During the course of their evolution, massive stars lose a substantial fraction of their initial mass, both through steady winds and through relatively brief eruptions during their Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) phase. This talk reviews the dynamical driving of this mass loss, contrasting the line-driving of steady winds to the potential role of continuum driving for eruptions during LBV episodes when the star exceeds the Eddington limit. A key theme is to emphasize the inherent limits that self-shadowing places on line-driven mass loss rates, whereas continuum driving can in principle drive mass up to the “photon-tiring” limit, for which the energy to lift the wind becomes equal to the stellar luminosity. We review how the “porosity” of a highly clumped atmosphere can regulate continuum-driven mass loss, but also discuss recent time-dependent simulations of how base mass flux that exceeds the tiring limit can lead to flow stagnation and a complex, time-dependent combination of inflow and outflow regions. A general result is thus that porosity-mediated continuum driving in super-Eddington phases can explain the large, near tiring-limit mass loss inferred for LBV giant eruptions.

The momenta and start times measured from the TD diagrams in 3 seismic sources observed in the flare of 28 October 2003 are compared with those delivered to the photosphere by different kinds of high energy particles as well as by the hydrodynamic shocks caused by these particles. The energetic protons with energy power laws combined with quasi-thermal ones are shown to form hydrodynamic shocks deeply in a flaring atmosphere which deliver the required momentum to the photosphere within a measured timescale. The seismic waves observed in two sources associated with γ-rays can be explained by the momenta produced by hydrodynamic shocks caused by mixed proton beams and jets. The seismic wave in the source asociated with HXR only and delayed by 4 and 2 minutes from the first and second HXR bursts is likely to be associated with a hydrodynamic shock occurring from precipitation of a very powerful and hard electron beam possibly mixed with quasi-thermal lower energy protons.

The main objective of the Penn State/Toruń Centre for Astronomy search for planets around evolved stars is the detection of planetary systems around massive, evolved stars. We are also interested in the evolution of these systems on stellar evolution timescales. In this paper we present our approach to determine the basic physical parameters of our targets GK-giants. We also discuss the stellar activity indicators used in our survey: line bisector and curvature, and Hα variability.

Division I provides a focus for astronomers studying a wide range of problems related to fundamental physical phenomena such as time, the inertial reference frame, positions and proper motions of celestial objects, and precise dynamical computation of the motions of bodies in stellar or planetary systems in the Universe.

We study the propagation of relativistic jets originating from AGNs within the Interstellar/Intergalactic Medium of their host galaxies, and use it to build a model for the inihibition of stellar formation within the expanding cocoon.

In the past years a wealth of observations has allowed us to unravel the structural properties of the Dark and Luminous mass distribution in spirals. As result, it has been found that their rotation curves follow, out their virial radius, an Universal function (URC) made by two terms: one due to the gravitational potential of a Freeman stellar disk and the other due to that of a dark halo. The importance of the latter is found to decrease with galaxy mass. Individual objects reveal in detail that dark halos have a density core, whose size correlates with its central value. These properties will guide ΛCDM Cosmology to evolve to match the challenge that observations presently pose.

Submillimetre imaging polarimetry is one of the most powerful tools at present for studying magnetic fields in star-forming regions, and the only way to gain significant information on the structure of these fields. We present analysis of the largest sample (to date) of both high- and low-mass star-forming regions observed using this technique. A variety of magnetic field morphologies are observed, with no single field morphology favoured. Both the continuum emission morphologies and the field morphologies are generally more complex for the high-mass sample than the low-mass sample. The large scale magnetic field (observed with the JCMT; 14″ resolution) of NGC1333 IRAS2 is interpreted to be weak (compared to the energetic contributions due to turbulence) from the random field pattern observed. On smaller scales (observed with the BIMA array; 3″ resolution) the field is observed to be almost radial, consistent with the polarisation nulls in the JCMT data – suggesting that on smaller scales, the field may be more important to the star formation process. An analysis of the magnetic field direction and the jet/outflow axis is also discussed. Cumulative distribution functions of the difference between the mean position angle of the magnetic field vectors and the jet/outflow axis reveal no correlation. However, visual inspection of the maps reveal alignment of the magnetic field and jet/outflow axis in 7 out of 15 high-mass regions and 3 out of 8 low-mass regions.

Through polarization observations masers are unique probes of the magnetic field in a variety of different astronomical objects, with the different maser species tracing different physical conditions. In recent years maser polarization observations have provided insights in the magnetic field strength and morphology in, among others, the envelopes around evolved stars, Planetary Nebulae (PNe), massive star forming regions and supernova remnants. More recently, maser observations have even been used to determine the magnetic field in megamaser galaxies. This review will present an overview of maser polarization observations and magnetic field determinations of the last several years and discuss the implications of the magnetic field measurements for several important fields of study, such as aspherical PNe creation and massive star formation.

The majority of stars in our galaxy are born in embedded clusters, which can be considered the fundamental units of star formation. We have recently surveyed the star forming content of the Rosette Complex using FLAMINGOS in order to investigate the properties of its embedded clusters. We discuss the results of our near-infrared imaging survey. In particular, we on the first evidence for the early evolution and expansion of the embedded clusters. In addition we present data suggesting a temporal sequence of cluster formation across the cloud and discuss the influence of the HII region on the star forming history of the Rosette.

In a few years astrometry with the venerable combination of Hubble Space Telescope and Fine Guidance Sensor will be replaced by SIM, Gaia, and long-baseline interferometry. Until then we remain a resource of choice for sub-millisecond of arc precision optical astrometry. As examples we discuss 1) the uses which can be made of our parallaxes of Galactic Cepheids, and 2) the determination of perturbation orbital elements for several exoplanet host stars, yielding true companion masses.

QSO absorption lines are sensitive to very low density gas, and consequently, QSO spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for measuring the distribution, physical conditions, and metal enrichment of baryons in the intergalactic medium and in “dark galaxies”. However, ultraviolet spectroscopy is required to study QSO absorbers in the nearby universe where the connections between the absorbing gas and galaxies/environment can be probed. This talk reviewed several recent studies of low-z QSO absorbers in order to demonstrate the value of combining high-resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy with complementary information on the absorber environment, e.g., mapping of 21 cm emission in the vicinity of the absorbers; some notes on these examples are presented in this paper. The absorbers probed range from high-N(H I) damped Lyman α absorbers down to very low-column Lyα forest clouds with log N(H I) < 13.5. The high-N(H I) systems are candidate “dark galaxies” – these systems are more metal enriched than the high-z IGM, possibly due to in-situ star formation, and some of the absorbers are highly metal enriched. However, we have obtained follow-up 21cm emission mapping with the VLA and deep optical imaging, and while we do find H I clouds associated with the absorbers in 21cm emission, we often do not find any evidence of in-situ stars. At this juncture, it seems more likely that these low-z absorbers were enriched with metals within galaxies and were subsequently transported out into the IGM, e.g., by tidal stripping or galactic winds. This contribution also summarizes some recent results on the search for lost baryons in the “warm-hot” (shock-heated) low-redshift IGM.

As a result of failed star formation, brown dwarfs (BDs) do not reach the critical mass to ignite the fusion of hydrogen in their cores. Different from their low-mass stellar brothers, the red dwarfs, BDs cool down with their lifetime to very faint magnitudes. Therefore, it was only about 10 to 20 years ago that such ultracool objects began to be detected. Accurate astrometry can be used to detect them indirectly as companions to stars by the signature of the so-called astrometric wobble. Resolved faint BD companions of nearby stars can be identified by their common proper motion (CPM). A direct astrometric detection of the hidden isolated BDs in the Solar neighborhood is possible with deep high proper motion (HPM) surveys. This technique led to the discovery of the first free-floating BD, Kelu 1, and of the nearest BD, ε Indi B. Both were meanwhile found to be binary BDs. The astrometric orbital monitoring of ε Indi Ba+Bb, for which we know an accurate distance from the Hipparcos measurement of its primary, ε Indi A, will allow the determination of individual masses of two low-mass BDs. Hundreds of BDs have been identified for the last decade. Deep optical sky survey (SDSS) and near-infrared sky surveys (DENIS, 2MASS), played a major role in the search mainly based on colours, since BDs emit most of their light at longer wavelengths. However, alternative deep optical HPM surveys based on archival photographic data are not only sensitive enough to detect some of the nearest representatives, they do also uncover many of the rare class of ultracool halo objects crossing the Solar neighborhood at large velocities. SSSPM 1444, with the extremely large proper motion of 3.5 arcsec/yr, is one of the nearest among these subdwarfs with masses at the substellar boundary. We present preliminary parallax results for this and two other ultracool subdwarfs (USDs) from the Calar Alto Omega 2000 parallax program.

Since 2005, we have been carrying out a precise radial velocity survey of about 190 intermediate-mass (1.5-5 M⊙) G and K giants at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) in Japan, which aims to reveal statistical properties of planetary systems around intermediate-mass stars. We have finished the first screening of 120 stars so far and have identified 5 candidates with large periodic radial velocity variations. One of the candidates turned out to be orbited by a brown dwarf mass companion with minimum mass of 37.6 MJup and semimajor axis of 1.71 AU. The primary star has a mass of 3.9 M⊙, which ranks among the most massive stars with substellar companions. Our discovery may support the current view obtained from results of planet searches around intermediate-mass stars that massive substellar companions tend to form around massive stars.

The IAU Division I Working Group on Nomenclature for Fundamental Astronomy (NFA) was established by the IAU XXV General Assembly with the task of providing proposals for new nomenclature associated with the implementation of the IAU XXIV GA resolutions (2000) and to make related educational efforts for bringing the issue to the notice of scientists in the community.

Observations of the Zeeman effect in OH and H2O masers provide valuable information about magnetic field strength and direction, but only for the very high density gas in which such masers are found. In order to understand the role of magnetic fields in the evolution of the interstellar medium and in the star formation process, it is essential to consider the maser results in the broader context of magnetic fields in lower density gas. This contribution will (very briefly) summarize the state of observational knowledge of magnetic fields in the non-masing gas. Magnetic fields in H I and molecular clouds may be observed via the Zeeman effect, linear polarization of dust emission, and linear polarization of spectral-line emission. Useful parameters that can be inferred from observations are the mass-to-flux ratio and the scaling of field strength with density. The former tells us whether magnetic fields exert sufficient pressure to provide support against gravitational contraction; the latter tells whether or not magnetic fields are sufficiently strong to determine the nature (spherical or disk geometry) of the contraction. Existing observations will be reviewed. Results are that the strength of interstellar magnetic fields remains roughly invariant at 5-10 microgauss between densities of 0.1 cm−3 < n(H) < 1,000 cm−3 but increases proportional to approximately the square root of density at higher densities. Moreover, the mass-to-flux ratio is significantly subcritical (strong magnetic support with respect to gravity) in diffuse H I clouds that are not self-gravitating, but becomes approximately critical in high-density molecular cloud cores. This suggests that MCs and GMCs form primarily by accumulation of matter along magnetic field lines, a process that will increase density but not magnetic field strength. How clumps in GMCs evolve will then depend crucially on the mass-to-flux ratio in each clump. Present data suggest that magnetic fields play a very significant role in the evolution of molecular clouds and in the star formation process.

We investigate the structures of embedded and open clusters using statistical methods, in particular the combined parameter , which permits to quantify the cluster structure. Star clusters build up from several subclusters evolving from a structured to a more centrally concentrated stage. The evolution is not only a function of time, but also of the mass of the objects. Massive stars are usually centrally concentrated, while lower-mass stars are more widespread, reflecting the effect of mass segregation. Using this method we find that in IC 348 and the Orion Nebula Cluster the spatial distribution of brown dwarfs does not follow the central clustering of stars, giving important clues to their formation mechanism by supporting the ejected embryo scenario.

Although supernova explosions and stellar winds happens at scales bellow 100 pc, they affect the interstellar medium (ISM) and galaxy formation. We use cosmological N-body+Hydrodynamics simulations of galaxy formation, as well as simulations of the ISM to study the effect of stellar feedback on galactic scales. Stellar feedback maintains gas with temperatures above a million degrees. This gas fills bubbles, super-bubbles and chimneys. Our model of feedback, in which 10%–30% of the feedback energy is coming from runaway stars, reproduces this hot gas only if the resolution is better than 50 pc. This is 10 times better than the typical resolution in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. Only with this resolution, the effect of stellar feedback in galaxy formation is resolved without any assumption about sub-resolution physics. Stellar feedback can regulate the formation of bulges and can shape the inner parts of the rotation curve.

Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are characterized by semi-periodic episodes of enhanced mass-loss, or outburst. The cause of these outbursts has thus far been a mystery. One explanation is that they are initiated by κ-effect pulsations in the atmosphere caused by a blocking of luminosity at temperatures near the so-called “iron bump” (T ~ 200,000 K), where the Fe opacity suddenly increases and blocks the luminosity. Due to a lag in the onset of convection, the luminosity can build until it exceeds the Eddington limit locally, seeding pulsations and possibly driving some mass from the star. We present preliminary results from a parameter study focusing on the conditions necessary to trigger normal S-Dor type (as opposed to extreme η-Car type) outbursts. We find that as Y increases or Z decreases, the pulsational amplitude decreases and outburst-like behavior, indicated by a large, sudden increase in photospheric velocity, becomes less likely.

Magnetospheric accretion models are the current consensus to explain the main observed characteristics of classical T Tauri stars. In recent years the concept of a static magnetosphere has been challenged by synoptic studies of classical T Tauri stars that show strong evidence for the accretion process to be dynamic on several timescales and governed by changes in the magnetic field configuration. At the same time numerical simulation results predict evolving funnel flows due to the interaction between the stellar magnetosphere and the inner disk region. In this contribution we will focus on the main recent observational evidences for time variable funnel flows and compare them with model predictions.

The chromosphere of the quiet Sun is a highly intermittent and dynamic phenomenon. Three-dimensional radiation (magneto-)hydrodynamic simulations exhibit a mesh-like pattern of hot shock fronts and cool expanding post-shock regions in the sub-canopy part of the inter-network. This domain might be called “fluctosphere”. The pattern is produced by propagating shock waves, which are excited at the top of the convection zone and in the photospheric overshoot layer. New high-resolution observations reveal a ubiquitous small-scale pattern of bright structures and dark regions in-between. Although it qualitatively resembles the picture seen in models, more observations – e.g. with the future ALMA – are needed for thorough comparisons with present and future models. Quantitative comparisons demand for synthetic intensity maps and spectra for the three-dimensional (magneto-)hydrodynamic simulations. The necessary radiative transfer calculations, which have to take into account deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium, are computationally very involved so that no reliable results have been produced so far. Until this task becomes feasible, we have to rely on careful qualitative comparisons of simulations and observations. Here we discuss what effects have to be considered for such a comparison. Nevertheless we are now on the verge of assembling a comprehensive picture of the solar chromosphere in inter-network regions as dynamic interplay of shock waves and structuring and guiding magnetic fields.
