch economy benefit from its expansion beyond the borders of Europe? The simple answer is provided by the Dutch spectators at international soccer games, when they start to encourage their team by singing about the great achievements of Piet Heyn, who as an admiral of the Dutch fleet captured the Spanish flota off the Cuban coast in 1628. This song implies that the Dutch economy was gready stimulated by a one-time injection of «Spanish coins» and oranges. No doubt, both were very welcome indeed, but they did not seem to have constituted die economic impetus that made a difference to the Dutch economy at the time.

A diferencia de la tendencia hacia la autarquía del conjunto de la economía española durante el primer tercio del siglo xx, los decenios iniciales de la centuria suponen en el País Valenciano un período en el que se consolidan sus vinculaciones con el mercado exterior, como resultado del espectacular aumento de las exportaciones. De esta forma, mientras los años que siguen a la contienda europea constituyen para España la etapa de culminación del modelo de crecimiento basado en la sustitución forzosa de importaciones y en el fomento directo de la demanda industrial por parte del Estado, para el País Valenciano, el decenio posterior a la guerra y, en especial, los años de la Dictadura de Primo de Rivera representan un período de auge y fortalecimiento de su tradición exportadora ante el rápido y sostenido aumento de la demanda europea.
